Flex 2.01 Contract in Lawndale, CA ...

Flex 2.01 Contract in Lawndale, CA 90260, on-site, no
telecommuting, good rate.
I'm looking for a smart individual who can hit the ground
running on a Flex 2.01 application immediately.
My company is working on a contract in Lawndale, CA. If you
don't know where that is ... Google "90260, CA"
I'm not sure how long the contract will be, but a minimum of
three to six months, full-time, sounds about right.
I'm looking for someone to design and build reports and
charts connected to a vertical application designed in Flex 2.01
and backed by a Microsoft SQL 2005 database.
There may be additional requirements for XML feeds and web
services to be provided to an Internet audience. You will have to
sign a very comprehensive NDA to work on this project.
There are intellectual property rights issues which require
the chosen candidate to work on-site, no telecommuting.
Experience is a plus, but any sufficiently skilled Java
programmer who is willing to learn action script should be able to
fill the bill.
We are going to need other expertise’s in the future
… database tuning … uptime or availability consulting
… we’re using JBoss as the app server … , but for
right now … I just need a coder with awesome customer service
skills.
There isn't a lot of fancy code, very little Flex Data
Services (FDS).
We have simply encapsulated access to the database for ACID
and very simply manage multi-user issues and are cranking on a
client/server database application that happens to use a web
browser as a deployment medium.
Customizability(?) and Reliability were the two main criteria
when we started.
Please send pertinent parts of your resume and hourly rate
requirement to me and we will talk.
We will probably be upgrading to JBoss 5.0 and Flex 3.0 as
those those releases mature.

  • Using mxmlc to compile AS files

    Hi there,
    I'm wondering if there's a way to compile all classes into 1 swf file? As it is, I have a command that does "mxml -includes classA classB -output classC.swf classC"
    and although I have classC.swf, when I load it on my webpage, it makes two extra requests for classA and classB. Is there anyway for me to combine all the classes into classC.swf?
    Thanks!

    What if you have an MXML file where you "include" A, B and C?

  • Flex PHP Wizard Issues (Is Flex/PHP ready for prime time)

    I have been designing a website using Flex. I thought of using Flex form many reasons, but one was to reduce the number of languages used in the development process. I am going to be hosting at Godaddy so I thought  I would try PHP. I normally would use Java, but Flex seems to want Enterprise Beans and Java Remote Objects which cost to much and would probably not work on Godaddy. I started out with MAMP on a Apple computer and have design 60% of my application, when I started noticing as the database go larger, I started getting communication errors with the MAMP version of mysql. So I installed MySQL and and started using Apache and PHP that comes with OSX. The communication errors are increased.
    Any suggestions? I am at the point, if I can find a proven programmer, with GoDaddy/Flex/MySQL/PHP and Java experience to help answer some question, I think I can come up with contract dollars.
    First question is Flex ready? or is this an issue with PHP?

  • Flex 4/Spark UI Design

    How exactly do "most" Flex developers do this nowadays?  I'm coming from Flex 3 with a lot of experience in Flex Builder 3, where "Design View" and doing basic visual customizations were a no-brainer.  Does anyone even use Design View anymore?  (Please don't tell me we're all hitting "run" to see what the UI looks like.)  Do I need to buy Catalyst or Fireworks or something to make the Spark skinning process manageable?  I'm having a terrible time getting design view to show anything remotely close to what I'd consider an accurate preview.
    Basically it seems like porting a real (not a silly "example" demo component on some blog) Flex 2 or 3 app to 4 + Spark is practically impossible without basically starting from scratch on the UI.
    Also, Spark has been out for a while now.  I find it odd that I have a hard time finding even a single 'free' or example Spark skin (other than the ones included in FB which nobody can read the fonts on)--are there any free or example Spark skins out there at all?

    Well the IDE used to be a little more solid when we had FB3 (i.e. no Spark components and an almost perfectly working Design View mode).  On the upside we have proper refactoring now.  I'm hoping FB 5 will be a clean up of some of the back peddling done in 4 in terms of stability and developer productivity.
    I don't know if I'd say Adobe doesn't care, I think they're a much smaller company and they aren't making much income off the technology yet so it's hard to justify big expenses.
    IMO they should just open source Livecycle (maybe Flex Builder too), and start selling support contracts to big companies.  To do this they'd have to stop messing around with this flashy-UI and useless "effects/transitions", and start building a more robust business world oriented platform.  The OSS business model seems to be working for Red Hat (not to mention Oracle) and I suspect Google has it in long term planning with all the OSS stuff they do.  You lose the revenue of product sales, but you also get free developer support from the OSS community, and overall it's a good deal for everyone.
    Another cool and possibly wildly successful possibility would be to officially support a Java syntax Flash compiler (like J2AS, although no idea how mature that is) within FB.  There's 1 million+ potential developers added to your dev base right there.  Some Java guys are pissy about learning another language and just complain that ActionScript is different, so they go for RIA-imitation tools like GWT just so they can stay in Java.
    Silverlight has come far, but there's still a few things Flex has over SL - Flash platform installs for example (and of course Java devs lean towards Flex over SL big time).  Contrast to the fragmented HTML5 world - the complete standard isn't even estimated to be completed until well after 2020 (never mind getting everything working correctly in all these new browsers and hand held devices) - talk about low ambitions!
    Honestly, I'd be plenty happy (for now) if I could just make some decent progress with this freaking design mode issue and start being productive again.

  • Can you use a flex application as part of a whole web page?

    Hello all,
    Have a quick question. I am coming over from a flash developing background, and I commonly used smaller flash files as 'part' of a entire web page.  For example, a small flash video player section with a combo box to select the video to play; this swf file would be sized at about 600px wide by 400px high. Then I would just put that in a div tag and add it to my web page.  I am trying to do this with flex, but I am running into issues. It seems that the actual published swf wants to run at 100% of the browser window size. I tried adjusting these dimensions; first trying within flex in the <application> height and width props, but that didnt do the trick; then tried to just use the published .swf file in the web page, and set its <object> properties to my required height and width, which 'almost' works but still falls apart when the video player's full screen button is pressed.
    So, is it possible to use a flex 'app' as part of a web page, or was flex intended to run on its own and 'not' as part of a web page? Thanks in advance!

    You definitely can. I typically drop the Flash/Flex app into a "mainContent" div within my larger page structure, so my page would look something like this:
    <html>
    <style type="text/css">
         #mainContent {height: 600px; width: 900px;}
    </style>
    <body>
    <div id="topNav">BLAH</div>
    <div id="sideNav">BLAH</div>
    <div id="mainContent">
    <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
                id="MyFlashApp" width="100%" height="768"
                codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/swflash.cab">
                <param name="movie" value="MyFlashApp.swf" />
                <param name="quality" value="high" />
                <param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" />
                <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
                <embed src="MyFlashApp.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#FFFFFF
                    width="100%" height="100%" name="MyFlashApp" align="middle"
                    play="true"
                    loop="false"
                    quality="high"
                    allowScriptAccess="sameDomain"
                    type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
                    pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer">
                </embed>
        </object>
    </div><!-- close mainContent -->
    </body>
    </html>
    Note that I'm only using the HTML approach, but the Javascript should work just as well. With the flash set to width=100% and height=100%, it will fill the enclosing div, but that's it. So, if you wanted to make this expand vertically but not horizontally, just set your CSS style to height: 100% and leave width a px or em value. Note that the enclosing divs (i.e. if you had a wrapper div around the navs and mainContent) would also have to expand/contract.
    I don't know about the effects of going full screen, though.
