Flashlight app possible malware?

According to the attached video the top ten flashlight apps are malware.  Does anyone know if the iphone flashlight is secure?

The one that comes with iPhone seems OK. The ones we download are the problem. One expert says if the app takes up more than a megabyte it's probably malware. This makes sense since turning on a flashlight is such a simple operation - not worthy of megs of memory. You can check the amount of memory used by going to Settings - General - Usage - Manage Storage. The expert says if you have a large (> 1Meg) flashlight go to your provider or an apple store to get reset to factory setting. Deleting the app is  not enough.
The "expert" specifically says "apps you download from the Google play store". You cannot download iPhone apps from the Google Play Store. Unlike Android phones, apps on your iPhone cannot access any of your data without asking your permission, so if a flashlight app asks to see your contacts, location, or any other information then I would delete the app and report it to Apple.
It's well known that Android phones are highly susceptible to malware. One of the security companies a few months ago identified 297 apps that were malware. All but 3 were for Android devices. The 3 that could infect an iPhone all had been removed from the App store and deleted from phones within days of their release.

There is no malware that can affect an iPhone unless it's been jailbroken.
Some apps request to do things, like access your location or contacts, and can continue to do so in the background. If this app requested permission for either of these things, you should delete it. A flashlight app has no need for such information.

  • Malware in flashlight apps for Android - has anyone confirmed the information

There's a YouTube video warning about malware hidden in popular flashlight apps for Android - has anyone confirmed or debunked this ??  http://www.youtube.com/embed/Q8xz8xKEFvU

I should have been a bit more specific on which 7.7's I am referring to.
Specifically, has anyone with the Verizon branded SCH i815 model received the update?  Or has anyone bought or received a refurb tablet from Verizon that had the ICS operating system already running?
It is clear that the other wi fi 7.7's that Samsung sells can be and have been updated by Samsung, but my conversation with Samsung indicated to me that they cannot or will not update the SCH i815 because it is a Verizon specific model.
What I am looking for here is info on the SCH i815 as to whether ANY of them are running ICS and how/where did that occur.
    Thanks,
    Harry

The creeps that generate this code figured that the iPhone since is is selling so well would be a great market for them even if iOS makes it impossible for their code to do anything practical unless it is jail broken first.

  • Deleted a Flashlight App and now I cannot send texts nor get the iOS 8.1 update.  Was the App a malware?

Since deleting the Flashlight App early this morning and all of my mail has stopped coming in since 1:40 am.
When I connect it to my computer to back up my phone, it just asks if I trust this computer but does not show up in My Computer.
    Any suggestions?

Removed and replaced Sim per Troubleshooting instructions. Problem fixed.

  • Safety of flashlight apps

I received a video from a friend concerning the safety (malware) and leaks (gleaning and sharing of personal data) from flashlight apps (such as maglite). Is this accurate information? And, is the app that came with my iPhone safe?

I think I can assure you over question 1.    Apps in the App store come under two categories, Apple apps and 3rd party apps.
Apple apps will always be identifiable by the call to read and accept the terms and conditions.   They will be safe.
3rd party apps are from independant developers who have promoted their products to Apple and (can't say for sure on their behalf) been tested.   If a problem occurs Apple will refer you back to them.   My feeling is, it is unlikely they will be unsafe.

I am trying to download a movie from itunes, but ithere's isn't enough room to download. I have a iphone4, have deleted every app possible. Slimmed down photos to hardly anything. I could never update to ios7 because of storage problems. Only 2.5 GB available out of 5GB after deleting everything. I'm also out of town and cannot connect to a computer. I have wifi access though. Help?

    Update
OK, Today I went ahead & booted & tried again & it worked this time.
Not sure why it didn't yesterday. Maybe the servers were just overloaded? Several others reported similar.
Also yesterday when I ran Speedtest it showd download at about 25 mbps, This morning just before I re-started the download it was showing just above 30 mbps.  So maybe the internet was less busy? Or at least the parts between me & the test server.
& so far it is working ok.

  • VSP is saying the gallery app is malware.

VSP is saying the gallery app is malware.
This app came with the phone, why is it now considered malware 9 months later?

One of the reasons I do NOT use VSP on my phones is that they call everything Malware including the Photo Gallery and on some phones My Verizon Mobile (which I agree with it is malware).  I disable it (uninstall if you can but it is probably locked) and I use Lookout Mobile Security which is Free and very highly rated.

  • IOS 7 flashlight app

I accidently deleted the Flashlight app from my phone thinking it was one of the older third party ones I had. Is there anyway to restore just that app?

That's what I would have assumed.  Unfortunately, not the case.  This is what happened to cause the issue :  I went into settings > general.  In the "STORAGE" section you will see "flashlight" at the bottom of the list (near other standard apps like Passbook, Voice Memos, Sounds).    When I clicked on "Flashlight" it had the options to Delete app.  I clicked on it thinking it was a 3rd party app.  Sadly, once that was done, when I go panel, the flashlight icon is there but lighter than the clock, calc, and camera; and when I click on it it does not respond.  The other three - icons slill in dark charchoal - do work.  How do you explain that?   I would love a fix, but the flashlight option is now missing entirely from the storage section.  I will go to the genius bar if I have to, but I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
(What's really annoying is that the other aforementioned IOS standard apps do not have a delete option.  Not sure why they allowed it with this one option.)

