Flushing dns mac os 10.9.2?

When I run suggested protocol to flush DNS (dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder) nothing happens.
What I am really trying to do:  I have an accumulation of websites that pop up as suggestions when I want to create a document hyperlink to a site on the web.  i want to clear this list.  Is that part of the DNS cache flush?
If not, how can I get rid of this list?
If so, why doesn't the protocol above work?
Thanks...

Thanks.  I didn't ask the question very well.
I am doing a power point presentation and am creating hot links to pages of websites.
In the dialog box to insert a hyper link there is a field at the top  ("link to") in which the destination website address is supposed to be entered.
There are "suggested" websites in a list that shows up when I click on the arrow to the right this field.
I don't want that list to appear any more.
I thought it would be something to do with erasing a cache...so I tried to do a DNS flush as I describe, above, but nothing happened.  I entered the two commands (one after the other) and all I got was a new line on which to enter another command.
My main goal is to get rid of that list in the insert hyperlink dialog box -- I don't like any such lists.
I am now, additionally, interested in why the DNS flush does not apparently work.
Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

  • Flush DNS

I have been told to flush my DNS by my webhost so that I can view my website control panel icons and access my webmail
The fix worked, however, when I went to the Mac store, I was told NEVER to do this because I could end up with a useless machine if I make an error
A few days later I am again, unable to use my website software and access my webmail
The host has told me to repeat flush DNS
Surely I shouldn't have to do this every time I want to check my emails if there is a risk that I will render my Mac useless?
    Please advise
    Thank you

    Thank you for the response
I have rebooted it but I still can't access my webmail and my icons are still missing on my control panel
I am not in a position to change my host at the moment, is there anything else I can do?
    Thank you again.

  • How to Flush DNS Cache in Mavericks 10.9.3

So I have seen references to the following when searching for a cmd to flush DNS
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
Which one is proper for Mavericks 10.9.3?

Mountain Lion, but should be applicable to Mavericks.
    DNS cache - Reset

  • Why wont dns flush in mac os 10.6.8 using sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

Use the following Terminal command to reset the DNS cache I put in sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and clicked return
it asks for the password then enter it tells me
    sudo: dscasheutil: command not found
    What am I doing wrong?
My email provider changed servers and now 2 of my macs can not get to the new dns.

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro and my device is doing the same. You would think with the high prices the consumers pay for these prducts, the least that can be done is Apple fixing this ****. This has been an ongoing ordeal for me since ab out mid October of last year. Firewall on, firewall off, it doesn't matter. The **** won't work. Tsk tsk tsk apple.

  • Flushing dns in lion

when attempting to locate dns entries in terminal, i get the response, "Unable to get details from the cache node." Now when I flush the dns, which is my ultimate goal, there is no response. I would like to confirm that the flush has worked and also see what remains in the "buckets" and "entries" within this region. can anyone help me? i'm not a computer whiz... just trying wipe down the computer and make sure it runs smoothly/correctly. i'm using lion on a mbp. thanks.

You need to issue the following command in Terminal:
         sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
You can check that the DNS cache has flushed by checking the system.log in Console, where the following should appear:
         Mar 21 13:45:50 MacBook-Pro mDNSResponder[12]: SIGHUP: Purge cache

  • IPhone flush DNS

The IP address of my mai server changed about 18 hours ago but my iphone still can't resolve to the new address, nor does Safari find the new address for that matter. How can I flush the DNS in my iPhone or do I have to just wait and, if so, how long do you think it takes ATT/iPhone to resolve to the new address?

If you changed the IP-Adress in the DNS Server of your Domain, you have to wait till 24 hours.
To flush caches on your iPhone just reset it.

  • PNY StorEDGE 128GB not sitting flush with MAC book PRO retina display 13" and was recommend to by apple!!

I was recommended by apple online suppot to purchase the pny storedge to increase the memory on my mac and was informed it would sit flush with the mac. After purchasing this online which was not cheap it arrived and I inserted it into my mac and low and behold it does not sit flush with my mac book and only fits in half way. Feeling a little bit robbed, can anyone advise if this is supposed to fit in all of the way?

I own both the mid 2013 13" MacBook Air and the late 2013 13" MacBook Pro retina display.  I have the same 128 GB StorEDGE card.  The SD card slot in the MacBook Pro is not as deep as the slot in the MacBook Air. The card fits nearly flush in the Air, but extends farther out in the Pro.  The Apple store staff were unaware of the card slot difference until I showed them. Nothing you can do other than return the SD card if you are not satisfied with it.

