Flex Programmers in Seattle
I am looking for any Flex programmers in the Seattle area to
get together and bounce ideas off of and such. I would love to use
the Seattle flex users group site but there isn't one single piece
of contact info on the WHOLE thing.
Hi Deepa,
You confirmed my suspects. I will study the complementary topics in "Flex 3 in a Week" video tutorial series.
Thanks a lot,

Need Flex 2.01 Development at good rates ...
My Fellow American Programmers,
My apologizes to hard working American Flex developers who
want work ... but I've created messages on this forum looking for
help on a massive project since November of 2006 and I haven't
received but one or two credible offers of help, yet they didn't
work out because I need on-site programmers ...
So, now I am requesting that any off-shore Flex development
teams that have counterparts here in the U.S. contact me. I need
one or two developers, depending on budgetary constraints on-site
in Lawndale, CA 90260.
I need intermediate level Flex 2.01 development personnel. I
can direct them as long as they are over the basics and
self-starters.
No Beginners.
We will be moving to 3.0 and JBoss 5.0 when those releases
are most stable.

Thank You.I want to apologize for soliciting the talents of Flex
programmers in these hallowed halls.
Would someone please direct me to more appropriate places
where I might find developers for Flex 2.01 that are competent and
available.

I'm a fairly new Flex 2 developer, and I've recently read a
number of blog posts and such that mention Flash security
vulnerabilities.
I know a Flex 2 application can be decompiled, and that
basically means little or no Flex 2 client code is secure. Other
than the obvious choices of not including passwords and secure
information within your code, how else might this fact expose the
security of my application?
Are there other not-so-obvious security gotchas that every
Flex 2 developer should know about? Some of the Flash Player
Security Advisories are confusing. Do I need to force my users to
download a certain minimum version of Flash to be secure?
The application I'm building will be on the internet, and
must be very secure. Is Flex not the right choice for an Internet
application with tight security requirements?
Thanks,

Hi,
Can anyone help and point in the right direction. I would like to plot a line chart in 3D. I have x,y and z data points that would be imported with XML.
My Flex programmers say they can't do it, but I am sure that Flex can allow a 3D line chart. Ideally I'd like the line to be enclosed in a 3D-type cube such that the cube would have the gridlines on them. It would be good if the chart could rotate too.
Any source code, or links to source code, or any feedback greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Non-Programmer.If you wanted a free set of stuff, at the cost of doing some development inhouse, then the Papervision set of components at
http://code.google.com/p/papervision3d/
would help. You can certainly set up lines, cubes etc with this.

