Flicker removal on still photo time lapse sequence

I'm going to be shooting a time lapse of a plant growing using a sodium grow light. I know this light has a terrible flicker and I would like to remove it. I'm shooting RAW using a Canon Eos 1DS and processing the stills in Lightroom. In lightroom, it appears that I'm able to "develop" the stills with the same exposure and color settings but when I bring them into Motion of FCP the flicker is still there. Can anyone recommend a third party plugin for FCP or Motion that can remove flicker, preferably one that has a demo version that I can try out? Or can anyone recommend a different grow light to try out?
I'm working with a Mac Pro dual 3.0 GHz running the latest version of Final Cut Studio and Leopard.

Hey guys, I'm working with Jon on this project. We are shooting timelapse, as in one photo every 10 seconds. The flicker we see isnt in one photo, it's when we put all the photos together into a sequence and replay them. The problem is that picture a has a much brighter light than picture b and when you play picture a and picture b together sequentially, it creates a flicker. Filters don't seem to work and the problem with sodium lights is they dont have a set flicker frequency. Does anyone have any experience shooting with LED lights or other grow lights that have a set frequency? I think this is our only solution.
Do you have your camera set on auto?
Sodium vapor lighting strobes near but not exactly at your mains frequency, 50 or 60 Hz. All you have to do is use a shutter speed that spans a good number of impulses so they average, say, 1/2 second. You will not detect a change in exposure over a range of images. One full second would be better as it would capture between 57 and 62 pulses at 60Hz, not quite enough to significantly alter the exposure between frames when going to video's much lower grayscale range. However, what you REALLY want is a strobe that completely overpowers the ambient lighting when the shutter fires at 1/250th second.
Pulling your existing images into Photoshop and running a batch process on them to equalize the exposures is a simple and quick alternative to reshooting.

No. You should have bought Lightroom.

I have a time lapse of some traffic and was hoping anyone knew of a good way to make this loop.

    Thanks for any ideas.
    Craig

Import the time lapse sequence to the project, right click on the footage and select interpret footage, set the number of times you want the footage to loop, then drop it in the timeline and reset the out point.
You're going to get a jump when the loop starts. It will take a couple of layers and some real clever manipulation to hide the jump but if the shot was done right it's possible.

  • Hello! I am having trouble creating a still picture time lapse! I am trying to create a 20 or 25 fps

Hi! i am really looking for some help here using lightroom 4! i am using the free trial version (not sure if that has anything to do with it but on the adobe website it says it is the full version) I have a list of all my pictures and i go to slideshow and i dont understand how to make it in 20fps.. my pictures are in RAW, Using a Nikon D5100, the only option i see to change the picture speed is to make it 0.1 second each picture! any help would be much appreciated! i have googled it and anything i can find is for lightroom 3! i am using lightroom 4, i have downloaded the templetes for light room 3 and nothing is working.. i could make the video in windows movie maker but that program is horrible..
Other question i am wondering is when i lable my pictures with my logo is it possible to just save the file to my desktop or do i have to email it under the wed setting? i can easily get my logo on the picture but i dont know how to save it. i just want the file and not a photo book on email. when i click sync into my folder, my logo does not appear on the picture!? I am new to the program and i would really like to figure this out!

Yes - I understand how busy you can get. This is first time I could check this forum since I posted this question a few weeks ago. Anything would help as I am finding that the answer may be that our AD needs to be more robust and defined with specific groups. I have read and reread all the pages in the admin guide regarding access levels and identifiers and such but it still seems to me that it boils down to being able to obtain what you need from the AD because even identifiers need an appropriate value to assign access levels. In our AD we only have Faculty, Staff, and Students as groups and nothing else that is relevant to iTunesU use anyway. Faculty and Staff are not divided into anything else so the only credential I can past to iTunesU is whether or not they are Faculty or whether or not they are a student and that is it. I am setting up some special AD group now so at least I can give some other users elevated access to some courses but that may be the extent of what I can do unless I am missing something.