  • Post domain migration Outlook needs Flush dns intermittently

We have office in two cities X & Y, Y city is HO. Our entire DNS Server, Exchange server is in Z i.e. Head Quarters. Y city has file server, DC, Firewall. X & Y are connected via VPN tunnel. After our domain migration from abc.com to xyz.com only
X city few laptop users on wi-fi started getting issue of 'Outlook freeze- connection store/restore error' emails are stuck in outbox and not received. Only when we do ipconfig/release, renew, flushdns...it resolves the issue temporarily.
We found that issue might be on Wi-fi (Cisco SOHO - 3) we have changed the DNS setting of the WI-fi, pushed the DNS in host file, pushed in laptop settings, reduced the voltage of the wi-fi. Restarted the servers in Y city. Not sure if it is DNS or Wi-FI
issue. Still the problem persists. Please advice.

there is no easy way to find out the issue if it is related to client side configuration. as you already mentioned that it works after making DNS changes so the issue is somewhere at the Wi-Fi. it also depends how big is the mailbox, and if the outlook is
setup to cache mode or not.
For further troubleshooting I will use that same laptop on the wired network.
also if that Wi-Fi has Ethernet port I will connect a Hub/switch to it and then connect the laptop to the Ethernet.  This is tell me if the issue with Wi-Fi on the laptop or the Wi-Fi Access Point.

  • How do i flush dns on OS X 10.9.2

i need help how to flush dsn on osx 10.9.2

Get (free) Onyx for 10.9. You can do it with that.
Oops, wrong, thought it could do that.
    In Terminal
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
You will be asked for your admin pword when you run this command (copy and paste) You won't see it in any form when you type it in.
Actually, had a better look. Onyx can do that. Close all browsers before doing this.

  • "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".

Hi, i am trying to setup back to my mac at home but I get the error "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".
There is no documentation on how to solve this anywhere.
I have an Arris router set to bridged mode which is connected to a 5th generation airport extreme. I have tried using the google dns servers instead of the one assigned by the cable company in the AE but I still get the same error.
Any help would be much appreciated

New to BTMM, I got stung today with the silly DNS problem message. Solution:
    1) Flush DNS cache with:
    dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
2)System preferences > iCloud > untick BTMM then tick it again. The warning should have disappeared.
    Edit #1
Apologies for the noise. The warning has come back
    Edit #2
Just found out that BTMM is not compatible with double NAT. That's not helpful.

  • Used Mavericks DNS Flush Commands with 10.8.5

Mid 2011 Mac Book Air OS 10.8.5. In Terminal, I mistakenly used Maverick's DNS Flush commands dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
I note that 10.8.5 only requires the second command.
Any problems with this blunder? Tks.

    Lex,
Hmm, flushing DNS cache. With Safari on all of my Mac devices, I started having difficulty, initially on my iPad, accessing Zite and an internet radio, Tunein Radio Pro. After googling the error message "....cannot find the server", I put in the two 208....DNS numbers. I will now add the others you suggest. at some stage I read an article about flushing DNS caches, it suggesting using the Apple Store app. It seemed a good idea... The app is https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/clean-dns-cache-english/id628459184?mt=12. As a precaution I have loaded it only on my Mac Book Air, which is due for a clean install of Mavericks 10.9.2 when it is finalised. The app had a good review, and it would have been nice to have used it instead of using terminal, but I take your point that DNS caches are best left alone. Particularly for tyros! I will delete the app in due course. Thank you for the time and thought you have put in.
    Cheers

  • DNS problems with Snow Leopard. Can't upgrade to Mountain Lion either.

My Macbook Pro has been working quite well since I got it just over a year ago, until last week when I shut it down to go stay at my parents house. I turned it on when I got there and it automatically connected to the network because i go there often, however when I tried to open up a browser it would not work. I opened up several of the other browsers that I have but all of them kept saying they couldn’t connect to the server. I thought perhaps my dad had changed the router settings or something since last time I'd been there since the internet was working perfectly at my house only two hours previous. He said he hadn't changed anything and he was right, the internet worked perfectly through my sisters PC and through his ipad and my iphone. I later took it round to a friend’s house where it remembered his network too but still would not open addresses in the browser and when I finally got home to my house, I found I had the same problem. With every network I connected to I could update my apps and software, use my torrent client, ping certain IP's and connect with various other things that require internet connection, but the browser still never worked. After some research I came to the conclusion that it was most likely a DNS issue, I found this odd as I had not changed any sort of settings at all recently, except for turning the firewall on, which I turned off be3fore trying to troubleshoot. I  have tried virtually everything that has been suggested on the internet like Flushing DNS cache, resetting PRAM, bringing my network to the top, turning airport on and off, connecting through ethernet, renewing DHCP lease, using google IP as DNS, checking for set proxies, repairing disk permissions, resetting router, checking router settings, the list goes on and on. The last thing I tried was to copy the com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist file then delete the old one and paste the new one back in, since then my Mac cannot connect to the internet in any of the previous ways.
After pulling my hair out for days, I thought the only option left was to upgrade to Mountain Lion, which I was planning on doing anyway. After downloading it though, I came to the option to select the disk I want to install to only to see my primary and only disk open my Mac coloured faintly and telling me that "This disk cannot be used to start up the computer". After more research I found that there were a few issues, none of which I have. I’ve never used time machine so there is no issue with any set partition for it, I have no other partitions on it at all either so I cannot use the resizing trick that seems to help most people. I would normally just backup all my data at this point and do a fresh install, but haven't got the funds to purchase a another TB at this point and I have over 650GB worth of valuable data on the Mac. Could someone pleeeease help me!?!?!

You cannot go to Mountain Lion, as stedman1 states.
But you can upgrade to Lion, possibly.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2404
