Flex memory? or Dual Memory for my iMac 27" (Late 2013)

Hello there, I have an iMac 27" (late 2013) with standard memory of 8GB (2x4GB). I just bought a 16GB kit (2x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz. I was planing on putting the 2x4GB (8GB) memory cards to my MacBook Pro (Late 2012) which only has 4GB and of-course upgrading the iMac 27 to 16GB.
MY QUESTION really is the following: Which configuration should do a better performance for my iMac:
1. Leaving just the standard upgrade of 16GB (2x8GB) memory
OR
2. Since the iMac has 4 empty slots, upgrading with 16GB (2x8GB) PLUS the 4GB (2x2GB) from my MacBook totaling 20GB
Will the second option work? Will it perform better than first option? PLEASE HELP
THANK YOU!!

No, they don't all need to be the same size, but they must be installed as matched pairs. If you now have 8 GBs installed in two of the four slots, then install 16 GBs in the empty slots - two 8 GB modules. RAM must meet the Apple specs for your computer.
You will find good products at OWC, DataMem, or Crucial.

  • Best ups for my new imac 27" - late 2013?

have an imac 27" late 2013, can anybody suggest the best  UPS for my Imac (and for india)

There is no "best", personally I have used an APC ES750 and have been very pleased. Things to look for are how many devices you intend to plug into the UPS, the computer, perhaps backup HD's etc.. Don't plug in items like printer, or other non essential devices. Other items to consider are how much battery life to you want with when the power does fail. Don't get caught up in the sine wave discussion, it's not essential not practical.

  • SUCCESS: Imac 27" Late-2013 Bootcamp to Windows 7

After one grueling day fighting with possibly every Bootcamp-related issue there is, I have finally installed Windows 7 on my brand new shiny iMac 27".
I have these threads to thank:
Boot Camp - Setup was unable to create a new system partition....from Windows install
1 Billion Other Threads on "Downloading Support Software"
    Here's the story so far:
The first problem was Bootcamp hanging forever on 'Downloading Support Software'. This could either mean my USB wasn't formatted right, or my connection was slow period (it wasn't). Many threads advised to manually download Bootcamp 5 software instead, but they failed to explain what should I use it for. How am I supposed to run and install this, when Bootcamp Assistant can't even install Windows in the first place? I was an octopus flailing in the dark, with so many questions but so few answers, some which were clearly over-tech for me to implement.
Then, at the stroke of midnight, after combining solutions I read in many threads, I have came up with a single dummy guide which I hope is useful to everyone who's hating Bootcamp right now.
Note: This is for iMac 27" Late-2013 (Low end Spec), Yosemite OSX.
    Things You Need:
    1. BootCamp5.1.5640 (If you're using a different model, refer to table here.)
The idea is to "manually" download the files that Bootcamp Assistant couldn't, which is possibly why it was forever stuck on 'Downloading Support Software'. The manual part, I understood - what nobody explained, was what to do with this file after. So here was what I did:
After unzipping all the files into a single folder, I compressed them again into a DMG file, using Disk Utility. (New > Disk Image from Folder)
The file is then renamed as 'WindowsSupport.dmg". After this, go to YourMac/Library/Application Support/Bootcamp/ and drop the DMG file there. Make a backup of the Bootcamp files, as you don't want to download it again. (Thank you, Loner T, I see you everywhere, you were my saviour in this one).
    2. A 8GB USB Stick or Ext Hard Drive
Here's something you should know before installing:
Windows 7: A 2.0 USB Flash Drive or HD, 2007 or earlier model. (The reason is because Windows 7 is not compatible with 3.0 USB sticks, which came out post 2008.) 8GB or higher.
Windows 8: Any 2.0/3.0 USB Flash Drive or HD, 8GB or higher. (Based on sources).
I wish someone had pointed this out to me earlier before I rushed out and bought a Kingston Traveler 3.0 USB. Le sigh. Well, now that you know, you can breathe a little easier knowing that you just saved yourself a potential issue + 4 hours of frustration. In the end, I managed to locate my sister's old HD (I used an old ext HD, 2006 model), deleted everything and will naturally apologize later.
    1. REMOVE ALL USB/HD except for the one you're gonna install Windows on. Apparently, this is important as it'll avoid some glitch.
    2. Open up Disk Utility, and erase/format your USB to FAT.
    3. Open up Bootcamp Assistant, and check all three options. You can never skip 'Downloading Support Software' anyway.
    4. BA will load, and when it hits 'DSS', it will prompt you for a confirmation to enter password. This will trigger that "WindowsSupport.dmg" file you just placed in the folder (it will disappear, and until now, I have no idea why. But apparently, it works, because for the first time, there was progress.) It sped up my download bar, although I still had to wait a bit. After a long while, it will proceed with SAVING SUPPORT SOFTWARE, and this is where you celebrate.
    5. Go through the rest of the steps, and Mac will reboot, this time, with Windows Installation.
    Windows Installation (Windows 7)
    1. Click Install Windows Now.
    2. You have the option of Upgrading Windows or Custom (Advanced) Install. Click Custom Advanced, then format Partition : Bootcamp.
    3. This is where you pray : You either proceed with the rest of the installation, OR, you get stuck with 'Unable to create system partition...' Have a look at the thread above for solutions. I didn't run into any problems whatsoever.
You should be able to take it from here.
Considering that this whole process nearly made me vomit blood, I am so so happy at installing this, I think I may have been channeling my inner geek girl. HOORAY!!!
EPILOGUE: I have also successfully installed my PS3 Dual Shock Controller, and now, I'm playing a heck lot of Windows games on my Mac like a happy fangirl. It's ON!