  • Time lapse from stills

I am making a time lapse movie from a group of hi-res still images. The final needs to be HD to play looped on the clients HD TV.
We shot the stills only about 20secs apart. When I play the movie back, I get quite a bit of flicker. I do not beleive it is interlaced flicker I've been reading about. It is more of an exposure variance flicker. I've read that , that can be common on still camera time lapses due to the aperture is not exactly the same on all frames?? I hear there may be a plug in, Boris FX for after effects that will help with this??
Any help on this would be great!
Also, the test movies I've made with several different compressions are too soft.
I'm Pretty new at this. Again any help is greatly appreciated.

Since it sounds like you have After Effects, you may want to check out Stephen Schleicher's tutorial on removing the strobing from time lapse footage. It sounds like it's exactly what you're looking for. It uses the built-in Color Stabilizer filter to accomplish its task.
It's the first tutorial on the following page:

  • True time-lapse from stills

There's been at least one post on this, but I have not seen any resolution.
I wish to import a few thousand stills created with my Sony HDR HC3 shot at 1 still per minute (or 10 minutes). I'd like end up with a HD movie, 30 frames per second, with each still providing one frame. Importing through iMovie HD gives various results. I try to "apply" 1 or 2 or 3 frames to each photo, but end up with 9.29 seconds per still photo. Basically, the media/photo import in iMovie seems designed for movies with embedded stills, not time-lapse. Is this the way to make true time-lapse in iMovie HD (6.0.2)?
If iMovie HD can't do this, is there other software that will package stills into HD video format at this fast rate?

    Karl,
After thanking you and reporting that your suggestion for importing stills at 1 frame per image worked well, I find today that I can't get it to work again! Today I still get the imports set to 9.29 seconds each. Once this morning an import came in with 2 frames duration. In all cases, I selected a previously imported clip whose duration had been set the way you suggested to 1 frame. So this variable behavior makes me think that the KB code may be more buggy than just the text box.
Just to be sure I'm not misunderstanding you...I'm using File/Import command, and iMovie is in the "Clips" mode. The selected clip with the 1 frame duration is selected in the clips bin before importing a new still.
I feel a bit silly reporting that a computer is producing variable results, but it seems to be, and I'm no neophyte to computers.
    Any ideas?

  • How to mix time lapse with still images and imported movies ?

    Hello
I have been shooting photos (time lapse with Camera Pro) and movies with a Nokia N8 and would love to use iMovie to mount all that.
Unfortunately, for the time lapse I cannot get the duration of the photos to 0.03s, it just won't accept it. I have been looking around the forum and could only find sort of solutions when you have a transition or effect on the pictures but not when they are just fit to the screen...
So now the time lapse looks much slower and broken than the movie itself... and it does not look nice.
Another way would be to make the time lapse with QT Pro and then import it but I am affraid I am loosing quality in the process.
Anybody knows how to fix this duration problem ?
Thank you in advance for any helpful answer.

    Mac OS 10.6.8

    Able, Jim,
thanks a lot, both solutions work just fine.
Take the first image, adjust the Effects, copy it, select the other images and past attributes
    and
just put all images together, make a new sequence and use that first sequence as nested sequence and put the effects on that

  • How do I convert time lapse still images into a video in Premire Elements 13?

I have 250 images taken at 15 second intervals that I want to convert to a video. I am not having any luck finding how to get elements to put the single pictures together. After I import the images I can play them but have not been able to shorten the time each still plays. So It is like a slide shot and not time lapse.

