Flicker and 10.5

With all of the posts regarding flickering, has anyone completely zeroed the hard drive right out of the box and then downloaded 10.6 using the enclosed disc?
Or, instead of using OS 10.6, has anyone or is it possible to download OS 10.5 to the zeroed i5/i7? Especially with 10.5 as the OS, it would show whether the problem is hardware or software.

The new iMacs do not support Leopard (10.5). The earliest supported Mac OS version for Macs (in general) is the one that comes pre-installed. For these new iMac, it is Snow Leopard (10.6).
I don't think +zeroing out data+ would make a difference (unless you were doing it because you suspected a hard drive issue), but erasing the factory installation by repartitioning an reformatting the drive, then installing the software off the included discs, is good idea.
My usual procedure for getting started with a new Mac is the following...
Power on the Mac and go through Setup Assistant with no migration. Use the Mac +as is+, after running Software Update to apply Apple's updates, for a while (try everything that I can think of trying). Once I am satisfied that it is working 100%, start up from the included Mac OS X installation disc. Run Disk Utility from Installer's menu bar. Select the internal drive in the sidebar, and use the Erase tab; if the drive (not volume) is selected in the sidebar, erasing repartitions and reformats the drive. Quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer. Run a standard system installation. Now, I start using the Mac +for real+.
This may take a few more hours, but I have more confidence that the hardware and software are working properly.

Yesterday while downloading an app on my 3GS, my iPhone froze, and I switched it off to reboot. Following that, every few minutes, the screen will flicker and the phone will restart. What's wrong? And how should I fix it?

I recieved my iPhone 3GS around Christmas. It has been working great, until yesterday. I was downloading an app and suddenly my messaging froze. I couldn't view incoming messages, and every chat I clicked on displayed the same frozen dialogue with only the contact names different. (The app was supposedly reliable, I read over the reviews.) I rebooted my phone in hopes of fixing this, and everything seemed fine for a couple of minutes. Then the screen slightly flickered, and my phone restarted itself. Now, after turning on again, it continues to flicker and crash every few minutes, whether I'm using it or not. Can anyone tell me what could be wrong and how I can fix it?

Restore the Firmware with iTunes.
If still problem and you have Warranty or AppleCare Coverage take to Apple for resolution.
If no coverage, the next step would be battery replacement.

Save as dialog box expanded to full screen, edge arrows flicker and will not pull the edges in.

This problem presented itself out of the blue. The Save As dialog box expanded to full screen, and although the arrows that appear when the mouse cursor is over the edge of a window are present, they flicker and do not grab the edge to pull it in. Every other window on the computer does not have an issue like this. Restarting Firefox or the computer does not eliminate the problem. I am hoping that there is a settings file somewhere that the numeric value for the dialog box size can be changed, since I do not want to completely reinstall the browser.
As a side note, if the browser has been running many downloads for a while, it will usually start failing to display information, and eventually will get to a point where the Save As box flickers for an instant and disappears and the entire browser becomes unresponsive for an hour or more. Downloads continue (including the one that it froze up on, albeit as a randomly named file in User...Temp), but it is not possible to restart the browser until the downloads complete (which in some cases can be several hours). Usually I revert to using IE11 until I can restart Firefox.
Perhaps one of my strongest dislikes of Firefox though is the issue with its resistance to copy and paste operations in the Save As dialog box. Most websites offer files with cryptic and even identical names for different files, so renaming files is a critical operation if one is to keep track of and later identify the files one has. A problem unique to Firefox, attempts to highlight and paste in a better file name usually are met with a refusal to paste, a stuck context menu that can take a minute of clicking to clear, repeated jumping to the end of the file name, and other similar issues. I have encountered this problem repeatedly on different computers and different operating systems, it is a problem I have only ever encountered in Firefox.

I kept forgetting and procrastinating about following your instructions, since I have internet access only for limited amounts of time and usually I am busy with important tasks when I am.
Out of the blue, the problem corrected itself (the Save As box started to open full screen, then shrunk down to a normal size and the edges can now be dragged to a custom size).
Even the copy and paste problem in the filenaming area seems to have been less troublesome lately even though there have been no updates to Firefox in a few weeks.
Even though I marked the solution as not helpful, the problem has in fact been resolved. I will save the solution instructions in case the issue returns.

How do I get rid of random screen flicker and black screen when using a late 2013 Mac Pro with a 4k Samsung 55" Display?

