Flicker Problem

I recently upgraded from SD to HD with a Panasonic HDC-TM700 AvCHD camera.  I like the quality of the picture but I ran into a quirky problem that I need help.  I have an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor with 2 GB of Ram running OS X 10.6.7.  My video drive is a Maxtor formatted Mac OS Extended, connected with Firewire 400 with 85 GB available. I am using FCE 4.01.
The input to FCE using Log and Transfer is very easy and intuitive.  The camera basicly shoots in 1080i and I set up my sequence as shown by screen shot:
I believe this is correct as I do not have to render anything after Log and Transfer.
Here's my problem: The videos shown in the Canvas and Viewer are clear and steady while I am editing, but when I export to Quicktime movie the output has an annoying flicker in it.  When I convert it for use on TouTube or H264 the flickering goes away in the conversion.  If I place a flicker Filter in each clip and export to Quicktime movie that also fixes the flicker.  My question is:  Why does the unfiltered output to Quicktime movie have the flicker.  Is it the conversion by FCE to QT, or is it some quirk of my hard drive, or the Data Rate, or whatever.
By the way, I sure do not like the new format of the forum.  I haven't figured it out yet.

It sounds as if the you're seeing interlace flicker. You're shooting in an interlaced format designed for television display. If you export to QuickTime Movie your video is interlaced. It's designed to be seen on a computer monitor.

    Log Message:
    - Fix flicker problem with constraint bound text that is being autoSized.  If the remeasure is done in a 2nd pass you will see a flicker as all the objects are moved to accommodate the reflowed text.
    - Fix data binding issue with text setter.
    - Rework measure() to accommodate implicit autoSize.
If explicitWidth or widthInChars specified and explicitHeight or heightInLines specified, or for now, blockProgression != "tb", the text has fixed dimensions and is not auto-sized.
If no text and width specified, but no height, start at specified width and one line high and grow taller.
If no text and height specified, start at 1 char wide with the specified height and grow wider.
If neither width nor height specified, and toFit lineBreaks, start at explicitMaxWidth, or default maxWidth of 160, and grow taller.
If neither width nor height specified, and explicit lineBreaks width is unlimited and can grow taller.
These are further constrained by min/max Width and Height except in the case that explicitWidth or explicitHeight are specified.
    - Change default maxWidth for RichText and SimpleText to 160 to match RET.  Previously it was 10000.  This is used for
text with toFit lineBreaks if a width isn't specified.
QA Notes: 12 or so TextGraphic tests fail because of the new default maxWidth.

  • Macbook pro retina screen flicking problem

I bought this 15 inches Macbook pro back in Nov, 2012. And I have the screen flicking problem in Dec.
The problem is the same here listed on youtube. You can find hundres of them just by searching "retina flicker" on youtube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko6WCqw20ZE
And I did a lot of researches on this. I had also gone to the Apple Store 2 times, one Genius Bar Staff told me this has to be a hardware problem and offer to fix my laptop, others said it might be a software based problem and adviced me to wait for the new system update. I don't have time for a long fixing so I chose waiting. That particular one who told me to wait for the next software update also encourage me to dig deep and tried to find the root cause by myself...and I did. I found my screen flicking problem could caused by cellphone inteference. And It seems that the Wi-Fi antena is also a key component here. If I turn off Wi-Fi completely, the flickering went away.
    Some solutions I found online
    1. It can caused by Enable Safari webGL. So disable webGL and turn off develop mode
    2. Disable displaycard auto switch in Power saving tab
    3. Close the lid put the sytem into sleep and re-open the lid
    4. stop using Wi-Fi. That's right people, try disable Wi-Fi!! It's the only working solution for me.
    5. It could be caused by CDMA cellphones including US Verizon brand cellphones and many others. GSM cellphones are OK. Try to turn off your cellphone or drive to a empty plaza and try to see your laptop still flickering at your car. Turn off your cellphone when You do this.
    What doesn't work
    Reboot
    reinstall OS
go to Apple Store and change Logic Board (Someone reported that after logic board change, the problem came back after a while)
Let me know if you guys have any findings, Thanks!!

