Flv or swf

Could someone please explain the differences, advantages,
disagvantages of using either flv or swf.
is there a site with a comparison chart of the two
formats?

Close...
You can convert avi to flv, if you are using Flash 8 Media
Encoder you can also add cue points to the video. You can then use
these cue points to trigger events in flash, like starting a new
animation, making buttons or text appear, really anything you want.
The flv file then gets placed on the stage of a .fla file,
which is a flash file. When you add all the elements and code that
you want in flash you publish the swf file. Then you have a
webpage, an swf file, and a flv file that need to be uploaded to a
server.
If you are a beginner to flash and video I suggest going to
www.gotoandlearn.com and watching some of Lee's video
tutorials.

  • How do I convert from AVI or FLV to SWF file?

    First, I'm a complete Flash novice...this is the first time
    I've dealt with any FLV or SWF files. So, please forgive my
    ignorance on these topics. I have several small AVI files and have
    successfully converted them to FLV format via Premiere Pro CS3 and
    Adobe Media Encoder. But the client is also asking for SWF files of
    the same videos. I've looked and looked for a way to save SWF
    files. I tried pulling the video into Flash CS3, and saving as SWF,
    but since I know nothing about using Flash, I don't seem to be
    doing it correctly...seems like I'm getting just a single blank
    frame. I've looked at the dozens of third party programs that claim
    to be able to convert FLV to SWF, but the one I downloaded "Free
    Video to Flash Converter" generated an SWF file that doesn't seem
    to be playable anywhere. If there is a click-by-click method for
    using Flash to perform the conversion, I'd be ever so grateful.
    Again, please forgive my Flash-ignorance. Thanks for your help.

    Why doesn't Flash have a built-in capability to convert FLV
    to SWF? It's an obvious need and there are 3rd party programs of
    varying quality that do it. Why should people who have already
    purchased Flash need to look for something that handles this OK and
    then install it on their machines?

  • FLV to SWF to embed in a PDF?

    Hi All,
    I have been given a pdf (possibly built with InDesign?) and
    two flv files. I have to embed the video into the PDF. How do I do
    this, or more accurately, what is the best way to do this.
    I have Acrobat Professional 8 and the Professional Studio
    suite, including Flash Pro 8, at my disposal. I think I need to
    convert the flv to swf (how is this best achieved) and then embed
    the swf into the PDF using Acrobat Pro 8 (how is that best
    achieved)?
    The video's are no longer than 1.30 minutes, fairly static
    (man speaking at a desk and woman cooking).
    Thanks for any pointers.

    With the link tool of Adobe Acrobat you can overlay a link which does nothing.

  • Adding .flv or .swf in dreamweaver on top of background image

    Hi,
    I added an image  background 1900 x 1200 in dreamweaver, which will serve as my  background image for my web site. I would like to incorporate my .flv or  .swf on top of my background image. Although, when doing so, the .flv  or .swf gets placed under the background image and not on top. How do I  place the .flv or .swf file on top of my background image in Dreamweaver  CS5.
    Thanks

    Hi
    This sounds as though you are not actually using a  background-image but just placing an image on the page. To get any help  people will have to see your page and the code, can you provide a link  to a live page?
    BTW: Your background-image size is way to big for most users monitors, just thought you should know.

  • AS3: Could we convert .swf into .flv and .flv into .swf

    I'm searching for a program that can take an .flv and convert it to an AS3 .swf file. Is it possible in as3, Does anybody have any ideas?
    I am not talking about any third party converter software.
    Thanks,

    Hi swati61,
    I'm not sure why do you want to play an swf file in flv player. Will you post it on your website?
    If yes, here is a solution:

  • Exporting to flv or swf

    Is it possible to export an anmation made in Dircector MX
    2004 to an flv ot swf file? In 'Publish Settings', it allows me to
    create a shockwave file, but this creates a DCR file not a swf.
    Does anyone know if this is possible?

