  • Flex Mobile Development...

I have started to work on mobile development using Flex 4.5 recently.
But basically I need some clarifications on Flex 4.5 mobile development.
    1. What kind of mobile development can we do in Flex 4.5 SKD ?
    2. What kind of mobile apps can we build using Flex 4.5 SDK ? (I mean just basic apps or some complex apps like requesting servers and displaying some charts and graphs, playing videos and image gallery on the devices etc...)
    3. What is the difference in developing mobile apps using Flex 4.5 SDK and Platform based SDK's (like Android SDK for android or iOS SDK for apple or Blackberry SDK for balckberry) ?
These are the basic questions I have right now...
Can somebody answer these questions ?

m*a*s*h* - you seem to be a very knowledgable and educated gentleman - do you know by any chance if  we can write a video app for ios using FB4.5 yet? I am using the actionscript  netStream/video classes and a uicContainer etc.
I am not sure if I am unsuccessful because it is impossible, or because I am doing someting wrong - and I can't see the answer anywhere yet.
    Information much appreciated,
    ys

  • Flex and mobile development for webOS?

Do the 'Hero' and 'Burrito' products provide the ability to implement Flex code for the webOS platform?  Or is the webOS platform not supported yet?  If Flex isn't ready for the webOS platform now, then I suppose I will need to use JavaScript and HTML 5 on webOS for now.
The webOS platform is the go-forward strategy for Hewlett-Packard for both smart phones and tablets.

The right place to look for updates on Flex is http://flex.apache.org
The good thing is that activities are still going on. The bad things are that:
    - Unless the dependency to Adobe air is cut, Flex as an open source project is bound to fail imho. See FlexJS for updates on that point
    - Current activties seem to be focused around making things more polished rather than working on hard stuff (typically developing an independent and open source runtime execution engine => flexJS)
    So...
For a small company, home development, not so business critical applications, I recommend warmly Flex, since it is one of the best (if not the best) cross-platform mobile development environment (Very good performances if used appropriately, very good programming environment, lots of components, structured language, lots of documentation and tutorials, easy to design, etc.)
for business critical applications... The risk is high !

  • Alert in adobe air / mobile development

I can't seem to do Alert.show like I do in regular flex apps,
I can't import mx.controls.Alert is there a equivalent in adobe air or how do you go about popping up error messages?

So is there Alert.show() for adobe air/mobile developement??? I was wonder it hasn't been added or is there an alternative for it?

  • Flex 4.6 Mobile Forms

There doesn't seem to be much discussion about the lack of mobile form support in a Flex 4.6 mobile apps - does anyone have any suggestions as to where is the best place to get started on a multi-page/view form running?
As far as I can tell from the AS3 documentation - <s:Form> can run on a mobile device - IF you develop your own mobile skin.
I would have thought there would be a huge outcry over lack of mobile form support - but as far as I can tell through much googling and research offical Adobe Evangalist blogs - no one seems to need or want mobile forms?
Am I alone here? Once again, any suggestions on developing multi-view spanning forms??

You don't have access to FORMS, but you can build your own form-like layouts. I've been laying them out myself. Using HGroups nested inside VGroups etc ... It takes more time, but on the mobile devices, you want to pay more attention to UI anyway.

  • Adobe Flex within SAP NetWeaver Developer

    Hello,

    Hi
NetWeaver provides the ability to develop portal content without programming through Visual Composer (Outside-in approach).
    SAP NETWEAVER VC
    • Visual Composer is a visual modeling tool that enables sophisticated
content development for the SAP NW Portal merely by dragging and
dropping appropriate objects and establishing relationships between them.
    No programming required.
    • Visual Composer is completely Web based. Business experts can sit next to
the business users and access Visual Composer from any machine to build or
customize to reflect the business needs on demand
    • The purpose of Visual Composer is to provide a visual tool that enable
customers quick and easy content development thereby
    – Minimize the time and effort to create content
    – Lead to quicker go live decision
    – Reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
    – Increase ROI

