Floppy drive support in OSX. Any new solutions lately?

Hello,
I read that floppy drive support does not exist in OSX. Is this still the case today? Has anyone released any successful third party OSX floppy drivers lately that are known to work well?
My beige G3 has an internal floppy drive and in OSX the floppy drive is not recognized. This is simply the nature of OSX - there is no floppy drive support in any version of OSX - as far as I am aware.
I am writing this post to ask anyone if there are any new solutions to this issue. I see that there are some third party drivers but they seem to have negative reviews and cause more problems that it is worth.
(I might have to just use my external USB floppy drive that is attached to my other computer. However, it would be nice if I could use my built-in floppy drive on my beige)
Thanks.
PS
For anyone interested, here is one work around solution that I found for using the floppy drive. Its not as convenient, however, it is a solution: Restart the computer, insert an OS9 install CD and hold down the "C" key to boot up from the OS9 CD. The computer will now be in OS9 and the floppy will work. Copy your floppy files direct to the hard drive (i.e. don't use the desktop).

Without reliable OS X floppy drivers, you would have to resort to rebooting into OS 8 or 9 to use the floppy drive.
I wonder if anyone has considered mounting a USB floppy drive in that space. Some PCI cards have internal FW ports, but if you had an internal USB port, then possibly you could do some kind of custom installation, removing the stock floppy drive.
I think I would be more interested in putting a digital camera memory card reader in that floppy drive bay, or even a front panel USB port for use with a keychain USB drive. Anyone know of a way to put a USB port on the inside of your Desktop case?
Currently I use an external USB extension cord, maybe I could knock out the unused modem jack cover plate and snake the cable into there...maybe that's too much trouble.

It all depends a bit on how & what you backed up, and how you restored it. Select an affected track. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Click Cancel when asked to locate the file. Look at the location given on the summary tab. Now look through your computer for file in question. What are the two paths? iTunes could be using the wrong layout (pre or post iTunes 9) in error. Or your library could have been split on the previous system, and not restored to preciesly the same path. Posting back the two paths should make things clearer.

  • How can I stop Adobe Reader from reading (seeking) the floppy drive when opening/closing any PDF?

Ever since I opened a PDF file from my floppy drive Adobe Reader insists on checking/seeking/reading the floppy drive whenever I open and whenever I close any PDF (not using the floppy).  It is very annoying, as I use many PDFs per day and it creates a delay and noise every time.

Yes silly me I did assume that I would work with this product for at least 12 months and be supported.  I have no such illusions or assumptions any more.
It's good that you no longer have those assumptions...it's Adobe's policy to provide free updates to currently shipping products. Photoshop CS3 got a free upgrade and Camera Raw got a total of 6 (ACR 4.6 was the last shipping build).
The moment that a new version ships (as CS4 did in October, 2008), support for the previous version ends...that's been Adobe's policy since I can remember (at least to the early 1990's). The fact that you waited so long in the upgrade cycle that you didn't get the full benefit of 18 months of use of the product is hardly Adobe's fault. The fact is tat at the moment, you are a former customer not a current customer...in any event you now know that DNG Converter provides backwards compatibility.

  • Bluetooth Hanging PC, Any new solutions?

I know I have read a prior message about the Bluetooth dongle and Microsoft elite keyboard and mouse combo hanging the pc upon boot up.  The system just stays on the splash screen and I have to remove the dongle and reboot then it boots fine and I can then plug the dongle and use keyboard and mouse no problem.  I have the newest bios 3.5, there is no where in the bios to enable "Use USB Latency Device" though.  I have tried USB keyboard "Enabled and "Disabled" to no avail.  I have SP2 downloaded and installed and no conflicts exist in device manager for the USB hubs etc.  I am familiar with building and updating PC's and simply can not get around this one.  Please help as the freedom of bluetooth is great but it sucks to have to take out the dongle, stand by the Mega 180 until it gets to the windows screen and then have to plug in the darn thing.  No freedon this way.
Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

