Not without making native calls to the OS. Remember that these devices may be represented very differently on different platforms.

K7N2 - Ide, Floppy, Cd-rom, Cdrw?

For those who have *fully functional* K7N2 motherboards, what Ide and Floppy cables are you using and what Cd-Rom or Cdrw did you use to boot windows and or hd disk.

Spun have you stripped down your machine to the basics yet?
Install just what you need to boot the machine:
Processor
Motherboard
Memory (1 stick if you can do that)
Floppy
CDROM
Hard Drive
Video Card
Set the jumper to clear your CMOS, make sure to unplug the machine first. Then boot it and see if it boots.
If it doesn't put in another stick of memory first and boot. Usually memory is the leading cause of non boots like this.
If that doesn't help then unplug the floppy and the cdrom and try again.
If that doesn't help then try a different hard drive. (This is why I keep a spare drive with WinME loaded on it, I can pop it in pretty quick to see if I have a bad drive)
If all of the above doesn't work then you've only really got three things to check:
Go for the Power Supply first as you may be trying to pull too much from it. Get something that's 300W or better to ensure you'll have plenty of upgrade power.
Motherboard or Processor could be bad and those are the hardest things for regular puter users to check as they usually don't have extra stuff laying around (Like me cause I troubleshoot and repair ppls systems)

I can't install Windows 98 on a KT6V-LSR

I used to be able to dual boot Win98 and 2K from different partitions on a single 80Gb hard drive. Needed the Win98 only because my old Matrox capture card has no drivers for the newer OS’s. When I changed my mobo to an MSI KT6V-LSR (Via KT600) I couldn’t get the Win98 partition to work (I didn’t have to wipe it through 2 earlier mobo changes. I guess it couldn’t stand the 3rd)
The previous setup was like this, all on a 1-1/2 year old 80gb Maxtor:
Primary partition, 753 mb, FAT32, Windows 98
1st logical partition, 11gb, NTFS, Windows 2K Pro
2nd logical partition, 25gb, FAT32, for video files
3rd logical partition, 40gb, FAT32, for all my data, downloads, etc
I could get the standard Windows OS selection page upon boot. This time whenever I try to install Windows 98 I get the above “serious error” message right after the partition check by scandisk. It's not the installer's fault, it's been with me for a long time. Worked flawlessly before.
I am able to install Win2K on NTFS or FAT32. It is only when I try to install Win98 that I get slammed with this error. I can’t use my capture card and that’s where I earn a little.
The drive passes both the Maxtor diagnostic software (full system scan) and the Seatools generic test (full system scan).
There are no viruses detected (my software may be faulty, though).
PartitionMagic 7 fails to create the small partition I need for Win98, saying “cannot create partition, anti-virus software may be running” But I have disabled any virus settings in BIOS and I am using PartitionMagic from the boot diskettes.
Really stumped here. Can’t afford to buy a new drive right now just so to transfer my files and wipe the current drive.
In summary, the drive allows me to install Win2K on either NTFS or FAT32. But it will not allow me to install Win 98, whether on a Primary partition or the first logical partition (i.e. after Win2K has already been installed)
I have since been able to install Win98. But I had to connect the Drive to a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller.
Question is, is the new hardware really incompatible with the old OS?
THEN... On two consecutive nights, my registry in Windows 2000 got corrupted (hive corruption). And I have had to reformat and reinstall both times. I am worried now that the mobo I got may have serious faults.

You should be able to use windows 98 with this motherboard.
Can you try this.
Format the drive with only 1 partition (80GB FAT32)
Use maxblast to do this.
Remove the Ultra ATA66 PCI controller.
Remove the sound card.
Plug the hard drive in IDE cable 1 (set it to master too)
Plug your CD drive to IDE cable 2, set it to master.
Reset your CMOS
Now when you power up, enter the BIOS
go to Frequency/voltage control
Set the CPU to 166Mhz FSB (it should be running at 1.667Ghz)
CPU Ratio = Auto
go to advanced chipset configuration >DRAM settings
Set the memory to 333Mhz(166Mhz)
Go to Standard CMOS setup.
Press on your Hard drive
Set the mode to LBA
Also change your boot order to
Floppy
CD ROM
Your hard drive
Go to integrated peripherals
Disable the onboard sound
Now save and exit.
Boot from the windows 98 CD
See what happens.

