FLV quality discrepancies

In the standalone Adobe Flash Video Encoder, the following settings produce a crisp, clear flv:
- On2VP6 encoder
- Max data rate: 400 kilobits per second
- 10 fps
- Keyframe placement: automatic
Those same settings--used in Premiere CS3's "Adobe Media Encoder"--produce a very blurry flv.
This causes us an additional step in the workflow: we have to encode the file as an HD mpeg, and then we dump that file into the standalone Adobe Flash Video Encoder. The result is good, but time's a'wastin'.
Any insight?
Thanks.

Funny you should mention it... I was thinking along the same lines. I have a theory:
1.) In Adobe Media Encoder, when FLV is selected, the "deinterlace" checkbox is checked by default. This will slash the vertical resolution in half prior to scaling, which usually does not yield the nicest results.
2.) In the standalone FLV encoder, deinterlace is off by default. In this case, interlacing is "ignored" and the image is simply scaled down. The will generally provide nicer resutls for vertical size reductions that are less than half of the original resolution (such as the examples posted).
You may want to try ensuring that the deinterlace box is not checked in Adobe Media Encoder. If my theory is correct you should be able to achieve results similar to that of the standalone encoder.
That being said, you should check out HDV --> SD DVD thread as Andy suggested and have a look at my basic workflow example:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?224@@[email protected]/204
If you are able to get this going I can easily create a custom AviSynth script for your FLV output that should get much nicer results than you are currently getting. (Sharper, less jaggies, no lossy intermediary compression stage...)
The only downside is that you'll still need an "extra step", but it will obviate the need for creating an HDV mpeg intermediary file.
Instead, you would create a lossless AVI file at the same resolution and framerate as the final FLV. You would use the standalone FLV encoder to convert this AVI to your final product.
Also: Have you thought about using 15 fps instead of 10? It seems to me like a better option but that is just my opinion.
If you use my suggested method you could also achieve a very nice conversion to 12 fps. This would be accomplished by converting your interlaced 30i source to 60p and then selecting every 5th frame.

  • Adobe Media Encoder. Poor FLV Quality

    Greets,
I'm using Adobe Media Encoder (AME) to output a CS4 Premiere Pro project at 515x240.
I created a custom "Desktop" Premiere project setup with 515x240 and square pixels. That project previews look fine. The preview in AME looks fine. The output is horrible. No matter what I set my FLV output settings for the images and text are horribly stretched. And yes I am setting the output also for 515x240 square pixels.
    Format: FLV
    On 2 VP6
    515x240
    Frame Rate: 30fps
    VBR Two passes
    Bitrate: 1,500 (AME's default)
    Min Bitrate: 80
    Max Bitrate: 120
    Bitrate Variability: 80
    Here is an example... http://www.effectwebmedia.com/video.html
I'm pulling my hair out. Any ideas? Thanks!

    A couple things:
    1) VP6 and H.264 are codecs that operate in "mod16". What that means is that they begin by dividing a video image into 16x16 blocks, followed by 8x8, 8x4, and 4x4 blocks. This makes for a more efficient encode. Your 240 dimension is fine (240 / 16 = 15), but the 515 dimension could be slightly problematic (515 / 16 = 32.1875). The codec will stretch or compress the image to fit into that dimension, and so can result in a lower quality encode. If you can, try encoding at 512x240, by cropping a couple pixels in the horizontal dimension. May not make a big difference, but it's good practice with these codecs.
    2) To me, your original encode looks like the product of Adobe's less-that-capable deinterlacing scheme. You're dealing with progressive assets and a progressive target. I'd submit that the reason your 1280x720 encode looks better is that you're using a progressive preset, with no deinterlacing necessary when exporting. One thing you could check is the field order of your original sequence setup--if it's interlaced, I'd say you have your answer. If it's progressive--well, then I'm wrong :) However, you didn't explicitly say this in your original post, but it's worth a look.
If it is interlaced, I don't think you can change that after the sequence is started, so just create a new sequence with the proper progressive settings, and copy and paste the original sequence contents into that one. Now, when you export, there will be no need for deinterlacing.
    Anyway, that's my guess...

  • Acro 9 pro extended flv quality

When I try creating a document that has an .flv in it via Word 2007 (using the "acrobat" menu group) it seems as if the .flv file gets resized in some way. In the process the quality degrades tremendously.
If I just play the original .flv file in a player it looks great.
I'm trying to create video "how-to" training, and this workflow would be ideal, but not if I can't keep the quality. I feel like I must just be missing a setting or something, but I cannot figure it out.
    Any suggestions? thanks.

