T60 running win xp pro. I downloaded thinkvantage system upgrade and ran it. It froze on "Flash new BIOs". What now?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

flashing a new bios can be risky, if your system isn't stable you can end up destroying your system board. Make sure you have a valid reason for updating the bios, don't do it just because you can, and when you do update it, do it manually not automated. run ONLY the update program with nothing else, not through system update. It would also be wise to disconnect from the net so there is nothing else going on in the background that could cause a crash.
Also make sure you have a constant source of ac power and a fully charged battery.

  • MSI 975X Power Up Edition V2.1 Issue Beside Overclocking After Flash New Bios

    Hi all,
I hope I can get a lot of help here. I'm having a few issues with this board. I cannot find any thread that discuss other issue beside overclocking after you flash a new bios. Here are my problem:
    1.  I installed fresh WindowsXP with SP2. Windows cannot detect new usb device eventhough WindowsXP recognized the usb controller. If I plugin any usb device, windows does not detect a new device. I try to stick a USB flash and I can see the light for a few seconds but Windows cannot detect it. Before I upgrade the bios to version 715 (beta), I used usb flash to upgraded it. Now, the bios is not even boot from usb flash.
    2. Other things that concern me, the southbridge chipset is really really hot. If you touch it long enough, it will burn you.
    3. I cannot figure it out the front audio from manual book (JAUD1). Is any of you know where the mic needs to go?
    Thanks

I removed the Big Typhoon from the MB and I replace with stock fan.  I want to make sure the back plate from Big Typhoon doesn't cause any problem.  When I bootup the windows, I saw WindowsXP recognized the USB device but it disappeared again. I took the MB out from the case and test it without a case. It stills does not recognize the usb. Somebody mention bad PSU(Power Supply Unit) may cause a lot wierd problem. I changed PSU from RaidMax Vocalno 630W to Ultra X-Finity 500W. I don't have a lot of stuff that require power. Do you think the PSU cause this issue?
This is list of my comp:

FYI: USB Controller and USB 2 Controller are enabled in BIOS.

system is rock solid through overnight stress testing at my current speed/timings, so i didnt complain
Yeah, it often happens, that the system runs fine during stress tests, but has problems to boot-up properly when there are memory related problems (initialization problems).
    Quote
do you think my memory is defective in some way?
Not necessarely defective.  The question is what the native speed/timing ratings of the memory chips look like.  Also, DDR3-1066 is actually the max. memory speed that your CPU's memory controller natively supports (according to Intel Specifications).  So it is good to start testing here (does not cost anything and is not risky either).  If the system starts fine @lower memory clock speeds, we will know more.

  • Flashing new BIOS creates CMOS error

    Hi,
    I have Q200 Desktop.
Yesterday, I checked for the new updates from Lenovo. I found out that there is BIOS update 52JY54USA.
I downloaded the flash version and updated. The updation went successfully without errors.
    Trouble started when I rebooted.
During booting my system displayed "CMOS Checksum bad" error. But allowed me to continue to boot into OS.
I tried to update the same BIOS with "Destroy CMOS Checksum" option. There was no improvement.
Eventhough it is not a showstopper I have automated my PC for waking up in midnight and downloading during my Broadband free hours. This will not be possible because I need to press F2 everytime the PC boots and resumes.
By luck I think, I booted into Vista, went to Lenovo website downloaded the CD version of the same BIOS update and burned to a CD. Rebooted and updated the same BIOS update thru CD version.
Now system rebooted and surprise, there is no "CMOS Checksum bad" error.
Now, Is there anyone got this error.
Also is there any reason for this? just a curiosity.
    R Balaji

    Hi R Balaji,
I don't know what caused your first BIOS update error. But in general, I would recommend always using the bootable CD to update the BIOS, as you ended up doing. Trying to update BIOS from inside Windows is AFAIK far more trouble-prone than using the boot CD.
I'm glad to read that you fixed your problem, congrats.
    Best regards,
    Frank

  • Cannnot flash new bios on K9A platinum

i been trying to flash the 1.2 bios over the 1.1 i have on my motherboard using the msi utility in windows but the only thing that happens is that the system just hangs and then i have to reboot. any ideas? thats the only problem thats puzzling me otherwise its an amazing board

Create a bootable CD and do it.
I didn't have to use a RAM Drive.  I used a single floppy (brand new), boot disked it and copied over the flash.
I have tried with a booable cd, but that did'nt work either. Did you flash from the floppy? I have never used that flashtool so I might have done it wrong. I just followed the steps in the word doc that came along with the bios files.