Junior / Intermediate Software Developer - Calgary, Alberta Region Only
We are currently hiring software developers and looking especially for LabVIEW experienced developers. The positive is for a full time software developer who can apply existing LabVIEW skills or is keenly interested to develop in LabVIEW by applying other programming language experience. Please, candidates must be local for interview and the position, no remote options for this role.
You can read the full job description for this position and details about how to apply at our site here:
http://www.advmeas.com/about/career/It is quite a career change, but I think that is expected that most people will go through a couple of them in their careers. Any programming experience will help you greatly.
To answer your specific questions, at least the ones I am knowledgeable about..
1 & 2. I think the difference between a junior and intermediate and guru is mainly length of time working in the industry developing these type of applications. Flex is still new for the most part. You should be familiar with ActionScript3. You should be familiar with XML and other web standards. A lot of the Flex programmers I know deal with all aspects of the development including the database, middleware (CF, .NET, Java, Ruby, etc..), so familiarity with that will help you. my impulse is to tell you to learn C# and .NET given your C expeience, however I honestly don't know how much C / Assembler experience will apply to C#. Knowing about relational databases won't hurt you either. There are jobs where you just do Flex and someone else builds the services / database for you, but knowing the backend piece will help you.
3. Not at all! Most people doing Flex have very little Flash experience. They come from web developer backgrounds dealing with middleware and database programming, not from a Flash / design backgrond.
4. Adobe has formal courses. There is also the learn flex in a week videos. If you like podcasts, listen to The Flex Show which has both audio interviews and screencasts.
5.Working on Open source projects will help you more than hurt you. You'll get contacts, and experience. It is easier to get the job if you can offer samples of your work.
6-7. I can't help withi nterview or salary questions, sorry. I think that is pretty company specific and region plays into it too.
8. There is a huge demand for Flex Developers. It is a growing technology. I expect the demand to keep up for a while.
I hope some of this is useful. -
I want to brush up on my ActionScripting, and learn some
more, but I find it difficult to know what to focus on. As a
graphic designer I don't feel that it's really neccessary for me to
learn the more complicated AS3. But if AS3 eventually is going to
replace AS2, I definitely will skip right to AS3...
Which one should I focus on?
[edit] Sorry for double posting... adobe.com seem to have
some problems.turbotape,
> I want to brush up on my ActionScripting, and learn some
more,
> but I find it difficult to know what to focus on.
In my experience -- which may not match yours, granted --
the ideal is
to feel as comfortable as possible in as many versions of
ActionScript as
possible. Know AS3 for the new stuff and know AS2 (and even
AS1, sometimes)
for the older stuff, or for projects targetted at mobile
content.
> As a graphic designer I don't feel that it's really
neccessary for me
> to learn the more complicated AS3. But if AS3 eventually
is going
> to replace AS2, I definitely will skip right to AS3...
AS3 will eventually take over AS2, just like AS2 eventually
took over
AS1 (and just like AS1 eventually took over Flash 4-era
ActionScript, which
could feasibly, with a slight grin, be called AS0). So
there's the onward
march of progress, yes. But it's important to realize that
AS3 doesn't
encessarily equate to more complicated. True, advanced
projects are best
suited for AS3, and AS3 is what Flex programmers use. But AS3
is just as
suitable for good, old fashioned keyframe coding as any other
version of
ActionScript.
Check out this article by Colin Moock, which was very
encouraging to me
the first time I read it:
http://www.insideria.com/2008/01/actionscript-30-is-it-hard-or.html
> Which one should I focus on?
If you're not familiar with coding at all, you'll probably
find AS3
easier to learn from scratch. I proposed a few arguments
along these lines
in this article here (an excerpt of a book on migration from
AS2 to AS3):
http://www.communitymx.com/abstract.cfm?cid=16D76
If you've had a bit of intro to AS2, you might still want to
focus on
AS3 simply because it's newer, but your decision should
ultimately be
decided by the version of Flash Player you're aiming for. If
you're with an
agency that demands all content be accessible to Flash Player
6, 7, or 8,
then your only choices are AS1 or AS2 (in which case, aim for
AS2). If most
of your work ends up using Flash Player 9 or higher, then I
recommend AS3 as
your first step.

Flash CS3 vs. Flex Builder 2
Here's the $64,000 question: should we be developing in Flash
CS3 or should we shift over to Flex Builder 2? I maintain that AS
3.0 is a pain in the proverbial, but I've been researching and
finding as much help as possible online about it, and I've found
that by and large people are using Flex Builder 2 as the basis of
tutorials about AS 3.0. Does anyone have an official slant on this
question? Should we abandon Flash for Flex? Will it help? Will it
mitigate the difficulties non-programmers are experiencing with AS
3.0 - or as I call it simply ***? Would I be getting more responses
to my *** questions if I post them over in the *** forum under Flex
Builder?
Any thoughts on this matter would be most welcome, thank
you.Beatie3,

I don't know that I'd call it a luxury, really. Work is
work. ;) As
you might imagine, though, Flex Builder 2 provides a number
of scripting
improvements over the Actions panel (there's really no
comparison; if you've
tried them both, the Actions panel barely feels useful) and
the Flex
framework offers significantly more UI Components. Ideally,
if the pocket
book allows it, using both applications is the killer setup.

When you say imported, you mean dynamically loaded (loaded
at runtime),
right? Otherwise, I'm confused. The Flash IDE itself allows
you to
determine the quality of imported JPGs. In ActionScript 3.0
... are you
talking about the Stage.quality property?

Not sure what might be tripping you up, actually. The
coordinate grid
is the same. Horizontally, higher numbers move toward the
right;
vertically, higher numbers move toward the bottom. That's the
same as it's
been.
> I just want a blue hair line with a nice green dot at

