Flex Success Stories

Hi there.
I have heard a lot of developers sing the praises of how
wonderful Flex is,
and as a developer myself, it's certainly an improvement over
using
Flash.exe to author Flash movies, for certain applications.
However what I am struggling to find is "real world"
production scenarios
where it's ("it" being "Flex" and the whole "RIA" concept)
actually proven
to be of much use.
Situations I'm investigating:
1) Companies that have had an existing HTML-based web
presence which
decided to jump to a Flex-driven RIA solution, and
experienced an up-turn
in business.
2) Companies which did NOT have an existing HTML-based web
presence, and
decided to go for a Flex / Flash UI as opposed to an HTML
one, the
rationale for doing so, and their resultant findings (harder
to quantify
the comparitive benefits in this case, I realise).
We're finding Flex to be be difficult to justify as a
technology. I don't
disagree that it's interesting and it *should* be a (cliche
alert) "killer
app", but I don't actually see it in the real world.
We have had a relationship with Macromedia (not sure how this
translates to
Adobe), and had asked them, but they never actually came up
with anything
(which is worrying). There seems to be a lot of claims of how
great all
this RIA is, but not a lot of tangible evidence that it's
great enough for
anyone with a cheque book to actually care.
So here I am asking the community. Does anyone have any
analysis or case
studies of Flex success stories?
I am NOT trying to knock Flex / Flash at all. On the
contrary, I am trying
to gather ammnunition as to how to justify using it to
potential clients.
*I* think it's a cool product.
Cheers.
Adam

My "increase sales from x to y" was an example, and perhaps
the most
easy to measure. How do you measure that your recruiters ARE
more
efficient?
They can spend more time scheduling more drives since they
have much
less paperwork to do for each mobile drive and that we are
meeting our
blood collection goals more frequently. This is the
improvement we saw
when we implemented an CF/HTML application three years ago.
I am in the process of rebuilding this application into a
CF/FLEX
solution, so we have obviously not seen any improvement here
yet, they
can't use it until I finish. But for the pieces I have shown
them they
are very excited. I would say there are going to be two
savings here.
I am implementing a much slicker, very desktop like UI much
easier and
quicker then if I had tried to do the same in a
HTML|DHTML|AJAX
techniques. So there is saving in my time. I am building new
features
that will allow the recruiters to create new drives, which is
something
that is still a very paper intensive process that does not
exist in the
current application. This will make it a bit harder to
measure since
there will not be an HTML version of this functionality to
compare
against. But since I can do at least some of this with Flex
wizards, my
development time is defiantly shorter.
But overall, FLEX is allowing me to delver features that have
long been
requested, but where difficult and time consuming to develop
with older
technologies.

  • Photo Book Success Stories

i often read about the frustration folks have been having in ordering books. i was extremely apprehensive about ordering my own recently, based on the comments and feedback i've been reading. i did research on a few alternatives, but they all seemed to be just about even, and in some cases, the iPhoto process was the ideal choice.
anyhow, i sent in an order for a 36-page hardcover book. i changed the iPhoto PDF dpi preference, as recommended, to 300 dpi using PREF SETTER.
i also traced the PDF file down on my harddrive and previewed it before placing the order. everything looked fine.
the only thing i should add, is that the images in my book were all 7" x 7" RGB TIFF files. they were digital paintings done using only Photoshop and no photographic images. just Brush Tool artwork.
one thing I did, though, was to reformat the 7 x 7 size to fit the actual page size of the hardcover iPhoto book, which was 2592 x 1944.
i sent in the order with Express delivery. it arrived here in just about 2-3 days - a day faster than expected.
the book looks sensational. i was very skeptical, as i now had to order 3 more.
i went through the order process again, obviously much quicker this time.
the three books arrived even faster this time and looked equally as good as the first. the only noticable characteristics of the print quality were very, very small dot gains - only visible if you looked really closely.
kudos to Apple for supporting this process and offering this service with the application. this is something i've wanted to do for years but never had the know-how.
i'd love to hear about anybody else's success stories and what tricks they used to get the job done.

