Flex Pro 2 15 External GPU potential. Help Please!!!!

Hi guys and girls i have just purchased a new Flex Pro 2 15 and am quite happy with it (apart from windows 8 lol) but am at a slight loss with the graphics. Its ok being a Nvidia 840m but not quite powerful enough certain appliactions. So ive been doing some research about External GPU's and possibilities of it. My problem is im not sure as to whether it would be possible with this laptop at all regarding the internal PCIe, i know it is currently occupied by the wireless card but i dont mind removing this and having a USB device.Does anybody know whether it would be possible to run a GPU from this expansion? Many thanks in advance Ashley

Bumps! any ideas guys

    What have you bought?
What model Mac are you running?
What input sources are available on the display you are connecting it to?

  • My MacBook Pro is running unbelievable slow! Help please!

My MacBook is completely up to date, but lately has been running really slow. the fan comes on occasionally but not too often. It does seem to be getting a little hotter then usual, which worries me. I LOVE my Mac and I am very worried about it crashing on me! I was wondering if anyone knew a possible solution, if maybe it's dust causing it? HELP please!
Thanks you SO much in advance!

User Tip:  How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
Per your user manual:  Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
From http://http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro/care/ MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.

  • R7770 / Win XP pro driver issue - directx not supported help please!

Hi guys sorry to bother you, and for such a long question.
I've just purchased a brand new MSI branded AMD radeon r7770 to replace my nvidia 8800gt graphics card which finally bit the dust last week.
Despite uninstalling the old nVidia drivers, trying the ones that came with the card and downloading and installing the very latest versions from both the AMD and MSI sites, I still cannot get directx to work. At first glance, the drivers look to be installed OK, (the Catalyst Control Center starts up etc) but none of my games run, and the desktop refresh is incredibly slow. KSP's crash log helpfully states that it cannot find the device driver. When I run Dxdiag.exe all the directx diagnostic tags are greyed out and the info box states that the card does not support directx.
The system is pretty ancient but should still be up to the task as it was a well speced gaming PC in its day:
Mboard: Asus P5K3 Deluxe (intel P35 chipset)
    CPU:      Intel core2duo Q6600 (quad-core)
mem:     4 gig Corsair ddr3 mem.
    PSW:     600W
    OS:      Win XP pro SP3
I'm aware that this is an old PCI-E 1.0 board and the card is designed around PCI-E 3.0, but the computer boots up and starts Windows just fine. Both the Bios and Windows detect the R7770 correctly. (I'd have thought if this was an issue - it wouldn't go past POST at all and begin beeping like crazy!)
To muddy the waters still further, as a experiment, I installed an old radeon card for test (a crappy Sapphire hd 2600 pro PCI-E version), which is about the same age as the rest of the system.
I couldn't find the drivers disk initally, so downloaded the relevant ones from Sapphire and AMD. Got EXACTLY the same problem as above: it looks as the drivers have installed but no Directx support (which is daft as I used to use that card games until I could afford to replace it with the 8800)
I tried everything I could think of for hours (including disabling driver signing security, stopping anti-virus software, trolling through the windows/ inf, System32 and System dirctories to weed out anything ATI - you name it) then miraculously found the old drivers for the HD 2600. Installed them with no probem at all - everything worked just as it should!
So, I looks to me like the XP drivers on the web are now garbage. Anyone else have similar problems or know of a workaround?
I'm not exactly rich so can't afford Win 7 or the dreaded Win 8  (which I loath) or a new PC, which is why i'm soldering on with this dinosaur!
The only thing I haven't done is splat Windows and do a clean install, do you think that'll help? If so why did the old radeon drivers work (win has been cleanly re-installed many a time since I last used that card, so there was no legacy junk lurcking in the windows diectory or it's registry)
Do you think I'd have better luck with NVidia? If so could you kindly recommend an alternative from them? I know an R7770 is a bit OTT for such an old system, but they are dirt cheap at the mo and not much more expensive than much less powerful cards.
Anyone have any thoughts about UBuntu? If it is a driver issue or there is no workaround, I may need to consider this route. Trouble is none of my legacy games will run on Linux and i'm not sure virtualization is available for my mboard.
Anyways, thanks for your time and for any suggestions you might make
    Regards
    Mike