Having heard what you're after, I just started a quick
experiment from
scratch. Here's my version, below. Note: I've made no effort
to optimize
my code. This is just a first draft to achieve a blue line
segment with
green dots on each end that becomes a black line segment when
the mouse
lifts.
var startX:Number;
var startY:Number;
var canvas:Sprite = new Sprite();
addChild(canvas);
canvas.stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,
mouseDownHandler);
canvas.stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP,
mouseUpHandler);
function mouseDownHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
startX = mouseX;
startY = mouseY;
var dot:Sprite = new Sprite();
dot.name = "dotStart";
dot.graphics.beginFill(0x00FF00);
dot.graphics.drawCircle(mouseX, mouseY, 5);
dot.graphics.endFill();
canvas.addChild(dot);
dot = new Sprite();
dot.name = "dotEnd";
dot.graphics.beginFill(0x00FF00);
dot.graphics.drawCircle(0, 0, 5);
dot.graphics.endFill();
canvas.addChild(dot);
canvas.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,
enterFrameHandler);
function enterFrameHandler(evt:Event):void {
var dot:DisplayObject = canvas.getChildByName("dotEnd");
dot.x = mouseX;
dot.y = mouseY;
canvas.graphics.clear();
canvas.graphics.lineStyle(1, 0x0000FF);
canvas.graphics.moveTo(startX, startY);
canvas.graphics.lineTo(mouseX, mouseY);
function mouseUpHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
canvas.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,
enterFrameHandler);
canvas.removeChild(canvas.getChildByName("dotStart"));
canvas.removeChild(canvas.getChildByName("dotEnd"));
canvas.graphics.clear();
canvas.graphics.lineStyle(2, 0x000000);
canvas.graphics.moveTo(startX, startY);
canvas.graphics.lineTo(mouseX, mouseY);
There's a lot of repeated code there, and this isn't how I'd
leave the
above in an actual project, but by spilling out a rough cut
like this, I'm
hoping it gives you something to work with -- showing the
mechanics of how
this might be done.

Best resources for a new Flash/Flex game developer?
I'm currently a VB.NET/C# software developer and I'm looking
to try my hand at making some games using Flash or Flex. It seems
like Flex is the better option for programmers so I'll most likely
go down that road... (using FlashDevelop?)
What are some good tutorials or web sites for developing
games? (preferrably in Flex but Flash is good too)
What are some other good resources/forums? (eg. besides here

Are Flash Builder 4 and Flex 4 the same ?
Hi Everyone,
1. Are Flash Builder 4 and Flex 4 the same ?
2. Are Flash Builder 4 and Flash CS4 the same ?
Thanks,

1. Are Flash Builder 4 and Flex 4 the same ?
Yes, flash builder 4 was the name given to what is effectively flex 4.
This answer is, essentially wrong.
Flex 4 is a Software Development Kit (SDK) that includes a compiler, a user interface framework, and a few other items.
Flash Builder 4 is an IDE that can be used to develop Flex applications. Flash Builder 4 can also be used to code ActionScript w/o any dependencies to the Flex Framework.
Grizzzzzzzzzz wrote: 2. Are Flash Builder 4 and Flash CS4 the same ?
No, Creative suite 4 is a software library consisting of many different programs
This answer is much more correct; but for additional clarification:
Flash Builder 4 is an IDE that programmers can use to develop applications for the Flash Platform.
Flash Professional CS4 is an IDE that Designers can use to create time-line based animations for the Flash Platform.
One is geared for designers; and another for programmers. In theory they can be used to reach the same end point although I wouldn't want to do application programming in Flash Professional; nor would I Want to do design stuff in Flash Builder. -
Layer id to component id in Flex
For designers is imperative to give individual names to layers, the thing is that these "names" in Flex continue as layer ids instead of being used as component ids (which would cut ALOT of work!!!). Please! Change this!!!!!
Well it would help save time in the development stage just by allready exporting components ids that can be used by Flex, instead of having to create from scratch the ids. I found this helpfull because i'm working with a developer and he noticed that, as every good designer, my layers have a logical naming that he could use as components ids IF Flex could use the layer's id as a component id (since the component in FC ocuppies a layer that I name specificly. If Flex could use the "search and change key words" to search for the layer's ids and automatacly change them to component's ids it wouldn't matter, but since Flex doesn't do that, and since every great FC project has to pass through Flex....
The point is that instead of having the both of us entering ids it would only be necessary for me to do it.
Or at least have a Flex transition window where i could, in FC, atribute the id i want to the component.
If i've not made myself clear i'm not talking about a generic component as you can se in the library. What i'm talking about is, for example, if I had 3 main buttons, all from the same component, in different layers (of corse), and if i named those 3 layers as "home_bt", "contacts_bt" and "faq_bt", when the project got imported to Flex, Flex would recognize the layer's ids as being each duplicate component's id in Flex....
I hope you understood me. My guess is that you guys are trying to make FC as a softer flash for non-flash users/ designers, and Flex as the developers tool, separating the too worlds that today are a bit mixed, demanding programing skills for designers and designing skills for programmers....my guess is that this is a pertinent issue in the separation of these two worlds....and me, as a designer, can help in the developing stage better and faster -
Im confused about Flex and Flash?
flex uses Actionscript to develop internet application.
Flash also uses Actionscript to do that. now why i should use
Flex if both using the same language.
is it because Flex has more class libraries ?
when a company or someone asks me why we need to use Flex
instead of Flash , what is the answer for that ?
thanksIMHO I would say:
Flex is programmers approach to develop apps while
Flash is designers approach .
I cant stand programing and dealing with timeline at the
same time so for me Flex is the way to go. -
so i am traditionally a Flash designer / developer... i know, i know that strikes fear into programmers all over! you are probably thinking, i nest code everywhere and always have and there is no hope. definitely not the case.
i have always been an interface / experience first then comes the business logic second, make it all mess third. i recently move from AS2 to AS3 development and like what AS3 has to offer and after a few short months and can imagine going back to the old style code!
so to the point....
i decided i love the Flex IDE with code hinting organization and all of the "programmer" perks that come along with that environment. writing class files is a breeze and much more intuitive. everything in the product is database driven... i also love the Flex components because it appears to do some work for me with binding, resize of content, keeping assets nice and neat. i am comfortable continuing to develop in Flash if need be, but is it time to move to Flex in everyones opinion?
here is a sample of the product we have created:
http://www.mapyourshow.com/shows/index.cfm?show_id=NPE09
flash is really just a glorified library of sorts with all language content, configurations, etc are DB driven so that we can make it as flexible as possible. the bis downer is that it is written in AS2 logic and i have to do alot of clean-up for search list, the drawing of data, resizing content and relative positioning, video, panel nav, on and on! i also used tween classes, so i don't even use the timeline anymore. i think that Flex might fit in well here.
my BIGGEST concerns:
- Flex seems "heavy and clunky", so performance wise it just doesn't seem as fluid and Flash displays do.
- most flex app look the same even those built with flex 3, i cannot find and good sample that have a great presentation to them
any suggestions for good samples of Flex and Design (as in a unique presentation and nice interface)? should i move on to develop this application in Flex?

