Flickering black line below menubar in mavericks

In december 2013 I purchased my new macbookpro with retina display (10.9.1 preinstalled, 16GB RAM). Without having any other third party applications installed I noticed right from the beginning, that the lower tiny black line that separates the top menubar from the lower part of the screen sometimes flickers. I've seen it quite often, sometimes when using mail, sometimes when using preview. Here is what I did to solve the issue:
Update to 10.9.2 ---> same problem
PRAM Reset ---> same problem
SMC Reset ---> same problem
Run OSX on Safe Mode ---> same problem
Also what I can say is that my logic board was replaced after a few weeks since a fan was making noise and had to be replaced. Also with a new logic board the issue is still the same. Then a few days later I visited a friend of mine. She also purchased a new mac. when helping her on getting to know the mac, I noticed the same problem on her screen.
I've never seen that on my older macbook pro from early 2008 running 10.6.8
So my question: Is that a known issue? And is there anything I can do to fix it, apart from wating for apple to update Mavericks? It seem like it is not hardware but software related.
Thanks for your time.

  • Black line flicker after speed change

I have this really annoying problem. The DV footage from my cannon XM2 plays fine in the timeline but as soon as i apply changes in speed I get the dreaded flickering black line at the top of my screen. I know there are lots of posts out there about similar issues, but most are with regard to still images as apposed to video which is what I'm using. Does anyone know exactly what causes this during the speed change process and if so, what can be done to prevent this? I have a hunch its to do with scan rates as the problem only occurs within certain speed ranges. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I believe Patrick Shefield posted a method here a while back, for doing speed changes using compressor which gave a much better result. Might try a search for it here.

  • How to fix black horizantal black lines on 2010macbook pro 17' screen?

    Hi everyone!
I come to the community for help after  looking everywhere on the internet. I've had a problem now with my computer for a while where these strange black lines (always horizontal in nature) appear on my screen. I have two pictures below:
    http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/hh521/violentfirebomb/blacklines02_zps5de5cc 51.jpg
    http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/hh521/violentfirebomb/blacklines01_zpsfe260c 8d.jpg
These black lines will appear out of no where and they won't go away unless I select whatever is there and move my mouse. If it's across some font, I can select the font and easily go over the black line and it'll disappear.
Also, the more permanent things is random drop shadows from open windows won't work or the shadow won't work in places. Sometimes the font below a folder or above an icon on my dock will just be gone, like a chunk of it missing the size of those black lines you see in pictures above.
Is it something I can fix? Should I take it into the genius bar? My computer is a 17' Macbook Pro from 2010 and I'll be honest, this never happened until I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I even reinstalled Mountain Lion but the black lines and random text as well as drop shadow disappearances have returned.
Let me know what everyone thinks!  I'd like to solve this mystery as quickly as I can! Thanks in advance.

When you have problems with the display, there are usually three possibilities:  The wire connection is faulty, the display is faulty or the GPU is having problems.  All are are hardware issues that cannot be solved by software and generally do not fall into the do it yourself category.
    Ciao.

  • Flickering black boxes on CS6 with Macbook Pro Intel Iris

I'm experiencing a flickering black box whenever using large brush sizes on Photoshop CS6 using a Macbook Pro (16GB RAM, 2.8 GHz i7, Intel Iris, Late 2013 13") similar to what is shown on: black flickering boxes on Vimeo.  The issue stops if you: Preferences -> Performance -> Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor."  I've contacted Apple Care multiple times and they say it is an Adobe issue.  I've attempted uninstalling/reinstalling CS6, resetting NVRAM and SMC, and verified CS6 and System settings are all up-to-date.  When booting in Safe Mode the issue is also resolved (as it appears Graphics Processor is disabled).  There appears to have been a similar issue on the 2013 Macbook Air that Apple released a fix for (MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Software Update 1.0) but I do not see anything regarding the Macbook Pro line.  Anyone experience/resolve this issue?

