Flip4Mac (WMV Files? --- iMovie?)

I know Flip4Mac allows WMV files to play in quicktime, but can you export them into iMovie as another file type?
How can I take a WMV movie and edit it using iMovie? or Is it not possible? (Remember I'm new at this....)
-Thanks

Any help I can get with WMV files would be appreciated. This topic just really confuses me and the more that I read the more I seem to confuse myself.
Heres the main problem: The place that I am making a highlight film uses a PC and they do all their editing on it... I am starting to do more of the editing and I need to learn what my options are with my mac and wmv files.
When I attempt to open up [in quicktime on my macbook pro] the highlight film that was done on the PC, the files show up as: VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB... ? ---> Is there anyway to edit [using imovie] these files on my macbook pro? Do I need to save them a special way onto the disk from my PC? Is there software that I can buy to help me?
Remember that I'm new to this... Please don't give me a complicated answer...

  • How to use WMV files in Imovie?

I have a bunch of WMV files from Windows that I would like to use in iMovie. But, it keeps telling me they have to be .avi files in order to be used in iMovie. If someone could please advise how to convert these windows files to usable iMovie files that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert them to DV. This may require purchasing Flip4Mac.

  • Converting .WMV files to iTunes and iMovie 08 compatible files -- Possible?

I have QuickTime Pro for Windows (XP Home, SP3). I also have a MacBook Pro 17" notebook (OS X 10.5 Leopard) with iLife 08, an iPod Touch, and an iPhone 3G. I want to be able to view (and sometimes edit) -- on my MacBook Pro -- videos (with audio) that exist as .WMV files which I have downloaded from a friend's website to a Shared Folder on my PC (which is connected to my MacBook on a LAN). I'll probably break down and spend the $30 to upgrade QuickTime on my Mac to QuickTime Pro so that I won't have to work through a Shared Folder, but that's neither here nor there for the moment. What I wanted to do was to use QT Pro to convert the .WMV files to an Apple-compatible format, but it doesn't seem to be able to do that. It will go ahead and APPEAR to convert the file during Export, changing the file extension from .wmv to .mp4, for example, but the exported (converted?) file won't play in the QuickTime Player. I can press the Play button, and the marker moves as if the file were playing, but no movie appears on the screen and no audio is heard. Will I have to get third-party software to effect the conversion?

Purchase one of the upgrades and use QuickTime Pro (iMovie '08 is still not supported).

  • Important wmv / files converted from wmv to avi into imovie - PROBLEM!

    Hi there,
I feel like I'm going insane with this.
I had the same problem on '08 as I do on '09.
I make youtube videos and I am trying to open some clips that were edited on a PC by other youtube users (who have emailed them to me for a group project). They won't open in imovie. If I convert the file to .avi or .m4v or even .mp4 using Handbrake, they still won't import into imovie.
I don't know what to do and there aren't that many threads about this online.
The closest I've got is this information I found on one thread:
iMovie '08 will only allow you to to import files containing compression formats that can be edited. If your AVI file won't import, it likely means that the audio and/or video data is not editable. To import it, you will have to first convert it to any of the acceptable compression formats. For video this means DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264.
    Can anyone help me?
I've wasted such a lot of time on this.
I have Flip4Mac (free) and I can't export a wmv file on it unless I buy Quicktime Pro but I'm loathe to buy it on the offchance by converted file still won't open in imovie
I hope to hear from someone soon.
    Many thanks,
    Emily

Hi Em and welcome to the forums!
On this one issue I may be able to help:
I have Flip4Mac (free) and I can't export a wmv file on it unless I buy Quicktime Pro
Nope, QT Pro does not export to wmv, but the PAID FOR version of Flip4Mac does that conversion!

Files look grey so can not highlight .
Trieed to open in Qicktime and save as Mov. Stil could not have Imovie accept it when i draged or tried to import
Flipmac suggested i also download imovie 0.6 but cant find it on apples support page. only 06 updates.
    Any one who can help?

    have installed flipmac pro
Do you have the latest Flip4Mac update installed with the QT 7.2 fix?
Trieed to open in Qicktime and save as Mov.
The "Save As..." QT Pro File menu option only places the current audio and video compressed data in an MOV file container. It does not re-compress the data to a fully support QT compression format. Try converting the file to DV, MJPEG, H.264, etc. instead.

