Flying Blind into a Mac OS X Server Password Reset

Let me preface my questions with the note that I am experienced with general OS X user administration but I am coming off of 5 years of heavy Windows network consulting and administration. I'm comfortable with the command line (have a good deal of *nix experience) and patient enough to read everything when solving problems of this sort.
I am going into a site with almost zero documentation, where the existing network admin was the jack of all trades in IT support for the company. The old admin up and quit and now we have no access to login to the Mac OS X Server. I do not know if it is running open directory (all os x clients are 'local' users but each user does have the ability to login to shares on the server with a user/pass).
I believe the server is 10.5.x
We need to reset the admin user password, but if it is running OD will I run into issues if I follow the standard reset using the install disk?
How can I determine if it is actually running open directory without a logon account?
Suggestions welcome! I'm searching apple support, forums, and googling thoroughly as well, but figured posting here can't hurt.

Using the standard password reset should not affect other accounts.

Here's the story:
We are migrating our users to a new fileserver running OSX Server 2.2.2 on 10.8 from an existing 10.4 server. We have prepopulated the user accounts with the same login names as our old server, and set temporary passwords for each user that they will need to reset. The plan was to have each user set their custom password via the built in web portal. We've got Windows and Mac Users, so we are expecting at least the windows users will have to set their passwords this way, as the Mac users can be forced to reset their password at first login.
The issue is that we are are implementing stronger password requirements on the new server, but the password reset portal doesn't seem to communicate that at all. When entering the existing password, and a new password that is not strong enough, we get the error: "Your password could not be changed. Please retype your old password and try again" which is misleading because it is an issue with the new password being too weak, not the old password being incorrect.
Is this normal behavior for this reset portal? It's pretty basic, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's just the way it is, but we are looking for a way to keep it as simple as possible for our users, and to avoid unnecessary confusion.
For the record, our password requirements are:
password minimum length = 8 characters
passwords must contain:
at least one letter
at least one number
at least one special character
differ from last 5 passwords used
be reset on first login

Which i tried. I ran through the help link above which all seemed to work until the end... and i got this error...
Which means i couldn't get to the part that sets up a new user. :-(

Email server password reset

I have Verizon Email on my phone, ipad, web-based (yahoo/verizon.net) and outlook iook.com. At one time all were working but I think I reset a password and then only a few worked. I have tried new password on all, changed back to the old password on others and didn't touch settings on ipad but can't seem to get them all working again. I would like to start fresh with a password reset so I can set up accounts on all devices again and try to remedy this frustrating issue. I have most recently reset the password again to try setting up my Email on my phone only to receive a password authentication error. I have set up before with success so I know I am setting up correctly and just a very frustrating password issue. I am also OK with deleting my primary Email account and setting it up again within the account if I have to. I just want this fixed so that I have my personal Email on all of my devices working properly and without frustration!

try doing one computer at a time. don't rush it. have you checked all the settings are correct in outlook.
I know Verizon recently changed settings for their mail servers.
incoming should be - pop.verizon.net port 995
outgoing should be - smtp.verizon.net port 465 SSL enabled.

Logging into a mac via the kanaka plugin resets nds password

test network environment: 1 NetWare server 6.5sp8 + 1 SLES 10SP4 with OES2.0.3 server + 1 mac client running 10.5.8 with kanaka 2.7 plugin and client installed
I can login to the mac with an eDir user account.
once I logout of the mac I can't log back in with that same account on either a mac or a windows machine until I rest the password for the user in console1.
any ideas? This is my first attempt at introducing kanaka into eDir so I may be missing something obvious

Sorry! I found the problem. My Universal Password Policy was configured to "remove the NDS password when setting the Universal password".
Now onto my next problem.

I cant log into my mac and the admin password is correct. What should I do? It lets me log into the guest just fine.

Someone please explain the easiest way to fix this.