    Hi Neal,
    As Sean suggested, you can export to a video format and then
    convert that to a FLV.
    You cannot export to a SWF from Director.
    I've converted Director animation to video and the process I
    use is to export the
    frames as an image sequence, then import these into a video
    editing program and I
    add the sound there. That way, I can ensure i have the best
    quality of the images
    and I have total control over frame rate and other video
    formatting properties.

  • Timer over flv or swf

    Is it possible to put a flv or swf on a frame and in a frame above or below or for that matter on the frame itself have a timer that I could time to be the same as the flv or swf.  I would like to do the in actionscript 2.  The idea behind this would be if I had a 30 second video I could set the timer for 30 seconds so upon completion, or in other words after the 30 seconds it would gotoAndPlay the frame requested.  If so, would you have the command to do so?
    Thanks,
    mark

    I have initially loaded it as an flv using the file/import/import video.  I don't know how else to load it, but if there is a better way, I am certainly willing to learn.  I am making a quiz with video answers so I would like to keep this is AS2 since I know how to do this.  My initial thought was to create a timer that would keep the frame with the video open long enough for it to play then specify a frame to go to.  I have looked online and found alot of code to do this, but I haven't found anything that works.  I realize that I am new and probably don't have the knowledge, so I am looking for a simple solution if possible.
    Mark.

  • Do flv and swf have pixel sizes?

    I am putting some video at a website. The video is in FLV format. How do I know what size the pixels would be?
    Do flv and swf files have actual pixel sizes? Thank you!

    The video would have whatever size it is encoded as, and then the player could display that at whatever size it desired.

  • FLV in SWF over the web. Possible or Not?

    Is it possible to insert an FLV in a captivate project,
    publish it, and upload it to the web and watch it???
    apparently not. It works locally, it works if you publish to
    the 'C:\' drive and then download the file to another person's
    'C:\' drive and open it. But it doesn't work if you try to open it
    over a network.
    I'm simply creating a .cp file in a folder. Putting an .flv
    file in the same folder. Publishing the .cp file to create the .swf
    and .html all in the same folder. I even take out the full path to
    the .flv file so there is nothing but the filename. It doesn't work
    except locally on my machine.
    It seems ridiculous that this wouldn't work over a network or
    the web. It works if you embed video in a swf and insert it as an
    animation, but that is lame (super huge file size).

  • Need help with FLV type SWF playback in flash movie

    Hi,
    I have three external SWF files from a client without FLA
    sources. The SWFs were done 3 years ago by someone else so there is
    no way to modify the existing SWF files. These contain no
    interactivity but may involve nested clips on the main timeline.
    They are AS1 or AS2 files so they need to be done with AS2
    scripting to keep it simple.
    I need to call these SWF files inside another flash movie and
    play them in a player window as if they were video files with
    play/pause, seekbar and volume controls. The needed functionality
    is similar to FLV players. My controls will use custom graphic
    buttons and sliders mimicking the look of CNN video player window.
    Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to script these
    controls for SWF?
    Most likely I think I will load it in a clip and I am
    thinking that I will need to get the duration of the loaded swf in
    order to set up the seekbar.
    Thanks in advance,
    Attila

    I think your professor, or somebody, gave you directions with ActionScript 2 programming. In AS2, what oyu have here would have worked just fine. But, in AS3, you need to use a fairly different approach. Your buttons, and their instance name, can remain the same. But now, in AS3, you have to add event listeners in the following manner:
    yourButtonName.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, yourListenerFunction);
    In your case, you can do one of two things - A) assign a unique listener function to each button, or B) assign the same listsner to both functions:
    A)
    start_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startPolygon);
    stop_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, stopPolygon);
    function startPolygon(e:MouseEvent):void{
        polygon.play();
    function stopPolygon(e:MouseEvent):void{
        polygon.stop();
    B)
    start_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, controlPolygon);
    stop_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, controlPolygon);
    function controlPolygon(e:MouseEvent):void{
       if (e.target.name == "start_btn") {//Test for the name of the object that dispatched the CLICK event
          polygon.play();
       } else if (e.target.name == "stop_btn") {
          polygon.stop();
    When I'm using several buttons that do the same/nearly similar things, I favor approach B over A, as it keeps me to jsut one single function to deal with.

