Flex...is it really that good?

I hear all these things about flex being a rapid development
environment for flash apps. I have been using flash for quite some
time, I don't really use the timeline nor do any timeline scripting
I just use AS3 classes. So I think flex may be good for me. So I
download the trial and so far I am not very impressed. It seems to
me like just using markup (mxml) to layout and control components
but outside of the components theres not much you can do? (I am not
saying this is the way it is, just the way it seems to be so far in
my very little experience with it) I tried to make a new Sprite()
and it wouldn't let me because it didn't extend the core mx
component. So far to me it seems like Flash is like C++ and I can
use AS to create everything, and Flex is like VB.
I plain on reading the programming flex 3 book by o'reilly
scheduled for release next month, and I think I really must be
missing something because most people swear by flex, I just don't
see it yet. But as an actionscript developer if flex can make like
easier for me I would really want to understand it.
Please note I am not saying flex is not good...I am just
saying I dont understand what makes it good...and I would like to
hear reasons that make flex good (over programming in the flash
IDE).
What are your thoughts?
Thanks

There are a lot of people who use Flex Builder to edit Flash
as files,
because it's way better with things like code hinting and
shortcut keys.
That alone will save you huge amounts of time.
I'm not sure about what you mean "outside of the components".
The
components contain HUGE amounts of functionality that would
take you YEARS
to reproduce from scratch, so that's like saying "if it
weren't for that big
hole in the ground, the Grand Canyon wouldn't be all that."
And you can
modify and extend these pretty much infinitely. And if there
aren't any
that do what you like, you can create your own from scratch.
So, yes, the
bulk of what you get from Flex is the components. But to
dismiss them is
missing the point.

  • Is mac keeper really that good?

I currently use Tech Tool Deluxe but am considering purchasing Mac Keeper. Is this application really that good? I know that "good" has many interpretations but overall, I'm interested in hearing peoples' feedback on the app in general. Thanks!

Search the forums, you will find the consensus that Mackeeper is not a good idea. Not a good idea at all.
As far as I can tell, this product is a combination of new interfaces for standard mac stuff (e.g., they have a Login Items interface for crying out loud) and a bunch of utilities you might need if you were running windows but which, generally speaking, are completely unnecessary for the typical user.
In fact, it seems to me that, unless you have some very specific problems, "system utilities" are unnecessary and principally aimed at a former windows-user market.

  • Buy a headphone,  Is B&W p5 really that good? Please suggest headphones

I would like to buy a headphone, I hear orchestra/new age more and I hope he headphone will fit these styles, if there's any headphone that can enhance orchestra/symphony and make the music even more beautiful? Is b&W p5 really that good and worth the money?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
So, they didn't do anything about it since original Z came out? If the problem is well known, it should be fixed :/ I just checked my Z2 against iPhone 5S with P5 headphones and since iPhone is not as loud as HTC One S, it is a noticeably louder than Z2.
Dedicated dac-amp sounds fine but it is another component and I would have to fit all this somehow in my pocket. Sounds like a bulky solution for on the go mode.
Anyone from Sony can say something about this?
    Greetings,

  • Are 64bit cpu's really that good?

Im planning on updating my system at the end of June...and i originally planned on getting a xp3200 with some pc3200 ram...but i keep looking at the AMD 64's..and become more interested everytime i do...im a VERY avid gamer...and dont want to lose any of that...are the 64's that good yet..or should i wait a year or so?
and my last question...would a amd 64 3000 be "alot" faster then say a xp3200 or would i even see the difference(forgive my ignorance..im new to the 64 bit thing)
    thx

Definitely, go for the AMD Athlon 64. The core doesn't matter that much.
Newcastle has half of the L2 cache of Clawhammer, but its speeds are higher.
    Here is an example:
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Clawhammer:
    L1 cache 128KB
    L2 cache 1MB
    Core Clock Speed: 2000MHz
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle:
    L1 cache 128KB
    L2 cache 512KB
    Core Clock Speed: 2200MHz
The difference between the two cores is minimal, but in games the Newcastle core will be better. In Zip compression, for example, the Clawhammer core will probably be faster.
Regarding memory modules get the fastest possible otherwise the system will be slow (because the CPU will have to wait for the memory outcomes, the memory controller is directly in the CPU). Read posts in this forum and before buying any memory modules, consult your choice with Forum Members. Go for something like http://www.geilusa.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=37.
But thats only if you want to buy the system now.
If I was you, I would wait for Socket 939 to come out. This should happen in the next 3-6 months. Also, I would wait for the following:
    DDR2
    Serial-ATA 300
    PCI-Express
    BTX
    So my final advice is:
    Wait

  • Is the Apple iPod AV Cable really that good?

