Can someone help explain the difference between Flattneing a PDF in Acrobat (Flatten Preview tool) verus opening a PDF file in Photoshop and re-saving as a PDF?

Opening a PDF file in Photoshop, the entire page is converted into a bitmap image. All the separate objects (graphics, text, etc.) are lost, so saving back to PDF from Photoshop is rather useless - you'd get the same result saving as a JPEG.
Flattening in Acrobat converts come types of content into others. There are two meanings for the term 'flatten' in Acrobat:
Flattening transparency (which is what the flattener preview does) - this merges page objects that have transparency so they are more reliable when printed to older technologies, and it can also change 'live' text into outline graphics, etc.
Flattening comments and form fields - here the only change is to set the comments/form fields to be part of the page instead of dynamic objects that appear on top. It prevents them from being changed using the form or comment tools but leaves them in their original format, so a text field is still rendered as live text, not a graphic shape or bitmap.

"Flatten" option for multi-camera is gone in new version of CC

It has been a couple months since I have used this feature, but it is gone now. Now when I right click on a multi-camera clip, the only option is "Enable" (or disable by uncheking it). The option to "Flatten"was a huge benefit, and it was sorely lacking in CS6. Please tell me that this feature is coming back, or more importantly how to get it back. I am working on a whole bunch of multicamera projects this month.

The flatten command remains for me on 7.2 running OSX 10.8.5, for multicam sequences created through the Project panel and by the old method of nesting a sequence in another sequence.
As evidence that this is CC7.2, note that two instances of the Media Browser are open, which was not possible until the new update.
I'm not suggesting that the command is missing in your case but only certifying that it has not been removed altogether. The more info you can provide about your case, the better the chance that we'll be able to figure out what's going on.

I have a requirement as below :
Structure Table. EO1
Attirubtes Table. EO2
The relation ship between two tables is one to one.
My requirement is i need to show the data in Flattened Format in a table region.
For display purpose i was able to display data.
For performing DML operations : Like : Insert, Update , Delete. I have take a VO1 based on two EO's : EO1 and EO2' , AO for EO1 && EO2. and written query in Expert Mode.
Here i struck, i could not understand how to proceed further. While performing update : only data in : EO1 is getting updated. EO2 data is getting committed.
One more issue is : i could not understand how to perform insertRow() for above ?
Please provide your suggestions.

I'dd like to export an Indesign-file (.indd) to a PDF-file that has to be:
- the smallest possible file size
- which displays images and text sharp on the screen
- which also certainly remain transparent parts of .psd-files after exporting
- that is flattened for easy print
The problem?
▪ How and with which of settings can I export such a file from InDesign 5.0?
▪ If necessary in combination with some settings (after exporting) in our Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
Further explanation
The export file contains lots of text, graphics, photographs and drawings. Many of these items are .psd-files that contain transparent areas. The intention is that this transparent parts actually remain transparent even after exporting/flattening /decreasing the PDF.

Ideas on how to best flatten a structure

I need to take the data in a table and flatten it. e.g.
The data is stored like this:
Id Description
1 Cat
2 Dog
3 Bird
4 Tree
I have to make a table with the "Description" elements as columns. i.e. the final table would have the following columns:
Cat Dog Bird Tree ...
The number of columns is not fixed, it will be based on how many rows are in the original table.
I can think of a few pretty rough ways of doing it. i.e. Using Unix Shell/SQL to generate a create table script i.e.
CREATE TABLE descriptions
( cat VARCHAR2(100),
bird VARCHAR2(100)
etc);
Is there any way I can do this in straight PLSQL? can I write dynamic DDL (I assume I can?). Or is there an even more powerful/elegant way of flattening a table in the manner in Oracle 9i??

Tom Kytes has some examples of pivot queries to do this sort of thing, but I don't believe he's extended them to handle an arbitrary number of columns. You should be able to turn Tom's statis SQL queries into dynamic SQL queries, though, which would get you to your arbitrary columns requirement.

Flattening Essbase Measures in OBIEE 11g

Hi all,
I'm using OBIEE 11g. After importing a cube from Essbase to the physical layer in the RPD, I'm choosing "Convert measure dimension to flat measures" to flatten the measures. Now I have all the measures as a flat list. However, the "Measures" dimension/hierarchy still exists in the physical layer. I find this strange.
Then when I drag the cube to the business model layer, that "Measures" dimension/hierarchy isn't brought to the business model layer. I think this is correct, because the measures are already flattened, therefore there should not be any measure dimension/hierarchy in the business model layer.
My questions:
1. If the measure dimension/hierarchy is not used anymore in the business model layer, why does it still exist in the physical layer?
2. What is the impact if I remove it from the physical layer? (Note: I tried this, so far no error, but not sure if later on I will encounter error because of this)

(Note: I tried this, so far no error, but not sure if later on I will encounter error because of this)There shudn't be any future problem incase you wanna delete it during developemet BUT think of a situation during Incremental Essbase Cube Import to OBIEE which was not possible in 10g (straight Forwardly).
I'd suggest to keep it as it is in Physical Layer inorder to avaoid any future issues/enhanced requirements.