I'm sure that you've seen the problem with 'burn-in' and 'ghosting' on some MBP-R machines in threads on this forum. It doesn't seem to be an overwhelming problem, but some have reported it.
Did you buy it from an Apple Store or online? Either way, you need to get tough with Apple. Tell them you need to keep your computer and, when they deliver a replacement to your local Apple Store, you'll bring it in for exchange. That's what they've been doing with most people that have had MBP-R problems - I've never heard of them requesting that you send your computer back before they will exchange. Did you contact your local Apple Store or was this response from an AppleCare phone conversation. If the latter, take it into the Apple Store, explain what you want to do, and I'm sure that they will work with you.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Light Flicker Problems

    Hi There,
I've been having some problems concerning a video I'm making. After importing all the Video I've noticed a flicker problem on the image. Its almost like a very small glow of light that is that is constantly flickering. The footage was filmed in the U.S and edited in the UK, so not sure if its to do with the difference in Hz from the ceiling lights or if theres an uneven exposure from the camera? If theres anyone who would know how to minimalise the flicker problem on Final Cut Pro it would be a big help.
    Many Thanks
    Matt

There most certainly could be a frequency problem with lights. Are they flourescent or sodium lights? Those kind of lights do pulse and are more problematic when used in slo motion captured material.
Also you can get problems with these lights with shuttered movie cameras and telecining to tape. Throw in the NTSC > PAL conversion will only exacerbate the problem!
Can you post an example clip?
The flicker filter in FCP won't help as that only corrects interlace problems.

  • MacBook Flicker Problem - on Leopard?

    Hi!
Just to see any possible solutions, if anybody with the flicker problem has the possibility to install the OS X 10.5 (Leopard), please let us know if the flicker is present also on Leopard.
As far as I saw by now, it happens under Windows XP in BootCamp with various users.
    Thanks!
    Cristian.

Your right checking a bug would be OK. Problem is they couldn't tell us about it because it involves Leopard, that is where the NDA applies. Also there is a lot of time between now and October so even if it existed at this moment it may not still be there in October when Leopard is released.
I guess I have been lucky I haven't had the flicker problem.

  • Flicker problem with shadow and highlights?

Does Premiere CS6 have the same flicker problem when using Shadow and Highlights as CS5?

Honestly, my recommendation would be to use another effect.  There's usually more than one way to get the same result, and some ways work better than others.

  • Has anyone got the screen flick problem solved?

    as above thanks.
(i am starting to get irritated of the flicking screen)

finally got my computer back with more problems than I sent it in with I think. They put in a new logic board, battery, and super drive. I no longer can see my serial number in the about this mac window. also, the battery is loose and sometimes the meter reads 0% and sometimes it will not turn on. I dont know what the deal is. The people that fixed it are in the middle of selling the store so I dont feel like deeling with them for a while until they get all moved. I might just call applecare in the morning or something. I hate this, I am having the worst luck with all my electronics lately.

  • Solved flicker problem with newer fglrx drivers

This has been annoying me since the move from 8.29 to 8.30: I have an integrated Xpress 200 on my laptop, and newer proprietary drivers caused the screen to flicker. This has caused me to stick with the older drivers, which restricted upgrades to X.org and the kernel. I was misled by some posts on the Internet to believe that this was the result of using custom modelines.
I have finally solved the problem yesterday. I am posting my findings in case anyone else has been suffering from the same behaviour.
The newer drivers come with an ACPI script, installed under /etc/acpi. The script is invoked every minute and inspects the current power status (i.e., A/C or battery). It then invokes
    aticonfig --set-powermode=[MODE]
to adjust the driver to the new settings. Each time this command is executed, it causes the screen to flicker.
Obviously, there is no need to run the script if the power mode has not changed since the last call. I have therefore modified the script to first check the current driver power mode, and execute the mode command only if a new setting is required.
    I hope this helps someone.

I need my hand held a bit here...
this seems to be the problem I'm having, ie the ac/battery event being called too frequently, but have no idea how to edit the script. I'm on an asus w3n, will it help to replace apci with asus-laptop and apcid daemon...or just add those and leave acpi daemon?
    apologies for my numbnut newbie-ness.