Hi Flex, thanks for the quick reply and for the advice.
In the end i got it going by changing the boot.ini settings.
They were initially set with the /3GB /fastdetect switch to force the WinXp kernal to run in 1GB, and not take up 2GB as is it's default.
It was set that way to stop a 32bit game (KSP) crashing every 10 minutes or so, through lack of addressable memory.
All I did was simply set the boot.ini back to its default and directx sprung to life. I reset it back to 3GB to make sure it wasn't a fluke and as soon as I did, it killed directx again.
Maybe its a driver issue afterall - probably lack of proper XP support by AMD (This dosen't happen with the old- - 2008 vintage - version 4 ATI radeon drivers.) or perhaps its because the card has twice the memory over my old cards and therefore needs to access a higher portion of I/O allocation than is available in 32bit WinXP.
Its all a bit ironic really as i'm finding the R7770 runs like crap under dirx9 - i'm getting about 30% the frame rate of my old Nvida 8800GT and, as I can't use the 3GB switch anymore, it crashes every 5 mins or whenever I play any resource intensive game.
As the crashes are caused by lack of available address spaces under 32 bit systems, I've bitten the bullet and got 64bit Ubuntu. Got this working in the wee small hours last night - including the R7770 using the AMD catalyst drivers for Linux. Hopefully that will sort things out (and gimmie an excuse to learn a proper OS!)
Wish me luck i can see another "steep learning curve" on the horizon!
    Cheers
    Mike

  • PIXMA Pro-100 and Windows 8.1 Help Please....

    Hello,
I will try to be concise
Spent all day on the phone for this without the same answer twice *sigh*.
I have been told and I have read over and over that YES, the Pro-100 WILL absolutely work with Windows 8.1.
Then...I find out that it's possible that it will NOT work unless I have 8.1 Pro Pack.
    Is this true?
IOW...Is there anyone using the PIXMA Pro-100 with Windows 8.1 *without *Pro Pack just fine?
I ordered the printer yesterday before being told about this, and need to know if I have to cancel my order before it ships.
Thank you very much for any and all help.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Sherri,
I have been using the Pro-100 along with three of the printers it has replaced, the 9000, 9500 and 9500 II since Win 8.1 came out.  They all work and work well with WIndoze 8 or 8.1.  I use Photoshop and Lightroom so the OS really doesn't matter.  If you do not have either of these, I will suggest you check into Photoshop Elements as an option.
With one of these mentioned programs you do not need any thing additional.  Including the Canon software that comes with the Pro-100.  But a couple of Canon's software is pretty good like the printing on a DVD.  But PS, or PSE, is where it at for photos that are possibile by the Pro-100.

  • Can't mount my external SATA drives - help please

I have two SATA II drives taken from my now, knackered, PC and I want to mount them from my Macbook Pro. I have a the Sonnet Tempo eSATA card which has two sockets and I have connected that to Sharkoon SATA Quickport Duo which allows me to physically connect to the two drives. I don't need write access, just read access. However, when MacOS goes to mount the drives it tells me "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and presents me with three options "Initialize...", "Ignore" and "Eject".
When the drives were installed in the PC they were configured for RAID 0. I have a suspicion that this is what's causing the problem. Can someone please help me with getting these mounted? Do I need some special software? Am I missing something?
    Thanks all

Seems like I'm on my own with this one then.

  • I have an a MacBookPro and my key pad is not working properly.  When I type 3 it puts in 3§.  It works fine with an external keyboard. Help Please

    Hi,
My Keybord on my MacBook Pro is doing the strangest things.  If I type a 3 it puts 3§ if I type a 2 it puts a 2` if I type a 4 it puts a 4] and so on.  It works fine when I add en external keyboard.
    Any Idea's?
    Thank you in advance.

Strange, try tapping your option key a few times...
Holding down the option key generates this set of symbols on the number keys: `¡™£¢∞§¶•ªº–≠
Does your computer do the same? (hold option and just tap each key on the number row progressively)
But number plus symbol is a strange sight to see. I don't have an answer for that.

  • MacBook pro stuck on white loading screen, help please.

Hi guys, yesterday I was playing on my MacBook pro and all of a sudden the screen went black and it turned off. Once trying to turn my laptop back on it was just stuck on the white loading screen with the appe logo and loading wheel. I've been surfing around the forum and tried some things that others have said worked for them but none seems to work for me, so I decided to create a question so I can get more personal help. I don't have any installation CDs for the MacBook, either which I know makes things more difficult but hopefully ill be able to solve this some other way. Please help if you can!

