Flickering in photos...

Hello - I know I have approached this before, I had asked about pictures 'flickering' when given keyframes in Motion - I was told to apply the Flicker filter and to set it on Minimum. It still seems to flicker though - what is causing this? Should I try another filter, like De-Interlace? It seems to do it on a lot of the pictures - ok, thanks!

The flickering you see is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of either very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text/ titling or scanned images with a great deal of detail in high contrast. (Note: It does no good to import images hugely larger than the necessary pixel dimensions of the video sequence. All it does is force FCP to work harder at interpolation.)
As the alternate fields play, the offending element is essentially being turned on/off creating the impression of a flicker. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays and/or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
° (in FCP) field order>none
° (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
° (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
° (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
° (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
° (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned or still images.
One neat trick is to use the selection tool to limit area you apply the vertical and/or gaussian blur to only the troublesome part rather than indiscriminately soften the entire thing.
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
good luck.

  • Parts of image flickers on photos

Parts of an image flickers on photos after burning dvd. I made a Movie using imovie 08 with 2mp photos. Used ken burns effect. Some vertical and horizontal lines may flicker, e.g. roof tops, railings, etc. Not all photos have this result. Do not notice it when viewing full screen on imovie where I made the movie. Is this the old dot crawl problem or a refresh rate issue? I used pinnacle ultimate on an old pc and did not have this issue on the final dvd product.

That flicker is common with the Ken Burns effect. Importing your photos in with the Ken Burns effect turned on seems to help a bit, but won't totally get rid of it. Usually you notice it more on the iMovie preview playback than on the final product, which, however, does not seem to be your case. I can't recall offhand the tech explanation, but someone on this formum can tell you that.
On the Apple website you can buy Photo to Movie, which is an app that purportedly has a smooth Ken Burns type zooming effect together with a lot of other good slide show effects. Photomaggico is another good plug-in app. Both work well with iMovie.

  • Mouse/Trackpad/Trackpoint acceleration: How to get it right?

I fail to get the acceleration for my mouse, trackpad and trackpoint right. It seems like having 100 interdependent knobs and trying to find some secret combination of values.
I decided to use xset and xinput. For example:
    xset m 5 1
    xinput --set-prop 'device1' 'Device Accel Profile' 2 # Polynomial
xinput --set-prop 'device1' 'Device Accel Constant Deceleration' 3
xinput --set-prop 'device1' 'Device Accel Adaptive Deceleration' 2
xinput --set-prop 'device1' 'Device Accel Velocity Scaling' 5
    ... 'device2' ...
    ... 'device3' ...
After having tried a bazillion of different values in different combinations, I'd be extremely glad to receive a KISS recipe on how to get it right.

    Hi Hickrock,
    1) Your material is 16 by 9 - drop a Compressor preset on there and it will recognise this and encode 16 by 9 which DVDSP will then recognise. Not sure how you got 4 by 3 in there unless you manually changed it to this.
    2) Get a bitrate calculator (Google it) and calculate the maximum allowable bitrate - depends on length and type of audio. I generally never use CBR and haven't noticed the difference.
    3) I usually get flickering on photos and graphics which I overcome with gaussian blur. Your flickering might be something to do with fields - try setting field dominance in Compressor to none rather than auto. Also switch on Frame Controls.
This was just a fairly quick answer, there is more to it and I'm sure others will chime in.
I personally have been having issues with Compressor - very good quality but occasional odd pixellation. The only reliable solution I have found, and it has been much discussed on this forum, is to use the Cinemacraft MP plugin.
    Good luck

  • 1080p to SD DVD - how to get it right?