  • FLV with SWF trigger

    Hi there,
    i have read a few forums on how to do this but none seem to work for me.
    I have created a SWF file with a button which is action scripted to load a FLV video.  However i am still not sure that i am filepathing the inserted FLV file correctly.
    I have set the absolute file path including http://www.etc..com however the movie does not load
    is the _root correct?
    should this be cleared?
    any other thoughts/ideas
    Thanks

    That would be correct were you loading a SWF file.
    An FLV is a different type of file, and requires the use of the Video classes, or the FLVPlayback component to play it.
    If you place an FLVPlayback component on the stage, and set its contentPath property to the absolute path when you click the button, it will load and play your video.

  • ›Cut‹ imported FLV for SWF's output length

    Hello!
    I'd preferred to post my question on a better place, but I did not see one (as stupid as I am) .
    My question is a simple one. I got a video (als FLV) and emebed it into an AIR project. Now let my video has have an opening and maybe a closing sequence which I do not plan to export into my SWF wich is result of my work. The video (here) ›is‹ the maximum of timeline.
    How can I control that only from begin frame/time-stamp to end frame/time-stamp my SWF is exported, everthing before or after is cut (or igenored)?
    I do not paln to cut the project itself, save it as a cut version, no need to. It is just good enough to me to mark begin and end of the sequnce written out to SWF. Do I finally need to deal with ActionScript?
    Markus Erich

    Was my request so misunderstandable..?
    Can I set a ›left‹ and a ›right‹ margin for the SWF «snipplet» that is exported from the total project; dicertly within FlashCS4?
    Or do I neet ActionScript to control this?
    Or ist this impossible?

  • Adobe Air Bug: embedded .flv in .swf does not start - Connection Error

    Hi,
    I have embedded an .flv video into an .swf (using Captivate CS5)
    Then I use Dreamweaver and insert the swf into html.
    So far everything works ok, the video is displayed.
    Now I create an Air File in Dreamweaver.
    Result; The video is not displayed. Message: "Connection Error"
    I am not a programmer. Do I have to change the .xml file or is there any other fix for this?
    Thank you very much!
    Claus

    This would be somewhat usefull if we where calling the FLV from javascript.  However, both Clause and I are calling the flash object from the object tag. This is the default from Dreamweaver and also the prefered method for embeding a swf (my case) into a HTML Air app.  The codebase I am using to create my Air app is modified html5 from the client's current website.  (they would like this app to "look and work like the site")
    For me, all is good exept the video.  This app has to work offline or I'd just call the video from the website.
    Is there a working example somewhere out there we can look at?
    Life would be so much simpler if AIR supported the <video> tag in the webkit html engine.  I'll use h.264. I promise!

  • FLV and SWF Joining and Resizing - Help?!?!

    Greets,
    My wife is a copy writer, and as part of her portfolio, she has to go and capture the end result once it has been shot. In the current perplexing case, a web site has a small speaking host who will occasionally point to the right at an animation. The host is on the site as a FLV and the animation is a SWF. I guess it makes sense for them, but it certainly seems like they could have gone the extra mile to make it one file.
    Anyway, I have captured the FLV and the SWF, but am having a VERY hard time combining them, even after reencoding both into AVI. For the most part, they are very different dimensions, and when all is said and done, the result is blocky probably because the exported dimensions are too big.
    My main problem is that the video size is set at the time you set up a project, and no amount of trial and error on my part has allowed me to figure out what to set that to.
    Any help on any of this is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Is there any option to get source materials from the host? Do you have a link to this site so we can take a look?