Professional engineers would look at the report, even if it happens in a single application, because usually that one application is just more commonly used and exposes an existing problem that is only occasionally seen in other applications.  (hint: the OS and video card drivers draw the cursor, not the application, so the driver and OS are responsible for drawing glitches with the cursor)
And for us to write up a bug for Apple, we need a reproducible case - but we can't reproduce it on our systems. Apple needs information about your system to see what specific GPU/CPU configuration is affected by this driver bug (and they have all the hardware variants to try it on).
And we have been testing for similar issues since the MacBookAir cursor bugs appeared - but haven't seen any after Apple's patch, despite testing on all the systems we have available (which is quite a few, but we can't have every single possible Macintosh configuration).

  • Photoshop CS6: Screen flickers black when using brush tool on MBP 2013

I'm experiencing a flickering black box whenever using large brush sizes on Photoshop CS6 using a Macbook Pro (16GB RAM, 2.8 GHz i7, Intel Iris, Late 2013 13") similar to what is shown on: black flickering boxes on Vimeo.  The issue stops if you: Preferences -> Performance -> Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" and restart the program or backrev to CS6 13.0.0 (or anything before 13.0.4).
I've attempted uninstalling/reinstalling CS6, resetting NVRAM and SMC, and verified the system is all up-to-date.
I've contacted Apple Care multiple times and they say it is an Adobe issue.  And Adobe is insisting is a CPU/GPU driver issue just like the Macbook Air issue Apple already fixed.

You may be able to get a display driver update from the laptop manufacturer.
Unfortunately, if none of the workarounds is circumventing the problem for you, and there are no display driver updates that solve the problem, you may want to escalate it to the laptop maker.  They in turn can push through a new display driver update.  They should take responsibility for making your system work with modern, professional software.

  • C309g Scanned files are saved as thick black lines and thin white lines

    Hi there,
I am able to scan the documents and see them briefly in the HPScan software but once I have saved them (.pdf or .jpeg) and tried to open them in any application, all I get is a file that consists of thick black lines spaced out with thin white lines.  Therefore whatever I scan is useless as it cannot be viewed in any way.
I am running Mac OSX Mavericks and have run all the updates and installed the latest drivers.  Originally I was unable to save anything but after perfroming the updates I was able to save the scans but it triggered the black and white lines.  The printer is connected to a network via Ethernet.
I tried scanning a blank white page but the output file is the same with the black and white lines.
    Please help.

  • Weird black lines around windows

    Macbook Pro 15in. Mid 2010
Processor:  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory:  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  Intel HD Graphics 288 MB
    Software:  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
    Hey everyone,
Whenever I open different apps, (Word, Preview, Reminders, etc.) or when I hover over apps to select them, I get these weird black lines that outline the window. I have reset the PRAM before and it fixed it temporarily, but then it returned. If I go to "displays" and switch from 1440 x 900 to 1344 x 840, and then switch it back, it gets rid of the black lines. Any ideas?? I've included a photo of what it looks like. As you can see, the black lines on the left of the window is what I am talking about. Any ideas or information will be greatly appreciated. EDIT: This did not occur until after I had upgraded to Mavericks when it came out.

    Hello S:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
i think the cause could have been a finder add-on i used for a while (totalfinder), since it was an alpha build.
Almost assuredly (I will not give a lecture on Alpha or Beta software). Did you uninstall it somehow?
In any event, you have a couple of options.
Easiest first - trash a couple of preference files (com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.finder.plist) and restart.
If that does not work, I would restore (hopefully you have one) the system to a point before you added the Alpha software.

  • New LG204TW 20" widescreen monitor shows black lines ??

Yesterday I picked up the new LG L204TW widescreen monitor for my Intel Mac Mini.
The display is detected by OSX and I can run the native resolution of 1680x1050 @ 60Hz. via DVI.
But there is a sort of flickering of the screen. Actually there are black horizontal lines showing up. This happens mostly when browsing.
When I open for example a Quitime window and move the window of the playing video over the black lines, the lines are gone. So I think it is not the display itself.
Changing the resolution does not help. Any idea how this can be solved?
    Regards,
    Armand

Hook up another monitor that you have and see if it is your mac, if it isn't your mac then take the LG screen back to the shop, ask for full refund and consider another monitor.

