Flicker removal on horizontal lines and screen capture text

Hi All,
I often have to include a PC screen capture (such as an Excel screen) in a video. How do I minimise the amount of flicker when playing back on a CRT.
I understand the problem is in the interlacing. I have tried the anti-flicker filter and this just seems to make things softer without much improvement in the flicker.
I have seen a post which recommends using progressive frames for still images but does not explain how to do this.
Any assistance gratefully received!
Regards,
Duncan Rosie.

> If you are making NTSC projects, keep within the color gamut (15-235).
That should be 16-235. And, assuming you are working with RGB files, Premiere and/or Encore will automatically scale the RGB to fit within the 16-235 luminance range. PAL also uses the same legal luminance range. It is not exclusive to NTSC.
Here is decent trick -- it may not eliminate your flicker, but it will greatly help offset the severe blurring that occurs when applying Anti-flicker or variants of this technique (such as a vertical gaussian blur) to screen captures of GUIs, spreadsheets, etc.
1.) Open the screen capture bitmap file in Photoshop and scale it to exactly 200% using "Nearest Neighbor" resizing
2.) Bring that file into Premiere and use Motion to scale it to fit (scale with be 50% of what it was before you resized it)
3.) Apply Anti-flicker filter as neeeded
The nearest neightbor resizing method makes for "blocky" resizing that is horrendous with photos, but it ideal for screen captures -- so long as you only scale by 200%, %300, %400, etc.
This generates "extra pixels" by replicating exisitng ones that will help:
a.) The appearance of the image when scaled to compensate for aspect ratio
b.) Maintain better legibility even when strong softening filters (such as Anti-flicker @ 1.0) are applied
c.) Allow for tighter zoom-ins of your screen shots while maintaining relatively sharp edges

    Hi John,
I would take your machine into a Apple service center. Its highly likely a hardware issue. The most likely issue being the display has failed. If there is no external damage to the machines display they will replace the whole display under warranty for you.

  • My iphone 4s screen turned freaked out before my eyes, changing all different colours, now it is blue and black along the right side with horizontal lines, and is flickering. I DIDN'T DROP IT.

I was just sitting on the couch scrolling through facebook, I closed out of that and went to open safari, when it spazzed out, for a few mintutes it looked like LSD vision, it was all different colours and flickering the whole time. I turned it off and on again, and plugged it into my computer and now the right side is nearly completely blue, and bleeds to the left side with horizontal lines, and it is still flickering. I just finished paying the **** thing off. I thought I'd get another year out of it. I have taken exemplary care of it and it hasn't left the case since the day I bought it. I haven't dropped it, there was no warning for the screen to start doing this. So my question is, is there an easy fix (I am about to restore and update it, and I already played around with the screen brightness), and if not, am I going to have to pay for the screen to be replaced, because I don't have that kind money.

Probably sounded funnier in your head.

  • What is the white horizontal line and red vertical line on my brand new ipad mini?

Bought a brand new ipad mini 2 for my sons Christmas, took it out the box and it was during the set up process, ie entering his iTunes and icloud account, a white horizontal line and a red vertical line appeared on the screen and is there all the time now.  Have tried switching off and on and resetting, but it is still there.  Any ideas??

    Hi Tolmivooz,
So the lines didn't appear until you were into the setup?
Does the orientation of the lines change when you rotate the screen?
Thanks for trying the restart and reset. Please see if a restore helps.

  • Thin Horizontal Line Across Screen

I've had them before and they disappeared spontaneosly. The latest one seems to want to hang around. Any idea how to get rid of it?

This is a followup to my post earlier today. A web search on "Thin Horizontal Line Across Screen" turned up this article:
    http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/post24947-5.html
Sure enough, my horizontal line came back. I decided to follow the advice in the linked article. I didn't even have to twist the monitor. I barely tapped the screen as I was reaching up to twist the panel, and the line disappeared. This suggests to me that the problem is a loose internal connection between the driver circuitry and the panel.

When I turn on Messages, I can't see my messages.  All I can see is a screen with horizontal lines.  How can I get the regular Messages screen back?

