Yes, it appears that Adobe has completely removed the Flex 3 documentation. I encountered this a few weeks ago. In case you didn't see it - have a look at this forum thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5943888. There are some links to downloads of the Flex 3 PDF documentation. I have not seen or heard of any mirrors or downloadable versions of the HTML version of the Flex 3 docs. Hope that helps.

Okay, thanks.. I guess it would eliminate quite some concern with many users if somebody changed the 4 into a 5 in the docs download zip.
There might be more developers like me with a Java background -- and we are used to having access to libraries and documentation accurate to third-level version numbers, so if Adobe expects developers not to worry too much if it still says 3.4 but is actually 3.5, and given the far from bug free SDK, then you might not know your users too well.
I could imagine that updating the docs would be worth its time.

Wish To Use Flex 2 For My University Project

Dear All
I am a mature student studying a Computer Science Degree in
the UK .
For my final year project, I am creating a Stock Market
Simulation with a Database back end (e.g. SQLite ?) and some kind
of front end, both to be run a a stand-alone machine.
I have a 28 weeks to design, build and run it for my
supervisors. I would like to push myself academically by building
the software using Flex 2, for the GUI and even to carry out any
calculations or processing needed for the simulation to operate
correctly.
My questions are
1) Is it possible to create the simulation as I can find no
definitive way to connect Flex 2 directly to a database back end in
a similar way to ADO.net?
2) If it is possible which book do you recommend to get the
best and quickest results out of Flex 2?

You are correct, Flex does not natively connect to any
database. Further, security restrictions on both the browser and
the Flash Player prevent access to *any* client resources, such as
the filesystem.
So if you use standard Flex, you will need some back-end web
technology. This can be almost any platform/language you choose.
Now, the newest, coolest thing in the Adobe world is AIR. AIR
applications can be written using Flex, Flash, HTML and javascript,
and have full access to client asseets. AIR is essentially an
internet delivered desktop application.
AIR has SQLLite database built-in.
AIR is currently in public Beta. I do not know what will be
available as far as non-commercial or educational licensing when it
is realeased.

Error when launching Flex Builder 3

Adobe Flex 3 Dashboard and Iframe

I am new to Adobe Flex; I have downloaded the source for a Dashboard provided by ESRI from the following link: http://examples.adobe.com/flex3/devnet/dashboard/main.html , I played with the source and I managed to understand some of the methods used. I am trying to use one of the panels to browse PDF document using the IFrame method, can you please help.

Thank you for your response. But, I think you mean to say I would have 4 pods, the 2nd being transparent but that would not look good from user point of view. I should have been more clear about the display. Sorry about that. Actually, I wanted the 1st pod width=100%, as follows:

How to call the built in functions from flex?

I want to use some of the Built in functions like the twelvesprints.getActivityOwnerId() in flex. From the java example i could make out that we needed to import some classes to do this but was unable to find them for flex.

Flex 3.5 data visualization license

Hi,
For Flex 3.5, the data visualization library is freely available, but it's licensing is unclear to me. Do I still need the Flex Builder license if I want to use it in a commercial product?
The legal stuff page (http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Legal+Stuff#LegalStuf f-LicensesofthevariousFlexSDKpackages) mentions:
"Adobe Add-ons for Open Source Flex SDK – This package contains all of the items that are in the Adobe Flex SDK and not in the Open Source Flex SDK. Downloading this file will allow you to bring the Open Source Flex SDK to parity with the Adobe Flex SDK. This package includes the Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR, the advanced font encoding libraries, and the code that allows licensing of things like the Data Visualization components. All of these elements are licensed under the Adobe Flex SDK license."
But I don't understand what that means. Is "code that allows licensing of data visualization" something else than the "data visualization" library?

The Data Visualization components were open sourced, but done so in a somewhat quiet and lazy manner. Nobody ever bothered to update the descriptions on the open source download page to reflect the change and (as far as I can tell) they never bothered to properly repackage it. If you want the source, you also have to go digging through the Flex SVN. Reading the source, you can find all kinds of details that were deliberately undocumented reflecting when Adobe didn't really want you messing with it and/or wanted to give you a reason to pay. No cleanup. Just released as-is.
For me it's been great since I am at last able to finally dive in and understand how the components work, extend them, and can often fix the quirks fairly easily.

SAML and Flex with BlazeDS

We're trying to set up a SAML integration with our Flex/BlazeDS app. It is not going well. By not going well I mean we can't figure out how to get the @#%@# thing to work. We're very experienced with Flex, REST, SOAP, etc. but SAML is something we can't get a handle on.
Does anyone have ANY suggestions, how-to-guides, etc. that could lead us in the right direction?

Global Error Handling in Flex

Hello All,
I want to know if there is away to do Global Error Handling in Flex so that in case of any error, the pop-up (showing the exception stack trace) on the client machine should not come, instead I would be able to handle the exception in a more subtle manner.
Can I do something at the application level to prevent this ?? or should it be handled in each Flex method individually, code enclosed between try-catch blocks ?

Flex and EJB with JBOSS

Hi!
I have a web application running on JBOSS 4.0.4 and using EJB/EJB3.
The main goal is simple, i need to substitute some JSP pages with flex.
I'm a total newbie with flex and i don't even know how to get started.
What do i need? Only BlazeDS or something more? Is there some tutorial with a step by step explanation?