  • MSI GS60-2PC Screen flicker and horizontal black lines issue

After about 2 weeks of using my GS60, I began to notice that the screen sometimes flickered, and on other occasions horizontal black lines would appear. I have updated my GTX driver to the latest version, and I haven't been able to find any help on the net. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Hi!!! I'm Manuel from Argentina. I bought a MSI GS60 in miami 5 months ago, and... I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!! sometimes mi screen is flashing and appeared horizontal lines  (blacks).
There's no solution for this problem? it's a very expensive laptop.
    I hope someone can help.
    greetings from Argentina!!

  • Canvas flickering black in FCPX

Everything was fine until last night. Suddenly couldn't see anything in the canvas but figured out that hitting W fixed that problem.
Now all video in the canvas is flickering black when I play the video. Looks like about 2-3 frames of video interchanging with 2-3 frames of black at all times. Haven't seen any previous posts in the community that can solve this.
Also, when I import videos, I don't see the normal film strip in then browser, just a series of screen shots one after the other, and whichever screenshot the playhead is on gets displayed as black rather than scrolling through the video as I scrub across. I attached a screenshot. Any ideas??

This worked very briefly. I originally had the problem while re-editing the entire project because all of the video clips somehow disappeared (also, I did the first project with GoPro footage with the fisheye effect, and I'm replacing that footage with the same clips converted to widescreen).
I trashed the preferences using Preference Manager and then the clips played fine, no flickering. I then went back to my first project (see attached screenshot) to see if that one would play, but that whole project is still black for some reason. I tried re-linking the clips, but notice in the screen shot below, they don't show up as offline, there's just nothing there. Then I went back to my second project, where the flickering was yesterday, and the flickering is now back. I trashed the preferences again and this time it's not fixing the problem
The screenshot below is of my older project. Notice the playhead creates a blank square in the browser and nothing shows up in the canvas. This is the same in my other project, but all playback has that flickering.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

  • Black line under title bar in AIR-App

Hi, does anyone know how to remove that black line under the title bar
which is shown in a MAC-Air Application?
I know I can solve this problem by making the whole app transparent. But that also means that
I have to do the whole skinning by hand, thats something I want to avoid. ;-)
    thx
    Mike

I ended up re installing Mavericks after the last update (10.9.1) from a bootble USB stick. The problem appears to have gone away, so maybe my original upgrade of Mavericks caused the problem???
I downloaded Mavericks again from the app store. When it had finished downloading (approx 5Gb) I exited the installer and created a bootable USB (needs to be 8GB minimum). Then booted from USB and ran the Mavericks installer. As I said problem seems to have disappeared......
I used this article http://www.macworld.com/article/2056561/how-to-make-a-bootable-mavericks-install -drive.html and used the method in Option 1 in the article to create the drive. A Synopsis of the steps are:
Format the USB using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended with GUID partition.
Open Terminal and paste the following command press Return and enter admin password when prompted
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
It takes a while to create and copy the installer. (Could be up to 30 mins)
Finally reboot and hold down Option key while computer boots then select the USB drive.

  • Solid Black Lines/Blocks Over Personal Data

Some printouts have solid black lines and/or solid black boxes in sections of the printed page.  They generally appear over areas containing personal data (name, address, account #, etc.).  Typically happens when printing statements from third-party websites.  Occurs when printing black and white only and when printing color.  Printer is calibrated and not experiencing other issues. Any thoughts oh what is causing this and how to correct?  Thank you.

Welcome to the HP Forums , I saw your post about some of your printouts having the personal data blacked out when they print out. I have personally heard of some third party websites printing forms like this for security reasons. However, you can try printing them from another web browser, which has worked for some. • Black Line

When I go under the "clock" and choose my clock, there is a little black line right below where it says "Delete this Clock." It's only on this screen, but I'm wondering if it's even supposed to be there.
Does anyone else have this on their nano?

Joy, yeah I have it too.
If you scroll onto "delete this clock" and center-click, the nano goes to a submenu giving you the option to cancel this action or delete the clock.
This way if your traveling you can remove irrelevant clock clutter when you don't need them anymore.