The same is happening for me. Today I decided to reboot my PC because it was acting up a bit, go figure, and then for some reason at the same time the PC was restarting my macbook froze. I had to do a reboot with the restart button but then all that came up was a gray background and in the middle of the screen was a darker gray folder with a white question mark in the middle of it, blinking. I can't imagine why the restart would've affected my macbook. After finding information on how to fix this, I tried all of the steps that were given about using the mac OS X disk to use the first aid utility to fix it. When using the Disk Utility option whenever I select my hardrive and am in the First Aid tab, the only button I can use is the Verify Disk Permissions. The other three buttons, and namely the most important Repair Disk button, is/are not selectable (grayed out). I then tried resetting the PRAM the way they also said with the command + option + P + R and waited for the second startup sound. After that I gave the Disk Utility a second try, but still nothing. And now if I try to just reinstall the OS completely I can't even select a destination volume on the third step (Select Destination). Apparently this means i'm SOL.

  • 560ti - Horizontal Lines Across Screen

    Hi all,
I received a new PC today and when I set it up, there appears to be problems with the graphics card - there's a series of horizontal lines on the screen. Photos probably explain it better:
    http://imgur.com/a/o7MfN
The system is running 2x MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti Twin Frozr II in SLI
The computer also can't seem to recognise it has a 560ti installed at all - it was using a generic VGA adapter driver on first startup - just in case, I downloaded the latest software from NVIDIA, and they do not recognise the display being attached to an NVIDIA card.

I've tried both ports on the card and the same issue is there.
Do you mean test both cards?
I get no output from the 2nd card at all when they're in SLI.  I also can't get into the nvidia control panel to turn off SLI as the software doesn't recognise the GPU being an nvidia card.  I've tried physically disabling SLI (I removed the SLI bridge) but I still get no output from the 2nd card.
Is this normal?  Or is there something else I have to do to test the other card?

do test each one VGA alone to isolate the issue.
E.g. take out the second VGA from your computer and leave just 1 installed.
Then see if the problem persist or not.
Then take it out and replace it with the second VGA into the same PCI-E slot[use the 1st one close to the CPU socket]
Then retest when using the second VGA alone.

  • Hp 2711x Monitor horizontal line across screen

Monitor HP 2711x has a horizontal line about 2/3 the way down, completely across the screen about 1 pixel wide.   The line looks like a slice trough the current screen image to some kind of image behind the current open windows, but there is no such image behind.  Adjusting the screen resolution turns the screen black monentarily which sets the line's color to black when the screen reappears, but then the line changes to again look like a slice through the current window to some kind of false window behind.  Rotating the screen image does not rotate the line.  Adjusting the screen reolution does not alter the line.  Resetting the monitor to factory default does not alter the line.  Changing the PC providing input to the screen does not change the line.
Latest HP driver is installed.  Monitor's serial number:[Personal Information Removed].  Any suggested fix, please?  Thank you.

  • Horizontal lines on screen edges macbook pro unibody 2008

I've suddenly got horizontal lines around the edges of my screen. I'm on a MBP late 2008 15". I have no idea what's causing it but it's definitely hardare related since they don't show up on a screen shot. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You're just going to have to break down and take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP. It could be a GPU glitch, anything. Nothing odd about it not showing on a screenshot - you can only capture what's there on screen.
Go ahead and make that appointment with the Genius Bar folks...

  • Macbook w/ whole slew of problems...Won't Start Up, Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk, Horizontal Lines on Screen, Etc.

I purchased my Macbook in the summer of 2011 and before it went berserk it was running Mavericks. 3 years later, it's finally seemed to have run its course.
It won't start up normally and it won't start up on safe boot. Attempting to use disk utility to repair the disk only gives me the message: "Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible." There are also horizontal lines across the start screen (before it inevitably shuts down) and the screen looks very faintly purple-ish/off-colored.
This actually didn't come out of the blue. On Monday, my macbook suddenly froze, went white, and beeped three beeps repeatedly. I restarted it and backed up all my important work files and set up an appointment at the genius bar for Friday once work ended. It remained buggy during this process with the beeps returning an occasionally a blue screen popping up.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough space to back up my important photos and by the time I returned on the next day with an external hard drive to store them on, my macbook would no longer turn on.
Is there anything I can do to bring my macbook back to life? Ideally I'd like for it to last one more year before I graduate college. Is it still salvageable, and if so, is it worth salvaging?