It just gets stranger for me...
Removed MS Bluetooth from rear of case and did not refit, due to replacing the shite MEGA TV Tuner with a Hauupauge WinTV USB2 PVR...exactly the same now happens. When the system does boot up after a few minutes Device Manger shows an unknown USB Mass storage device.
I haven't got a clue what this is but it must be the MSI USB bus scanning something and not identifying it correctly, as the same Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and WinTV device can operate perfectly well on a Fujitsu Liefbook S6010 notebook PC, AND an even older Compaq iPAQ  business desktop.
That got me to thinking could this be memory related as the lock occurs after processor ident, but before memory testing either completes or finishes.
I know that the Compaq uses slower PC100 memory and the notebook uses PC133 so-dimm.
My Mega uses a cheap (very cheap and very early unbranded IE just as PC266 was becoming common) PC333 DDR ram chip; could it possibly be that although compatible the timing isn't quite up to Nforce2/MSI motherboard limits. These motherboards are VERY memory sensitive in dual channel mode - they could exhibit some issues in single channel mode?
Well I'm due a PC400 dual channel 1GB upgrade methinks, I think i'll just have to let you know. (BUT I might dump the MEGA and go Shuttle, that heat pipe seems and sounds well thought out from what the forums say...unlike the M180!)
????     Just thinking that maybe a USB2 hub might get around the problem if it is some timing issue...cheaper than the Shuttle or the memory upgrade, and I really need to get this bloody BT stick hidden and the front closed now it's back at the front.
If I find something works I'll post it up.

  • How to transfer Windows 3 data from a G3 with a bad floppy drive

My first Mac was a PowerMac G3 beige tower (233 Ghz) in 1998.  At that time I installed VirtualPC running Windows 3.0 to use a genealogy program that didn't run on a Mac and input all my family data.  I have a 5 inch floppy disk with the data but when I tried to use it to transfer to a newer computer, I got a message that one of the files (of course it had to be the biggest!) was corrupted.  Now the floppy disc drivenon the G3 has failed.  I bought a "new" drive off the Internetn but it doesn't work either.  Windows 3.0 doesn't recognize USB, so I can't use my external floppy drive.  Is there any way I can transfer the data via a direct connection to another Mac?  I have a eMac (educational version of the original iMac, vintage 2002) that still works, also a PowerPC iMac and an Intel iMac.  I will be extremely grateful to anyone who can keep me from having to input all that family info again!

"I have a 5 inch floppy disk with the data but when I tried to use it to transfer to a newer computer..."
Do you mean a 3.5" floppy disk, used with the G3's internal FDD?  Unfortunately, long-term data storage on a floppy disk is risky, as degradation of the magnetic oxide on the disk's surface can contribute to file corruption.  The beige G3s had a "SuperDrive" FDD, which unlike a standard PC floppy disk drive, combined data and power on the same ribbon cable connection and didn't use separate cabling for each.  Is the "new" floppy drive that you bought designed for use in a beige G3?
"Is there any way I can transfer the data via a direct connection to another Mac?"
Are these same files stored on the hard drive in the beige G3, eliminating the need to read the floppy disk or are they solely contained on the floppy disk?  If the latter is the case, you still need a working FDD to read the disk, even with a networked connection between the beige G3 and the eMac or PowerPC iMac.  If you can transfer the files to a newer Mac, were you planning to install VirtualPC on the newer Mac, to run the Windows 3.0-based program and read them?

  • Floppy Drive Not Detected

    My Config is:
    K7N2 Delta ILSR Mobo
    512MB RAM
    WD 160GB SATA HDD
    1.44 MB FDD
ATI All-In-Wonder Pro 128 Graphics Card
    Plextor DVD-Writer
    Aopen DVD-ROM
    Issue Faced:
The floppy drive will not read any floppies in the drive.  Whenever, I try to use a bootable Win98Se floppy disk in the drive during bootup, the drive light just comes on and goes off but will not access the disk.  In Windows 98 the drive is detected correctly in the Device Manager,  but will not read any disks giving an error message that the drive is not ready.
The drive is being detected in the BIOS, the FDD Controller is enabled and the Device Manager detects is, I have tried two floppy drives - faced the same issue - but they work on another system flawlessly, tried changing the fdd cable and used another power cable, have connected the twisted end of the IDE cable to the Floppy drive and the other end to the Motherboard, but the issue still persists.
So is there anybody who could help me with this issue??

No that has nothing to do with it...do you have a new floppy cable and floppy drive to install in place of what's in there now? You need to swap parts here to find out if the cable is bad or the drive is bad...if after swapping them out methodically then you may have a bad floppy controller on the motherboard...

There seems to be a problem, just now, with the USB 3 ports on the new MBP's supporting eternal USB 3 drives. Some people have no luck at all - can't even recognize the drive - and some are reporting USB 2 speeds (those who drives are recognized). I'd call a dealer such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3 drives that actually work with MBP's with USB 3 ports. You may have to wait for a software/firmware update.