You've either typed it in incorrectly or you typed in the wrong password. Unlock caps lock. That doesn't work:

Azure Pack Self-Serve Password Reset

I currently have Azure Pack installed and I am trying to setup the notification for users to reset their passwords, account validation, and forgot password.I have exchange 2013 internally that I would use as a relay, and when I setup the relay in azure pack

Just for sanity I deleted and made a new receive connector with the following settings.
Internal-Relay
Security -> Anonymous Users
Scoping -> Remote Network Settings
                 10.0.0.0/24
             -> Network Address bindings
                  (All available IPv4) 25
When I test from Service Management Portal
              -> User Accounts -> Notifications -> Settings -> Test
and enter an email address it sends successfully. I have configured as follows
IP of mail server, port 25, no ssl, Basic Auth, Username
[email protected] but an actual domain account, password.
On mail server I have run Get-ReceiveConnector "Your Receive Connector" | Add-ADPermission -User "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" -ExtendedRights "Ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Any-Recipient" for the anonymous and for the account that I
have specified.
Like I said it works when I test from Service management Portal, But when I try to use it from the tenant from end to say reset a password or validate account when registering It doesn't work. I am not sure what context it uses to send the mail.

MDM Server Password Reset

Hi,
In our MDM, someone has accidently change the password for the Server. As an Admin, how can I reset the MDM Server level Password without knowing the old password.

Only way to do it is go to underlying database, if you have access or a DBO can do that (with all permisions). In database every repository is saved under database tab, there Under tables--> you have mdm user table enteries and the password can be reset.
Otherwise you can not login to repository means no other way to do this.

Not clear about dns service for new Mac 10.4 server

Due to low budget, I am given the task to convert a powermac g4 into a Mac 10.4 server. I have already installed it as a stand alone master but will promote it to directory master as soon as I configure proper dns setup.
Now my westell router shows that the dns is 192.168.1.1 and the domain name as myhomwestell.com, does that mean my zone name has to be westell.com? Can having both dns service conflict with each other or is it fine?

Hello, I'm quite new with this, is it possible to use a time machine made in os x to restore settings and files into a mac os x server?? I mean, I made one backup with time machine but i need to install the server version, will I be able to use that time machine?? thanks a lot.

Yes you can restore items from your TM backup. However, many preferences and settings for the client version of OS X may not be applicable to the server version.

New iPhone contacts accidentally synced to Exchange server, how can I get them into my Mac?

I've been adding a lot of contacts on my iPhone lately and now I wanted them synced to the Address Book on my Mac. This just wouldn't work for me, none of the new contacts would turn up on the Mac, no matter what I tried. After pulling my hair plenty it turns out I had the iPhone set up to sync contacts with the Exchange server from work instead of with my Mac.
Question is, how do I get the contacts from either the Exchange account or the iPhone into my Mac?
There doesn't seem to be a way of changing, on the iPhone, to which account an already added contact should sync. Or is there?
I must say it's pretty ******** that you cannot just choose to import all contacts from the iPhone to the Mac. Or, at the very least, have the option to choose to what account you want to sync a new contact WHEN YOU'RE ADDING IT. As you can choose between all your calendars when adding an appointment.

Help with a mac Server password to get into mac os 8.6

how would i get rid of a server password in mac os? Is it the same in all mac os's? After mac os starts, it asks for a password. Is this possible to get rid of it? Any suggestions??

Is it the same in all mac os's?
No, in fact there was no OS support for passwords in OS 8.6. In OS 9 this was only available if you enable the Multiple Users function.
In OS 8.6, they must be running a 3rd party application to provide security.

Push e-Mail Service into iPhone out of Mac OS X Server?

Will there be a push e-mail (calendar and address book) function in Mac OS X Server soon? Will there be possibilities to use Microsoft's ActiveSync-protocol under Server?
It shouldn't be that only PC-enterprise users can use the new iPhone enterprise functions, or should it?

Is there a way to have push email with macosx Server 10.5 and the iphone ? We have all our business on xserve + MacosX server, for the purpose of good interoperability between apple products. But if we can't get push emails between macosx server and iphone this is really a pity. It means we should have gone with Microsoft SMB + exchange ??? I really don't understand the apple politic !!! Apple if you read this, please make an effort toward your business client, bring good tools with good interoperability !!! The equivalent to "mobile me" should be available as an enterprise product.
