Fluff in the lightening connector preventing charging

Every now and then my phone does not start to charge when I connect it,
I first noticed this on my iPhone 5, and now am getting it on my iPhone 6 so I'd be surprised if it wasn't a common problem.
On the first occassion I took it straight to the Apple Store, where the Tech Guy poked something into the connector, then disappeared and came back a couple of minutes later and handed it back saying it was fixed.
Which it was.
For the time being, but every month or so I would get the same problem, but wise to the cause now use a paper clip, pin or someother small sharp object to poke around and scrape out the accumulated fluff from the connector.
However I am always very nervous doing this, and I suspect it's not recommended - a compressed air can doesn't seem to be effective.
I suspect the cause is keeping the phone in my pocket - but doesn't everyone.
A cover would be a good solution on the next model, but in the meantime does anyone have a better solution to cutting the end off a charging cable and leaving that connected - apart from being an expensive solution at £12 a go, it's also not an aesthetic one.

I suspect the cause is keeping the phone in my pocket - but doesn't everyone.
yes it is totally and no they don't
Put the iPhone in your pocket ,if you must , connector side up then you are not ramming the contents of your pocket into the iPhone

  • Why can't I download from my GO PRO sd card using the lightening connector?

I bought the lightening SD card adapter thinking I could use my iPad to store films and still pics from my GoPro Hero 3 SD card to fr space when on holiday....
When I plug it in with the SD card from my normal camera it works fine but when I use the GoPro SD it says it can't import. Is there an app or something others use?
    Cheers

There appears to be no published SD card size limit, but in this forum and other forums, users report that SD cards are limited to 32GB.

  • IPhone 5 lightening connector no longer connects!

    Hello
I took my iPhone 5 off charge yesterday and now when trying to reconnect the lightening connector it doesn't fit! It won't go in all the way and fails to connect by a few mm. There's nothing inn iPhone slot blocking the connector. Any ideas????

iPhone warranty is provided by Apple, not AT&T.  If you're beyond the intitial 2 week return for refund, you need to go to Apple.

  • Can you use the iPod connector cable to charge the iPhone or

only the cable that came with the iPod?
Also, I put the iPhone briefly into my old inMotion speakers and a message
came up saying that the device didn't support an iPhone and would either not
charge my iPhone or have bad consequences for my iPhone-i wasn't sure-it did
    work in the speakers tho.

I use an iPod connector almost all the time and have never had a problem, even after market iPod connectors, but you'll get a different response depending on who you talk to. The guy at the Genius Bar told me yes, but phone support said no. Short answer...You should be able to use the iPod connector.
When you plug the iPhone into some 3rd party devices, you'll get a message stating "not compatible with iPhone" but that is because you are going to get interference because of the cell signal. You can put it into Airplane mode to avoid the interference or just deal with the interference and just click OK. That being said, I have read other posts where these devices do cause damage to the iPhone so proceed at your own risk.

  • My Ipad charger (metal bit around the white bit) and by the way its the lighting connector  has got stuck inside my Ipad, just wondering if anyone could help me get it out, or tell me if apple would still apply this to the guarantee (still in guarantee)

Yesterday my Ipad was running out of charge, so of course I went to charge it, I didnt realise that the lighting connector would not go in, evetually I realised that a part of the charger got jammed inside the ipad and now I cant get it out
I was just wondering if anoyone coud help, give advice or tell me if apple does include this in the gaurntee since it is another year until it runs out
this is not accidential damage by the way
    many thanks

Take it to an Apple store genius bar...should be a warranty coverage but they will tell you exactly.

  • My ipod showed the lightening sign yesterday but it stay on red instead of charging. then I turned it off so maybe it would stop but now my iPod wont turn on. I can't press my home button because that had broke earlier this year

my device is a iPod touch 5 generation

    Not Charge

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My iPhone 5 will not charge. Has new battery. Must be the lightening connection. Any advice. Genius told me to buy a new phone for $250. HELP,

My iPhone 5 will not charge. Even though it will show that it is charging, it will often not accept a charge. Appears to be the lightening connection, because I can sometimes get it to work by playing with the connection point.  Phone is 16 months old. This problem has been on-going for months, and is getting worse.
Anything I can do other than buying another new phone?

  • How durable is the dock connector (charge port)

I saw many threads (also on other forums) about broken charge port in iPhone 3G. So I wonder how it looks in iPhone 4/4S.
Especially interesting for me is a situation, when I'm trying to connect the device to AC charger using 30 pin cable. Sometimes is needed to stretch the cable (which is already inside iPhone's port) because electric socket is far from table etc. I just want to prevent port in my iPhone from being broken (to be precise - that plastic part with pins seems susceptible to bend). Did You hear about any damages caused by 30 pin plug inserted to charge port?
Thanks in advance (and sorry for my english).

"sometimes is needed to stretch the cable because electric socket is far from table etc,"?
Right there is a good way to damage the port. The cable connection should never be under such strain.

  • Has anyone ever experienced the situation where plugging in the USB connector to the charging source (high-power USB port or Apple charger) halfway, then pressing it in firmly, results in the iPad not charging?

Has anyone ever experienced the situation where plugging in the USB connector to the charging source (high-power USB port or Apple charger) halfway, then pressing it in firmly, results in the iPad not charging?