When you setup the wireless and ethernet in the computer.. ipv6 will be on automatic.. this is wrong for the latest TC firmware and airport utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Go to the wireless and ethernet setup in preferences and change ipv6 to link local.
Once you do the big backup by ethernet the wireless will function fine for incremental.. it is obviously not estimating the size correctly..
A full back-up on the iMac would be about 650 GB.  The partial updates that I have been trying start out at 115MB and keep growing indefinitely.  The original back-up never finished nor have any of the follow-up attempts.
The first estimate should be the full backup but it will keep growing as the backup advances.. I would also delete any inprogress files to make sure it is not messing up .. delete even a sparsebundle if there is one for the imac on the TC and start afresh once you have ethernet connection.
    See A10 here.
Pondini may have some other clues there to give you an idea of why the backup is slow or not finishing.. there is a lot of issues with TM when it decides not to work.

  • My hard drive is failing, need a new one.  What kind should I buy for a Mac osx 10.4.11 Tiger.

Also I have backed up all my data on a mercury elite external hard drive.  But it would not allow me to clone my drive.  Possible due to the error, failing hard drive.  How would I get my data back on the new drive?

You can run you Mac from an external harddrive.  I do not notice much difference when I run from an external drive.
You need to use a coloning program to get the external hd to boot.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

  • New Mac User - x1600 Driver Support Help

I bought my first Mac yesterday afternoon after using a PC for 9 years, I was told Macs are user friendly, that they make computing easy but as of right now I am not finding that to be the case.
I am not a big gamer but I do enjoy World of Warcraft. I installed and patched the game and when I logged in I was noticing some studdering in the video when moving by either the keyboard or mouse. I figured that I just needed to tweak some settings in-game but the problem kept happening. So I decided to go ahead and update the video drivers and that is what has led me to here.
I can't find any x1600 256Mb drivers. It's as the video card is no longer supported. Now I have been reading that there are 3rd Party websites or that I have to spend more money to get Windows XP but I figure if these are the options after spending current sell price w/ AppleCare I am better to return this 18 hour old machine then have play doctor on a new rig.
    What am I missing?

    DraigCoch,
I think the last poster assumed that you were running XP (and it appears from your initial post that you are not), and running the game there.
So, I will respond to your concerns about OS X video drivers.
No, you will not find them listed on ATI's website. Apple works with the various video card manufacturers (well, the developers, anyway), and in most cases the latest versions of the OS X drivers for all the "OEM" cards Apple uses are included in OS X. When new drivers become available, they are installed along with updates to OS X.
In some cases, ATI produce a new driver, but release of that driver will wait for the next update to OS X. This delay is usually on the order of only a few weeks, however, so the short answer to your question is that you already have the latest drivers. This is one of the reasons it can be said that "Macs just work." Of course, they are still computers...
So, the problem is not with the drivers. It is either with the game (reinstall??), or it is completely possible that there is something wrong with your installation of OS X. I frequently recommend that anyone with a new computer (Mac or otherwise) format the hard drive, then reinstall the OS themselves. Further, I recommend that they "zero" the drive in the process.
Many computers ship from the factory with incipient disk errors. OS X will automatically repair these errors if they are minor, but critical system files could remain damaged. In addition to insuring that you have a properly-running installation of OS X, "zeroing" the hard drive will map out any bad blocks found on the drive, thus making it much less likely that you will encounter a disk error in the near future.
All this said, there could be something wrong with your MBP, hardware wise, but it is much more likely that you just have a bad installation. Also, the only way to make any determination on this score is to follow my recommendations, ruling out any software problem.
    Scott

  • My iPhone 4 calendar won't sync to iCloud. If I make a new event on my iCal on my MBP it will sync to iCloud and to my iPhone, but any new events I create on my iPhone will not sync to iCloud. Any potential solutions?

I have tried numerous things like turning off iCloud on both devices and rebooting them and turning iCal on again, checking the settings, checking what calendars are being used but nothing has worked so far. Any other solutions welcome! Hoping I will not have to resort to restoring my iPhone completely.

Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Calendar and be sure you have selected an iCloud calendar as your default and not something else like On My iPhone, a Google calendar, etc.  If you haven't, make this change, then add a new event and see if it appears on your calendar on icloud.com now.
If your settings are correct and new events still aren't appearing on icloud.com, add any missing calendar events from your phone to your calendar on icloud.com.  Once the calendar on icloud.com is up to date, go to Settings>iCloud, turn Calendars to Off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (they will still be in iCloud), then after a minute or so, turn Calendars back to On.  Then add a new event on your phone and see if it appears on your calendar on icloud.com now.