    Hi,
I need to create a DVD out of a 86 minute show cut on a Media Composer. End result will be a SD DVD that will go out to a copy house, who will create the copies for us from a glass master. The producer is not sure at the moment, whether to use a dual layer DVD for both the main film and the bonus material, or two dual layer DVDs, as that would mean a more relaxed bit budget would be in order. Material is 1080p25 and encoded DNxHD 120 MXF.
At the moment, we export the sequence to a QT film, ProResHQ codec, then let compressor encode the resulting file. Squeeze crashes, and any other export option on the Avid, too. A bug, but there we go. ProRes looks jolly good, anyway.
    1) I am a bit puzzled now, what settings I should use in Compressor. Using a 4:3 aspect ratio, I get a 720x576 (PAL-land) file that is anamorphic.
Using the 16:9 aspect ratio, I get 720x404 files. Which is the better option, seeing as in DVDSP I choose 16:9 letterbox for the track.
    2) Also, I have so far stuck to CBR at a setting of around 6.2 MBps, but those were shorter projects. A long time ago, VBR seems to have produced artifacts, so I stuck to CBR ever since. Is VBR a better option on such a long project? And what bit rates might be advisable to use?
    3) On some scenes, where there are fine structures like pebbles on the ground, I get some kind of a flickering effect. I remember reading somewhere that people import HD films into FCP and apply a small amount of channel blur before sending the film to compressor. Is that a good idea?
Any thoughts or criticisms are welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Colin

  • Flickering photos

I have been working on a movie project for a few days. It is a mix of photos and video. It was working really well, and then all of a sudden, there is a white flickering in the photo transitions. Now, every photo transition has an annoying flicker, like a brief strobe light. I don't know why this has occurred.
I have turned the computer off and restarted, I have emptied trash, I have closed all other applications, and I still get flickering. This is URGENT as the video is for a function this week. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Further to this issue.....when I remove all the automated transitions that iMovie inserts between the photos, the flickering ceases. But when I did this, the transitions between the video clips crop some of the clips inappropriately!
Therefore, one must conclude that iMovie transitions contain a bug of some sorts!
If anyone knows how to fix this, your help would be appreciated.

  • IPod Photo 30GB: Screen flickers white light & No display.

The screen of my sister's ipod keeps on flickering with a plain white light, and there is still no display even though you plug it in an outlet or connect it to a pc.
Could this be a problem regarding the ipod's battery? Or something to do with the ipod's LCD? The ipod has been almost a year old. Hoping to hear from anyone...
    Thanks Alot

First make sure you have the latest ipod updater 06-28-2006. it can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
Now with the ipod disconnected from the PC, put it in "Disk Mode" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 open the ipod updater THEN connect the ipod to the PC and restore it. Restoring will wipe the ipod clean of everything and reinstall the ipods software.
If you have songs on the ipod that are not on the PC, Id suggest copying them to the computer before doing this if you can. If you need help doing that just say so and I or someone can step you thru it

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with Safari and Facebook. I'm a bit unclear on if the system information in your post is up-to-date (showing as running 10.6.8), but if you continue having issues loading Facebook in Safari, you may find the information and troubleshooting listed in the following article helpful, in particular the section for Webpages are garbled or hard to read:

  • IPad Mini Retina Display Intense Flickering Issue

Hi all, I've got an iPad Mini Retina 16 Gb iOS 7.1.2, I purchased at end of November 2013. Beginning yesterday, I had two incidents several hours apart where the display would suddenly start flickering like an old black and white TV set. First time it occurred I thought it may be an app issue/incompatibility as I had just downloaded an app from the App store.  I couldn't do anything with the device, so I held the on/off button down to do a hard shut down, I couldn't actually see the swipe bar to shut down but I swiped where it usually is and then shut the thing down. It was fine when I turned back on, so I just chalked it up to a one-time anomaly. About 3-4 hours later the same thing happened completely out of the blue. Did the same thing, intense gray scale flickering like an old b/w TV. Did a hard shut down again then turned back on and it was fine. Well it just happened again today which means the display flicker issue has now happened 3 times in the last 24 hours. I even took a photo of the display flicker with my iPhone so I'd have something to show someone at the Genius Bar.
Anyone else hear of this issue? If so, anyone know what causes it? I've resigned myself to a Genius Bar appt in the next day or two which hopefully means a quick swap with a replacement device. Input appreciated!