Thank you for posting your success story and a concise guide. Glad to see another happy user.

  • IMac 27" (late 2013) leave it on

Should I leave my iMac 27" (late 2013) on at all times or should I shut it down? This computer is for home use only.

Read the user manual that came w/your iMac on "sleep & shut down" instructions/recommendations.

  • PS3 connect to IMac 27 late 2013

I am considering purchase an Imac27 (late 2013), nevertheless due to lack of space I intend to connect the PS3 to be displayed the IMAC 27 late 2013
    Questions:
    1. Can IMAC 27 ( late 2013) be used as an PS3 display ?
    2. If the answer to the first questions is yes, what type of adaptors/cables are needed to a sucessfull PS3/Imac connection
    3. Can IMAC ( late 2013 version) display PS3 games without losing any resolution or image quality ?

    I'm not sure of anything.
You're there and know or can look and see what the socket in you wall looks like. As you are in Italy I assumed your outlet looks like
or if grounded there will be three pins.
Your Mac seems to have this type of plug on it. The UPS you are showing does not have this type of socket.
If you're in Italy it would seem the best thing is to buy from an Italian for at least European distributor. They should know what you need and have it.

  • MST Support for MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 - DisplayPort 1.2 - Will it ever happen? (with sources)

So back in October, I purchased a brand new Macbook Pro Retina (MBPr), fully loaded with top of the line specs.  I was soooo excited to have Thunderbolt 2 tech which Intel AND Apple describes as having DisplayPort 1.2a compatibility - which up to this point is unfortunately NOT the case.  The point of the information/questions and requests in this article is to engage a conversation about the issues of not having MST support after Apple falsely mislead their consumers to think otherwise - especially when it is clear the MBPr is capable.  Please read on...
Apple advertises that the Thunderbolt 2 ports on BOTH the MBPr and the new Mac Pro (NMP) will have 4K Display support with the famed 20gb/sec Ports (DisplayPort 1.2 only requires a little above 17gb/sec).  Now that the 10.9.1 update has been released, we have failed to see MST or Multi-Stream Transport enabled on the MBPr Late 2013.  Now, as for the New Mac Pro- it DOES have MST enabled in 10.9.1 with the AMD GPUs.  For all of you out there that's questioning what this means, short answer is basically the Mac Pro will be able to power a 4K Monitor at 60Hz through the Thunderbolt 2 Port but the New MBPr is stuck with only HDMI 1.4 support which tops out at 4K 30Hz. 30Hz is unacceptable for anything but movies or a photo slideshow.  At 30Hz the cursor will jump across the screen, eliminating any of the benefits of 4K.
    BUT it gets worse...
Apple can be seen advertising that the new MBPr 15" model can power a 4K monitor THROUGH the Thunderbolt 2 Port here: http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt - This article quotes the following:
"Now with Thunderbolt 2 built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect the latest 4K desktop displays and get double the bandwidth for your peripherals. And the two generations of Thunderbolt technology are compatible with each other."
Does this not let the consumer assume that the newest MBPr will be able to drive a 4K display through the Thunderbolt 2 Port?  I would say yes it does, but at the time I wrote this, the TB2 Ports can't power a 4K display because, as previously stated, MST is disabled in Mavericks for the 15" MBPr Late 2013.
NOW, later on Apple posted the following article on 4K support here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6008
4K support on the MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013)
MacBook Pro supports 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs at the following resolutions and refresh rates with the built-in HDMI port:
    3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz refresh rate
4096 x 2160 at 24 Hz refresh rate (mirroring is not supported at this resolution)
In the article above the New Mac Pro is listed as having support for a 4K Display with the Thunderbolt 2 Port (or MST DisplayPort 1.2a Technology) at 60Hz with no problem.  This leads myself and many others to believe that MST will NEVER be enabled on the newest MacBook Pro Retina with Nvidia GPUs. Yes, 4K IS supported but ONLY through the HDMI 1.4 port, which has the limitation of only 30hz.  This two-faced advertising is extremely upsetting to a LOT of people, including myself.