5800 xm - bug or what else... it restarts itself a...

Hi all,
I'm the (for everything else lucky) owner of a 5800 XM, that works almost great.
Dunno what's the cause, it resets itself (does a partial reboot, showing the white screen with the Nokia blue logo) in several ordinary use circumstances. For example, it will almost certainly reset itself after sending an ordinary text message.
Already tried hard resetting, firmware upgrade, etc... never formatted my memory card, btw, and always restored settings from backup.
I even tried reinstalling firmware (31.0.101) but didn't solve.
Ideas?

XP SP2 won't run on K9VGM-V

I've been upgrading my daughter's computer, mainly because the on-board graphics failed and it seemed like a good excuse to get a better spec for her.
The specification is as follows:
Board - K9VGM-V, using on-board graphics and LAN - no added cards.
Processor - AMD64x2 4800
RAM - Crucial Ballistix 1Gb in DIMM1 and 1Gb in DIMM2 (DDR2 PC2 6400 CL4 unbuffered)
HDD Seagate 80Gb IDE
Floppy drive
CD-ROM
Power supply X-power ATX500TD
(+3.3v 36A; +5v 36A; +12v 20A; -5v1A; -12v 1A; +5v(sb) 2A)
My plan was to use the HDD with the already present OS which was Microsoft XP with SP2 and keeping the data (mostly music and photos) although I had a back up of hte data. THe computer started fine, I went through the BIOS set-up, and then waited for XP to start. I got the initial screen with the XP logo and the "little blocks travelling accross" which I take to mean it is loading, but after a couple of seconds the computer stopped and restarted, taking me back to the "Window's did not start properly choose whichever mode". Tried again several times, always with the same result. It would start fine in safe mode or safe mode with networking.
Figuring a Windows problem I reinstalled Windows. (Registered and validated as genuine Windows XP). It ran fine. I sorted out the problem with the audio drivers (courtesy of this web site), sorted out the various MSI drivers I neded (but didn't touch the BIOS), added various MS updates to Windows, and made sure all the hardware was working corectly in device manager - all satisfactory. I then updated with SP2 - back to the original problem.
I removed the floppy, CD-ROM and DIMM2 RAM so as to have an absolutely minmal installation, restored to the pre-SP2 siuation and confirmed that everything worked fine. Added SP2 again - same problem.
I've searched this website and haven't found anything similar. I'm always nervous of BIOS updates so I have't done that but I don't see anything in the update info to suggest that it will fix a Windows problem -so any light thant anyone can shed on what to try next will be greatly appreciated. I hope I have given enough of the appropriate info and specification.

I think this problem is more of a hardware issue. Have you tried using a linux live cd?
If it boots fine into safe mode then it is an installation/driver issue. Safe mode bypasses most driver problems. I would suggest you try using virtual pc from microsoft it is free and try it withing windows it is very, very easy to use to set up a virtual machine.
It COULD be a hard drive issue, if so i would try a low level seek format, and then install windows. Low level formats are NOT windows formats. Try installinf say PCLinuxos 2007 and if that works there is a problem with your drivers.
Ultimately it may well come down to hardware, just use other options to actually isolate if it is a hardware problem or not.