  • Time-lapse Still Images

After two hours of reading on the web, I was unable to find any help for my problem.  Perhaps someone out there has some knowledge to share.
I have several years worth of still images.  The images were taken in 15 minute intervals.  I need to display the images as a time-lapse movie with controls to step through each frame (still) or animate to time-lapse forward or in reverse.  I would like to dynamically select the images corresponding to any date from a calendar component.   A cover flow would be nice if it could somehow display the respective date with the image.
However the best method is for doing this, the result needs to function within a Flex application.  I am just a beginner Flex developer so I need at least to know if this is feasible.  All opinions are welcome.
    Thanks!

  • The editable rectangles of my still photos in the composition panel suddenly stopped showing up.

    Hi There, Adobe Community!
I am relatively new to After Effects CC and am using it to create a stop motion film with a large amount of photos.
Usually, when importing the individual images into my composition panel, a sequence of editable rectangles appears in the compostition panel allowing me to edit the frame length of the still photos.
After around 950 imported images, the little rectangles suddenly stopped showing up. But when looking at a preview of the project, it's as if the photos are in there, in the sequence they should be. I'm just unable to edit them like the previous ones with recangles showing.
I probably am not describing this too well, so here is a screen shot which hopefully makes my problem somewhat more clear. The area of issue is where you see the descending sequence of boxes in the comp panel. The red tracking bar is there to show that there are still photos continuing the sequence, I just can't see the boxes for em..
thank you so much for any help in the matter!

So I guess you are talking about the layers in the timeline go missing, not the handles in the Comp Window.
I think you have run into a display bug. Try selecting the top hundred or so layers and pre-compose them. If the missing layers appear then that's the problem. I have had it happen a couple of times before in previous versions of AE..
Here's a workflow hint for you, break your comps up into short sequences instead of trying to do a 4 or 5 minute piece with 900 layers in a single comp. You'll find editing and changing a lot easier.
I would also pre-mix your music. AE is a really terrible music mixer....

  • How do you set up a TIME-LAPSE movie "before" putting into CS5 ??

Is there a way to put together a time-lapse sequence shot with a DSLR (comprised of many stills) into a movie at 30fps, BEFORE putting it into the Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 timeline?
QuickTime does NOT work because the images I need to use are TIFFs of much too high a quality for it to handle.  I know, I've tried.
I know I can put the stills into CS5 as a series of shots lasting 1/30sec each to make a sequence, but that does not allow me to control the finished sequence "as a whole" for further altering like duration or other effects.  Otherwise, I would have to make alterartions one frame at a time, which is ridiculously time prohibitive and not precise.
I'm using a Windows7 PC, and a Nikon D2X DSLR camera shooting in RAW.
Any advise and help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

First of all, Pr won't import the RAW images, so you'll need to pre-process them and convert them to a more "standard" image file format, such as TIF or JPG. I think you already realize this, but thought I'd just mention it.
When you want to import as a timelapse clip, check the "Numbered Stills" checkbox in the Import dialog, and select just the first image in the numbered sequence and click Open. This will create a clip using each image as a frame of the clip; you can select this clip, right-click, and select Modify > Interpret Footage to set the frame rate you like. There is also a check-option in the flyout menu of the Media Browser called "Import Numbered Stills as a Sequence" that does the same thing; just select that, import the first image, and the rest of the images will be imported as part of the clip.
Once this is done, the images will act as one clip, so a single effect will affect all frames in the clip.

  • Problem with importing images into time lapse

    Hi
I am having problems with importing still images into a time lapse sequence in photoshop and would appreciate any suggestions!
I want to create a time lapse using a sequence of still photographs.  All file names are sequentially name/numbered.
I am using the Motion workspace, and have followed all of the instructions available.
Create correct sized new document (film & video).
    Create video timeline.
    Set frame rate.
Choose 'create new video layer from file'.
Point to first image in the folder where the images are stored.
At this point, no matter what I have tried, I receive this error:
I have tried different sized new documents; tried jpegs and tiffs; tried different frame rates, tried different qualities and sizes of images; tried selecting the last image instead of the first (one recommendation).
If I use the 'Place' command from the file menu (and check the 'image sequence' box) instead of selecting 'Create new video layer' from the layers panel, it loads fine and I can still render the video.
It took me most of a day to discover this workaround, but every other reasonable 'how-to' that I can find says that I should be able to do it by opening files into a new video layer and it seems as though the new video layer option may give me more alternatives.
Anyone have any idea why I could be having these problems?
I have reset Photoshop, deleted the settings file, even reinstalled it.  I use 64-bit on windows 7 and even installed the 32-bit to try that, but all with the same result.
    Stuart