Interestingly enough, THIS IS NOT a hardware issue.  If one ventures into Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp and connects a 4K Display via the Thunderbolt 2 (or through DP1.2) Port, the Display registers at 60Hz, thus proving that the Thundberbolt 2 Hub Controller is completely capable of MST DisplayPort functionality.  Clearly this a driver issue with Apple, Nvidia or Intel or any combination.  What Apple has done here is forcing any professional that desires stable and clear 4K technology through their MacBook Pro Retina to do so only using Windows 8.1 on their own machines!  Definitely an oxymoron if you ask me...
Later on when the Mac Pro was ready for ordering, Apple placed the Sharp PN-K321 as a compatible option for a 4K Display.  On the Store page featuring the (over three thousand dollar) Sharp 4K display, located here http://store.apple.com/us/product/HD971LL/A/sharp-32-pn-k321-4k-ultra-hd-led-mon itor?fnode=53 Apple states the following:
"Note that 4K DisplayPort operation is only compatible with the new Mac Pro (Late 2013)."
All of that being said, and I'm terribly sorry for my wordy ranting...
This brings me to a final two requests to ANYONE reading this post:
    a) Has anyone working with the new 10.9.2 Beta Update seen evidence that DisplayPort 1.2 capabilities will be enabled for the new MacBook Pro Retina (Nvidia 750M) with the promised "Graphics Driver Updates" within the next Mavericks update?
    and
    b) To others that purchased or were/are thinking of purchasing a new MacBook Pro Retina with TB2 Ports: If you are just as upset as me about this crushing blow to consumers that just purchased a $3,000 laptop that were promised something that wasn't delivered - I urge you please, write to Apple and let them know they are making a mistake.  You can do this though the support page or through http://www.apple.com/feedback
Thank you for your precious time, and if anyone has anything to contribute to this issue, please jump in....

    GOOD NEWS!
The Mavericks 10.9.3 update adds official support for Thunderbolt 2, 4K!
I'm not sure if you will be able to daisy chain anything to the 4K display.  I've read that the design of Thunderbolt 2 includes support for DisplayPort 1.2 multi-stream (MST), which allows this type of daisy chaining with 4K, but we don't know if Apple has this supported on it's machines.  Apparently it's been buggy in development because the graphics driver needs to work correctly with the Thunderbolt 2 host controller.  I'm sure they will work it out if they haven't already.
The above is all via found information on this topic, but you can follow some more discussion here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1713876
One more note on Thunderbolt worth sharing: always keep your fastest peripherals closer to the computer in the chain. If you have a TB1 device directly connected to the computer, anything further down the chain will be limited to TB1 speed/capability regardless of it's native speed.  Always connect TB2 devices first, and save anything TB1 for the end of the chain.

why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro already comes with OS X Mavericks. However, if you try to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you will get a message telling you that your MacBook Pro is not compatible, when it is.
This is caused because the Late 2013 MacBook Pro is running a special OS X Mavericks version which is different than the version available in the Mac App Store. This makes that you get an error message when you try to download OS X Mavericks even when you are using it.
Instead of downloading OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you can still download OS X Mavericks to reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 You will be able to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store when your MacBook Pro uses the same version as all other Macs

  • IMac 27" Late 2013 Wi Fi Log in Issue

    Hello everyone,
I apologize if my questions have been asked in the past. I'm completely new to the Apple Mac OS. I bought a new iMac 27" in the middle of 2014 and use it about once or twice a week and have had no issues to-date. I'm still in the process of learning though so my use of it is limited to basic emailing, web browsing and Skype.
In the last 2 weeks I have had problems logging into my Wifi network at home. It would not log on even after I had reset the modem. After trying and rebooting my iMac 3-4 times it would finally do so without changing anything in the it. I'm not sure what is causing it, but thought I would ask here.
What would be causing the log in issue to my Wi Fi network?
Do I need to be concern with the findings in the Etre check?
Startup after logging in my password would take longer than usual...what would be causing it?
Here is the result from the Etre scan. I guess what concerns me is in red...and also if it shows the Wi Fi log in issue.
Thank you in advance for your help and advice.