It's simply a new dumb "feature" by Adobe, referred to as "EchoSign", see here on how to fix their mess:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotes/11/11.0.03.html#echosign-in tegration
(the value to be set to "0" in the registry should be of the DWORD type, I suppose... they did not even care to provide a complete "fix"...)
Funny experiment: under Word 2013, type "=rand(5)" in a blank document, it generates a dummy placeholder text. Save as PDF, open in Acrobat XI, ta-daa! Acrobat hallucinates and sees something to sign in there

  • FLV quality looks better than F4V, what am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
I exported a small clip as a on2vp6 flv, a h.264 f4v, and a h.264 mp4 file with the adobe media encoder cs4. Each file is the same clip, exported with pretty much the same settings. Resolution: 640x480, 0.5mbps target bit rate, 29.97 fps.
Everything I read says that for a given file and a given bitrate, h.264 should provide better video quality when compared to a h.263 flv file. I would like to know what I am doing wrong, because the h.264 files look worse than the flv file. I have provided download links for a short demo clip in each format.

    http://www.filefactory.com/file/af5gc71/n/fl7756n_29_640x480_500kbpsbr_mp4
Why does the clip look better in h.263? It seems that everything I encode at low bitrates looks better in h.263 which leads me to believe I am doing something wrong.

Okay, that is true, they are different codecs. But even adobe says:
Q: How does H.264 compare with the current video formats supported in Flash Player?
A: Flash Player supports the Sorenson Spark video codec (based on H.263) and On2 VP6. H.263 is the predecessor of H.264 and was designed for teleconferencing applications, at 64k rates. H.264 delivers even higher quality at lower bitrates. H.264 will deliver the same or better quality when to compared to the same encoding profile in On2. Factors you should consider when choosing a format include the complexity of the content, the desired reach, ability to archive, and licensing considerations.
    at
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flash_Player:9:Update:H.264#Q:_What_is_H.264.3F
Are there any tricks to getting the h.264 to look "better" than the h.263? Like, the h.264 version of the video doesn't even look close to as good, and I think that the f4v version looks worse than the mp4, which I don't really understand since they are both h.264 files. The footage is from a canon XL2 and the original source is ntsc 720x480. Is there anything special I should be doing for encoding in h.264 instead of h.263. The video is going to be only for the web.

If you are asking how to connect your tape player to a new iMac with the combined in/out mini jack?
Then a USB Griffin iMic or a RCA to USB Audio Interface is your best bet.

FLV files need an embedded player. I would heartily recommend
    Wimpy Wasp
which I've used extensively without a glitch
    http://www.wimpyplayer.com/products/wimpy_wasp.html
If your site is hosted on a Windows 2003 server, then the
    server has to be
configured to recognize FLV as a mime type. It may be that
    your server
hasn't been configured in this way. Unless you're running
    your own server,
this isn't a DIY job and you'll have to contact your host.
Some hosts are not helpful and will tell you they can't do
    this or they
don't offer 'streaming media' as part of their hosting plan.
    I got around
that problem uploading my FLVs to a friend's server who uses
    a Linux server
and using absolute links to channel the FLVs through my
    domain. This problem
    does not affect Linux servers.

  • Help or Advice needed about converting my movies... i think?!! Thanx!

    Hi, hope someone can help...
I'm not a real web designer but over the last few years I've taught myself how to make web pages & do some coding so that I can make basic sites & galleries for me & my girls...
Well I've just realized what a huge collection of movies we've got now, and I've started putting them on to web pages - they are WMV...
But half the time they don't work, especially on a MAC ect...
Then i came across this blog at Lady Sonia dot net and all her movie clips work perfectly, all on the same page, and when i right-clicked them they say
    'about adobe flash player 10'
So my question is would anyone be kind enuff to tell me how I can change all our wmv movie clips into whatever they need to be so they work like that???
or maybe someone does that kind of job and i could pay sum1 to do them for me???!!! lol
I doubt anyone wants to do that lol so in that case would anyone point me to the help page I need to read for this exact issue, because I have tried F1 as many people on here say and it took me to firefox and was no help at all, i've been searching flash help sites all night and i have no idea what i'm reading its soooo confusing, so if anyone knows a place they can point me to that would be really great!
    Thanx!

Hey thanx for explaining - and for helping now!
Ok the code is pasted below, but what i actually did was in dreamweaver
    > insert media > insert flash > inserted the flash clip
but that didnt work, so i tried
insert media > insert plugin >  insert the FLV  movie clip
    but it says
'unable to find the plugin that handles this type of media'
altho i now have 2 clips playing automatically!!!