    Where to download VC?
    Visual Composer as Modelling Tool
Models designed in Visual Composer can be deployed to run in one or more technology engines, including SAP HTML/B and Flex. The same model can be deployed to more than one environment, although not all components and controls are fully supported in each. Visual Composer implements a proprietary XML-based Visual Composer Language as its source code for creating the models. Only at deployment is the model actually compiled into the executable code required by the selected UI technology. The result is a model once run
anywhere capability. The models that you build in Visual Composer are generated in Generic Modeling Language (GML) code. To deploy your application to a portal, the GML code
must be compiled into a language supported by the portal. During compilation, warnings and possible errors may be discovered, enabling you to check the model validity. The compiled content is deployed directly to the portal, in the runtimeenvironment that you select. In runtime, transactional content can run through HTML/B and Flex, while
analytic content which may require a more animated environment may run through Flex. The models deployed by Visual Composer to the portal include runtime metadata, which is stored with the model in the PCD and exported in the business package, for delivery to customers.

  • ResourceBundle error in NetWeaver Developer Studio MI 2.5 SP16 Patch 3.

    SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio
    Version: 2.0.19
    Build id: 200610270428
MDK Mobile Development Kit Tools v2.5.13
    Java: j2sdk 1.4.0 Win
    Mobile client: MI 2.5 SP16 Patch 3
    Running MAU v1.0 SR 5
    Downloaded:
    MAM FOR UTILITIES 1 0 SP05 05042006
In the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio I imported the MAU_eclipse.war from MAM FOR UTILITIES 1 0 SP05 05042006 using the MDK as MAU.war.
Yet, without implementing any changes, just to test, I exported the MAU project into a war file in the following path: C:\Program Files\SAP Mobile Infrastructure\webapps\MAU.war.
    I renamed the existing folder C:\Program Files\SAP Mobile Infrastructure\webapps\MAU to MAU_Old
Then, I started MAU from within the NetWeaver Developer Studio by selecting Run, Run.
The client application launched and the new MAU.war file was automatically unpacked C:\Program Files\SAP Mobile Infrastructure\webapps\MAU
The application opens and can be successfully logged into from the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio.
When the MOBILE ASSET MANAGEMENT FOR UTILITIES link is selected in the client application, error messages appear for example.
See below for the full error messages.
It appears the errors below might be somewhat straightforward, mentioning that the resource bundle could not be found.
Please assist regarding how to ensure the resource bundle can be found and properly loaded for example or what else could be the issue.
Please note that the application opens and can be successfully navigated by launching and logging into C:\Program Files\SAP Mobile Infrastructure\MobileEngine.exe directly.
The issue is launching from within the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio for running or debugging.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Hello,
MDK plug in is as bad as NWDS itself. Since the mobile applications are really just a java application, you do not need special plugin for developing them. I STRONGLY suggest to take a look at this blog entry I did when I was working on MAM at SAP:
How to set up NWDS or Eclipse without MDK

  • Good resource for HTML + JS mobile development

    Hello,
It seems that while Adobe AIR is focusing strongly on mobile now, the resources for delveloping for it almost only limited to Flex. I've already spent a lot of time coding in HTML, CSS3 and I'm not intended to switch to Flash, Flex. My question is, that anybody aware of any good tutorial on HTML based mobile development with AIR?
It should be the same as a desktop app, because AIR's philosophy is write once, use anywhere, but there must be some issues that we sould be aware of.
    Thanks,
    Tibor

I don't work for Adobe, so I don't know their reasons. This is just what they have public communicated about the AIR for mobile solution. I think some of the choices about AIR were about time to market, and the number of users. Heck, there are people upset that it doesn't support ActionScript 2.
Actually, Adobe seems quite committed to the web standard solution tools as well. They are hiring jQuery experts and are committing improvements back into the jQuery framework. I expect to see some real mobile based enhancements in Dreamweaver to support developers who want to build mobile web apps. To that end I think PhoneGap and jQuery are going to be your best friends for your development tool chest.
AIR does have a StageWebView, you could just create an instance of that and attempt to build you app in it, but I personally would recommend PhoneGap
Hope this clears up any questions,
    Chris