  • I made Flip4Mac work on my intel iMac (plays wmv files)

I haven't seen this posted yet ... if it has been, sorry about being redundant.
    Here's what you do :
    - Download Flip4Mac ... it'll show up on your desktop.
    - Control-click on it and select "show package contents"
    - Double click on the "contents", then "Resources" folder
    - Then double click on "Flip4Mac Quicktime components.pkg" to install
    - Before you run quicktime ... do a "get info" on quicktime and check the open in roseta box.
Then run quicktime ... and it all works

Here are a couple more specifics to get wmv files to play on new iMac with Flip4mac:
After you've downloaded and installed Flip4Mac (and updgraded to Max OSX 10.4.5):
In your Applications folder: highlight QuickTime; go to "File" drop down menu and click "Get Info"; check the Rosetta box.
Then do the same thing in your Apps folder for Safari.
You then need to restart your computer. This is what worked for me. Thanks.

  • Convert wmv file to a format iMovie can use

How do i convert the wmv file that i have imported from my PC to mac into a format that iMovie can use? And which is the best file format? why can i play the file but not import it to iMovie?

Winston has got good advise. The F4M free download allows you to play wmv and it will even allow you to convert them, however, only in a limited way. To get full functioning, you have to purchase a license. However, if you do this a lot, then it could be worth it.
I found the following info on this forum about compatible files:
iMovie '08 will only allow you to to import files containing compression formats that can be edited. If your AVI file won't import, it likely means that the audio and/or video data is not editable. To import it, you will have to first convert it to any of the acceptable compression formats. • Downloaded Flip4Mac and still can't get WMV file online to play - help!!

I downloaded Flip4Mac and still can't get this WMV file (http://www.bis.doc.gov/asfroot/snapr-webinar-12-19-2007.wmv) to play - no sound and no video. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

MSS2 is Windows Media Video Screen codec which, as noted, does not play on Mac with Flip4Mac or anything else I know of. You'll also fine Windows Media Video Image and those coming from PhotoStory won't play on Mac at all either. Not even the ancient WMP9Mac will play those.

  • How to make WMV files open in in Windows Media Player not Flip4Mac/QT

I just installed Safari 4. With Safari 3 when I clicked on a WMV file on a web site it would automatically open in Windows Media Player. I liked this arrangement just fine. When I installed Safari 4, instead of this happening WMV files started to download instead. I installed Flip4Mac and now they play in QuickTime but I don't like the controls... i.e. I cannot adjust the volume except from the keyboard.
Is there any way to make WMV files open in Windows Media Player the way they used to in Safari 3 instead of either downloading or opening in QuickTime with Flip4Mac?

Not very easy but it could be done.
If the file opens in QuickTime (via Flip4Mac) you can use the Movie Inspector window to "find" the URL. Then open that URL directly in WMP.
You could also dig through the page source code or use the Safari Activity window to find the URL.

I used to be able to view .wmv files before OSX update version 10.7.4.  Right now I get sound only using either Quich Time or Flip4Mac.  Is there a fix for this issue?  What else should I try?  Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

  • I have found that iMovie stalls when converting a wmv file

and when it does work, it takes way to long to complete the 2step process.
Is there a solution to my problem?
    Thanks,

    Hi
iMovie usually can not use .wmv files.
.wmv - is no Video-Codec - but a container and can hold a variety of codecs - most of them in need to be converted to a Codec iMovie can use.
If it opens in QuickTime-player, then open Inspector [cmd+I] and read
    - Video formatted as (Codec) : nnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
    - Frames per second : yyyyyyy
    What does it read ?
    Yours Bengt W

I am trying open 'mv' files.  I found a program called Flip4mac MWV Player Pro.  Does anyone have experience with this or is there a different way to open these type of files?

It works quite well, but is only useful for playing .wmv files such as those made on older PCs. MPlayer 1.0 rc2 is a free utility that should also play .wmv files.
