FLV vs WMV file size
I just encoded a 13 minute video to FLV and to WMV, and at 2
different sizes. Not only was the 240x180 FLV file nearly the same
file size (45MB) as the 320x240 FLV, but the WMV files were about
half that size (appx 27MB). Can someone explain this to me? I
thought FLV was supposed to be about the same file size as WMV.
That is definitely not the case!

Are you in Flash 8? Flash 8 has a much more efficient
encoding process than
MX 2004 did. Either way you should check out this article.
I've found it
very helpful in choosing the right settings for FLVs

As far as I know, if you want to convert .flv to .wmv file,
you need a third party to help you complete the progress, such as
Moyea FLV to video converter which
can convert FLV files to video and audio formats such as WMV, AVI,
MPEG, MP4,3GP, MOV, MP3,3G2, WMA, DV and etc. -
FLV file size vs longer WMV file
When I created a FLV file of a live presentation (narrator on
screen demonstrating products, etc), it came out to 8 mb for a
320x240 window size. However, one of my trainers just recorded a
Camtasia (or was it Captivate, we have both) presentation, which is
basically a narrated Powerpoint presentation. It is over an hour
long, full screen and only 6 MB! This is a major difference. Does
anyone know why this would be? I have a couple of theories, but I'd
like to hear from someone else.Sure - I use both so here you go:
FLV is a movie file. There are so many still images depending
on FPS and there is also a sound file embedded inside (so to
speak). So if you have a 1 minute video at 30 FPS - you have 1800
still images in a row that are compressed.
Captivate creates a swf file, basically a lot of keyframes
and some still images. If you created a file in flash with a few
backgrounds and some mouse movements the file will not be that big.
Every background used is just a still image, so there is probably
about 1700 less images used for this project.
So, Captivate is not creating a movie, but a swf file like
Flash. If everything was exported from Captivate as a mov, mpg, or
avi the file size would increase dramatically. The sound is also
probably encoded very low, like 128k which makes the file more
compact.
Hopefully now you can see why there is a big size difference
in the two. -
WMV file not converting to FLV Properly
I am trying to use the Flash Video Encoder to convert a WMV
file that a client provided to me into an FLV file. The audio works
fine in the FLV, but the image stays stuck on the first frame
through the whole movie.
This file needs to be uploaded by tomorrow. I've tried
compressing with about 6 different compression settings (both in
Sorenson and the newer On2 VP6 codecs).
I'm about to rip my hair out.
I even downloaded a trial version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3
to export it and it's taking an hour to do so. My suspision is that
it wont work in there either.I would recommend converting the WMV file to an intermediate
format before encoding to the FLV format. In general, advise your
clients to give you a better source video format--WMV is already
compressed, and recompressing it just deteriorates the video
quality. (I'm sure you know that already, but I just had to point
it out.)
In the past, I've used River Past's tools to convert WMV to
an AVI file which I then convert to FLV:

Converting WMV files to QuickTime and file size
I have QT Pro and I have no problem doing a "save as..." for converting WMV files to .mov. I also have Flip4Mac converting the file to be viewed in QT first.
My question is that if I do a straight-ahead "save as..." it'll make the file's size about 25% larger. If I try to do "export" with default settings it takes far longer and I have an even larger file. I've also tried playing with different compression in QT to save these files and haven't come up with anything that works better. Is there a way to manage the file size so it's the same or smaller, not bigger?
Thanks in advance all!File size is dicated by the bitrate of the file. From my review of (thousands) of WMV files there appears to be some compression in the WMV format that is not reapplied when save as to a MOV container is performed. You can see in get info the WMV file say 100MB has maybe 125-150MB of data when it is fully loaded in Quicktime.
Thus save as does not apply the WMV compression the same as native WMV is all I can assume and the new QT file (MOV container) is bigger than the source file is.
Exporting to any new QT format (say H264) is going to make a file that is dependent on the new QT bitrate you select but if it is higher than the bitrate shown in the Get Info Inspector box when the original WMV has been opened it will be bigger without a doubt. So if you have a 3Mb/sec WMV file that you export to 700 kb/sec for iPod basic it should be 1/4 of the size. Use 5Mb/sec fo Apple TV it should be 2/3 larger.
I rarely use QT Pro to export and when I do I don't use default settings. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which offers easier control of variables, batch file processing, deinterlacing and other things and it is free. -
Exporting an flv that doesn't stutter and is a small file size
i know you can make an h264 and change the extension to flv but that doesn't help me with this particular issue: I am working in fcp 5.0.4. I have a two minute sequence. When I use the On2 plug-in and export an flv out of fcp I get a 30 MB file and I need to get it down to more like 2 MB! Plus, it stutters. I've tried 15fps and 30 fps. 15 looked better. How shall i get this file to 1. not stutter and 2. be a lot smaller in file size? thanks so much!