  • Is there any future in doing mobile development in flash CC

    Hello all,
I was after peoples thoughts on if there is any future in doing mobile development in flash CC?
Initially I was quite excited but I have just tried to put something together and have hit some hurdles quickly.
At this stage the cons seem to be outweighing the pros.
    As I see it
    Pros are.
        •    Multi-platform deployment (write once and output to many devices)
        •    Easy to use flash
        •    Large resource of action-script.
        •    Supported by Adobe (I hope..)
    Cons are
        •    Poor multi touch support (no double tap support)
        •    No easy way of getting user input (as in uipicker etc)
        •    Poor performance (not being native code)
        •    Uncertain future of flash  /  flex
        •    Can not use any flash vector
        •    Dependant on if device will keep allowing flex

I'd have to adjust that list of cons a bit, going point by point:
    ...no double tap support
While it's true that not every gesture has been coded in AIR, you can always implement them yourself. In fact the ones you tend not to see are the easiest to implement. Double tab can easily be duplicated by a single object.
In a view you wish to utilize it you can simply use a single object to store the last object tapped and the getTimer() it was tapped. Adding one more line of code to see if the last time it was tapped was "quickly enough", you'll know if the user double tapped.
Yes, it's not ideal that they didn't wrap under a dozen lines of code for you, but I wouldn't say it lacks support unless it was either incredibly difficult to implement yourself, or impossible.
    ...as in uipicker etc
There are (as you said) substantial resources out there for all sorts of Flash based components. They can all be used in your project, just as on the web. You'd be smart to stick to anything GPU accelerated, like FeathersUI.
That said I'd say there's a LOT more components already developed of all sorts for Flash than any native SDK.
Poor performance (not being native code)
Stage3D performs quite amazingly. About as close to native (or better) as you can get, depending on what you're doing. The only difference is you have the power of a familiar multimedia engine wrapped around it so you're not stuck ripping apart native SDK components until they don't look like themselves (otherwise the app looks slapped together).
I suggest you try the previously linked GPU controls before you think the performance is actually poor.
Uncertain future of flash  /  flex
Can't comment here, the roadmap is as unpredictable as the mobile landscape itself. Flash has a ton of uses outside mobile apps or website video/banners. It's used to make kiosks, top tier presentations, learning tools for students new to programming, sophisticated/interactive animations and 3d, etc.
    Flex is completely different.
Can not use any flash vector
I'm not sure what you mean by this. I use plenty of them. I typically use the graphics system to draw dytnamic interface elements and then raster them into bitmaps for presentation in Stage3D.
Dependant on if device will keep allowing flex
The device doesn't "allow" SWF or Flex. It is compiled down to ARMv7 compatible code. It has no idea what created the code. C++, Obj-c, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby or even LOLScript could be ported as long as the target is ARMv7 compatible code (soon to be ARMv8 64bit, Apple opening that door).
That all aside, I've definitely been scorched by the differences between implementations of Android and iOS with AIRs limitations. While you're using the majority (hopefully) of your code base for both targets, you will definitely have differences to conform to the platforms needs.
In the end, having had plenty of experience with the pitfalls of both, I see 2 things, which has already been living amongst us the entire time.
    1) AIR is being used where there is a need that no other runtime fills quite so nicely.
With Adobe Native Extensions and a sophisticated 2D/3D GPU leveraging multimedia engine behind you, it's hard to find any other authoring environment more desirable.
Even though Phonegap has native extensions, I think we can all pick out a webpage-as-an-app easily. AIR is far more difficult to spot because your imagination is the limit.
That said, much like in the beginning, Flash was utilized to solve all our video/audio codec and font problems. We abused and over used it until technology matured so we could properly handle these issues. That leads to:
    2) The web is maturing the requirements of browsers to the point they're becoming multimedia engines or hosts themselves. Requiring them to implement 2D Canvas, WebGL and standardized JavaScript and CSS specification, we're maturing the web enough to replace AIR.
Now that browsers allow JavaScript to power single application pages (SAP), apps will probably start to fall off in usage, much like the abuse of Flash. Apps only solve a current problem, lack of acceess to capability. Soon we probably won't need Phonegap and native extensions as the only way of developing a truely sophisticated device site.
I imagine users would rather just use their browser to load a web address which can store everything necessary to operate with offline storage, rather than lurking through a sea of hundreds of thousands (or millions+) apps. And once again people will return to the matured web with little to no need for everything to be AIR, native code or some variant.
    Change is constant..