  • What to do with bricked motherboard? MSI P67A-G45 AFTER FLASHING LAST BIOS

I flashed MSI P67A-G45 by the last BIOS for IB CPU. The flashing goes twice with intermediate reset. Before I flashed P67A-C43 by the same version from MSI, and all was Ok.
I flashed new BIOS from version 1I under DOS mode. There was a problem with pen drive and I used hard disk without USB pen drive. That was my error. The exe file started and flashed BIOS  normally and then after reset started flashing Intel ME firmware. I thought all is going ok and the image is taken from HDD. But after the process finished and motherboard reset, it didn't start at all. The fan starts and stops, LED blinks and motherboard behaves the same way even without CPU. What can I do? Is there any way, suppose, using a EEPROM writer? I have one and I can take the BIOS chip off and flash by old version of BIOS. What can You advise? Maybe the second flash process writes another chip - can You tell me about it. Please advise how to manage this problem.
I received no help from support. I'm not a novice - I work in repair center and have soldering station etc. Can You explain me anything about second flashing process? I need only information and I will be able to manage th :lol_anim:is problem.

  • X220 4286-CTO can't update new bios

I get the new X220 today and want to update the new bios because the "unexpected CPU throttling mode" problem.
But when i using system auto update, it can't found any new bios(my bios is 1.12) for my system.
So i manually download the 1.17bios from the lenovo websit.
but when i install it, it also failed to refresh and indicate as follow:
The process does not recognize this system.
    The process has been canceled.
Could anybody tell me what the problem was?
My system is X220 4286-CTO, but i can't find my type on the web selection. And if I use autodetection,it confuse my system as X220i 4286-CTO.
I want to update to new bios. How can i do?
    THX!!

hoang0100, my apologies as I haven't understood you clearly...
May be you try flash BIOS via setup after laptop boots?
The BIOS flashing process is simple - just download the BIOS image and Update Utility (in one pack) from Lenovo's web site. Presently the last version of BIOS is 1.17, direct link on US site for your laptop model is here http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018805.
Download and launch exe file, setup process will start. You'll be promptetd the path where files will be extracted. At the end of installation process you'll be asked to start the flashing process automatically. Close all applications, plug-in AC adapter and start. You'll see the process. Don't do anything on laptop during that process, about one minute. At the end your laptop will be rebooted. That's end. Also you'll get backup copy of your current BIOS, that file has name bios.bak.
Note you can flash new BIOS or re-flash manually by launching winflash.exe.
    Cheers

  • New bios 845E Max2 is out

Just notice from the msi web site that the new bios version 5.4 is now out for 845E Max2 mobo.

    Hi ArbalestPang,
You can email MSI tech support as often as you want but I do think they are either too busy to response or just ignore any support request emails. I have tried couple times to email them some of my minor problems related to this mobo I have and so far I got no response from them.
By the way, the new Bios still have not fix the problem for system hungs during warm boot if you oc the FSB from 100 to 133.

Do you have any experiences with version 2.29?
PS. I tested RAM modules with MemTest and whole system with some tool included in  Lenovo Toolbox. Everything was OK.

Recently actually (even after replacing systemboard) I experience problem described here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-69684

  • New to MSI. Will new bios cool GX740 by at least 10 degrees See notes

Hi Guys, Love the GX740. I have bios (E) and was wondering if (F) (latest)  Would cool the laptop by more than 8-10 degrees.
Laptop idles around 58c  Games around 78c. Vbios is updated by seller. Is this Temp. normal
If new bios will not adjust temp a lot prefer not to flash
    Thanks, Bckh4 :azn:

    ^ haha ^
    Correction, temps listed are ANNOYING.
You can flash the vBIOS but thats not a great idea if you haven't done it before.
Easiest is to create custom downclocking & undervolting profiles with ATi CCC.
It is the same for the gx640. Google it for a guide.

hoping a bios update would maybe improve speed
Well, usually a different BIOS has no big impact on system performance.
Anyway, if you ever decide to switch to a v8.x BIOS, there are basically two options:
    1) Fool the M-Flash File Scan by simply renaming the desired v8.x BIOS File to A7522IMS.7x0 (x=any number you like).
    - or -
    2) >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
In any case, I'd suggest to use option #2, however, if it is not really necessary to update the BIOS, you may as well leave it alone.
