Floating pictures in CS4

I hate CS4 with a passion. When I had regular CS, I could open my images, they'd all float without me having to tell the software to do so. Who would want to be able only to view what, 6 or 8 images at a time in the tab type of view, before having to go to a drop down list to see other photo numbers and not even the photos, to jump to another photos? Either I'm using the non-floating view wrong, or it's a retarded feature.
To make matters worse, when you are floating all the images, they're all shown on my screen about the size of a 5x7 (even though the file size is 8x10 or whatever). If you dare to maximize an image to full screen, it covers up all your tool choices (file, edit, view, filters, etc.). How stupid is that????? You can only drag the edges of the image to make it bigger for each and every picture, then it often times wants to go back to that stupid tab view as it attaches to another photo. Very, very annoying.
Is there any way to simply maximinze the image (I'm talking about the choice in the upper right hand of all images, the "_ O X", with the minimize, maximize, or X to close), and still have your file, edit, view, select, filters, etc. options? I don't think there's a way to do it.

No, I didn't mean control O.  On the upper right box of every window
to close a program, or at the upper right of every picture, are 3 choices, the middle one being a square box. I couldn't type a square
box, so I put in the next closest thing, an O.
_  = minimize
O (the square box) = maximize
X = close

  • Floating picture

    Picture box is positioned correctly in design mode, but changes coordinates in preview and when viewed live online, different everytime page is opened.

    Interesting…by grouping the floating picture with the ones in correct location, it moved all the correct ones with the floating picture.
    I have since rebuilt the page with no problems.
    Thanks, Greg

  • Replacing text on a picture with CS4

    I have recently taken a (jpg) picture of a real estate sign and I have been asked to replace the agent's first name with another first name. Can this be done with CS4? How? Thanks in advance. HK

    It can be done with any version of Photoshop.
    Sample the background color of the sign behind/around the text you're replacing, then use that color to paint over the text. Then type the new text and size/skew it to fit the space on the sign.

  • Why wont panel float into ID CS4 document window?

    I have a strange situation arise in last several weeks. The toolbar and the panels will float but grey out when over the document window. If released they disappear and can be found on the Windows screen, not in the ID window where they should be. Panels will expand OK but its very frustrating not to be able to place them on the document window. I am using Windows 7 64 bit and ID has been updated to 6.0.5. Interestingly I downloaded the trial version of Design Suite 5 Premium and installed it. InDesign 5  is dispalying the same errors - I assume it picked up the plug-ins and preferences from ID CS4?
    Any ideas or solutions anyone?

    Thanks Peter
    I'll play around with the monitors. I have two monitors both running at native resolution (one 24" Samsung (1900 x 1200) and a 19" HP (1280 x 1024) set as an extended desktop. As far as I know no settings for them have changed but I'll try going back to a single monitor.
    As the problem does not exist on the other programs (Photoshop, Illustrator) that float panels it seems to be something in InDesign's coding is causing the problem and maybe reacting with  video settings. Strange as I have used InDesign CS4 since it was released with no problem up until a few weeks ago.
    If I create two document windows and float one off onto the other monitor then the toolbar and panels can be transferred onto the document on the 2nd monitor no problem but 'fall through' the document remaining in the program! By clicking reset Advanced Workspace they are recovered.
    I tried to uninstall CS4 but the uninstall program hangs so I have to work out why?
    Thanks for your help - I am sure the answer lies out there somewhere

    Here is a quote from a longtime and dedicated Apple OS user.
    "The warning will be helpful to others, though it boggles the mind to read that someone who uses CS5, or any version of Photoshop, would want to bother with iPhoto—ever.
    The "problem" is not Bridge's but Apple's iPhoto.  It is iPhoto that hides your images in packages."