  • Flicker problems on Mac OS

I have a JPanel that contains several JLabels. I've attached a mouse listener and overridden the paint method for this panel to create a drag rectangle that is drawn based on the position of the mouse.
When this application runs on my windows machine, it runs quite well, and there is no flickering at all. Recently, I've ported my application to a Mac and this frame has some serrious flickering problems. Everytime the mouse moves, all of the JLabels flicker.
Here is my overridden paint method:
    public void paint(Graphics g){
    super.paint(g);
    Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g;
    g2d.draw(new Rectangle2D.Double(xpos,ypos, width,height));
Does anyone have any suggestions how to stop the JLabels from flickering on a Mac? It's almost like the Mac isn't doublebuffering the JLabels.
I'd really appreciate any ideas anyone has.
    Thanks!

Actually OS/X is based on a BSD variety of unix and should be pretty close to the Linux examples.
The problem you mentioned doesn't seem to have anything to do with Mac.
It seems that the problem is that you're using a JDK1.5 compiler on 1.4 source code. My guess is that the book is a little old. Those warnings are basically telling you that you're not using the Generics stuff from JDK1.5. You can use the "-source 1.4" option to javac to make them go away for now. Or you can find a newer textbook that also covers generics.
By the way, it's kind of a bad thing to put your own source code in the main JDK directory. If the book is telling you to do that, ignore it. Create a directory for your own code and don't mix it up with standard distribution stuff.

  • Mouse Pointer Flicker Problem!

This is the single most irritating problem behavior I have in CS5.
Very often after choosing a new tool, especially a new brush size/hardness from the palette, the mouse pointer begins to flicker.  It fairly rapidly alternates between an arrow and brush.  It flickers somewhat faster when moved, and doesn't stop flickering until drawing takes place (i.e. I touch the Intuos Stylus to the pad, or left-click the mouse)

Yes.  Last update was 6.1.5 in March.

  • Slideshow flicker problems

I am creating my first slide show using the Organizer and PRE10, exactly as recommended by Steve Grisetti in his book.  I have resized all the photos to 1000x750 at most, created the slide show using the Organizer, applied pan and zoom to most of the images, exported to PRE10.  In PRE10 I have added music (using fade in and out ) and the occasional title. The file is DV standard (I am in Australia). I have rendered the timeline and the green line shows. I have a number of problems:
    1. the preview window looks dreadful with thick vertical stripes in it - these look slightly different when I play the preview but are still there. They are not there in the exported file.  Why should the preview window not match the output even after rendering?
    2. Next problem is what output format do I choose?  Initially I'll be viewing on the PC so I chose FLV DV large.  I've also tested DVD PAL as I may burn a DVD later.
    3. Irrespective of output format the output looks bad wherever a pan and zoom has been applied - there is flickering, especially where there are lines in the image, such as the railings of a balcony.  I have tried various things - flicker removal on the photo, applying a gaussian blur in PS, de-interlacing the image, but none made a significant difference.  Also, even without pan and zoom my images don't look as sharp as if I use Picasa to do a simple slide show (no audio, titles, or pan and zoom though ).
Why is this so damn hard - in principle slide shows are something people do all the time.  I am sure I have watched friend's slide shows with pan and zoom - maybe their images were not of the sort to cause problems - vertical lines in the image seem to be the worst - or maybe I am more critical of my own presentation.
Any advice would be appreciated.  If necessary I will remove the pan and zoom from all slides.

I hope you found my suggestions somewhat useful, kjm.
You don't say which project settings you used when you set up your project, but it's pretty unlikely your output is going to be high enough resolution to play full-screen on your computer monitor. With DV settings, after all, you're only outputting essentially a 640x480 image! Most likely your computer monitor is at least twice that resolution wide and twice that resolution tall.
I don't know what the thick horizontal stripes are you're seeing. Have you rendered your timeline (press Enter) before previewing it on your timeline? Unless you've got green lines along the top of your entire timeline, your playback is going to look pretty bad.
As for your output -- again, it doesn't matter how large the file is you're outputting if your original file was only set up for standard resolution DV. You'll just get a large version of a small file -- which won't look good.
You say you've tried de-interlacing. Does that mean you applied Flicker Removal to each photo?
All that said, you can only go so far working with video resolution. If you're really looking to create slideshows that will look good on your computer, you might better consider a program called Pro Show Gold. Check it out online. It's a dedicated slideshow creator.
Premiere Elements works best a tool for editing video, DVDs and BluRays.