Unfortunately, yes--I've tried it that way over and over, and every other way I could think of.  The files are all in one folder, and I've converted the raw files to both tiffs and jpegs.  I even tried converting them to jpegs at the final pixel dimensions.  Each folder that I have used only contains one type of file, and they are all part of the same sequence and sequentially numbered.  I have even tried renumbering the files with numbers first, numbers last, numbers only, moving underscores.  I moved the files from my external hard-drive to the desktop ... I have a lot less hair than I had only a few days ago!
I've looked at a few other tutorials that outline the same sequence of steps, and tried them over and over, and then changing one step at a time to make sure that it was not a single step that caused the problem.
The thing that is really bugging me is that it works fine if I use the different approach of using the place command instead.
Anyway, thanks for all of your time.  It's going to be a lot simpler to just stick with 'place' command and I will likely do that, but I tend take things like this as a challenge.  I like to know WHY it won't work for me.  Sometimes it seems that there is just no logical explanation!

  • Correct project settings for Brinno time lapse cameras?

    Hi,
I am totally new to all this so please forgive if an obvious answer.  I have been doing a building project time lapse using some time lapse cameras by Brinno. They are the TLC200's (http://www.brinno.com/html/TLC200.html). I am about to start a new project to put together the final timelapse but have no idea what type project settings to start it as. They claim to record in 1280x720 HD and output a raw avi file of the time lapse sequence after filming (each frame i think is captured as jpeg). You pre set the number of frames it takes (eg 1 every 30 minutes like I have) and what frame rate it puts the sequence of individuale captures together and outputs to the avi file (I choose 10 fps). That is all the informatoin I have. Any ideas?
    Many thanks
[I though I would also mention it is ultimately going to be around a 1min30s - 2 min video at the end to be posted on youtube.]

First, you need to find out exactly what is inside your file
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
    What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen

  • Time-lapse still photos to IMovie???

    Greetings.
I have a Nikon D2x that will shoot time lapse photography. I tried a test of 30 images (one second of video). So I have a folder of JPG images which I then resized to 640x480 at 72dpi.
At first I tried to import these stills into IM just by dragging and dropping my pictures into the clips window to the right of the viewer. It took a while for these to "render" but when they finished, I placed a few of the images in the time line.
I pressed play, thinking that each photo would show for 1/30th of a second, but what happened instead, stayed on the first photo, did a pan out, and then went to the next photo.
My question, (and maybe IMovie is the wrong app for this) is how do you take a sequence of still photos and have them play each for 1/30 or 1/24 of a second so that I can see the out come of my time lapse photography?
    Thank you for your help.
    Jonathan

how do you take a sequence of still photos and have them play each for 1/30 or 1/24 of a second so that I can see the out come of my time lapse photography?
The easiest is to use QuickTime Pro ($30, from Apple). It lets you import a series of images to a movie, creating just what you want. You can tell it to import the images at 30 frames per second or any duration you want.
It can be done in iMovie too, but there are some hurdles. One is that iMovie lets us import a photo with a duration no shorter than 3 frames per second (shown as 0:00:03).
But there is a back door. See this topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3210397
I pressed play, thinking that each photo would show for 1/30th of a second, but what happened instead, stayed on the first photo, did a pan out, and then went to the next photo.
That happened because the Ken Burns settings in the Photo Settings window were set to zoom in. Turn off the Ken Burns checkbox and import the image as a still instead of an animated video clip.