  • InDesign CS4 memory problems

    I have had memory problems with InDesign CS4 (and also with Photoshop CS4) for about a year now. If my file has a lot of pictures (100+) at some stage I get error message "Out of memory" . In the beginning it just have problems with redraw pictures (half of picture stays black), but also export to pdf is halted by same message and printing to file also. No problems in the beginning of large files or with files with text only. At one point InD just has enough and starts to behave like a ... Only solution is to export InD CS4 file as INX and continue to work in CS3 (but it takes a long time to match the text flow because textengine works differently). It's not monitor, because I have changed monitor during this year (from LaCie 22 blue IV to EIZO 27"). It seems that it's not video (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX, 512 MB) also, because everything functions normally with CS3. I know, that it's not a proper video card for my work, but one likes to play Bioshock sometimes... Something strange happens with Photoshop CS4 also when I work for a long time without shutting down the program. After about editing 60+ pictures Photoshop CS4 begins to slow down (specially with using clone tool).up to impossible to work. You just have to wait while the cursor is dragging itself to right place an picture is redrawing itself. Seems like memory cannot empty itself and gets overloaded when working with CS4. No problems with Photoshop CS3. One cannot notice anything with small files. I can work with CS3 but there are features I would like to use in CS4.
    Have anyone experienced anything similar?

    CS4 and CS3

    Having exactly the same here. 16 Gb of ram in an 8 core 64 bits Vista system. Absolutely no infections on my system. Having great troubles getting my work ouputted.
    I'm making an overview with 50 cards with pictures in them and bevels on the edges, dropshadows. It might be heavy but it is a normal question from my client.
    I don't care if transparency is difficult for Adobe to handle. They shouldn't make it public if it is not properly tested. I am now so far as to make the composition in photoshop ( if that works)
    What I thought was the problem is that I originaly placed indesign files in frames. But there is a great script out there on www.automatication.com to convert that in  editable object again. Works great so check that out. But this didn't solve my problem. The effects used in these items are the memory consummers and Adobe is not freeing the memory properly.
    Advise to Adobe: check also to dropshadows feature because this is not scaling up or down with the rest of the effect.
    I'm am writing a realtime 3D renderengine here, if CS5 is not working fine, I might digg in to this one as well, getting a bit tired of waiting for properly working software.

  • Awful previews of Photoshop CS5 jpg's in InDesign CS4

    Since this week I have Photoshop CS5. I save my pictures as eps with jpg preview. These pics look absolutely awful in InDesign CS4... Very jagged and low res. The pictures I save with Photoshop CS4 look good in InDesign CS4. I posted about this in the Photoshop forum and there someone said this is a bug in InDesign, "some sort of metadata parsing failure" and I had to go to this forum for more information about that.
    Is there anything I can do to get better looking previews? Is this a known bug? Something Adobe can fix? I feel almost forced to use Photoshop CS4 again for saving my pictures...

    Yes, I am using typical diplay, but the Photoshop CS4 pictures look fine with that in InDesign (though obviously not as good as with high quality display). Working with high quality display all the time is impossible: InDesign gets way too slow with that (with the designs I am working on).
    After noticing how bad Photoshop CS5 pictures look in InDesign CS4, I saved the exact same picture with Photoshop CS4 (exact same settings of course) and that pictures looks as I am used to. Somehow the Photoshop CS5 gives my bad looking previews in InDesign CS4... When I place both pictures (Photoshop CS4 and CS5) next to each other in the same InDesign CS4 document, you can CLEARLY see the difference.

  • Some CS4 on XP-32bit Questions and Issues

    Now that I have CS4 running on XP I'm trying to do some real work with it. First thing I do is disable tabbed windows and other new features as they have yet to prove themselves useful in my workflow. Perhaps I'll grow to appreciate them. But for now I'm just trying to get the app to work with the good ol' floating windows.
    1) Can I stop new images opening with a Window that's glued to the top left corner of my screen? Past versions of PS just opened a floating Window. CS4 obliges me to 'unstick' the Window from the top left corner every time I open a new image. I've scoured the preferences but have yet to find any way to turn off this feature.
    2) When grabbing the top bar of an open image window to move it on my screen I find it to be sluggish. With previous versions of PS one would grab the top of the image window and move it quickly on your screen to wherever you want. The response was pretty will instantaneous. With CS4 there seems to be a very slight lag whereby the move is occurring slightly behind the cursor moving it. It's not a huge lag. Just enough to get the sense that there's something amiss. I'll try it in Vista64 to see if the same thing is occurring there.