I'm just about to order my first book (the large size) for a gift and very happy to read the success stories. Before I go ahead with the order, I have some questions:
I have compiled the book and it's 'ready to go' but I am concerned if the resolution will be good enough. Can I change the dpi setting to 300 at this point or will I lose all the work that I've done?
Also, there's one caption box that's displaying the ! error symbol but there's no text in that box and I don't want to put text in it. Is this a bug and should I just ignore it?
And finally, is there any way to spell check before submitting the order?

  • Im getting a folder with a "!" any success stories??

I have recieved both an unhappy icon and a this folder, what does it mean as apple give no direct answer. Alsohow do you phone up because they say you have to pay?? How do you organise to send back??

Yes, I believe that there are many success stories, included mine. I have managed to fix up few different iPods from my friends and family members with the same problem. Please read the following
Suggestions when you run into a problem of a Sad iPod icon or a folder icon with exclamation point with your iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Try to connect on a different computer i.e. a PC formatted iPod connect with a Mac computer or Mac formatted iPod with a Window base PC.
    8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
    9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.

  • Any success stories? PS & Ai CS4 and Snow Leopard

I ran out of memory too many times on my G-5 iMac with 2.5 GIG of ram trying to run PS & Ai at the same time.
So I bought a Mac Pro tower (Quad Core- 2.66 w/ 10 GIG ram). I purchased this reconditioned (at the advice of Apple Care) so that I could downgrade the system from Snow Leopard to Leopard. It would have worked fine, but the folks in the reconditioning department decided to ship me a new machine instead of a reconditioned one. So now I CAN NOT down grade the system.
I want a system that works! I have lost too much time with all these PS crashes- so I thought it would be safe to go with Leopard + CS4 + tons of ram. Well that is not going to work. Apple is happy to take the computer back- but I have bought the ram & monitor from a third party retailer. (I am stuck with that.)
I would love to keep this tower if I can hear from some of you wonderful power users that now (after many months of problems) you have found Snow Leopard & CS 4 willing to play happily together.
And yes, I thought about CS 5- but from the posts in this forum- it sounds even worse that what I am going through right now. (Having to restart my computer after Photoshop crashes because I have been going back and forth between PS & Ai and one or the other refuses to give make my memory!)
    Anybody have any success stories?

    JV:
I would be lost without my Alien Skin filters!
I was working in a perfect world: new machine, clean install of 10.6.4
Then I loaded PS CS 4 & AI CS 4- then the filters.
The versions I have were for Leopard & Snow Leopard (downloaded 11/09).
I only add the fonts I need & have been careful that they are full licensed fonts from reprutable foundries.
I am not taking any chances with this machine.
I use my old G-5 iMac running 10.4.11 for everything else. I am a Freehand user so my plan all along was to keep that computer for that.
But I also keep all Microsoft & web surfing on that machine too.
There is a good article from Alien Skin regarding installation in Snow Leopard:

    Good luck!

I run my own small "server" at home -- it has Postfix/DoveCot mail server on it and a "hardened" /etc/sshd_config. Upgraded from 10.5.5 client to 10.5.7 client on it today.
10.5.7's /etc/postfix/main.cf added a line at the bottom of that file that says inet_interfaces = localhost. Actually, I think they added that with 10.5.6. I changed it to read #inet_interfaces = localhost and the mail server started working again.
I don't have scponly but I do have sshd enabled. 10.5.7 didn't touch my /etc/sshd_config.

  • APEX - Case Studies/Success Stories/Customer References

    Hi everybody,
Recently, a customer (a bank in Europe) asked me to give him a list of APEX case studies, success stories and customer references ...

  • OT: I need success stories! Quickly! HELP!! :-)

    HELP!
Our company is hoping to make a major decision on whether to completely rewrite our system on J2EE. We need to convince our management and marketing teams of the need for this. Do you have any articles and success stories to help us sell your technology? Specifically I'm looking for:
    - J2EE projects
    - Large systems (we serve 300 million hits/day) that need to be both fast and stable
    - Project timelines (how long? how many developers?)
    - preferably Linux-based
    - preferably open-source (e.g. JBoss) although commercial app servers will be fine
This would be GREAT!!! I'm DESPERATE!
    Dave Lowndes

I would recommend the Apache website (http://www.apache.org/). If your not already familiar with them they provide phenomenal open-source software. The Apache HTTP server and Tomcat servlet container are usually more than sufficient for building large systems, you may not even require an EJB server. You can also tie in the Struts MVC framework to make your life easier (see under the Jakarta project on the Apache site).
In terms of a free database (assuming you need one) then you could also use MySql (http://www.mysql.org), as with the Apache software it's open-source and available on Linux.
    Best of luck,
    Ronny.

