Flip Video camcorder and iPhone

Can anyone explain why video that's shared by email via the camera's Flipshare to iPhone cant be played back on the iphone ?? Can this issue be overcome...if so, how ?

I've read some information about this Flipshare and in the FAQ on their website, they discuss the conversion of video to be used on iPhone. This is the FAQ page http://www6.nohold.net/CiscoFlip/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=a17966a625d9480c806d615f40f d45edConverting_videos_into_iPod_or_iPhone_compatibleformats.xml&pid=2&respid=0&snid=2&dispid=0&cpage=search
I also tried to read about this share via email. I'm not sure that even when you email that it is converting the file. If you are emialing the file, even when in H.264 format that is is changing the extension. I think it is a .mov instead of a MPeG4. From what I could read about the app, you are supposed to post video to the Flip website and the app recognizes it is there and you can view it from the phone. Again, I'm not sure it supports emailing the video. You may need to ask this question of the app developer.

The Flip Video Camcorder. Simple and cheap for my kids. Can it be used with Mac? Will it open in iMovie?

My MAC Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie, and then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOV files but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and longer time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVI files had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than the MOV movie. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. Flip says Apple is aware of the problem.
My MAC PowerPc G4 has performed well in the past two months when working with the Flip Video camera. So, at Flip Video’s suggestion I upgraded the operating system to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. Flip Video says their camera works with OS 10.5. Once OS 10.5 was uploaded I soon discovered that iMovie 08 would not operate on my PowerPc G4, 1.86 MHz. The speed requirement for iMovie 08 is 1.9 GHz.
At this point of “spinning my wheels for nearly a month” with this Flip Video camera, I decided to purchase a new iMac. On May 2, 2008, I walked out of the Apple Store in Walnut Creek with the new iMac 20-inch: 2.66GHz. Now the Flip video camera should work and all my video problems solved. However, this was not to be.
When I attempted to Import Flip Video AVI and MOV files into iMovie 08 the files were “grayed out” and would not Import. None of my previous Flip Video files would Import. I tried making new Flip Video movies, they also would not Import into iMovie 08.
At another Apple Store, the tech suggested I download the previous version of iMovie HD. I did this and with hours of working through the different Export options I was able to create movies to post again on youTube. However, the picture quality of the newer iMovies has never approached the quality of my last post before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. Remember my problems started with QT 7.4.5. Well, my new iMac came with QT 7.4.1, I have not Uploaded QT 7.4.5 and won’t until Flip Video fixes this problem.
Examples of my Flip Video movies can be viewed on youTube at: sffoggydays. The last video with excellent picture quality was posted 6 Apr 2008 titled “A Day at the San Francisco Zoo, Chapter Nine, L-Taravel Ride to BART.” This video was made in iMovie and Exported before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. All the youTube Flip Videos made after 6 Apr 2008 have poor picture quality.
It is time for Flip Video camera to stop “passing the buck” to Apple. When manufactures of operating system such as Apple and Microsoft create newer and upgraded systems, it is the responsibility of the manufactures of applications to redo the programs for operating on the new systems. Here is where Flip Video is not accepting this responsibility to Mac users of their camera. The Flip Video application/codex/drivers need to be updated in order to fix the following problems:
    - No sound on AVI files in QT 7.4.5
    - No Import of AVI and MOV files in iMovie 08
    - Poor picture quality for youTube in Export of iMovie HD
I like my Flip Video camera, want to continue making movies for youTube, and recommending the camera to others. The Flip Video camera people need to fix these problems for Mac users.

  • Iphone video creation and iphone freeze

I have and Iphone 3G S running in OS 4.0.0. Yesterday, I was taking a video with the original software of Iphone (no third party applications for camera are installed in my Iphone), then when I was ten minutes recording continuously, suddenly appears the logo of the apple, and appears the slide control to unlock it. I slide it and then appears the apple again and the slide control again. This occurs continuously for four times. I decided to wait for ten minutes ant try to startup again. Thus goes almost well, but when I insert pin-code, appears me a message that the icons in my desktop couldn´t be loaded and my configuration settings (tones, bright etc) where reseted to default. It could be referred to the amount of time recording continuously a video file or for the new version OS 4.0.0?

my phone will freeze up a lot as well. also its really annoying when the keyboard goes through a lag scheme. i have noticed that i rarely give this phone a nap. i keep it on 24/7. power it down for a night and usually that does the trick for me. also clear cookies, history, cache, recent calls etc... hope this works for you like it did for me. not sure if this is the correct fix but it works for me for a while. when the phone acts up i do it again. very similar to cleaning up a computers hard drive.

  • Using My Digital Video Camcorder and Quicktime...any Help???