Really bad banding and artifacts in 16-bit layered greyscale file. Bad banding is retained when converted to 8-bit with No flattening. Flatten 16-bit image and banding and artifacts disappear even with no dither or noise layer. Is this a known bug?

Has anyone else experienced this?
I thought it was a monitor problem at first, but I'm using a 10-bit per channel Eizo. It seems to be a Photoshop bug based on many layers interacting with each other. When I flatten everything is fine. But I need to work on this image with layers and decent fidelity. Interestingly when I convert to 8-bit without flattening (and utilising the dither function to potentially reduce banding even further), it uses the terrible artifact laden/banding to do the conversion even though when I zoom into 1:1 in my 16-bit document it looks fine. But 50% or 25% zoom I suddenly get these awful artifacts.
Here's some screenshots to clarify. Please note I've used Photoshop for 24 years so I'm no slouch but this is the first time I've seen this. The problem is I need to do some subtle airbrush and texture work on this and it's almost unusable unless I flatten (please note, it does the same in the original 8-bit file and just to say I Gaussian-Blurred every layer with a 30px radius after converting to 16-bit so the there's no longer any 8-bit information in there or reasons for banding/artifacts). I can only think it is some of bug in Photoshop's layering engine.
Has anyone seen this before - dealt with this before?

I can't speak to why, perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can speak to that. But if it only happens at certain views then it's purely a display issue; it won't happen in print or when you downsample to display size. Such banding issues have always disappeared for me when I output to 8 bit.
I'd assume that it's because of your monitor; it can't display all the colors and when zoomed out there's too wide of a range in a small area so banding occurs. But that's just my guess.

Save dynamic PDF as flattened or read only

I finished filling a form, which is a dynamic PDF. Now that I'm done filling it out, I want to save it as a regular PDF, where the fields cannot be edited, and anyone can open it without needing a special version of adobe (basically just a regular PDF viewer), since it's easier to email, and anyone can open it without a problem. Can this be done?
I have a MacBook Pro, with Yosemite OS.

Do you understand what "flattening" a PDF does?
It converts fields and annotations content into the context of the PDF and removes the form fields and annotations and they cannot be recovered to their original objects.
I would look at making the fields read only and using a digital signature to disclose if the PDF has been changed after the signature has been applied.

Flattening a PDF that contains an XML file

Hi I am hoping someone can help me.
We have a PDF document that contains an XML form. We are starting to utilize DocuSign software to electronically sign and route our forms. The problem is that this form cannot be converted in the DocuSign portal. We need a way to flatten the software once it has been completed and all information has been input into the form and sent to us by a faculty member. I have downloaded a couple of different JavaScript add ons and have tried them. One doesn't seem to do anything the other one UVSAR_selectiveFlatten.js attempts to flatten the form but then quits and pops up the message "Security settings or digital signatures in this file prevent flattening."
When I look at the security settings under properties for the form it says "No Security" in the drop down box and there are no signatures in the form. I am attempting all of this on a blank form.
Flattening or printing to PDF works ok on a PC but we have a few Mac users and that is where our problems are coming in. The only option to print to PDF is the little drop down box in the bottom left corner of the print dialog box that says save as PDF. When we try this it pops up the message, "Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save." File>Save just saves a copy with all of the XML code, etc.
The only other option we have found is to save the file as an image but this then breaks the file into 3 pages. We also don't want to print the form and then have to rescan it back in.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what we could do to flatten the image so that it could be easily uploaded to DocuSign.

Ok, this is an XML/XFA/Designer form.
You cannot use JavaScript designed for Acrobat forms (Acroforms). I suspect that is the problem. You must develop JavaScript using the Designer JavaScript object model. Not sure if that even supports flattening, since it isn't really a PDF at all with all that XML stuff.

Data type of preprend array size in Flatten To String block

The data type of the preprend array size in Flatten To String block is given as I32. Is it somehow possible to reduce the data type to I8, since the width and height of my array won't exceed 255 ?. I also need to do the same in Unflatten To String as well.

