Flat file in application.

hi sapgurus,
Can any body teach how to put the flat file in application server.
I know the tcode AL11 to view the flat files,but i want to insert the flat file.

Hi Stalin,
You need to have access to your various unix directories. You must have user ids and passwd (FTP accounts) to access these directories. Check with your basis team for the required access.
There are various softwares used to upload the file into the application serevr. Filezella etc. is one of them. Check with your team what software they are using to upload the files into the application serevr.

Physical file is what you see from the OS level.
Logical file is what ABAP code can call certain functions to read/write.
Transaction FILE would link them together. Typically the logical path ends with "<FILENAME>", and the logical file refers to the logical path. You can check the help for more info.

Hi Sairam,
I hope you know which location you have saved in the Application server.
Now if you go to the Infopackage and click on the "External Data" tab, there you will see Radio Buttons for
1) Client Workstation
2) Application Server
Choose the second radio button, then in the Field "Name of the File" you will be able to use the F4 help and browse AL11 transaction through this option. You can then choose the File.

I guess your in ternal table is not able to hold the data as is of 200 characters ... try increasing the length ..

Hi,
1) goto SXDA_TOOLS Transaction code
2) Provide the Following details
Object Type : DXPROJECT
Program Type: BAPI
Program/Method: CREATE
3) Click on Copy Button
4) Select the Source as Presentation Server
     a) Select the File where you saved in your Local machine
5) Select the Target as Application server
     a) Check the check box Remote Server
     b) Select the File type as Physical
     c) In File name give /usr/sap/SSD/DVEBMGS00/work\Your file name (This the Server path
Where the file is going to save)
6) Click on Continue
Go to AL11 and check whether the File has been create in the following path /usr/sap/SSD/DVEBMGS00/work
Provide this path in the Communication channel path when you select the Transport Protocol as NFS and you place the file in AL11 directory.

Problem Reading Flat File from Application server

I want to upload a Flat File which is having a Line Length of 3000.
While uploading it to Application server , only upto 555 length it is getting uploaded .
i am using the code :

What could be the problem?
Could it be due to any Configuration Problem?

Your code looks OK, but you may have touble displaying the full width. Try:
WRITE: /001 TB_FILENAM-DATA+555.
(And don't forget to append your ITAB after each read.)

How to edit flat file in application server

Hi all,
I have requirment of flat file load. User will update flat file and I need to upload data in cube. I am done with loading data from application server flat file to cube Now I want to know where this file will be stored so user can update the data .
Do i need to store it some where in application sever only ? I checked my current file data but it's not in editable form.
Please let me know your expert suggestion.

Neither user or you can not upload or edit the CSV files directly from the AL11(Application level directories).
Using this Functional Module: ARCHIVFILE_CLIENT_TO_SERVER you can upload the file from your machine to AL11
Note: you must have an authorization to execute this FM in PRD! otherwise you can follow the below procedure.
(Or)
As you data flow is from a flat file, you can ask your basis team to run a FTP program, so that when ever user give a new file every day, using the FTP program the latest file will upload into the AL11 directories. you can execute data using the Info package as usual from AL11.

Field Values being changed in the flat file on Application Server

Hi All,
I am loading a flat file(.CSV) from Application server. The file has some characteristic fields, for ex: CNUM of type Char, length 20. But it has got the value which is of 10 char length, say XYZ1234XAB. When I load the same fiel from client workstation, the load was successful but when I load it from Application server, the load has failed and the error is Invalid/Hex. characteristics for this record and many such records.
When I checked the file on the application server the value 'XYZ1234XAB' is being displayed as 'XYZ1234XAB   #' and it is also being loaded with '#'. This is the cause of the error.
Why is the value being changed on the application server? What can I do to overcome this?

Hi Ganesh,
I have already loaded data to my ODS and when activating it is giving error "Value 'XYZ123XABC   #' (hex. '123456....') of characteristic CNUM contains invalid chara".
I also have some lower case char in some of the records for the same field. The file is huge and cannot change the file, infact I have many such files. Is there any other way to overcome this?

I am trying to load a flatfile from the application server, and I am getting the message
Error while accessing the application server file
Message no. RSDS_ACCESS002
I checked for notes and found only one:
Note 1033978 - Correction: Loading Unicode files from application server
but we have 19 SP level, and the note says it needs 13 SP level, so I think it would not be of any help.
does anybodie know what to do??

Hi,
well normally you use the method GUI_UPLOAD of class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES to upload a file from your client pc. Then you use the abap statements open dataset, transfer and close dataset to put the file to the app-server.

CAN NOT TRANPORT INFOSPOKE FLAT FILE DESTINATION PATH

I am writing from infospoke to a flat file in application server. When I transported this to QA, Application server Check box is unchecked and path is changed to path in QA.
Do I need to have Logical File name in order to transport. If I have 5 infospokes do I need to have 5 logical file names or is there any way to pass a parameter ... .
Is there any other way to transport with out having File Name option instead of Logical File name?

Hi Krishna,
You would need an ABAP program to change the entry in the table RSBFILE.
First try this. Goto se11 -> RSBFILE -> give your Infohub name and check if you have authorization to change the path.
ELSE..
Write an ABAP program and update the field.
REPORT test.
tables: RSBFILE.
update RSBFILE set PATH = '<your path>' where OHDEST = <your Infobub>.

Try declaring it as TYPE STRING. Not sure though.
There are two predefined types in ABAP with variable length:
STRING for character strings
XSTRING for byte strings

How to update Material master data by using idoc type MATMAS05 . The data is present in flat file at application server.
I am new to idoc area.Please provide me the sample program that how to update material master data by using standard idoc type.
I am clear with the point that we have to read flat file from application server to internal table.
But i got stucked at this point that how to update data from internal table data , by using standard idoc type MATMAS 05.
I am in real need.Please provide me with the answer of this query.

by a middleware . The SAP interface program reads the file from the application server and then starts processing the data. Please help me how to create the inbound IDoc and which FM needs to be used.

In simple words, Main advantage with idoc over flat file is security....
I will explain you some scenario here U got a flat file with all the data...Now u r having the flat file if you want u can modify the data in it, or somehow any one can modify the data in it if they were able to access this file. That means u maintained the file in the presentation server
One level of higher security to the above level is maintaining the flat file in application server, at point also even though lot of people r not having the access to that file, super user who is having the access may modify the data or delete the data from it rite....
so in both of those levels u don't have 100% security...
So there come to the picture of idocs, Idocs simply data carriers, those r generated by a program but not manually...data will be divided into number of segments based upon ur program. So manually its not so easy to modify the data in these idocs. If any changes to be made in the data then u have to modify the data in the application and then u have to update the idoc or you have to generate the new idoc with that corresponding data. so in this case not even super user can manipulate the data directly in the idoc....
I think u got my point what I mean to say.....