I recently purchased a digital camcorder that I am trying to get to work with my Mac. I also just purchased Quicktime 7.0.4 PRO which I am hoping can convert the files from my camcorder to a viewable Mac format.
I am using OSX 10.4.6. The camera is a DXG-305 and the software written for the camera is for PC only. When I connect the camera to my Mac I get a folder to pop up of whatever I have captured but it shows files that are in a .ASF format. When I click on the file to try to open it , it wants to open in Microsoft Windows. When I go into Quicktime PRO and under File try to "Open File"- the file does not even become highlighted or selectable? Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open? If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac? Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO? I am looking for ANY solution to this dilemma? Thank you-
    John

Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open?
Yes. Your camera's native video format is MPEG-4 and appears to possibly be "muxed" with MP3 audio.
If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac?
Try installing the free Flip4Mac component. Then try playing the .asf file in the QT Player.
Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO?
If your file plays using the Flip4Mac player component, you may then wish to consider purchasing full conversion codec which will allow you to export your DXG-305V files to any frame-to-frame synchronized QT compatible format in QTPro.
ADDED: Sorry about the duplication, too slow with my response.

  • Video clips and iPhone

Have taken many pictures which look good on the iPhone but, does anyone know how i can get the video clips i took with my camera to show? They show fine in iPhoto but nada in the iPhone....!
    TIA

The videos must be converted to an iPod/iPhone format.
Have you imported the video clips into iTunes?
If the video clips can be viewed in iTunes (they should if they can be viewed in iPhoto) but do not transfer to your iPhone after being selected under the Videos tab for your iPhone sync preferences, iTunes includes an option to convert selection for iPod/iPhone. Follow this by selecting the converted video to be transferred to your iPhone.
If this doesn't work, there are 3rd party conversion utilities for this purpose.

  • IMovie 8 and Flip Video Cameras

From reading previous posts, I see that iMovie 8 does not automatically convert video formats as did previous versions.
I am having difficulties importing Flip Video video files into iMovie 8. I am wondering if anyone has a simple answer to the question, if I have Quicktime Pro, what format should I save the Flip Video files in, so they will import into iMovie 8 (Flip Video video format: Advanced Profile MPEG4 AVI)
I've managed to do it once, but can't retrace my steps...To be argumentative, if iMovie 8's appeal is for a quick video for YouTube, Web, why did they make it so difficult to import video clips, my opinion, that should be the easy part!
Thanks for your help and suggestions

  • Flip Video camera & problems with iMovie 08

If you are having problems with iMovie and Flip Video, here is the Flip Video email response on 27 May 2008:
    Hello,
    Thank you for your response.
We are not authorized to support third party applications, which is why we do not provide specific instructions regarding iMovie or any other third party application. We only support the Flip and the Flip program, while offering suggestions regarding other programs.
The Apple website also offers Perian as a workaround regarding audio on the Tiger operating system with the latest QuickTime. The latest QuickTime upgrade didn’t allow for audio playback of AVI files, which is why Perian is now offered as a work around by us and by Apple.
It seems as though you are able to playback your videos, as well as use them in outside applications. If this is not the case, and you are having issues using your Flip video or your Flip video program, feel free to contact us further.

    Hi!
    I agree 100%!
I also purchased the Flip Video - was thrilled to see that they worked with Apple computers. I made several movies with it when I had my PowerBook G4. I went on a great vacation & took several once in a lifetime videos. Got home & couldn't wait to put them in my iMoive -06, burn them on my iDVD and sent them to several family members & friends. Before I got the chance, I had my system updater tell me that there was a new version to QT. GREAT, I thought, just in time for my vacation videos. Like you, after the QuickTime upgrade, I got video, but no sound. I was SICK about it! I also wrote to the Flip people & got a response somewhat like yours. I left the videos on my Flip which left no room for any others, but I didn't want to take the chance of losing them. After reading from Flip that it would work with OS 10.5 system, I talked myself into getting a new MacBook Pro. Came with all the upgrades iLife -08 and the OS 10.5.2 OK...finally, after months of stressing over losing the vacation videos, I had all I needed to save them! Of course the $2,000.00 price tag hurt a bit, but I deserve a new computer.
Well...I STILL can't get my priceless vacation videos edited and burned! I tried downloading 2 different programs that were supposed to help convert my Flip movies to something that would work, but they haven't. I could get it to work on my desktop with QT, but what good is that?? I want to make DVD's to send to others & save for my grandkids (if I ever am lucky enough to get some!)
I'm TOTALLY disgusted & feel I've wasted my money on the Flip Camera (that at one time I loved & was seriously considering giving them as gifts) the $2,000.00 on a new computer (that even though I do deserve, didn't REALLY need one yet!) AND I still have vacation videos that I can't share!
So... I agree! Flip should honor their word that is printed on the box & MAKE it work with all Apple computers. Surely they can find a fix!
TOTALLY disgusted with the whole FLIP/APPLE mess!
Oh, Flip also said they 'heard' that QuickTime Pro would work with iMovie -08 - although they haven't actually tested it themselves. NO THANKS!!! I've got WAY too much money invested in this stupid Flip camera!

Flip video ( I just bought one) makes AVI files (AVI is a container like QT is one) using 3ivX. All you need is the free Perian codec and you can playback, edit etc. Export the to a MOV container which doesn't reencode them and you should have usable files.
They have a valid point - they supply software and they have no obligation to make their camera work in iMovie. Reviews I have read say it works OK in IM6 vs. the iLife 08 version. Note that QT doesn't work natively with DivX, WMV and you don't see Apple saying they are obligated to fix Quicktime. They like their codecs and they don't care about others any more than Flip does.
You can always open in MPEG Streamclip and export them to a non lossy codec like Animation and use those new QT files as well. Or DV as another format option.