I have a new Mac Pro late 2013 and a 55" 4k Samsung display connected using an HDMI cable. For the most part the display is amazing, however, I get occasional screen flicker and black outs. Can anyone help? Could I possibly have a bad video card?

4K displays take more than half the bandwidth of a ThunderBolt Bus. So you may get better results if you are careful to place them on their own Bus. This article has the explanation of which port is using which Bus:

Icons flicker and external drives don't work

anyone having this issue? It just started today.
the icons on the Late 2009 iMac desktop will flicker and when i try to copy a folder to one of my extarnal Seagate HD's the icons flash and the transfer stops.

1) Make sure VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK is selected.
     Check, had already tried this but nothing shows no matter what I do.
2) Make sure the iMovie Projects folder and the iMovie Events folder on the external drive are at the top level of the drive. If they are within another folder, iMovie will not see them.
     Check, all 4 drives have these folders at the top level.
3) If you open iMovie within another user account, and everything works fine, then this is probably a corrupt preferences file. You can correct by trashing your preferences, as described here.

     Tried this, no difference I'm afraid. Also, all four accounts on this computer exhibit the same behavior. All drives and projects show in the Projects window but nothing shows in the Events window.   I even created a brand new account and it's doing the same thing.
One other little detailed I should have mentioned.   I had a hard drive "failure" just before this started but managed to coax all the information from the failing drive on to a new one before it failed completely (interface issue on the external case and not a problem with the hard drive itself, I am now using the drive in a dock as a backup drive).   I now realize it would have been preferable to copy the movies to the new drive within iMovie but at the time was just focused on trying to save the information so did it through the OS. As it was I had to resort to copying individual clips from the old drive to the new because copying more than a couple of Gig at a time would fail.
I'm starting to consider picking up a new internal drive and re-installing everything from scratch and then manually copying over the user data files to make sure nothing corrupt gets copied over ?

Try downloading another app - any app - pick a free app and download it. See if that helps reset the iPad.
If that doesn't work, then reboot the iPad. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

I have noticed that pngs flicker and appear as white boxes when scrolling down the page in Chrome 37.0.2062.120 m in windows only. Chrome on the mac is fine and this issue doesn't occur on the windows version of chrome canary. It would appear that the pngs are reloading when I scroll.
There is alot going on in this animation, I am going to sprite most of these pngs to reduce sever requests which may help, but im certain this isnt the root cause of this issue.
Has anyone come across this issue before?

So I have created a sprite for the majority of the png's that form my symbols. This has reduced the total number of sever image requests from over 70 to 5. this has worked really well and feel adobe could add a feature that creates one sprite from all the images within the library. The animation seems to run a lot faster than before and loads much quicker.
I am however still experiencing the problem mentioned above in chrome 37.0.2062.120 m.
The animation also runs slowly on the I pad and I phone which I guess is down to memory usage? The animation wasnt intended for the iphone, but it would be nice to see it run on the ipad.

Transitions flicker and flash when exported

Most of my clips have movement to them. The dissolve transitions have the green bar above them. After rendering these simple dissolve transitions in Final Cut, everything looks great. Playing within the program works perfectly. After "Export Movie" these same transitions flicker and flash and some of the clips end up with dark lines through them. I have tried flicker filter with inconsistent success. I have tried changing the length of the dissolve transition with inconsistent success. Any thoughts?

I think I solved one issue. My still images were way to high resolution. I didn't think that could even be a problem. Also, two were tiff images. Converting them to jpg solved their problems. I turned off the field dominance which cleared up one of the dissolves that had a filter applied. I am still getting some jerky dissolves but at least they do not flash.
As for the codec, It looks like it is the HDV 1080i60. Where and/or how do I change the default Quicktime render from RGB to YUV or vice a versa.

How to pack() twice without flicker (and other fireworks)? (with SCCEE :)

Hello, there is this "feature", that sometimes you have to call pack() twice to pack tightly around the subject. This has been discussed here before, some people call it a bug, camickr said he did not know why, this is just how the layout worked. OK, the problem with calling it twice, is that the user notices the window flicker.
The flicker does not happen every time (or, better say, we do not see it every time), that's why I put the whole thing in the loop in the SCCEE.
Even worse, this does not happen right now in my program, but in the SCCEE, there is also a boatload of exceptions (not mine), sometimes pack() even called twice does not work, and eventually, the whole loop just hangs.
(So, by Murphy's law, these things will eventually happen in my big program too)
Question: how do I resize a JFrame tightly around a JTextPane, without the flicker (and other special effects)? Here is the code, if you look carefully, you can tell the window momentarily went taller, before going shorter again - does not always happen, if you are lucky it will do this a few times before it hangs altogether... I do this many times in myprogram, as the user moves things around, they really notice.
If I call setVisible(false) before the pack()s and then back to true after, then of course, the flicker is even worse.