You can't downgrade the iOS level so forget about that. I doubt that this is due to iOS 8.
Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

    Help.

Then the next step would be to restore your phone.  My advice is that prior to restoring you import your photos and videos to your computer and back up your contacts (by syncing them with iCloud or to a supported program on your computer using iTunes) as a number of users report losing these when restoring their device.

  • Xorg + KVM switch = Flickering and artifacts

    Dear all,
I recently bought two small kvm switches produced by Digitus.
They are working fine when I use my Windows box but sadly it's another story with my Arch laptop. When I don't use the KVM switches my two displays a rendered fine. However when I plug the KVM switches I get some kind of flickering red/green/blue lines/pixels on the display, It's a bit tricky to describe so here is a photo (Here it is some green dot, but that might vary) :
As you might think, I am trying to get rid of those artifacts.

I had a look on the windows box and as far as I can tell the same mode is used 1920x1080@60Hz. I really have no idea of what's is going on, so far I can think of :
    - Something wrong with xorg
    - Something wrong with the i915 driver
    - The KVM cable armouring
    - Something else?!
    Any suggestion/remark/help is welcome
And please let me know if you need me to gather more information.

Hi, sorry for the delayed answer, I didn't have the time to update the topic yesterday evening.
Also, when you boot the Arch machine, do you have the kvm set to its port until from bootloader until X is up? I have an issue with resolution detection when I boot any Linux with my kvm set to another port. It's not artefacts, but it may be worth looking into.
During the entire boot process up to some point in the systemd init sequence my external screens are disabled either by using the KVM switch or not (When the KVM is used, the active port is set to the Arch box).
I have did some research yesterday and I am wondering if that might be caused by DDC?! I found this post on the Open Suze forums. The user seems to describe a simmilar issue but with another hardware.
I have been trying to disable DDC but unfortunately without success so far. By adding to the device section of Xorg (According the intel man page)
    Option "DDC" "false"
The option is simply ignored :
    1 dna@DNA-NOTEBOOK ~ % grep DDC /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 504.104] (WW) intel(0): Option "NoDDC" is not used
[ 505.189] (II) intel(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:
Is that because KMS has now become mandatory?
Could those artifacts be the actual DDC queries? or some signal corruption due to improper handling on the KVM switch?
    EDIT1:
Well according to the data sheet, this switch should support DDC with DDC2 Monitor. How can I found out which DDC version my monitor support? I can't find anything on the web for this model.
I am also contacting Digitus regarding this issue. I will keep this post updated.
    EDIT2:
I keep digging this stuff and I don't think it has to do with DDC for two reasons. First I can disable DDC/CI feature on my monitor. Sadly it didn't help. Still those artifacts. Second xrandr is able to read the EDID correctly. I am no expert but as I understand that's why DDC is meant for.
I have also noticed an interesting thing this afternoon. I was working remotely on a box via rdp but for some reason the artifacts was not rendered on the viewer. They stopped at the border ... Any idea?
    EDIT3:
I kept investigating this issue during the past weekend and I  think it's related to the intel driver. First I have tested the switch with 2 others machines. The first one was running a dual boot with windows 8 and arch. Both OS detected and rendered the display correctly (On windows the latest catalyst driver was used and on arch the open source radeon driver). The second setup however produced the same display corruption (As the picture in the first post) and was also running the intel driver but on a HD 3000 serie graphic chip.
Secondly I noticed (happend only once) a couple of messages in the xorg log :
    [ 40264.490] (EE) intel(0): sna_mode_redisplay: page flipping failed, disabling CRTC:3 (pipe=0)
    [ 40264.490] (EE) intel(0): sna_mode_redisplay: page flipping failed, disabling CRTC:5 (pipe=1)
I have tried rolling back to uxa + disabling triple buffer but sadly the issue remain.
I was not able to replicate the above messages. Here follows 2 xorg log. Maybe that someone has an idea?!