I hate to spread gloom, but that computer has serious problems. The only people who can diagnose the problem(s) are technicians. I would take it back to the Apple store for further testing.

  • 24-inch IMac Horizontal lines and Smudges

When I do a restart and the screen shows up with the apple and
the gear turning there is now a horizontal line all the way across
the screen as well as displayed smudges on the right side.
My Apple Care expires next month and wonder if there is a fix
    for this problem

Stay tuned for the happy ending next week. Until then I am running with
the SMCFan pumped up to compensate for the bad HD fan.
The new fan and display showed up on Tuesday and dropped off the iMac at the Apple
Store late in the afternoon. They were slammed with people and all kinds of drop off
repairs. The good news is the 5 to 7 day repair time turned out to be 2. I had the iMac
back Thursday AM (when the store opened)
The new display looks great. Sort like getting new glasses.

  • Macbook Air early 2014 - Horizontal lines in screen

    Hi to all,
I would like to add my problem to the community. I bought this September a Macbook Air (i7,8GB RAM, 256GB, Samsung Display LSN133BT01A02) and I had the horizontal lines problem. As you understand the problem is not great and it does not affect the performance of my Mac but since I bought it I want everything to be perfect (it is not a cheap machine). So, I contacted Apple and they suggested me to go to an Apple Service Centre. The "geniuses" changed the Logic board and they have done a mistake in its order, so I had it back with an i5 processor. "Fortunately", even with the downgraded machine I had the same problem. So, I recontacted Apple and I had a replacement of my machine. Now, I have one new machine (i7,8GB RAM, 256GB, Samsung Display LSN133BT01A02) and again the same problem. Guys this situation drives me crazy and completely disappointed with my Air (ok, I know that I may overreact), but my main issue is to find out if this is a software or hardware issue. In both cases (old and new machine), the lines were appearing after many hours of usage, they had a length varying from few inches to the whole screen and their number were mainly one (one pixel thickness). An other interesting point (that makes me believe in the software issue) is that the colour of this line was the one of the previous window that I open. As a result, having many windows open, the colour of the line is the "damaged" colour of the previous window that I minimise.
To troubleshoot the problem I have done a complete format of my Mac, SMC reset, PRAM reset but still the issue is there. When the line is there I move the screen and nothing happens & in the screenshot the lines are not present.
Now, I want to discuss about the possibility to be a universal problem with Airs (and especially with the ones that have Samsung Display). I am wondering about the possibility of being so unlucky since also other guys had the same issue after even 3 replacements. I really opened this thread so as to hear your opinion and if somebody troubleshooted the problem it could be extremely interesting. I would like also to add that also in Yosemite the problem is still there.
    Thank you all!

Just to add also a more technical view point: I said that I have this problem after many hours of usage. So I guess that a garbage collector (software base) of the Mac does not work so properly and consequently it leaves garbage to the memory. This may lead some timers (internal clocks) to sub-function and as a result the rendering of the graphics to be damaged in some points.
I am not an expert but I try to guess what is happening.
    Thanks for any contribution.

  • Horizontal lines across screen on hp beats touchscreen laptop

I bought this lap top less than 6 months ago.It is the HP special edition beats touch screen lap top. After owning it for about two weeks a green horizonal thn line apeared on my screen.I didn't drop it and the line wasn't really bothering me so I ignored it.Then a couple of weeks later I took it on a trip with me, in a padded laptop backpack. I got another hoiontal line.I am now up to five horizontal lines with a fiveish month old laptop. It has now become annoying and gets in the way when I'm trying to read things on the laptop. Is this a problem with the computer graphics or the screen? What can I do?

If you purchased your MBA from Apple you may  within 14 days from the date of purchase return the unit for an exchange or a refund.  I would seriously consider that option.