  • Adobe Media Encoder Quality Issues  for 4:3 FLV Files

I am working in a 480x360 window for a FLV file. Whether I export a 60 minute presentation or a 10 second pre-roll FLV file, the rendered file quality is distorted and poor. I have done the same work in CS3, but as I changed computers, the CS4 was installed.
With the video presentation, orginally capturing the video is set as .9 Pixel Aspect Ration, but interpreting the footage to 1.0 is also an issue.
The quality of video that is being produced is much worse then CS3 and unuseable in most cases.
    Frame Dimensions: 480x360
Frame Rate: Same as source. (29.97)
    Endoding: CBR
    Passes: 2
    Bitrate: 500
    Audio: Mono / 48

  • Problem with losing quality in exporting FLV

First I should emphasize that I am new to Adobe's products, and am learning it on the fly as part of a intelligent tutoring system design project. So I apologize for my lack of technical knowledge in advance. Rest assured I have put much effort in attempting to solve this problem on my own and by referencing this forum and other web sources, but sadly with no success.
FYI, I am using the CS4 Master collection.
My question pertains to retaining the quality of my video once I export it to .flv format via Media Encoder from Premiere Pro. My main video source is an .flv file that i have imported into my media browser. Initially I ran into a problem with the importing because it did not recognize H264 as having any media, and so I had to convert to Sorenson format to get it to import successfully. But it seems to have imported just fine without any loss of quality in the workspace. So that isn't my main issue but perhaps it is related.
I am having major issues with losing quality upon export back to .flv format - which is the format I am required to use - the video is being imbedded within a larger program and so it needs to have a smallish file size. For the life of me I cannot figure out any combination of settings that works. If I select same as source then I end up with a video that is surrounded by black borders. This may because the workspace is larger than my imported file. I have attempted to enlarge it to fit the safe margins but it hasn't helped. If I resize my output video to 640 x 480 - which is what I want - I get a shrinked video with black borders. If I crop the input to what I want I just lose quality - but I lose quality either way. I really want to accomplish this without increasing the bit rate (and thus the file size). I have tried just about every setting available and I still lose the quality. Is this just inevitable? Is there a plugin that would help? From what I can it seems that Adobe has more problems dealing with .flv than with other video formats, but I haven't found anything that pertains to this issue specifically.
Otherwise does anyone know of any other programs that can edit .flv files and offers multiple video & audio tracks?
Thanks in advance. If anything needs clarification let me know.

Ah yes I left out that detail. My source video is 640 x 480 also so the output is not an increase in size.
This is different from my sequence settings. Which is 1440 x 1080 16:9 ratio. Pixel Aspect Ratio is HD anamorphic 1080 (1.333).
I am assuming that this needs to be changed but I can't figure out how to do that (sequence settings are greyed out). Should I just start a new project?

  • FLV movies now poor quality

    Hi All,
I'm really struggling with this. In the past using DWCS3 I
have embedded FLV movie files into websites without a problem. For
    example,
    http://www.davehollington.co.uk/Video/video%20strangers.html
However, no matter what I do now with DWCS4, whenever I
embedd an FLV movie, the playback quality is jerky and poor. For
    example,
    http://www.cupcakemakeandbake.co.uk/lookatus/ourvideos.html
Even if I embed the first movie into a new page, it results
in a jerky (as if frames are skipping) playback.
I am not doing anything different. So, can anyone tell me if
they experience the same issue or even what I can do to resolve it?
    Cheers.

It isn't DW, but a combination of how you compressed the
    video, the
speed of your Web servers, the speed of your (my) connection,
    and all
    the connections in between.
In my case, both of those videos paused for buffering.
FWIW, I see you compressed cupcakemakeandbake_VP6_512K.flv
    with:
    Video: 364 Kbps
    Audio: 128 Kbps
For a total 492 K throughput rate. For my connection (basic
    cable,
typically 5 MB), I get my best results when I compress for a
    total of
300 Kbps. Likewise for my clients, though I send those
    through a
    streaming server.
And even though strangersinthenight.flv is compressed at a
    much higher
rate, my connection to davehollington.co.uk (talk-101) is
    much faster
    than my connection to cupcakemakeandbake.co.uk (123-reg) -
    today. In
fact, my tracert to cupcakemakeandbake.co.uk timed out at 30
    hops twice
    while writing this.
    Suggestion:
Try compressing the videos to a lower total throughput rate
    with the
software you're using to create the .flv files.
You could also try a test with the cupcake video on your
davehollington.co.uk server to see if it is running from a
    better host.
I can tell you that my connection to cupcakemakeandbake.co.uk
    from here
California isn't ideal at this moment.