  • Flickering problem on screen - 3000 series N200 laptop

    Hello!
I have a 3000 series N200 laptop (0769 type) for 3 years. Approximately 3 months ago, there was a screen problem that the screen had white vertical gridlines. Service replaced the chipset of the graphical card.
Yesterday, a flickering problem has been appeared. I updated bios and display drivers from below link.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?
Could not get a solve with those updates. Then, I dismounted the front cover of screen. Re-assembled the LVDS FFC cable of the LCD display a couple of times, problem continued. Then, re-assembled the inverter cables. It also did not provide a solution.
    >See the problem photo (1.jpg) at below link.
    https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BweTh37k3ZRSQWYxRFNIWWpGSFE
    Please advise about this matter.
    Thanks.

Hello suguz and welcome to community,
As you have already updated the video driver and BIOS then you can check with adjusting the monitor refresh rate to 60Hrz.
Kindly check the same issue in BIOS mode and if issue continues then it might fault with Lcd display.
    Best Regards,
    Tanuj

  • How do I transfer data from an old Powerbook G4 w/non working screen to my 2008 iMac. I want to save my photo collection.

I have an old G4 Powerbook that has suddenly lost it's screen. It just flickers at times. I want to get the iPhoto data with lots of pictures out of the G4 and onto my 2008 iMac. I have no idea how to network these two and it is complicated by the loss of screen on the laptop. I know the laptop is up and running after I TURN IT ON BECAUSE WHEN THE SCREEN DOES IT'S FLICKER ON AND OFF BIT I CAN SEE THE DESK TOP. HOWEVER, THESE FLICKERS ARE SO BRIEF I CANNOT PERFORM any TASKS (woops) on the laptop. Help???

I will post my experience just in case someone else has this problem. John was right about the Firewire cable being the 800 9 pin job for both my PB G4 (2003 version) and my iMac (2008 version). Even though there was no screen to look at on the PB I was able to get into the target disk mode by first hooking up the firewire cable to my iMac and then the PB, then, holding down the "T" key on the PB I started it up. The iMac was already up and running.
It took several seconds but eventually a target disc icon for my PB showed up on the desktop of my iMac. Double clicking on the icon let me have access to all that was in the PB.
Sort of and here is where it got dicey. My PB and iMac do not run the same OSX versions, the PB being pretty old. Additionaly the cause of my concern was my wife's photos stored in some obscure location on the PB and using an old version of iPhoto which did not mesh at all with my iMac version.
After a bit of poking about and trying different work arounds I got lucky and a info box poped up saying that the data needed to be upgraded to be read by my newer version of iPhoto. Long storey short I went down this path and got everything transfered to the iMac. Just not sure how I got on that path, but I did.

  • Ken Burns effect flickering in idvd

Finally have a decent burned dvd after much trouble BUT where ever I have used the Ken Burns effect, on still photos and adding titles, the clip flickers. Like little vibrations. Totally unacceptable. What has caused this? Anyone have this problem? Help!

OK.... So I am now trying to burn some copies in idvd >onestep dvd from movie - which i have done before with no trouble. Yesterday every time i tried to do this ( 3 times), less than halfway thru processing (or encoding) it just stopped. I finally quit idvd. I have 16 Gb available in HD and shouldn't that be enough for a 20 minute film?
Another thing. Shouldn't I be able to play the other dvds i have burned on my computer? Neither one of them will read when inserted. They play fine on my dvd player. And movies i have bought play fine on my computer. ???? So today i bought a dvd lens cleaner and even that won't read when inserted. The salesman at the store that sells Macs where i live told me this morning that my burned dvds would not play on my imacG4 because it did not have the new processor. Is that true? Again, thanks for your help and advice. I have learned much from you!