  • Flip Video to FCP workflow

Hi all, I'm trying to import Flip HD to my 422 Pro Res (HQ) sequence. Tried converting the MP4 files to various Quicktime settings in Compressor but I still get a "choppy" or strobe-like playback. I've checked different forums and could not find a definitive solution.
    Anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Meg, sorry.
My sequence preset in FCP is Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1280x70 24p 48 kHz (shot from Pana AG-HMC-150 using 720/24p).
    Item properties on clips:
    Vid Rate: 23.98
    Frame Size: 1280 x 720
    Compressor: Apple ProRes 422
    Data Rate: 6.8 MB/sec
I shot some footage from the new Flip Video (HD) and was wanting to use a few for a documentary. Everything was fine until I imported the few (QT) conversion attempts to FCP and discovered them to stutter or have a mild "strobe-like" effect.
I just started to edit HD media to ultimately export them to 16:9 standard DVD.
Please advice on best work flow.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Video on 3G iphone

I noticed that my content is a little bit more choppy on the 3G than my original iphone. Could this be a coincidence or change in hardware? I have a dvd movies i used with handbrake's Apple Ipod setting.

I've copied 60 movies into iTunes with HandBrake using "Normal" format. Everything works fine on my AppleTV, video iPods, and iPhone 2G, however, when I try to sync with iPhone 3G it tells me the format cannot be played...
    Anyone else having this issue?

  • Stupid Question :) I took some video on my iphone but I did not flip the phone horizontally - have I screwed up the sizing and it will never import into imovie to edit it?

Stupid Question I took some video on my iphone but I did not flip the phone horizontally - have I screwed up the sizing and it will never import into imovie to edit it?

You can do this using Quicktime Pro 7:
Open MOV file in QT Pro (QT 7.6.6)
    Window -> Show Movie Properties
    select "Video Track"
select "Visual Settings" from lower window
    check "Preserve Aspect Ratio"
Click on appropriate rotation icon (MOV rotates!)
Click back on the open MOV in Player Window
    FILE -> Save
You can also do this using TransformMovie, available here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21859
Also, MPEG Streamclip can rotate video while maintaining the aspect ratio as well as the interlacing when converting to DV, which is what iMovie prefers as an input:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
There is also a plug-in for iMovie from GeeThree called rotate/scale that might do the job:

  • Importing Flip and iPhone clips into FCP

What is FCP's preferred video format?
I have a funky project consisting of clips from iPhone and a Flip Mino HD camera. When either of these are imported directly into FCP, they won't play without rendering, and any edit or trim "undoes" the render, forcing them to be rendered again... and again...
I'm guessing the best strategy is to convert them -- before importing -- to a format that FCP will like better and will play smoothly, without constant re-rendering.
So: what's the best format to convert them into, and what's the best tool for doing that pre-conversion?
Or am I wrong, and is there a way to handle these Flip and iPhone clips in FCP without pre-converting them?

Okay, that seemed to work. Thanks!
But now there's a new, odd problem: I can't add transitions! After dropping these new clips in the timeline, they play fine without rendering... but whenever I try to add a transition (dissolve, wipe, etc.) between clips, FCP changes the 1 second transition to a 3 frame transition. And there doesn't seem to be any way to change the duration - no matter what I do, it keeps changing back to one frame. Strangely, I can add the normal transition to the end of the sequence, but not between clips.
Am I missing something? Does the DVCPRO50 progressive format somehow prohibit modifications like transitions?

I have just bought a flip video. When I send a flip video attachment in an email the iPhone will not play the video. Is it possible to send someone an email with a flip video attachment so they can watch it on the iPhone just as I send an attached photo which always opens perfectly. THANK YOU.

The Flip doesn't store it's videos on a form the iPhone can play directly. Standard-resolution (640 x 480) videos from the Flip are in AVI format which the iPhone cannot play, and the high-resolution versions are not the correct resolution. Flip videos will need to be converted and then transferred to the iPhone. The format required for the iPhone can be found here:

(Caveat: I don't know if an iPhone can play any videos that have been received via email; someone else here will certainly know).

  • Can I send live camcorder video from my iPhone 4S to Apple TV Gen3 using AirPlay Mirroring?

Our bar band just purchased a couple TV sets to hang on light stands at our shows... we'd like to walk around with a handheld camcorder or iPhone and send that live video to the TV sets.   We are thinking of using an iPhone 4S and an Apple TV... connect the iPhone 4S to the Apple TV (Gen 3) via AirPlay Mirroring... then walk around the dance floor with the iPhone 4S using it's camcorder and display that live feed to the TV sets.
    Will this work?
Is there a better way?   The other option we were thinking would involve some kind of wireless video transmitter and receiver.
    TIA,

    Yes
Is there a better way?   More than likely your best solution would be commercial equipment, mirroring live images works fine around my home, but may not work so well in other environments. The iPhone also shows the camera controls, but then again that could be a desired effect.