I can't help the other person, it's a old post and it sounds like they had a hardware issue anyway, which we can't fix here.
If you can start a new discussion in the MacBook forum and describe your problem in detail, perhaps we can assist.

  • Weird problem involving my external hard drive - help please!

I recently got a formac mini 120 gb firewire hard drive, which had been working fine with my g4 quicksliver.
i then went to a friends (g5 machine) with my drive and he put some data on it - bought it back to mine and managed to re connect the drive and take the data - no problem - very happy.
I recently gave my drive to another friend using a g5 and when it came back, nothing - i don't get the drive symbol appearing. turned the comp on and off many times and tried re-connecting etc still no drive appearing.
Then i took the drive to my friend with a mac lap top power book. connected there - working fine. Baffling. was happy that my data can still be accessed.
I know it's not the firewire cable because i can get power to the drive - i can see the red light at the fron on.
Can anyone help with this weird problem?
    Thanks

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours might be the 10.4.10 Combo update. I have no idea since you did not fill out your specs. fully when you signed in to this site. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system. This link is for PPC Macs not Intel Macs.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

Basically to keep this simple I want wireless from the G4 to the Macbook Pro and vice versa and being able to access my Cable Modem Wireless to my Macbook Pro...
Please give me the specifics of how to create this please and I will be greatly appreciative to you.....
I want the fastest and the most reliable that is the most important...
Ex: Airport, Wireless Router Software: Apple Remote Desktop 3.0 ?

  • Final Cut PRo and Canon 5d Mark II Help Please

Hey guys working with HD video I shot with the Canon 5D Mark II. In playback on the time line the video appears jumpy and sticks at transition point between two clips. However when I output to a movie everything is fine. Just annoying in the editing process. Thanks

    Ray:
That cam I believe shoot h.264 video. That is a delivery format, not an editing format.
It needs to be converted to an HD editing format.
Try pro res or pro res HQ. Open the clips in the QT Pro player and export, or use Compressor.

  • Final Cut Pro Basics.... Help Please?

First off I don't have Express.
Second, I have this progarm because my dad had gotten the software as a christmas gift but never used it so he gave it to me.
I have been using iMovie HD and have reached it's max in the options I can use. I want to expand to Final Cut Pro but I have little to no understanding of the UI. Is there any easy video tutorials you guys know of? Or some book I could buy?

  • New 2.66Ghz 12-core Mac Pro - Two LaCie 730 Monitor Problems - Help Please

    Hello:
I just got a new 12-core machine with the 5870 video card to power two LaCie 730 (30" LCD) monitors which give 125% of Adobe 1998. I do a lot of photo editing and want to use the 2560x1600 resolution on the 730. The monitor connected to the DVI port works and looks great. The other monitor, connected to a Mini-Display port only gives me 1280x800, which looks pretty crappy on 30".
Is there a solution to my problem? I thought the 5870 would power two displays like this.
Any help greatly appreciated as I am a photographer and not a computer expert.
    Cheers,
    Mike

be sure the USB dongle is plugged in
The adapter is an active adapter and needs power from USB to work
Unfortunately, we are once again having the future forced down our throats whether we are ready or not.
The legacy DVI component of DP is of the single link variety, hence the 1280x800. Best it will do is 1920x1200 when you use a passive adapter. It is passing through a signal generated on the card. The spec only allows for single link support via this pass through.
DO PC users have same issue? Yes and no. I got my first 5870 when they were hot new thing, nearly a year ago. I was eager to try Eyefinity. Through a painful learning process I discovered that 5870 could generate 2 DVI signals. DVI clock signal comes from card, DP clock is from display. The 3rd signal HAD to be a genuine DP signal. If you look in the forum posts of nearly a year ago you will see quite a bit of whining as PC folk realized that they needed an active adapter to run 3 @ DVI displays. I was one of first to reason that Apple's DUal Link adapter would do this. Worked great, I played various PC games in wrap around beauty with help of Apple's MDP to Dual Link adapter.
Fast forward to today. Since Apple has turned one of the PC card's DVI ports into an MDP port, to run 2 DVIs of greater than 1920x1200 res is going to need one of these adapters. To run 3 is going to require 2. So, easier to buy a 27" MDP display, it won't need an adapter.