  • JDeveloper success stories

Are there any success stories about JDeveloper?
Especially for JClient+BC4J applications with Oracle database and with or without Oracle9i AS.
I quote from the foreword of the Oracle9i JDeveloper Handbook:
    "JDeveloper 1.0 - useless. JDeveloper 2.0 - useless. JDeveloper 3.0 - now that's interesting!"
And what is with the current version? Is it more than interesting?
I track this forum since some weeks and did a lot of tests with JDeveloper.
I read about many problems and the hope, that all will go better with version 9.0.4 or 9.0.5.
    But what is now?
    Are there real success stories?
    Bye
    Holger

    Hi,
Jdev is a great tool, but it is extremely dificult to get help when you need.
We purchased the entire jdev suit, 9iAS and 9iDB, and I could hardly get any help. I tried here in the forum and through metalink, and often failed to get satisfactory help.
The problem here is that the jdev forks are too busy or for whatever reasons, they only answer questions selectively.
The problem with the Metalink is that you can never reach someone who is jdev or bc4j expert. It takes a long time and many message exchanges to get answers like "we could not reproduce your problem", "we could not find your problem in our bug DB", etc.

  • Overclocking 2.6 P4 ( fsb800 ) success stories plz?

    Hi guys!
I recently overclocked my brother's P4 2.6C from 2.6 to 3.0 without a problem...  I am receiving mine tonight, same CPU, Corsair Memory ( 2x256 ) timings 2-3-2-6 1T. Have you guys any idea on what best setting to get the max MHZ and keep stability? I'm aiming for 3.0 - 3.1.
    Spread Spectrum ON/OFF?
    AGP/PCI kept at 66/33 ?
Memory timings, keep it at SPD, or set it manually? ( I found that even thou the specs of corsair memory is 2-3-2-6, the SPD setting will show greyed specs saying something like 2.5-3-3-8, is it the Standard, or the actual timings it'll use? )
Plz tell me about your success stories and your tricks to achieve the highest stable speeds ( considering everything depends on cooling and specific material limitations ). Thanks!

Ok, Firstly, please create a signature with ALL you system specs (mobo in marketing form with BIOS version- i.e. 865PE Neo2-LS BIOS 1.8 or 875P-FIS2R BIOS 1.9 etc), including power supply with +3.3, +5, and +12V rail current ratings.
This will allow for far more detailed and accurate advice.
I think from the info you've given you have ordered Corsair TwinX512-3200LL(PT).
First off, I'd check on here and at Corsair forum for compatibility issues. There has been a lot of problems previously between certain MSI boards and the 3200LL modules. There are workarounds and I think you'll find a lot of information on the best memory timings for your specific mobo / memory combo.
You are targetting a 230 to 240 FSB and your memory (only rated at 400 MHz) is likely to be a big factor in achieving this. 3 to 3.1 GHz should be achievable with a 2.6GHz, but again a search of this forum will show a number of users experiencing premature topping out of this particular processor. (don't know why, but it just doesn't seem to overclock as well as some others!)
In answer to your specific questions:-
    IMHO,
    Spread Spectrum: OFF
    Adjust AGP/PCI Clock(Mhz): 66.66/33.33
Memory timings: as above - very specific to exact mobo / memory combination - please search forum for detailed advice.
In terms of achieving the highest stable speeds, I always test the processors top end, by relaxing all the memory timings, turning off DOT and MAT, set the Memory Frequency to 266 MHz (3:2 FSB:memory ratio) and seeing how far you can raise the FSB. Depending on the result of this determines whether you can go to 333 MHz (5:4) or 400 MHz (1:1) Memory frequencies.
    As a guide:-
    Frequency/Voltage Control
    Dynamic Overclocking: Disabled
    Performance Mode: Slow
    CPU Ratio Selection: Locked
    DRAM Frequency: 266Mhz
    Spread Spectrum: Disabled
Adjust CPU Bus Clock (Mhz): 200
    DDR Clock(Mhz): 266 (Greyed out)
    Adjust AGP/PCI Clock(Mhz): 66.66/33.33
    CPU Vcore Adjust: No
     CPU Vcore: 1.5250V (Greyed Out)
    DDR Power Voltage: 2.70V
    AGP Power Voltage: 1.55V
If you had to change Performance Mode to Slow, you will have to Save and Exit and then re-enter BIOS for all the following options to be available. If it was already Slow move straight to
    Advanced Chipset Features
    DRAM Timing Setting
Configure DRAM Timing by SPD: Disabled
    CAS Latency: 3 Clocks
    RAS Precharge: 4 Clocks
RAS to CAS Delay: 4 Clocks
    Precharge Delay: 8 Clocks
    Burst Length: 4 Clocks
    Integrity Mode: Disabled
Make sure DDR power voltage is at least 2.65V, and where necessary take advantage of the fact that Corsair Warranties all their modules to 2.8V.
ANY OVERCLOCKING CARRIES A RISK OF COMPONENT DAMAGE OR FAILURE.
IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE IT – DON’T DO IT!!!
Hope this helps and Good Luck.