  • Does the flashlight app harm i-phone's LED light?

Does the flashlight app potentially do harm to the phone's LED light?

I assume you're asking about iHandy Flashlight, or something like it:
    http://www.ihandysoft.com/flashlight.html
All LEDs become less bright as they age, that's just a fact of life. The effect may be so subtle as to not be noticeable though, and I have never experienced a visible light LED actually fail completely.
The fact that the app is in the App Store is sufficient for me to conclude that it will not be harmful.
I imagine your iPhone will be outdated in the four or five years you might be expected to use the app. I wouldn't be concerned about it.

  • Suspicious metadata suggests possible malware...

I have this really weird problem that just came up, and I don't know what to think except "malware?".
I run an old program called Business Sense using Classic. I have several copies of the application on my machine, and I recently noticed some strange behavior: if I open a Business Sense file (not the application directly), it opens the program (no problems). But if I try to open the application itself, the computer instead tries to open it as a file in Script Editor. Get Info reveals that the kind is listed as "application" instead of "Application (Classic)". The "Open With" panel shows up, and the Memory panel does not. Two copies of the program have this problem, and the other 5 or so do not. Other Classic apps do not have this problem as far as I can see. Sometimes the Business Sense icon changes to a weird "color glitch" square (sort of like TV noise but with color). If I use SetFileInfo (from the developer tools) to turn off the custom icon flag, the weird icon goes away.
Here's the really weird part. I used an Automator workflow that I cobbled together from macosxhints.com to view all of the metadata for the file (it uses the mdls command in the command line). The funky copies of Business Sense show this metadata:
    */Documents/BS Data/B $‚Ñ¢ 2.3 -------------*
    *kMDItemAttributeChangeDate = 2007-11-25 19:33:02 -0800*

    *kMDItemUsedDates = (2004-12-11 16:34:45 -0800)*
Don't mind the funky file name (it's named "B $™ 2.3" in the Finder). The weird part is what are in the ContentType and ContentTypeTree fields. For comparison, here's the metadata from one of the normal Business Sense applications:

Whereas the normal one has metadata values one would expect ("com.apple.application-file", "com.apple.application", "public.executable", etc.), the funky one has a value that doesn't make any sense: "com.prospa.manpage"
Where the heck did that come from? I tried going to that website (prospa.com) and it's just a placeholder for a domain squatter. Interestingly, manpage.prospa.com does exist, and redirects to prospa.com. On that website, a contact address is listed: [email protected], but the words "contact us" to the right of that send the user to http://paty-poker.net/ which looks almost exactly the same as the first site.
A whois inquiry of prospa.com is shown below. It reveals that the owner is in South Korea, and lists a different contact email address ([email protected])

I don't know Korean. I don't go to Korean websites. Where in the heck did my computer get the information to put "com.prospa.manpage" into the metadata of a random Classic application on my computer? I can't think of any reason that makes any sense other than malware. I looked up "com.prospa.manpage" and "prospa.com" on Google, Yahoo, and Altavista; nothing comes up for the first one, and nothing that seems relevant comes up for the second one. I also tried searching for "prospa.com", "com.prospa" and "prospa" in Spotlight - not a single result listed. Not even the funky Business Sense application.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I hate bringing up the idea of "malware", but that's the only thing that makes any sense to me. What else would it be?
So far, the only thing I could think of to do was to email the [email protected] address using a junk email account saying that I was "interested" in the prospa.com website. I just did that this evening, so I don't expect to hear anything back for a while - although I don't know what good it's going to do. Does anyone know how to report this to Apple directly?
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!

I figured it out. I feel sort of silly.
At one point, my son's PowerBook hard drive was connected to the computer. He had a spotlight importer called manimporter.mdimporter installed. Somehow, the file associations for that mdimporter got added to my lsregister database, so any file that ended in .[number] (such as B $™ 2.3) was seen as a man file. I re-indexed the lsregister database using the command found at the bottom of this macosxhints.com hint:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071014124330643
and that fixed the problem (perhaps this information will help someone with a similar problem in the future, like it did for me). I had to modify the search slightly, as just updating the database didn't get rid of the entry for manimporter.mdimporter. Using the following two variants seems to have returned everything to normal:
./lsregister -kill -f -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network -dump
+This one kills the current database and forces a new update of all possible domains. I also added a+ *> ~/file.txt* +to the end so that the dump command would load all the data into a text file that I could look at later.+
    ./lsregister -f -R /system/library/
+This one picks up things like .dmg and .zip. I don't know why those weren't indexed in the first command. This one gives a lot of errors as it encounters things like jpeg files, but it seems to be ok.+
I don't recall whether I had to run these commands as root or not. Anyway, I hope this helps somebody.