scalenine.com you can find great customization there. Also defgrafa

I am looking for a good UML plug-in for Flex Builder that is
geared more toward the Flex / Actionscript architecture as apposed
to Java, C#, C++, etc... Does anybody currently use or know of a
good plug-in for this? I realized that I cross-posted, but this
forum see twice as much posting as the Flex Builder forum and this
does related to the language as much as the software. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.Was also spotting for such an aid and will try out ea. So far
thx. Poseidon from gentleware which is based on agos looked quite
well but is strong on the jsside and they have a inacceptable try
out offer.
It would be nice to have an adobe tool for modeling which
would include also links to the design and content areas of complex
webbased apps. In that way one could include customers, designers,
programmers, and contenters in a model which would help in many of
my projects. -
I have just started to explore the capabilites of Flex for
possible implementation within my organization, and I have a few
questions, answers to which I couldn't find on adobe's site. I'm
hoping the Flex community can help.
Firstly, can Flex easily integrate with exisiting J2EE-Web
applications? For example, if I have an EJB-based application, can
I use the existing EJBs and swap out the JSP-based front-end with
Flex? If so, how easy is it to do this What kind of a learning
curve are we looking at? If someone can explain how exactly this is
done....I'd greatly appreciate it.
Secondly, It seems the Flex framework itself is free....only
the IDE costs money. Is my understanding correct?
Third, What really is Flex Data Services? And what does it
do?
We have a bunch of J2EE-based applications in our
organization, and the most time consuming part is always developing
the front-end. Can Flex solve this problem without jeoparadizing
our J2EE investment?
I would really appreciate all the feedback!aamya
Firstly: "Easily" is a relative term, so I"ll stay away from
that one. The short answer is "yes", you can access java objects
from Flex. I can't really tell you the learning curve, because I
don't know you or your skills, however I've been told that Java
programmers will be quite at home with ActionScript.
Second: You are correct.
Third: FDS essentially allows you to connect your Flex app
with "live" back end data. For example, if a helpdesk ticket status
changes because User A has closed it, User B's interface will
automatically refresh.
Flex is a pesentation layer solution, so the idea is to keep
your back end intact - I can't guarantee that NO changes to your
back end systems will be needed though, but I'd guess that you'd be
90% good to go. Get started by downloading a 30-day trial, and go
through the articles posted on Adobe.com and recently at CFDJ (
http://cfdj.sys-con.com/).
My user group site also has a list of resources:
