Fluctuating screen brightness on MBP?

I got my MBP (i7, 15.6", Lion) in June and love it.  Over the last month, however, I've noticed the screen frequently fluctuating in brightness, from "normal" to super bright over a 2-3 second period, then back to normal again.  It doesn't get really dark except,of course, when it is about ready to go to sleep.  The graphics remain clear and sharp.  The computer is not being taxed with a heavy application load (only have a browser open).
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Dave

Never mind! It resolved itself. I think.
It took three reboots, then the brightness was back to normal again.
I don't know if this had anything to do with it, but at my third reboot, at the gray loading screen (where the brightness still worked), I hit the F2 (brightness up) key like crazy for about 1 minute. They OS X loaded as normal, with the usual screen brightness.

  • MBP 2011 Screen brightness changing regardless of the ambient light

As stated in the subject my brand new MBP 2011 screen brightness changes on its own, yes i know about the ambient light sensor, but my screen is going from med brightness all the way to minimum brightness even though the ambient light is constant. yes I know i can turn it off, but why build in an ambient light feature that just makes the screen go to mimimum brightness when in a well lit room??
or do i have a faulty one??

I too have this problem on my spanking new MacBook Pro.  Called AppleCare and they said they weren't aware of this issue.
Meanwhile, this is my 1st mac.  Had it for a few weeks now.  Decided to open iTunes for the 1st time.  The whole MacBook Freezes, no mouse interactivity, reboot required.  This happens EVERY time I start iTunes which I no longer do.  Apparently it's a known issue which Apple has patched(unsuccessfully).  But hey c'mon, I mean iTunes?  This is one of the core apps which SHOULD be tested extensively against the hardware. When you consider Apple PROVIDES the hardware, this is simply unacceptable.  Unbelievable even.  I simply can't believe how poor this is from a major company.  But hey my MacBook Pro LOOKS GOOD right, so who cares if it's a technically malfunctioning piece of junk.
Here's my theory.  Is part of Apple's patch deliberately reducing screen brightness without user authorisation when the MacBook starts to overheat, all because they know they've been incompetent/negligent with their QA testing and the hardware can't handle the software?  If so, why have users not been informed?
I'm from Australia and we have this so-so comedian called Chris Lily who fans have taken to calling a genius, the joke amongst non-fans being the word genius has been dumbed down over the years to be almost meaningless.   Anyway, maybe a certified Apple 'genius' can explain the reasoning for the apparently deliberate brightness reductions?

  • MBP forgets screen brightness settings?

Since I have installed Leopard my MBP "forgets" where I had the screen brightness set once it's restarted. It defaults to just below half, even if I have it on full when I shut it down. Am I missing a setting?

The screen changes brightness so that when you are in a dark room it doesn't blind you. this works in conjunction with the keyboard lighting up so you can see it.
What you can do is that you can manually set the brigthness when you are in a darker room to brighter or dimmer, and the machine will remember that setting under those conditions, as I have found out. Not sure if it will let you have full brightness in a dark room unless you uncheck the setting that controls this in displays preferences as someone else pointed out.
Same applies to keyboard brightness settings. If you don't want the keyboard fully lit up, you can dim it manually in the dark, and it will remember that setting next time.
Once you get used to it and can control it, it is the way to go, IMO.

  • Brightness of MBP compared to PB screens

I currently have a 15" PB and a 15" MBP. I now have them sitting side by side and am honestly stunned by the differences - particularly the screens.
The whites on the PB look almost grey or yellow !!

From what I've read and what I've experienced, it's both: laptops get brighter and brighter screens as technology progresses, and individual laptop screens dim with use. So even comparing a brand new, out of the box last-generation PowerBook to a brand new MacBook Pro, you'll notice the MBP screen is brighter. But when you compare a PowerBook to a same model, same generation PowerBook that has been used for some months, you'll notice that the brand new PB has a brighter screen.
In short, any time you upgrade from your old notebook to a newer generation, brand new notebook, you'll see a huge difference in screen brightness, and it's due to the compounded effect of the two reasons noted above.

  • Can't Adjust Screen Brightness MBP 2010

Hi everybody, this issue is driving me nuts!
I've browsed all the sections on this forum and numerous threads and still no dice... Here's my issue:
-I own an late 2010 MacBook Pro (iOS dev machine), which was working perfectly up to the point where I had to update to Mountain Lion 10.8.5
After the update, brightness control on the keyboard is gone (F1 and F2 are duds), also no manual control anywhere else...what gives??
I've done all the SMC reset mumbo-jumbo without any avail....seriously, it sounds like the old fix for windows 98..."just reboot and it will be fine...or not". I also won't accept "go to a genious bar" as answer, since that doens't exist on these parts and any "procedure" over a apple device will take over a month to be done with.
    So my questions are:
1-What where they thinking when they removed the frigging slider from settings?? Do they take us for some sort of idiots that can't be trusted to handle their brightness without using the keyboard?
2-Why can't I change the brightness on my $2500 laptop after a software update? Pray, do explain how this has come to be?
3-Is there any command (using terminal) that I can run to permanently set the brightness level or just to, you know...change it?
4-I'd like to scale this issue with a formal complaint towards apple, I find this to be unacceptable as a customer and I'd like to give them a piece of my mind. Can someone point me out on the proper path to do this?

  • Screen brightness fluctuates despite adaptive setting being disabled

    Hey everybody.
I'm on a 2012 13" MacBook Pro running Windows 8. I've been noticing my screen brightness changing randomly in the middle of all sorts of tasks. It's always a very sudden jump to a brighter setting--never dimmer. Everything's turned up all the way and I've followed the internet's instructions to disable all the adaptive settings that change the brightness. Still happening, so I'm suddenly concerned it might be a hardware issue. Any insights?
    Thanks!

    That's good news.
The new account is using information from a brand new Preferences file which is unaffected by whatever made yours misbehave.
Do this: Go to the Finder and select Go to folder like so:
    then type library like so:
oops, posting too fast... stand by while I edit this...
    As I was saying...
Click Go, then find the folder called Preferences and open it. Then find the files called
    com.apple.universalaccess.plist, and
    com.apple.systemsound.plist
and drag them both to the Trash.
    Log out.
Log in again and open System Preferences > Universal Access. Configure all four tabs the way you want, then close System Preferences.
    Does that fix things?

  • Ideapad S510p Screen Brightness Fluctuates

    Hi
    2 weeks before I brought a Lenovo Ideapad S510p.
I installed Windows 8.1 and all available latest drivers from lenovo website.
But a peculiar problem I am facing is the screen brightness doesn't stick constant. Sometimes it dims. When I again change the brightnesss settings in power option, it again restores. But still its not consistent. It fluctuales little bit.
    Please help.
    Regards
    Partha Sarathi Mishra

I think you are correct that it is the factory default to be set for Auto Brightness. There have been quite a number of threads discussing issues with Auto Brightness over the past few months. There seems to be a pretty wide range of how this feature operates from one iPad to the next, from what I remember reading in those threads.
I'm not so sure that you have a problem with your iPad but like you said it's more of a nuisance than anything else. I am using the original iPad so maybe the Smart Cover does have some effect. I wish I had more to offer but maybe someone else with the same experience will respond with a suitable fix for this.

  • MacBook Pro 13" screen brightness

I just bought a 13" MacBook Pro and find the screen brightness and contrast is much less than expected. It basically has to be turned up full on AC to be acceptable, which is very unexpected, since I am typing on a 16 month old MacBook Air now that is about the same at 80% of screen brightness. The contrast is less pronounced on the new machine, too, and the notion of 60% more color saturation seems faulty. I am going to return it and see if the Apple Store thinks this is normal or a faulty screen. Am I being unreasonable to think the new MBP screen should be at least equivalent to the original Air screen?
    Message was edited by: MacBook

Yes, I agree that there is something different about the two displays. I conducted my own side-by-side comparison -- in the same room lighting, and also switching the places of the two machines -- and found at any given setting, the 13" MacBook Pro was darker than the MacBook Air. Furthermore, when I first started the machine, the MBP's keyboard backlighting would not go off, no matter the lighting. Then, when I went to make these comparisons, the MBP's keyboard backlighting would not come on.
This linked picture is a composite from two pictures taken in succession in the same lighting and angles, just as they came out of the camera, showing the relative brightness of the two. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2547/3844348963e76728bce2o.png
So, I packed up the machine for a trip to the Apple Store and either an exchange or a return.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 - Screen Brightness Problem

I  have two Nokia Lumia 1520.
Both of them have the same problem. I will explain the problem to you in detail and before that let me assure you I am a Windows Phone long time user , have been part of the development , developed several apps for the platform and I have used Lumia 800 , 720 , 920 , 925 and now 1520. So I am well aware of all the settings , sunlight readability , automatic brightness etc. This problem is not due to any of these , I can assure you
    Now the problem ,
I set the automatic brightness option OFF
I move the brightness to HIGH
    Then I lock the phone
When I unlock the phone , the brightness drops by 10% suddenly without any intervention
This problem happens sometime. Some days I see this problem , some days I don't and there are few days where I see this problem very heavily.
I purchased another 1520 and it has the same problem. I am very sure , from my experience that this is a firm ware issue. This is NOT a hardware problem , but a serious problem from your software end. It is prudent that Nokia recognizes this problem and finds a solution to this. Interestingly , I am not the only one who is facing this problem , the whole globe is facing the same problem and for such a pricey phone , this is a frustrating experience - very frustrating. I am sending some links , which will show the problems users are facing:

The phone is rock solid and amazing except this irritating problem.
I have only few days within which I can request a exchange from the merchant. So if any Nokia official can confirm that a software fix is on the way , it would be super helpful
    Nokia , please help !
Moderator's note: We have removed the IMEI numbers. Posting of personal information is not allowed in this forum for security purposes.

I have Nokia Lumia 1520 Black.
I have also been facing the same problem with screen brightness.
The problem occurs only when the Brightness is in Automatic mode.
--> When the Brightness is set to Automatic mode & take out from dark location to bright location the display turns out to weird grey color.
--> And then if the brightness is set to low, medium or high display comes to normal.
Is this issue related to the hardware or software.
If it is related to the Software will you be able to fix it ? or else How about the replacing with the new one ?
    Awaiting for the response.

  • Adjust Screen Brightness in Energy Saver modes?

Can I set a custom screen brightness level in both Battery and Power Adapter modes? The Mac seems to always default to a certain level, but can this be changed?

Nope - on my wife's MB (i.e. 13" MacBook, unibody/late 2008), there's no 'custom setting' or 'Details' when clicking on the menu bar battery icon. There is a shortcut to the Energy Saver preference pane, but no option to control brightness in that preference pane other than the checkbox I mentioned above. You can set timers for display sleep, etc., of course.
So, what I see on my MBP, what I see on my wife's MB, and what you're seeing on your MBP seem to be the same. If you have access to a MacBook, check again - if you find the setting your thinking of, post a screenshot...

  • 10.5.6 disabled screen brightness control...

This update has caused my screen brightness to be uncontrollable from the keyboard (F1 and F2). I am forced to change brightness from the capacitive buttons on the screen itself. In addition, the visual slider does not appear like it used to.

I have a new MBP (late 2008) and 10.5.6. I do not have the problem you describe on my MBP display.
Does your problem only occur with the external display?

  • Screen Brightness on iphone 4s

My iphone 4s has had a problem after i upgraded to ios 6 , the screen can be at one moment fully readable with the adjustment on brightness set to the middle ,,and then its light is off , checking the brightness its reset itself to no brightness , this happens with the auto switched on or off , i have hard reset the iphone , used itunes to do a restore and have set it up as a new iphone but the problem will not go away. Even on the charger i have the brightness set to mid way and when i take the phone off the charger the brightness bar moves to no brightness , i have one time had the screen on the brightness settings and watched the brightness bar lower to no brightness , this is with the auto brightness option switched off , this also happens with the auto brightness switched on as well.
All these problems happened after upgrading to ios 6 , the one thing i did notice after the first upgrade was the screen itself had a higher brightness than before , now the phone mostly sits at home as i cannot use the iphone as the screen brightness changes so much its become a pain to use , so i have to use my wifes samsung galaxy s3 , any ideas on how to sort this problem out or is it a trip to the apple store to get a new iphone 4s ?

I've upgraded to iOS 7 and I have the issue on an iPhone 4S. I can't remember this happening on iOS 6, but there may have been one or two occassions where it did. So, with regards to Julia98765's post above, in my case it just got a whole lot worse with iOS 7, much as I love everything else about it!
The screen starts off on my normal brightness level (auto is off), and then anywhere between a few minutes to just a few seconds, the screen goes totally dark, like it has been slid to the minimal brightness setting. From then on, the screen fluctuates wildy, sometimes snapping back to full normal brightness, but mostly just dim flickering until it decides to settle down in its dim state, or if it has been locked for a few minutes by which time it is showing normal brightness levels again.
Then the whole thing repeats itself. This happens in one form or another pretty much every time I use my phone! The only thing I haven't tried yet is restoring the phone through iTunes so will give that a go and report back soon.

  • Bye Bye Screen Brightness Buzz?

I noticed many updates today, so decided to install them all.
Then out of no-where pops up this new Firmware as well.
Just toying around, I take my computer off power - immediately dimming the screen, and to my surprise... no more screen buzzing.
I've been playing with the screen settings for 10 minutes now, no buzz/hum... I'm kind of reluctant to restart!
Any one else have improvement from the screen brightness noise issue with the updated software/firmware? Am I the only lucky one?
I don't want to give a false sense of security, but this was the only noise problem that I found disturbing because it was VERY loud. Now it's very very dull, if not totally gone. I hope this update helps you guys too, and is indication that apple has gotten very serious about addressing these concerns.
EDIT: Since restarting, and playing with the tilt of my screen, the sound did reproduce, but not as loud as before.
Previously, and currently, to make the hum go away I just have gently pull the screen forward until there is slight resistance on the hinge (but not enough to move the lid). This stops the hum completely. Also if you gently press down on the grey bar where the wireless components are, you can also temporarily lose the noise.
So I apologize for getting any hopes up, it seems that it's still there, but can be slightly dimmed by the updates. If not, try what I said, gently push on the hinge area (rubber) area, and when you hit it right, the noise is completely gone.

Apple fixes this noise by replacing your display
inverter. You should ask them to do it if you want
    the noise fixed. Its hardware.
Despite telling the AASP 3 times the display inverter needed replacing, they changed the logic board in my MBP. Now they say Apple is shipping the same inverter part number as what's in the machine so they need to contact Apple to find out what to do.. Grr....

  • ML: screen brightness

have a 2010 MBP... using ML... i set my screen brightness (auto adjust OFF).. and every time i wake the MBP the screen bright is back up to full

    hi evre
power management may cause that issue due to the application contains the system files that fn keys work.
can you try to un-install > restart your computer > re-install the power management first? if you can, please un-install power management in safe mode.

  • Satellite A100 (PSAA9): Win7 + screen brightness adjustment issue

    Hi
I have installed Windows 7 64-bit on my toshiba A100 (psaa9) machine, and i cannot modify screen brightness anymore.
It is maximum brightness always. Fn key does not work, and neigther i can modify the brightness manually through nvidia control panel. nvidia driver is 7.15.11.7967, installed automatically with windows.
    In a similar thread http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=182780
i've read suggestions about Value Added Package to be installed, but there is no package like this for my model.
how can i fix my problem?
    thanks

    hi all,
    thank you for reply!!!
ok, i tried to install VAP and Flash Card Utility for Satellite L500. first, installing Flash Card Utility i got invalid serial number error. i've read in forum that it might be due to inappropriate driver for my version on laptop or if i did not install VAP first. so, second, i tried to installed VAP, but i get value "Setup tvap error 0x8146045B" :(
according my display driver: it was nVidia driver automatically installed with win7. in fact there is no display driver for win7 64bit version on toshiba website... i guess i have more problems with display, as my secondary display blinks every time some system event like driver/program installation or usb device plugging-in or -out happens.
