.flv converter for Mac OSX

Does anyone know where I can find a program to convert .flv files to AVIs or MPEGs? Freeware, preferably.

Wow, that's handy. I have another question for this, though...
I tried using it to convert .mkv files as well, and got weird results. The first time I did it, it converted just fine (the .avi file was half the size of the .mkv file, though)... but the second time, it dropped frames like nobody's business. What's going on?

A collection of FLV downloader, FLV player, and FLV converter for Mac
Are you prepared to download FLV videos from YouTube, Google Video, metacafe, Yahoo! Video, Reuters.com, and many other video websites to play on your Mac or portable players, or do some further editing with certain editors? In my experience, assuming you have this idea, you must take advantage of three kinds of tools, including FLV downloader, FLV player, and FLV converter to achieve the goal.
Of course, I am not speaking this to depress you, but to share my collections of these tools to show my kindness. Sure, just for people who have these needs.
At first, I’ll introduce you several FLV downloaders for Mac, I have tried all of them, and basically they can achieve my goal of downloading FLV videos online.
    Free FLV downloaders for Mac:
    Web Video Downloader for Firefox
    Free Video Downloader for Mac
    Free YouTube Downloader for Mac
I also know some free FLV players, and recommend them to you here, hope they can assist you to play FLV videos on your Mac smoothly.
Free FLV player, Mac OS X:
    Adobe Media Player
    Wimpy FLV Player
QuickTime, after installation of the Perian video plugin
    SWF & FLV Player
    CorePlayer
(Tip: the above pieces of software can easily be searched in Google, so I do not give you the links here. I’m sure you can get them with ease.)
Well, we have gone through the FLV downloaders and FLV players in the above passages, now it’s time to introduce you a FLV converter for Mac. This program I recommend is Pavtube FLV Converter for Mac, which can perfectly convert FLV videos to a wide range of video formats, so that you can do whatever you like with the resulted videos, such as playing on your iPod, iPhone, BlackBerry, PSP, Apple TV, etc. or exporting to iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express to do further editing, or doing something else as you like. But how to use it? You may ask me. Take it easy, a step-by-step instruction is involved in the following part.
    1. Download, install and run this program
A sky-blue interface will be shown to you as follow:
    2. Add files, set output format and destination folder
Input FLV files to it by clicking button “Add”, and select a format as the output format in the drop-down list of “Format”, meanwhile, you can press “Browse” to specify the destination folder or just use the path set by default.
    3. Set advanced settings
Click button[b] “Settings”, the following interface will pop up. You can change the parameters like screen size, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate, etc. to optimize the output videos.
    4. Convert
This FLV Converter for mac can definitely complete the conversion at a swift speed with excellent quality, also it do not have the problem of audio-video out of sync. Therefore you need not worry about these issues. Moreover, if you want to add watermark as your own logo or reserve your copyright, you can totally do it with this program.
Ok, the introduction to the three kinds of tools which you may need while dealing with FLV videos is over, sincerely hope they can deliver you useful information, because you know, it’s my original intention.

    Hi Greg,
So if I understand correctly, your findings are:
Flash Player 10.1.85.3 + Flash Media Interactive Server = Jerky Video
Flash Player 10.0.x.x + Flash Media Interactive Server = Smooth Video
Flash Player 10.1.85.3 + Wowza = Smooth Video
And what about Flash Player 10.0.x.x + Wowza?
Also, if you could check the network traffic to confirm if it's Flash Player causing the issue or it is receiving it like that from FMIS.
    Cheers

  • AVC - Any Video Converter for Mac

    Hello,
I've been in search of a "complete" replacement for (now discontinued) VisualHub for converting "many"
video formats to the ones I use most frequently (DV, DVD, iTunes to name just 3).
Today, I found "Any Video Converter for Mac"
<http://www.any-video-converter.com/mac-software.php> but want to see if there are other Mac users out there, uh, using it. It's shareware: $44.95, so I'd like to know if it's worth the money b4 plunking down that much cash.
Anybody here who has a "review" on this app would be helpful.

    Brie,
Just the 3-minute clip length on the demo. This prevents testing it on full length videos when the original cannot be edited "natively" by Mac OSX. That is, when you have a five minute clip in .wmv format, no editing means the clip can't be snipped to less then 3 minutes for testing with AVC.
The obvious: Flip4Mac can be used for this but that's another $29.95 (or more- it's tier priced based on editing capabilities) on top of the $44.95 for the AVC app.
The other thing which caused me to ask for reviews by users of the paid version is that some formats required downloading additional codecs from the developer of AVC. I know from experience that installing codecs "willy-nilly" can lead to system instability. So it's either pay for the version of Flip4Mac which can edit the wmv type files or take a chance that the additional codec from the developer will let me edit a longer than 3-min. wmv file (with the aforementioned risk).
This is a relatively new developer, and I am not an early adopter. Logically, I thought there might be one of those early adopters out there who could point the way for the rest of us (video editors). The obvious goal: making more video stock available for use in iMovie projects.