  • Screen flicker problem with T420s, from power-on -- before OS loads, even before boot.

I've just bought a new T420s and installed Debian GNU/Linux on it.  Had no screen problems the first few days.
This morning when I turned it on, the screen was flickering -- like it was doing a very slow refresh rate or something.  Extremely noticeable, and quite annoying :-).  Interestingly, the flicker started from the moment the screen came alive, when I turned the power on.  It persists through the boot loader sequence and into the operating system, etc.  I have powered the machine off and back on several times since then, but the flicker is still here.
Now, there is one interesting fact:
The last thing I did, right before the flicker started, was use the laptop with a dock + external monitor.  Not dual monitor, just a single external monitor -- the laptop's lid was down when it was in the dock.  The external monitor worked fine; at one point I opened the laptop's lid just to see what the screen looked like (I was curious because the external monitor's dimensions were very different from the T420s screen dimensions).  The laptop screen had garbage on it -- a kind of distorted, miscolored, and mis-aligned version of my usual operating system desktop.  But that didn't bother me -- I was using the external monitor, and didn't need the laptop screen for anything.  I closed the lid and kept working.
That night I powered it down in the dock.  This morning I packed it up and took it to work.  The first time I powered up, this new flicker was there.
Does it have something to do with the fact that I used it with a dock and/or external monitor?  It seems suspicious that the problem started right after the first time I did that.
By the way, this is a T420s with the stock video card, not the fancier Nvidia card.
Any ideas how to fix this?

    hey kfogel,
    welcome to the forums.
could you remove your Nix and place back the original OS ? I would like to know if the flicker occurs when your unit is on Windows or if it occurs while it is on Debian.
if the flicker doesn't occur when you have windows installed; i would suggest heading over to http://support.lenovo.com and update your whole unit before attempting to use Debian.

  • Any Blue Flicker Problems?

I have been experiencing with frustrating blue flickers after upgrading to IMovie 09 and am about to give up. Looks like Express 4 will be the way I go and LEARN how to use it.
Has anyone experiencing any "technical" or "blue flickers" problems with Express 4 AFTER upgrading to IMovie '09 and experiencing the "blue flicker"?
Is this the way I should go? The movie project I am working on is way too important to risk any "experimenting"
    Thanks for any input!

I have never heard of a "blue flicker" and why you should be experiencing one, whatever it may be, could only be guessed at after you give precise details of what you mean and under what circumstances it occurs.
The peculiarity of its nature suggests that it is possibly caused by something that you are doing incorrectly.

  • Polygon Flicker Problem

I'm having a problem that I was hoping someone out there might have an idea about, or at the very least, help me brainstorm possible things to check.
I'm very nearly finished writing a game demo for a space-based game using Java3D, and I just imported our spaceship models, and for some reason whenever they move (or the view moves) various polygons on them flicker in and out of existence. I replaced them with non-textured (ColoringAttributes only) Spheres, and get the same thing. When a spaceship (or Sphere) passes in front of a planet, you can sort of see both flickering through each other, as though Java3D doesn't know what order to render polygons in.
Now, what I think is the weirdest part, is that when i create a small program just to experiment with loading the models, that works fine. I've even added planets and backgrounds to it in a failed attempt to reproduce the problems I've been having in the game code. I've experimented with disabling picking, not compiling branch groups, high polygon counts, and everything else that I can think of that is different between the two programs. If you can think of anything that could cause this problem that is even halfway reasonable, please let me know.
If any of you think that having images up would make it easier to understand what I'm talking about, let me know that too and I can probably swing something.

alright, well lets see. My guess is that it has something to do with how you move your view or the objects. Cause you said it occurs when you move. I have a similar problem, which occurs only when I move, but it's only the edge of the model that flickers unsteadily. (I dont' know the solution to mine either lol) In any case, I suggest you re-examine the method in which you move things.
Maybe an image would help us here on the forums to figure it out. Also, could you describe what you do to move your objects or view?