The short answer is no. This is because the index is an I32. NI likes to keep integers as an I32 whenever possible for reasons like this.
Since you are dealing with a 2D array (width and height), it will actually use 2 I32s before the actual data.
As Ravens stated, you could put in your own array sizes before the array in the string. But it is worth saving 6 bytes? Not likely.

Illustrator CC 2014: Save As PDF, Flatten Transparency Issues

Hi All,
We created a PDF presentation that's about 40 pages in Illustrator and had some display issues with previews in Box. Upon inspecting the bug, we realized that Box's preview function does not display transparency properly (or at least seems to have issue displaying transparency if it hasn't been flattened.) We tried flattening the transparency of our Illustrator file, but when we do this the PDF has faint box outlines around objects.
Can anyone recommend a solution to this issue?

P.S. I'm new to figuring out which PDF Presets to use to optimize my presentation for desktop/iphone/ipad presentation. Right now we are using Press Quality with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities unchecked and Optimized for Fast Web View.
P.P.S. We tried Acrobat 5-8 Compatibility for Box, non worked. Acrobat 4 with flattened transparency displayed properly, but had the problematic outlines.

Anyone have any input?

In Adobe Acrobat XI Pro Version 11.0.0 - Flatten file so it is not editable even by Acrobat

In Adobe Acrobat XI Pro Version 11.0.0 I use the Flatten option under Preflight but when I go back into the document using Acrobat and use Edit Text & Images, I am able to edit and delete items in the document. I also tried Flatten Preview -> Apply but this didn't work either. I finally tried to print the document as a pdf but the same thing happens. If a document is flattened, it should not be editable by any software but it seems that if someone has Acrobat, they will be able to edit the pdf I send them. Can you please tell me how I can truly flatten a pdf file so that it is not editable by at all?

Should I open sent PDF's through PS (flatten then save as .eps) & then save as a PDF thru distiller

Hi, I'm coming from a print background with newspapers where it was necessary to do the above with sent PDF's for print so that the fonts wouldn't bomb at print. I'm now working with a high gloss magazine and am wondering if it is necessary to do the same now. I have been doing it as routine with sent PDF's for print, once I ge the email I open in PS, make sure they are CMYK then flatten the image and save as .eps to open in Distiller and save as a PDF again. Again this was to make sure no fonts would bomb at print as per I was tought. (Used Quark when working with newspaper and thankfully am using InDesign for magazine). Is there any negative to doing this still? Even if the sent PDF's are fine (all True type font)? Could doing this, flatten and resave cause the iamges or fonts on the PDF's to lose quality at print? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't but I could be wrong with this higher quality print.
Appreciate any advice here, as I'm slightly worried it may cause some loss of quality at print (fuzzy border around text - light but there). Thanks.
Programs used are PS CS5, InDesign 5, Adobe Distiller 9. Final proofs are PDF's from InDesign to printer.

The “workflow” you cite is absolutely not recommended for any purpose whatsoever. The only thing that can be said for it is that it produces consistently low quality results with extra steps and overhead. Forget about transparency and color management! The newspapers in question must have been either (1) working with antiquated, buggy RIP software from the previous millennia or (2) had personnel with mindsets and education from the previous millennia!
Adobe strongly recommends use of direct PDF export from InDesign using the PDF/X-4 preset – never create PDF by distillation of PostScript!
Although we strongly encourage use of OpenType fonts for their typographical features and cross-platform compatibility, in terms of output quality and reliability, use of Type 1 versus TrueType versus OpenType is irrelevant.

Instructions on how to create a "flattened" pdf from a LiveCycle Form

My company is working with a vendor who had requested that I "flatten" my LiveCycle created pdf so as to remove the XML data and interactivity from the form so it no longer has fill in fields. After much research I found a very simple solution and wanted to post it here because the discussions that I waded thru on this forum to find out how to do this process were varied and lengthy. But in reality, the solution is quite simple.
I opened my regular LiveCycle file in LiveCycle and chose "print" from the File menu. In the Printer Name drop down, I chose "Adobe PDF", clicked OK and then saved the form with another name. Now the form is not fillable, is compatible with older systems, and no longer has any "fill in fields" even when opened back up in LiveCycle as a "flowed" document. The text is editable but in small snippets instead of as paragraphs.
I thought I'd share this because you never know who might be looking for just this same solution. The funny thing is, I wish I had known of this earlier. The United States postal service is using Adobe Reader version 5 and couldn't open any of my pdfs. This might have helped us to be able to view the documents on their system. And I thought MY company was behind the times! Who knew?