My dad and mom are suppose to be bringing me home the Apple iPod AV Cable. I bought HS Musical from iTunes and they had never seen it, and want to, so I told them about the cable.... but anyways... I read the reviews for it, but I really want to know does it really have good video and sound quality?
I mean I will be hooking it up to a 32" Sony Trinitron (Wega) tv and I want it to look good and sound good...

Also, connecting to the cable to an Apple Universal Dock (with the iPod docked (instead of connecting it directly to the iPod)) will make the sound and video better.

  • Problems with slow fps (or is my computer really that bad?) [solved]

I'm having quite some trouble with my fps in games like StarCraft 2 (actually it's just here that I noticed it). Anyway I've decided to test how good my computer actually is using unigine heaven benchmark.
And it's really bad. As I said I have slow fps in Starcraft in which fps is around 15, but in unigine it falls to average 4/5 depending on how I set it.
While my computer is quite old, it's still not that old, and I don't have any problem with other graphically demanding games like C&C3 or Medieval 2: Total War.
    My hardware is:

    System memory: 2008 Mb
    Video memory:  512 Mb
    (this is what unigine "shows")
Also under "render" unigine shows this:

Which, while I'm no expert, for me seems quite OK.
    So where's the problem?
Is my computer really that old already?
On the related note, sometimes KDE loses the window decoration or even more it just disappear. So it might be the nvidia driver (as you can see I use nvidia-beta).
But I'm not sure if it's the driver or is it the graphics card.
Thanks for any help. If nothing else you could at least tell your frame rate and hardware so I can compare if my computer is "where it supposed to be" or if something really is wrong with it.

Well I finally found the glxgears, and the fear I always feared, but didn't mentioned it in my OP came true. FPS is somewhere near the refresh rate of the monitor, and my monitor is also a TV (or should I say primary TV) so my refresh rate is 50hz or up to 60FPS. So I guess the actual and the biggest bottleneck is my monitor and not anything else. Well yeah not that my other hardware is any good, but I could say that the low FPS rate in StarCraft 2 and in Unigine Heaven is due to my bad monitor.
I can say this is solved, but not removed until I get a new monitor.
Edit: Actually there is another thing, how come that while my monitor refresh rate is 60; FPS in both Starcraft  and Unigine are so much lover - instead of 60FPS there are from 4-17FPS.

  • Is MacBook really a good product? Is it better then Windows, really?

Problems with random shutdowns, heat problems, etc. (Please take your time and read if you got the time and all that, thanks! Your a great person, really, you are!)
I walked went to the Apple Store in my city, I told about the heat issiue and he told me "Just bring it in and will fix it!" I was there to talk about their product since I was\am planing to buy new laptop. And I give it a thought, why would a dude from Apple Store tell me to deliver it to them so they can fix it (what? In 2-6 weeks, that is many hours without laptop at school, bad for my business.) And was there not a update now who would fix that problem? Strange he tells me to deliver and not talk about the patch or update, whatever you wanna call it. So the thing, yes the thing is I have read that it only makes the "air condition" go 24\7, that is what update does to fix the heat issiue, in my opinion that is not a fix. Apple MacBook "air condition" thing that makes noise was like not ment to go 24\7, it feels silly not even doing a thing and you will hear it just go, svsssh svsshh!
Now about one other thing, I tested a MacBook white with probably 1.83GHz and 512MB RAM...
It took about between 1-2 seconds to open a folder in MAC OS X or whatever you call it. Is that good? That scares me, really. If you get delay on 1-2 seconds just open a file, folder, native ordinary program, how about everything else? Heh!
Tell me the best things about MacBook and the worst things?