  • Vmware Fusion Beta for Mac OSX Released Today

I don't know if this is the correct forum; if it's not, please pardon me.
VMware Fusion Beta for Mac OSX has been released today. This product, while the developers admit has some bugs in it, promises to make virtual computing a whole lot easier and would eliminate for many (not all) the need to use Boot Camp. The link for this new program is http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/fusion/
On that page you can find links for support and forums as well.
If you need a free virtual appliance to use with Fusion, then use this link http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/
Currently, there is no charge for using the BETA program. The VMWare folks are asking people to give feedback on their use of the product.
This is what we've been waiting for to purchase our new MAC. I can say without a doubt that from my own experience with Linux boxes, VMWare is the best virtual solution on the market. It's easy to configure and supports a wide variety of hardware and OSs. I can even move the virtual machines I created under Linux to my new MAC when I receive it.
The time has finally dawned for me to retire the last remaining pc towerbox in my home. My wife and I recently expunged one of those machines earlier this week and are eagerly looking forward to getting rid of the other one.
We am really looking forward to purchasing the new Mac Pro. What makes it especially appealing for us is it's scalability and the fact that we can use our current hardware, including our Kensington Track Ball mouse and current monitor with it, although we are taking a serious look at a new Apple Display as well.
Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to read this post. I am looking forward to joining and my wife is looking forward to rejoining the MAC community.

You might try the VMWare beta forum:

  • Opinions of iSkysoft iMedia Converter for Mac?

Looking for a solid, versatile movie converter app that I can use with iMovie. I have use several "free" apps, with varying degrees of satisfaction. iSkysoft iMedia Converter for Mac SEEMS to be very good, but I'm not finding a lot reviews of the Mac version. Can anyone:
    1) Offer opinions of this product, or
    2) Suggest good alternatives

Yes, you have to convert your files to QuickTime first.  That's because your camcorder records MPEG2 clips (from your other discussion thread)  You have to do the conversion no matter what.
MPEG Streamclip has a batch convert option that enables you to convert more than one file at a time.
But merging the clips in MPEG Streamclip or iSkysoft is not particularly useful if it doesn't work properly (out of sync audio, bad video quality ...)

  • The Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 10 removed the Java plugin from Firefox 5.0. How do I re-install it?

I've just installed Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 10 and can no longer run Java Applets from Firefox 5.0

    Dear Craig,
Macbook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB RAM
I'm sure that this is 64-bit
    CF 8.0.1 Enterprise Build 3080
I had moved the Java SE 6 to the top in both Plugin and Applications. The
correct version is showing in the terminal window. See below.
Last login: Thu Jun 18 11:27:09 on ttys001
    Beta-4:~ Colin$ java -version
    java version "1.6.0_13"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_13-b03-211)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.3-b02-83, mixed mode)
    Beta-4:~ Colin$
CF will not start. I have the activity monitor open, and when I start CF you
see it in the activity monitor for a few seconds as it starts up. When the
message process is completed in the terminal window CF disappears in the
    activity monitor.
    Any suggestions?
    C
    Hi, Colin,
My apologies but I forgot to ask 2 questions: (1) What kind of Mac you have
(Intel or PowerPC)? (2) What version of CF are you running and what installer
    did you choose (8 or 8.0.1, 32-bit, 64-bit, etc.)?
    To start, try the following:
    1. Normally you'd shut CF down first ... but that's not necessary for you
    2. Open Java Preferences again
    3. Select Java SE 6 and move it (drag) to the top spot in both section (Applet
    Plugin and Applications)
    4. Open Terminal
    5. Type java -version (you should see 1.6.0_13 as the new version)
    6. Try to start CF again
This may not work (I've had issues with it) but it's technically how it's
supposed to work. With the Java Preferences utility, you're visually setting a
default JVM (you can do it with commands in Terminal but this is much faster
    and easier).
If CF still won't start, look for the jvm.config file in your CF application
    folder (try /Applications/ColdFusion8/bin or
    /Applications/ColdFusion8/runtime/bin -- the latter is where a jvm.config file
is on my machine for a particular version of CF that's installed similar to
yours). You can override the JVM in this file but, hopefully, that won't be
    necessary!
    Best,
    Craig

    Hello,
I am in Germany and need to switch Photoshop to English.
The option is not available in the language preferences (attached screenshot)
I could only find an update for Mac OSX 10.4, but not 10.7?
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

Languages are serial number specific. You cannot change them on the fly. If your serial number supports it, you would have to install it in English. anything beyond that is a hack like stripping the localization files from the app package...

What is the latest update available for Mac OSX 10.5.8 that will allow me to get the latest update for iTunes.  I really need to update my iPhone and CAN'T!!  GRRRR!!!

Minimally you need Snow Leopard or greater:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