I tidied up your program a little, and you're right - I can see the window size flicker a little. It's very pronounced with only 1 call to pack(), and less so with 2 calls to pack(), but still noticeable.

Flicker and pixelized video after importing from motion

Hello, I captured a clip from HDV tape via Firewire using log and capture in FCP, then exported the clip to Motion where I applied filiters. I made a movie from Motion and imported it back in FCP. The movie required rendering to play and it now has a flicker and is grossly pixelized. Anyone know what could be causing this?

what settings did you use in motion? what settings are you using in fcp? my guess is they don't match.

Try resetting your device. HOld down the sleep and home keys, past the red slider, and until you see the silver apple, let it reboot. If that doesn't help, go to the app store and find a free app, any free app. Download and install and see if it fixes the issue. Sometimes the iPad seems to get confused as to who owns it and if they can use the apps etc, and downloading something else - which requires you to sign into the app store - often fixes that.

Screen flicker and trackpad issues on macbook pro 8 2

Hi I have a macbook pro (8,2) 15 inch with a high rez anti glare display. The display stared to flicker after living my computer open in arch for about 30 min. I tried rebooting and it even started happening in the boot screen and in mac os x. The last thing I did before it happened was setup pommed in arch and leve my computer open.
Also this has sort of been asked but my question is a little different. I am trying to set up my multitouch trackpad. I installed mtrack from the aur but changing the settings does nothing. What I want to accomplish is this. 1) I want to right click by clicking (not tapping) with one finger in the button right corner of my trackpad. 2) I need to disable tap to click!!!! 3) I want to be able to click the trackpad with my thump and use my index finger to drag instead of only my thumb. for example I want to click on a window border with my thumb and move it around with my index finger while holding down my thumb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have arch on a macbook as well. I have never seen a need for the many elaborate packages which claim to make these things work. If they're working then stick with it - but if you need another option, I've had great luck with simply properly configuring synaptics:

XG270HU freesync monitor flicker and graphical artifacts at 100,120, and 144Hz

Hello, just picked up this monitor from Newegg and a bit bummed. looks like I might have a defective monitor, anytime I switch to the higher refresh rates (100,120, 144Hz) I get audiable pops and a horizonal line checkboard artifacts on the screen at random times. I bought this monitor for Freesync gaming so this is a must for me to get working. At 60Hz I do not get any issues only 100hz or higher. I tried testing with and without crossfire and and freesync enabled and still the same issue. I am having a similar issue after buying the Acer XG270HU for the FreeSync support. I am seeing random flickering every few seconds if the monitor runs at anything higher than 60hz (freesync on, crossfire disabled). I created a short video showing what is happening, if you click at 1:15 seconds you can see the flicker twice, just keep looping the video. Its not always in the same part of the screen and its really random but consistent. It does not happen when I set the display to 60hz, it starts happening (even on the desktop) if the display is set to 120hz or 144hz or freesync is dynamically changing it over 60hz. Still photos flicker and transitions glitchy in 6.5

I am using Premiere 6.5 on a pc with vista. I am making a still photo video and maybe my initial settings are wrong. The preset I am using is dv-ntsc real time preview standard 48kHz. When I playback my timeline, my transitions are not smooth and are "bar-like" (for lack of a better word). The photos that have motion on them flicker. I have reduced the interlace on the photos with motion, I have rendered my timeline. I have tried the gaussian blur, but that makes the photo worse. I made sure the Rendering setting is at lower field first. Should I click on optimize stills? Can I reset my project settings after I have put everything on the timeline? All of my photos are .jpgs The only thing I can think of that I am doing wrong is my settings! I want to export this to a DVD. I have made an MPEG file and an AVI file and that obviously doesn't matter. This project is due in 4 days and I don't want to start over in another software program. Please offer any advice you can. The first thing you need to do is provide the DETAILS about your pictures... especially including how they were created and their pixel size