Decreasing file size on .wmv files
I have a Premiere Pro project that consists of an audio file that is 8 MB and about 12 JPEGs which total around 5 MB. When I export to a .wmv, using the Windows Media format and the NTSC Source to Download 512kbps preset, the file size ends up being about 100 MB.
I created files in Elements that had the same size of content, where the wmv file was less than half the size the I'm getting out of Premiere Pro. I'm guessing it's just my lack of understanding of the software?
What I need to do is create a video that is usable by a large audience (which is why I chose wmv, but I'm not set on that format) and is smaller than I'm currently creating (preferably around 50 MBs).
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
DarrenStanley - thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how to answer the question. Maybe if I give a more detailed account of my project, it will help.
I recorded an MP3 via a microphone through Audacity. I made the Audacity project, then chose "Export as MP3".
I then took a Powerpoint I had previously created, and did a "Save as" and chose JPEG as the file type. This saved each slide as a JPEG (about 12 total slides).
I first imported the audio file into Premiere and then imported the 12 slides.
As I listened to the audio, I lined up the length of each powerpoint slide with the audio portion pertaining to it. At the end, I had the combined visuals lasting the length of the audio, with each slide showing as long was appropriate.
Then in Premiere, I clicked on the Timeline window, then selected File>Export>Media...
In the Export Settings window, I have the following setting (on the right half of the window):
Format: Windows Media
Preset: NTSC Source to Download 512kbps
Comments: NTSC Source to Download 512kbps
And then of course the Output name, and the boxes for Export video and export audio are checked.
At the bottom of the Export Settings Window, it says Estimated File Size: 246 MB.
The file ends up being about 100MB.
I hope that helps, and that it isn't too much information. Again, thanks for the quick response.

.flv file size too large
I recently purchased the Premiere Pro CS3 upgrade in order to produce flash video for our website because I was told Flash is the way to go for video delivery. We have used Real Media for a while to provide our audience with both the option to stream the video or to download it, but for several reasons I wanted to move away from that format.
However, I have to say I am disappointed in the results I've gotten with my first .flv encoded movies. The file sizes I'm getting for decent quality video are around approx 140 MB compared with approx 75 MB for the same clip when exporting to Real Media (.rm file). That's nearly twice the file size and the quality is even a little worse than the smaller Real Media file.
I am running Win XP and exporting finished high quality 80 minute .avi clips (yes, very long, but shortening the clips is not an option)to Adobe Media Encoder>Adobe Flash Video (I'm using the "NTSC Source to 256kpbs" preset, using the "On2 VP6" codec, with a bitrate of 200). Our priority is High Quality video but at the same time it would be nice to have a reasonable file size too. I simply don't understand why the file size is so large compared with Real Media when the quality is roughly the same. Am I doing something obviously wrong. Please help. It's worth playing with keyframes, possibly increasing the number between them by a substantial amount. I'm also a little surprised that a 256k preset would have a video bit rate of 200. That strikes me as a little high by the time you add in audio and try and cram it down a congested 256k line.
Do you have the settings you're using to export the Real files? Real 10 is a great codec as far as quality/bit rate. It's just a pity it lacks in other ways. -
Hello,
I have an flv file and the same flv file in an swf file. Both
files are the same size. So, it seems that it doesn't matter,
whether you import an flv file or an swf file, to keep your file
size small. Is this correct ?
Thanks,
Paul> I have an flv file and the same flv file in an swf file.
Both files are
> the
> same size.
That's just a coincidence.
There is different baggage / overheads with FLV vs SWF. So
you will usually
get some differences .. sometimes SWF smaller, other times
FLV. However,
the actual video payload is the same in both, and the audio
is similar too,
and they are the bulk of the file size. So there shouldn't be
a huge
difference in file size between SWF an FLV.