Boot problems with IDE HD and SATA HD on K7N2-Delta L

I'll get right to the point.
I have an PCI SATA Controller Card in my system (using a K7N2 Delta-L motherboard, BIOS v5.7 with an Athlon XP 2800+ and Corsair ValueSelect 512MB DDR400 RAM on a single stick). My system works fine in it's original configuration of drives (CD-RW drive only drive on IDE bus, and SATA drive only hard drive). However, upon installing my IDE hard drive from my old computer, the system will no longer boot right. I am connecting the other IDE HD as Slave on the CD-RW's bus, as I'm reserving the second bus for bigger and better things such as a DVD burner, and speed isn't too important for this hard drive as it's just my MP3/data I don't need in a hurry drive.
In the current configuration, all three drives are detected properly (CD-RW and HD detected on the IDE detection screen, and the SATA drive detected on the SATA card's detection screen). However, after the SATA detection screen, the system just stops. The cursor is still blinking, but nothing comes up.
Both hard drives are Western Digitals (IDE is a ATA100 Western Digital 60GB at 5400 RPM, and the SATA is a Western Digital 36.7GB at 10,000 RPM), and the CD-RW is a HP CD-Writer 9100. I have Windows XP installed on both hard drives (first partition of the IDE, which is divided into two), but considering the system doesn't even attempt to boot I don't think that's an issue. I've gone through and tried enabling and disabling "Boot Other Device", but still no love. My boot order is set to Floppy, CD-ROM, and SCSI, which works fine when the SATA drive is in there.
Any idea what's up? I can provide more information upon request, as I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention that's important.

Take a look at this link, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=71384, I think you both have the same problem. It seems that a sata drive doesn't like having an ide drive in the system that has an active partition.
Do like Wonkanoby suggest, reformat the ide hard drive and make sure that it's not set to be the active partition in the system. Boot with a 98 boot floppy if you have to so you can format the ide drive to fat32, once you can boot up using the sata drive you can use xp disk manager to convert the ide drive to ntfs.

C: drive won't start loading windows

Building a new system - I have a KT4V mainboard in aqn Antec case with a 2000+ CPU, GeForce 4 video card and a single floppy, CD-Rom, and 40 Gbyte drive. Very easy install, zipped thru BIOS process with no problem, system correctly recognizes the components. But when it boots now it gets to the point where all for D-Bracket lights are green, and just sits there with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner - won't start loading windows. I put the disk in another system - loaded fine -it's ready to go. Tried putting Windows XP startup disk in the cd. It recognizes that windows is already installed on the C: drive. I have tried repair and reinstall - after a few minutes the process hangs - I think when it tries to write to the disk for the first time.
I think I've tried everything. Other than figuring out that I have to reverse the HDD Led connector, no progress. :(

I bett the problem lies with the XP motherboard drivers loaded on the hard drive, it will not see the new board.
I would try to reboot on the old machine, load the new MB drivers into a folder on the desktop or wherever, then try to do a right click my computer>properties>hardware>device manager> + IDE ATA/ATIPI controler, uninstall both the primary and secondary channels. It will ask you to restart in between each one but don`t restart until done. Then instead of restarting that machine just shut down and swap the HD into the new system, hopefully it will see the IDE channel and when asked for drivers, direct it to the folder on the desktop or wherever you put them.
I just tryed to unistall both IDE channels on this machine and it reinstalled the drivers after reboot and then rebooted again so if it don`t work you should be able to put it back in the first machine.
Other then that, I think a fresh HD or one that has or needs a reformat installed on the new machine then add this one with the other programs you have as a slave to the first is going to be about the only way I know of.

I see alot of posts commenting about the amps on the 12 volt rail which on mine is running at 16. Do you think this is too low for my video card? Will I see any benefits on gettng a higher amp ps?
I'm not experiencing any problems right now. Have ran Aquarmark, 3dmark05, various Nvidia demos, Doom3 demo, without any lockups or problems.
3dmark was 4988(not real sure if that ran all the tests though)

5800 XM bug with image gallery

I don't know when,but it started today,
there were so many image files that named CET4,
I can't delete them because they were locked.
I could even see a key-like icon on the file

Hello. I recently erased all my Photos w/0 erasing my movies nor music. You can do the same with your 44gb`s of crap files without erasing or deleting your music
Step 1) connect your ipod to pc
step 2) click start on you PC and goto my computer. Opens up your hardware on your pc ( HD, floppy,cd-rom, dvd etc)
step 3) right click over ipod usually its E) HD mp3 storage
Step 4) view or explore and open ipod folders.
Step 5) find your file with the 44gb`s of crap- right click w/ mouse and delete
That should do the trick. Apple for some reason doesnt let you do it the simple way thru I-tunes

First A64 build - I have a few questions.