  • Flex Error #1001: Digest mismatch with RSL error

I apologize if this is not the correct location for this question but it was the closest I could find.
I am working in salesforce trying to add a new content pack.  This screen uses a tool written in flash.  The screen that comes up is an error with the following:
Flex Error #1001: Digest mismatch with RSL
    https://cs13.salesforce.com/_swf/121310/sfc/flex/framework_3.5.0.12683.swf.
Redeploy the matching RSL or relink your application with the matching
    library.
I have been working with SalesForce support but they don't have a clue and want to punt to Adobe.
The support staff at SalesForce has no trouble accessing the page with the flash control from thier pc.  I have tried several computers in my office and from several browsers (IE 9 and Chrome).  I have reinstalled Flash Player 11 and cleared browser caches.  Nothing seems to work.
It has to be something common to computers in my office or my network.  All of the information I can find on the Internet talks about rebuilding the application and redeploying it.  I can't do that since this is part of SalesForce and not something I own.  Also, it works for them on their computers.
I am running windows 7 64 bit.  I have McAfee running (and have checked that Flash is not blocked).
The flash player itself works when I go to the Adobe site and try other content.
The only other odd thing I have is that my hard drive is encrypted.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Chris,
I have cleared the browsser and flash cache data then restarted browswers and windows. Still no luck.  I reverted the flash player back to 10.3 after following the instructions in the link you provided for a clean install but still get the error.  SalesForce did not state what version of FlashPlayer they are using but I will check with them later today.
All of the machines that I have tested on have been at the office and all have encrypted hard drives with PGP desktop.  I am going to try my laptop on my home network tonight to see if we are blocking something during the download.
This is driving me nuts.  I know is it something specific to the machines in the office or the office network but I can't find it.
Thanks for your help.  Please let me know if you have any other ideas.
    Mike

  • Adobe Air vs HTML5 vs Native in Mobile Development

Just now, I read an article "HTML5 vs. Native: What`s a Mobile Developer to Do?" (http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Application-Development/HTML5-vs-Native-Whats-a-Mobile-Developer- to-Do-648997/), and this make me think of Adobe AIR.
For those of you who have used Adobe AIR to develop mobile apps, how do you think about it's performance, features/functionality (API), and stability as compare with HTM5 done with phonegap?
Please share your experience and opinion here. Thanks.

  • General questions about mobile development

    Hello all,
We need to choose a multi-targeting development platform for mobile devices and need some expert views before deciding. Our options are going ahead with HTML 5 and CSS (which limits us in some ways, especially file uploading and downloading limitations with mobile Safari) and of course Adobe Air.
I have some questions and appreciate if you answer them.
What do you think? Is mobile development with Adobe Air is mature enough?
Is there a need to install Adobe Air runtime before running mobile applications or the runtime is embedded to the application in some way?
Is it possible to access file system of mobile devices?
Is it possible to use SQLite on iOS or is there an alternative?
In a comment to a blog post, someone said that Apple doesn't allow Flash to communicate with web, is that true? (I don't think it's true but needed to confirm)
This is it for now, thanks in advance.

Lots of questions! Here are answers in the order you said things:
Amongst HTML5 limitations is the ability to play sound. If you look at Google's version of Angry Birds, it uses Flash to play the sound. That wouldn't be possible in iOS.
Adobe AIR is very nearly mature enough. Lots of people already have apps in the stores with the current version, but one of these days it will get better still.
The runtime is part of the app package on iOS. With Android the device may come with AIR installed, but if not, only the first AIR based app the user installs will trigger an automatic install of AIR, or an update of that if need be.
You can't roam around the file system of mobile devices, but you can save and load data.
I don't know if you can have SQLite in AIR based apps. If that becomes the most important feature, and if AIR doesn't do it, you could look at LiveCode, it supports SQL. http://www.runrev.com/
Flash cannot load in anything from the web that includes executable code. That isn't a Flash limitation, it's an iOS restriction. It can use images, sounds, video, and Flash animations from the web. And it can read from or write to web services.