WMV to h.264 files size issues
I am using the Flip 4 Mac to view my WMVs with QT Pro 7. I want to export them to H.264 (or other MAC friendly format), but the new file has a size thats about 3x larger than the WMV file. Example a 233meg WMV file went to a 779meg file in the h.264 format. I would us iSquint or Podner but I do not want to reduce a 640x480 res to the smaller size of 320x240. Any ideas on how convert WMV Files and not lose any of the res, quality, and keep the files size about the same or smaller.
Trucker (does that mean you drive trucks?) I did for thirty years and am glad to be seeing the world from a 19 monitor as opposed to a huge windshield.
If the files play (via the flip4mac component) why not just leave them alone?
Any time you export, format to format or container to container, you introduce artifacts and could be adding to the file size by not using the source compression scheme.
Many WMP files use very low audio quality settings. Have you opened some of your exports and used the Movie Info window to compare settings?
H.264 has amazing video playback qualities and a 320X240 export can be viewed at "double size" without so much of a penalty to video quality.
Check the audio settings at export, too. Try to match the original source file settings. -
Share/export to wmv-9 format stops at 2-3 meg file size???
I cant seem to export/share a movie created in IMovie using the quicktime option and sharing it as a wmv-9 format. It stops after a minute or so and does only a short amount of the whole movie,2-3 megs, I don't have QTPro and wonder is the basic version has a limit on the output size of the wmv file? OR if I upgrade to PRO will it do the whole movie, 10 minutes in size??? I hate to have to convert to avi then go to a pc and convert to wmv..as I need a wmv as final output!
You must be using the flip4mac software to even be able to export to Windows Media Player format.
It requires QT Pro and only exports up to 30 seconds when used in "trial" mode. -
FLV encoder crashes on all .WMV files
When trying to view the settings or start que on any .wmv (windows Media Video) file I drag into the flash video encoder, the program immediately crashes. I've tried many different WMV files from different sources, all the same outcome.
Is this a known issue with FLV encoder or something wrong on my end? Hopefully I dont need to buy a 3rd party converter.
Thanks for any insight!
a.6Did you try file - import - import video? That's what I just did with this wmv http://www.charliegooddog.org/pinky/petOfWeek.html it worked for me that's with cs3.

How I calculate the flv file size whe I recording from camera and microphone?
Hi all:
I'm recording video from my webcam and my microphone.
I would like to know how I can to determinate via some formula, approximately, the result file size due to camera and microphone configuration.
I show you my actual configuration:
// setup cam
cam = Camera.get();
// setting dimensions and framerate
cam.setMode(320, 240, 30);
// set to minimum of 70% quality
cam.setQuality(0,70);
// setup mic
mic = Microphone.get();
mic.setRate(22);
Only ohert question:
What enconders are using to encoder video and audio by default?
Regards, Roberto.I'd say 9.4 mb is correct. Email attachments always put on a lot of weight, so 12 mb as an attachment is probably right too.
Why don't you use a free service like Filemail? It's very easy to use, and you dont't have to sign up to use it. -
Exporting FLV using On2 - acheiving small file size
My 2 minute 20 second fcp sequence is exporting at 15fps, max streaming br 2000, sized at 657x369. Encoding mode CBR-Streaming, 2-pass, kf Max 60. This resulted in a 34 MB file that I fear is too big for the Interactive Media folks to put in an email. It's critical that this thing doesn't stutter. Any way for me to bring down the file size w/o losing quality?
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10714342#10714342
Please do not post duplicate questions.
The only way to reduce file size is to:
a. reduce the image size
b. reduce the frame rate
c. reduce the run time
d. increase the compression
All of the above will affect the final image. Whether the resulting image is acceptable can only be determined by you and designated viewers.
imho Sending a video in an email is usually a bad idea. Better is a link where they can find a streaming version ...