user10233638, did you install a 64 bit Oracle client or a 32 bit Oracle client? Your subject line says instant client which I would think you are using the EZconnect feature. To the best of my knowledge, which I admint is limited in regards to the instant client, I thought that the EZ connection like a java thin client connection supplied all the Oracle target information so not tnsnames.ora file was required.
I found a EQ connection example in the following while researching your issue:
ORA-12154 When Using Long SQLNET Alias in DBQ Property of ODBC Connection String or TNS Service Name of DSN [ID 1340407.1]
Is there any reason you are not using a regular Oracle client or an ODAC client installation? The ODAC client installation does not come with the network configuration tools but I have copied a tnsnames.ora file into the appropriate directory my customer wanted installed so they could use the MS Visual Studio support provided by ODAC. We are using that client to support connections to Oracle.
As far as I know Oracle does not care if you point to a network hosted tnsnames.ora file via the TNS_ADMIN environment variable. So long as the sqlnet software can open and read the tnsnames.ora file I am pretty sure Oracle does not care. We have been using a network hosted tnsnames.ora file to support desktop clients for over a decade and a half though we do not use this option from servers. I am pretty sure it was Oracle support that suggested using a commont client tnsnames.ora file to us to begin with.

  • Video Card Success Stories?

    Hi All,
I'm having problems getting my ATI HD Radeon 4350 card to play nice with Molehill on Ubuntu 10.10.  Does anyone have any success stories (with any Graphics Card / OS combination)?
Maybe we can use this thread to give those of us who are working on projects some insight into video cards we may want to upgrade to.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hey folks,
Previously, I shared my experiences concerning molehill examples and how some examples would work and others would crash before anything was rendered. I'm now convinced that the molehill examples that did work on my machine probably had the Context3D property enableErrorChecking set to true. I've examined source code for the examples I've been playing around with and sure enough, examples that crashed before now worked well when I set enableErrorChecking to true.  Conversely, molehill examples and libraries that are currently working well on my machine have the enableErrorChecking property set to true; setting the property to false makes these examples crash. Here is what the pre-release documentation has to say about this property:
    enableErrorChecking:Boolean
If true, calls to clear(), and drawTriangles() are synchronous and  can throw errors. This reduces performance. In the default case, this  member is false.            When error checking is disabled, no attempt is made to check the  success of graphics rendering, eliminating the need to associate any  resulting error condition            with a particular graphics request.  Graphics processing is  simplified and the graphics pipeline is not unnecessarily stalled.
I really wanted to share this bit of information with other linux users. After reading some comments here on this forum and other comments from linux users at mcfunkypants blog I'm convinced that some of us linux users have to set enableErrorChecking to true to get our code working without crashing.