You really have two questions here:
    1) How good is the Macbook as a laptop computer?
    2) How good is OSX as an operating system?
Answer to #1: Apple computers have rated among the highest and best, including their laptops. They last longer, have a higher resale value, and usually have less problems. The MacBook is a new laptop with a new stuff included--things like a camera and Intel processer. So it is a "Rev A" as it were and like all such computers, especially delicate laptops, there have been hiccups.
These are getting addressed and fixed, however, as said, Apple has sold a lot of these computers--they're incredibly popular and most of them are problem free. So the percentage of problem computers has been fairly low and is getting lower. You have a much higher percentage chance of getting a good, problem free MacBook.
I have a problem free MacBook and it is an EXCELLENT laptop. The best I've ever had. The keyboard is amazing, the built-in camera wonderful, the screen stunning, the trackpad responsive. It's comparatively thin and lightweight. The magnetic plug has saved it from being pulled onto the floor by my clumbsy feet and by the cat. It's fast and responsive.
    2) OSX--OSX has been able to do everything that Visa claims it will be doing when it gets released in '07. And it's been doing it for several years now. In other words, Windows is lagging waaaaaaay behind Apple in the OS department.
I know you say you trust PC's but when it comes to Windows OS...why trust it? 95% of the market uses Windows. That means, no competition. That means, they don't have to give you anything good. They can write up a terrible OS and you're stuck with it--because you buy PC's and they run Windows.
Apple wants more market share, so they have to make their OS better so you'll want to use it.
What's more, because 95% of PC's use Windows, people who create viruses create them for that 95%. But not usually for Apples--the OS of which is hard to bug anyway.
So. Great OS that's not vulnerable to viruses. Why do you trust PC's again?
OSX is full integrated, that means everything works with everything else, seamlessly. And all the software to do all kinds of amazing things comes with your computer. Gratis. You don't pay extra, it's bundled with the computer. Programs for photos, animation, music, as well as mail, calendars, widgets, Quicktime, etc, etc, etc.
As if that's not enough...it can run Windows. So if you want to stick with Windows, you can.
I really don't know what more you want from a Laptop. A good one, that is.

  • Jacob- Really that's all ya got!

Jacob- We really do appreciate that you made a post, but really that's it. A lot of people here trusted BB paid money to secure a product that people from Sprint have been waiting years for, Loyal Sprint customers-that is something that is not valued obviously at BB. You can't even say we are expecting shipments this many times a week, or BB expects to have full inventory by this date. If Best Buy messed up just say so, people are very forgiving, let the people that were loyal enough to your company to place orders with BB know what the heck is going on, give the customer the choice (show BB has a sliver of ethical value) to get their phone elswhere if you can't deliver anytime soon. I have never seen a more misleading act from any Store ever. Jump in front of this issue BB, your lack of consideration for your customers is irreprehensable (sp).

Crimson you would not run a good business.
    1.  The release date was 3 days ago, the biggest electronic retail store should be on top of ordering a product.
    2.  If it was pre-ordered I should get mine when other stores customers got theirs, if they were planning to order late no sense calling it a pre-order.  It's now just an order.  A preorder would have to be "pre" Bestbuy apparently failed to understand the "pre" part sense they put the order for most sprint Iphones in after the release date.
    3.  Who are you and why do you care?  Did you order an Iphone?  Or do you think people actually care about your opinion.
If I asked you to give me $50 bucks for a reservation of an Iphone 4s, and then everyone around you got theirs but you probably wont get yours for a few more weeks because some incompetent people (like yourself) made a mistake, then the people suppose to check their mistakes made a mistake and then nobody told you there was a mistake and told you that you will get your Iphone when they have it, but wont clarify if they have even ordered it, and then they wont even help you when you go into the store and try to get your $50 dollars back and it's a struggle to get back to the way it was before best buy got in your life.
You sound like a very lazy person that doesn't care.  Apparently you are not waiting for an Iphone, so leave us alone.

You can have multiple currencies in your system.  But all the transactions at accounting happen only at company code currency level.  You can view report in alternate currency.  Please check with your FI consultant  He will guide you more on the use of currency.  You can have CC currency, Group Currency, etc.

  • Was It Really That Easy?

I've had quite a few Macs over the years, but my new 20" iMac 2.4 arrived Friday. Setup and transfer from the old G5 went great, but the machine started making a high pitched buzz the next day. When the screen dimmed automatically after it sat for a while it seemed to go away. During use it was back and I could get rid of it by turning the screen brightness down. I read a few scary stories on the boards here and decided to call Apple and get a case going.
The young lady had me do normal maintenance that I should have done first. The PMU reset and then a Pram reset. It quieted down and I'm typing away without a sound. I tried putting a bit of a load on the processor by opening a bunch of programs, but that made no difference and for this hour, at least, the whine/hum/buzz has not returned. Was it really that easy?
Could one of you more technical guys/gals tell me how a video/fan problem is solved by this simple procedure? Thanks.

OK, nearly 12 hours later I'm back at home and realize that the reset maxed the screen brightness. In toning it down a couple of notches the buzz/whine starts up again as loud as ever. This time, turning the brightness down starts it and turning it up to full quiets the noise. The opposite of before. Running the full Hardware Test shows nothing.
Time to call again, I guess.