It's highly likely that there is a poor connection in the phone - either a pin in the dock connector or internal wiring harness.  No software fixes or "tricks" would work, but I would recommend restoring in iTunes, first using a backup and if needed restore as a new phone.
Otherwise, opening and repairing the phone takes some tech knowledge that can't be relayed here.  Apple doesn't repair phones other than replacing batteries (not inconceivable that you have a bad battery), but offers "out-of-warranty" replacement (refurb) phones for $149 (US).  3rd party iPhone repair centers may be able to fix it for less.  Google to find them,
    Tried soft and hard resets
FYI, there's no such thing as "soft" or "hard" resets in iPhone terminology.  There is only one phone reset. You'll see those terms thrown around by technically ignorant posters, but they mean different things to different people and are actually archaic, 1980s PC terms that have nothing to do with iPhones.

  • Macbook won't start or charge unless I disconnect and reconnect the battery connector each time .

I have a late 2011 model Macbook Pro, 10.7.5 OS and I've had no issues whatsoever up until a week ago. The night before if stopped working I did everything as usual, did some HW, emailing then I shut it down. I woke up the next morning and it wouldn't turn on so I figured it was dead, so I got my charger plugged it in and got no light, green or orange. What I got was a faint green blinking on the charger light and my battery level indicator wasn't working. I thought it was my charger but it wasn't because worked fine on my girlfriend's Macbook.
I googled and tried PRAM and SMC to no avail. When I tried the SMC I didn't take the battery out I just disconnected the connector (Don't know if it makes a difference) and Voila it worked and I thought I fixed the problem. I turned it off and the next day the same thing, I have to disconnect and reconnect the battery connector each time for it work. Other than this issue I have no problems, mac runs fine while it's on and I shut it down or restart it for awhile after I reconnected the battery but if I try to turn it back on or restart it hours after I've done that then it won't work . One thing I may add is after I reconnect and plug my charger in, the light is green for about 5 seconds (even though it's not fully charged) then turns orange .
I'm guessing I need a new battery or logic board , but I'll keep my fingers crossed .
I won't be able to set up an appointment until next week but I would like to see if I could get any help here in in the meanwhile.
    Thanks !

Hi, I dont know if this may be the cause as i too have the same problem. But it only occurs after i disconnect my Iphone from my macbook pro.
The Macbook has worked perfectly and then all of a sudden last week it started to shut down after i would disconnect my Iphone 5.
The mac wouldn't restart, charge or anything.
I tried all the trouble shooting reccommended, Shift Alt command button combinations. ( there were a fair few ) None worked.
Then i found out about disconnecting the connector.
    This fixed the problem.
But alas, It done it again after my next sync.
This has done it 4 times now. And only when i disconnect the iphone after using itunes on the mac. I done it all correctly 3 times and the 4th time i just pulled it out with out ejecting from itunes, but still done it.
The iphone Syncs perfectly. I get everything i want onto the iphone. But for some reason as soon as the cord is disconnected from the mac BOOM. Dead mac.
If i leave the cord and the phone plugged in but still eject the phone it doesnt shutdown tho.
I found if i shutdown the macbook, then disconnect the iphone cord once the mac is completely shut down then my mac will start back up again with no problems.
As i said i dont know if this is the cause of your problem and if it will help you or not? But if not, maybe it will help someone else out who finds your post?
Hope you get your problem sorted
    Chris

  • Does anyone have problems with the lightening to USB cable when charging from an outlet? After 6  months of use, it seems to wear out as a result of twisting caused by using the iPad while charging?

Does anyone else have problems with the lightening to USB cables, particularly the longer version, when using the iPad and charging at the same time?
If so, am I doing anything wrong?

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • Is Apple making a connector with the lightening on both ends for 5s and ipad mini syncing capabilities

I can not sync my 5S with IPad Mini because of adapter not having lightening connector on both ends. I can't afford a new computer to sync my phone. Getting replacement phone because camera stopped working but can't backup my phone. My Mac doesn't have intel.

Okay great..bought ipad mini for nothing..everybody said get an ipad you can use it to sync your phone blah blah blah..
    Thank you for info

  • How do you get sound through the dock connector to a PC or Mac?

Where I work they have blocked the Pandora website. (Along with just about every other online radio site.) They don't mind if we listen to music, as long as it's not streamed online through their network.
I have both a PC & a Mac on my desk.
What I would like to do is listen to my Pandora app from my iPhone by plugging the dock connector into a Mac or PC. This would keep the battery drain to a minimum & allow for better quality.
When I plug in the dock connector the phone starts charging & iTunes want's to sync. I can run the Pandora app, but no sound comes through the computer.
Does anyone know how to get the audio to come from the dock connector & play through the computers sound card?

    You have several choices:
    1. Composite AV Cable: has a dock connector on one end and USB, RCA line out and RCA composite video on the other. It also comes with an AC Adaptor.
    2. Component AV Cable: same as the Composite AV Cable but with RCA component video.
    3. Universal Dock: has a dock connector socket on it and a line out socket.
    4. iPhone 3G Dock or the (original iPhone Dock): same as the Universal Dock but designed just for the iPhone.
All you need is somewhere to plug the line out into.

  • HT201359 How can I delete my card details from the account to prevent my daughters ordering apps on the account when they don't realise they have to pay for them!!??

My daughters keep updating apps from istore and they do not realise they are being billed for them.  I want to change my card details held on my account so that they can't do this without going through me first.  Does any one know if this is possible??
    many thanks

Updating apps don't cost anything. If they have iOS devices, they're probably making in-app purchases. Many apps, particularly games, are free for the base game but charge for additional features such as levels, "coins" and other such add-ons. To prevent this from happening again, turn off "In App purchases" in the Restrictions settings on your device. You may also want to turn off the ability to install apps, to prevent purchases in case the child gets hold of your iTunes Store account information, and set the password to be required immediately.  For more information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4213
As to changing your account information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918
but I'd suggest just setting up the parental restrictions on the iOS devices and in iTunes on your computer, if applicable, so they just can't buy anything on their own.
    Regards.