  • Video quality with flv component

    Hi,
I'm trying to improve the reproduction of a video incorporated into a website. The original .mov was 60 MB at 1280 x 720px. Using the Adobe media encoder I converted to FLV ( to add cue points for several small mc animations) and reduced dimensions to obtain filesize of 12MB. Video was brought into the SWF with the flv component. File loads quickly enough online- not too much in the way of delays waiting for video to start etc, however the reproduction is a little jumpy in several places and a little out of sync. I'm wondering if this is completely a result of the conversion process or whether the flv component might also be struggling with this filesize. I believe there is a FLVPlayback 2.5 component I released after my flash version CS4. Could anyone advise if I would gain improvements in the reproduction if I used this instead ?
Also - throughout the video I appear to have gained what looks like borders around the video, but only on the left and right sides, not all the way around (see screenshot). I'm not entirely sure whether this is a result of the conversion process with the adobe media encoder or whether this is something which has resulted within the flash file. And also on the last frame, the background colour of the video is completely strange. I had set to match the webpage, however as you can see in the screenshot attached, there's a strange graduation in colour that simply does not make sense to me - I would very much like to resolve as it looks very unprofesional.
Grateful for any assistance with any of the above issues
Thanks so much in advance !

On your first point of quality and file size, they are really un-related. Only when you concider the video bitrate and display dimensions can you judge whether a particular file size will result in a good quality or poor quality video. The FLV Playback component really does not affect the quality one way or another.. it only displays what it's told to display. If you have other issues like
"however the reproduction is a little jumpy in several places and a little out of sync"
it's more likely that something was introduced during the conversion process.
But first, a little review of video bitrate:
    Video bit rate
One of the principle of goal setting is to "Begin with the end in mind". In this case it'll be very hard to give good recommendations because the end is not defined. So I'll just make a few assumptions and you can correct me as needed.
First, I'll assume that since you are converting to Flash, you want to deliver this video over the Internet. If that's true, then we'll have to make some assumptions on the Internet connection download speeds of your potential viewers. Let's just say that most have at least a 1.5Mb connection or faster.
OK, that would mean that a video bitrate of half that should usually provide a video download that is not interupped by buffering (most of the time anyway). So assuming a video bitrate of 750kbps, what would the optimum display dimensions be?
Before we decide, here's a little info about bitrate. For highest quality playback, the video bitrate is tied directly to the display dimensions. That is, the larger the display, the more incoming data is required to properly display the video. Think of bitrate in terms of a can of paint. If you have 1 quart of paint, you might be able to do a very nice job on a 32 X 24 foot area. But if you try to stretch that same amount of paint out over a 64 X 48 foot area, the coverage will not be nearly as good and you get poor results.
In the same way, a video displayed at 640 X 480 pixels will require 4 times the bitrate as a video displayed at 320 X 240 pixels to produce the same quality. So for example a video with a bitrate of 100kbps, displayed at 160 X 120 will produce the same quality results as a video with a bitrate of 1600kbps if displayed at 640 X 480.
So to boil it all down, video bitrates of 750kbps, even up to 1000kbps can usually get delivered of the Internet on most high speed connections. Higher bit rates may work for really fast connections but will cause problems for viewers with slower connections. Video display size has a direct bearing on the final quality. In the 750 to 1000kbps range, display size should be kept around 450 or 500 width max (and whatever height the aspect ratio calls for). Yes it can be displayed larger, but the quality will suffer.
Sound like your audio settings are fine, especially for Internet delivery.
As for framerate, maintain the original raw video framerate for best results. So if the video was shot at 24fps, leave it.
As for video converters, do you have the Flash 8 Video Converter? It works just fine for video to be delivered over the Internet. Remember, you are taking a Cadillac version of video (h.264 HD) and stuffing it into a Chevy body to get it to work over the Internet.
As for slight borders in the display, it's most likely that somewhere in the conversion process or setting the dimensions of the FLVPlayback that the display/video dimensions got mismatched... even by a few pixels. So video is 480 x 360 while FLVPlayback is 480 x 356 or something like that. There is also the possibility that the FLVPlayback is trying to maintain the correct aspect ratio but the dimension is just a little off. So if the display is a little too short for the width, you could get black bars on either side. If the display is a little too narrow for the height, you will get black bars top and bottom.
So play with the display dimensions and see if you can correct it. If you can't, it may be in the video itself... test in another, FLV video player.
Best of luck on your project!