    RE floating windows, (have to assume this is a bug)
    I too find it unexpected behavior that despite unchecking in CS4 Preferences / Interface the Enable floating document window docking and Open documents as tabs , a new image ALWAYS opens docked to the top left of the framed workspace.
    Things get even more puzzling if one has PS CS4 set as a window on part of the monitor area (Restored Down)- The new image will always be opened within that restored down window, and in my case it is a microscopic dot on the screen.
    You can drag the new image away from the framed workspace to another area of the monitor, and enlarge it with a mouse wheel or the zoom tool, but should you use the keyboard shortcuts of CTRL + +, or CTRL + -, or CTRL + 0, the image window immediately snaps back into the framed document window, and that is not good.
    Another unexpected behavior in CS4 is the doing away with the right-click context menu on the top bar of an open image. In previous PS versions that brought up a very useful menu that included Image Size; Canvas; etc. That is gone.
    What I really love in CS4 is the new Adjustments Panel, and once Configurator is made available, I will be able to configure the interface to my liking.

  • Pages 5.2.2 made a disaster of my Pages 09 documents

    I updated to Pages 5.2.2 like a good little Apple-head, and when I opened a large, heavily formatted document to work on it, I got the dreaded "the following changes have been made to your document" message. Worse, all the hours and hours of formatting that went into creating that document are shot to h---. It looks like someone took all the text and graphic elements, threw them in a blender, and then tossed them back randomly onto the pages.
    Page breaks, floating pictures, tables, and text boxes are strewn about like confetti. It would honestly be faster to start from scratch — in a better app — than to go back and fix all the f---ups.
    Since I am on the road, I can't apply the fix I'm planning, but when I get home I will unless someone has a better idea. My fix is to connect my Time Machine HD and restore the previous version of Pages. I have already turned off automatic updates, and I will be sure to employ an abundance of caution before authorizing any future ones.
    Does anyone know of another solution that I could perform in a hotel room far from my home office?
    My computer is a mid-2010 15-inch MacBook Pro with 4 GB RAM and 40GB disk space remaining.

    You should still have iWork '09 on your computer, moved to the Applications/iWork folder.
    Don't save your file/s and they should still be good.
    Pages 5 is an ongoing trainwreck. Almost 12 months on and it is still full of bugs and missing over 110 features. Best avoided.

  • Apple TV: Music Visualizer (Like iTunes) or Alternative Screen Saver?

    Hello, I am wondering if there is any way to get a "Visualizer" for my Apple TV, like iTunes has that is basically a screen saver that wavers with the pitch and beat of the music. Similar to those on Windows Media Player, xBox 360, PS3, etc... Or is there at least a way to get/buy an alternative "Screen Saver" besides the floating pictures?
    If not, that is a serious design flaw that someone should have thought about before release. I mean, come on, a unit that is designed to be hooked up to your TV and play music? You need to have something visual and floating pictures are not only boring but borderline annoying. I have to believe it is an easy fix with a software update; I mean, everyone else has managed to incorporate one into their products as I mentioned above and **** iTunes even has its own Visualizer, and in my humble opinion, rivals only windows media player in top quality. There has to be a way to at least stream it like AirTunes streams the music iTunes is playing to the Apple TV that plays it out the speakers it is hooked up to; with G protocol you could easily add a video stream that would stream the iTunes visualizer to the Apple TV and display it on the TV.
    Anyway, just thoughts, if anyone cares, not really upset with the product, in fact, I love it so much I'm thinking of proposing to it soon (it has no idea). I just REALLY wish I could throw up a sick Visualizer on my Samsung 60" 240hz LED TV to go along with my music...SOS! Help!
    Thank you.

    no - the "visualiser" is not an option on the appletv.
    you only have the screensaver options.