Hey guys, I just finished my first A64 build(Wow, what fun!!)...The specs should be in my sig. Anyway, everything seems to have gone without incident with the exception of a few minor things. Nothing major, just a few things that are bothering me...
First, when I finished installing Windows and went to switch the First Boot Device to Hard Drive it would not boot...It gets past the POST and then black screens...If I keep the First Boot Device set to CD-rom it works OK...By OK I mean it looks for CD's first, but eventually (after 1 or 2 secs) it loads up Windows from the Raptors...
Second, in the taskbar there is what appears to be an icon that has a CD drive and a green arrow on it...When I click it the option that is available is "Safely Remove Drive xxx" and both Raptors are listed...What the hell is that all about and what makes it go away?
Thirdly, what the hell is up with the temps on this thing? Sometimes after some benching it reads 55-56C, then other times it reads 40-42C under the same conditions(using the MSI utility and Everest)...Is it just something I have to live with?
Anyway, any help is appreciated...Thanks.

Hey Tet, you following me? lol...Still trying to get a few issues ironed out...
The problem I have is that there in no option for SCSI in the list for Boot Devices(unless it's called something else)...It lists the HD, Floppy, CD-rom, a couple USB devices and a few others which I can't recall off of the top of my head..In the Hard Disk Boot Priority there are 2 devices listed, the RAID drive and my slave drive...The first on that list is the RAID drive...There has to be something I'm overlooking, I'll keep trying...
As far as the sound goes, it looks like I'm SOL on that one, lol...I see some people have different opinions...I was hoping to get away without using the SB Live, but oh well, what can you do? I'll see if I get better framerates with SB live and let you know if I come to the same conclusions as Glenn...
Glenn, I've read through countless forums and have not seen any fix to the bouncy temp readings...A few people seem to have luck with flashing the BIOS, which I don't wanna have to do(this one is running pretty good) and some people are just giving up hope on getting accurate readings...This temp issue has been going on for far longer than I though and should have been addressed by MSI long ago, IMO...I haven't had an accurate temp reading since my old MSI KM2M combo!!...Are there any utilities that work better than others? All the ones I've tried are bouncy and read almost the same temps as any of the other utilities...Smart Fan, Everest and MBM5 are the ones I have tried so far with no real luck yet...

A terminal server must be in install mode??

I'm trying to install the ODP.NET 10103Beta software on a windows 2000 server machine. But I get a message saying a terminal server must be install mode. I don't understand this. I'm currently running the 10101 stable and had no problems with that.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just wanted to post the answer in case anyone else is having issues.
1. As the Oracle download page says, make sure the path you unpack the .zip file in has no spaces.
2. Run the setup.exe program from Start-Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
3. Hit Floppy/CD Rom...wait for it to give up, then browse to the setup.exe in the Disk1 folder and select it.
My .NET C# application automagically picked up on the new driver...I pretty much had to do nothing there.

How to retrieve additional information about roots?

Now, I need to obtain the device type for each root (for example floppy, cd-rom , hard disk, etc.).
Can I do this, without using native interface?

No power when IDE cable plug into mainboard

The motherboard I'm working with is a K7 Pro ATX IR3 Mainboard. Whenever I plug in the IDE cable to the mainboard, it seemed that there is no power coming from the power supply. I tried this with a cd-rom and the light isn't lit or do anything. As soon as I unplug the IDE cable from the mainboard, the CD-ROM works...meaning I can push the button for open and close. All the lights, HD and Power lights, on the front of the case are not even flashing or turn on.
If anyone has any suggestion I'm greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the confusion. In this situation when I talked about cable, I mean the IDE cable or floppy cable and not the power supply cable. I have one floppy, cd-rom drive, hard drive, sound card, and a video card. I believed the power supply is a 400 watt, although I'm sure. I just purchased this last week so I am pretty it'll handle what I am trying to do. When I turn the computer on these are the things I believed that are running with all three cables one end plugged into the mainboard and the other end to the devices such floppy, hard drive, and cd-rom.