  • Namespace in xml element

    I have an xml file tagged with namespaces:
    for example, ce:section, ce:para
    i just trying to collect the 'ce:floats' xml nodes by using the following code:
    //Defining the Namespace in the array of arrays of 2 strings
    Dim NmSpArr(,) As String = {{"sb", "http://www.elsevier.com/xml/common/struct-bib/dtd"}, {"cl", "http://xml.cengage-learning.com/cendoc-core"}, {"ce", "http://www.elsevier.com/xml/common/dtd"}, {"aid", "http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/4.0/"}, {"aid5", "http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/5.0/"}, {"xmlns:xsi", "http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"}, {"xmlns:mml", "http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"}, {"xmlns:xlink", "http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"}}

    Suresh:
    Is there anyone know any alternative methods to collect the xml nodes with namespaces?
    Again, I wrote:
    But it shouldn't be too much work to just traverse the tree.
    Here's an example in JavaScript. It should be easy to translate it into VB. Of course all you need is the traverse() function -- the rest is just examples and test cases:
    (function() {
      var
        x = app.activeDocument.xmlElements[0],
        star, all, floats, cefloats, anyfloats;
        function traverse(t, p) {
            var r = [], i;
            if (p(t)) {
                r = r.concat(t);
            for (i=0; i<t.xmlElements.length; i++) {
                r = r.concat (traverse(t.xmlElements[i], p));
            return r;
        function dumplist(l) {
            var i,
                rv = [];
            rv.push("has "+l.length+" elements:");
            for (i=0; i<l.length; i++) {
                rv.push("  "+i+"\t"+l[i].toSpecifier()+
                    "\t"+l[i].markupTag.name);
            return rv.join("\n");
      star = x.evaluateXPathExpression("*");
      all = traverse(x,
          function() { return true; }
      floats = traverse(x,
           function(n) { return n.markupTag.name==="float"; }
      cefloats = traverse(x,
          function(n) { return n.markupTag.name==="ce:float"; }
      anyfloats = traverse(x,
          function(n) { return n.markupTag.name.match(/float$/); }
      $.writeln("star: "+dumplist(star));
      $.writeln("all "+dumplist(all));
      $.writeln("floats "+dumplist(floats));
      $.writeln("cefloats "+dumplist(cefloats));
      $.writeln("anyfloats "+dumplist(anyfloats));
    So, if you run this on a document with an XML schema like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
    <Root>
      <ce:float>A</ce:float>
      <ce:float>B</ce:float>
      <float>AC</float>
      <float>Ad</float>
      <ce:float>Af</ce:float>
      <div>
        <ce:float>Ai</ce:float>
        <float>Ag</float>
      </div>
    </Root>
    It gives you this output:
    star: has 3 elements:
      0     /document[@id=1]/XML-element[@id=2]/XML-element[@id=5]     float
      1     /document[@id=1]/XML-element[@id=2]/XML-element[@id=6]     float

  • Firmware 1.0.3. = Dysfunctional Nano

    Hello Everyone,
    Upgraded to version 1.0.3 on my 1 month old 8gig Nano this morning... the results were rather poor. Battery no longer charges when plugged into the USB, and it resets automatically once it's disconnected from my Powerbook G4. Running the latest versions of iTunes and OSX, reset and reinstalled everything that Support recommends.
    So far it seems that this is just one of the problems with 1.0.3, as others are already 'popping up' on other forums. If your previous version of firmware is working fine for you, I would NOT recommend upgrading to 1.0.3.
    Looks like it's back to the store for a refund. Too bad...
    Al

    I think I agree with you. Maybe not with the click wheel sensitivity, but there's a general feel of sluggishness with 1.0.3.
    I think it might be something not releasing resources / CPU quickly: most obvious manifestation is that the scrolling song title in the "now playing" screen slows down, but I can easily demonstrate it by the effect on the right-side of menus:
    1) Start with a "sleeping" iPod (hold Play/Pause to turn off)
    2) Hit Play/Pause to turn on.
    3) Hold MENU to return to the main menu
    4) Note the right-side of the menu behaves as expected: nice panning photos / album art / clock etc
    5) Now start playing a video
    6) Hold MENU to return to the main menu
    7) Note the right-side of the menu is now a blank(ish) grey background, no matter what option you've selected
    8) Depending on how lucky you are, either the normal floating-pictures will re-appear on their own or you'll have to do something like start a tune playing and then going back to the menu to restore expected function.
    I should also note that the iPod feels slower to start/stop using the PLAY/PAUSE button too.
    In summary: I don't think they've adjusted anything with the Click Wheel itself, but since the Nano is generally feeling sluggish, the effects of using it make it act too sensitive....
    [Just a theory, just a theory....]
