Flying Blind with an HP Pavilion Elite m9452p - no video signal at all -- HELP!!

This is a Core2 Quad Intel Q8200 Processor PC with 8GB of RAM and 750 GB HDD + 1 TB back up drive running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (it came with Vista 64 bit Home Premium, but upgraded to win 7 a while back).
It has always performed flawlessly, but last week there was no video at all when I turned it on. The monitor said "No Signal" on an otherwise black screen when powered up.
The HDD lights show activity and I can hear drives spinning, and the LEDs for the DVD and the wireless signal light up as well.  Also, the Ethernet ports LEDs blink and show activity, as does the DVD drive if I put a disc in, but no video at all.
I have done the following to try to fix this:
1. I verified that the monitor I was using is working;
2. I still connected this PC to another working DVI monitor with no luck;
3. I connected this PC to a working VGA monitor with no luck;
4. I connected the VGA monitor to the onboard VGA port with no luck;
5.I tried booting up into BIOS, but again, no video so not sure if it is going to BIOS or not;
6. I read somewhere that the onboard VGA port will not work if a video card is present so I removed the exisitng video card and connected to the onboard  VGA with no luck;
7. I purchased a replacement video card (it came with an MSI V240 500 MB PCIex16 card and got an XFX Radeon HD 5450 1GB PCI ex16 card); I  installed the new card and tried it again with no luck;
8. I don't recall if this PC was set to beep on POST before as it always started quickly and with no problems. Now that I am looking for any beeps, I don't hear any but again, don't recall if it ever did beep before;
9. Seems like this is a hardware issue, but I also tried booting to a W7 64 Bit repair disc, but again, no video so don't know if it is working.
The last thing I recall seeing on it was a Windows Update that I think included an optional update for the video driver. I don't recall if I acdcpeted that one or not, but it seems to me that the drivers for the MSI card (nVidia, GE Force drivers I believe) would be irrelevant with a Radeon card using AMD drivers - that's why I opted to get the Radeon card).
I have not tested the original card, mainly because I don't have any PC with which to test it (I have a Core 2 Duo Pc with a PCI ex slot but not a PCI ex16. I don't know if this card would be backward compatible to that PC or not).
I vaguely recall disabling the onboard VGA in BIOS, but don't recall if that was with this PC or another one.
I am hoping that someone has a way to get the video back on so i can uninstall any recent drivers or updates that may have caused this (or so I can enable onboard VGA in BIOS).
I sure hope the MoBo is not messed up (it does power up the HDDs, the DVD drive and the fans, etc.) but with no video it's hard to know what's going on.
Help!!

OK - SOLVED!!
After re-reading my post, I realized if the BIOS setting for onboard video had in fact been changed,  I could re-set these to factory default settings by resetting the CMOS.
I had not tried to clear CMOS via the MoBo jumpers, so I got the MoBo manual and I cleared the CMOs (which would reset the BIOS to factory settings). I re-started the PC and voila! I now have video!!
Sometimes the simplest things will solve the whole problem!
I felt bad that I could not resolve this problem as i usually can fix anything that is out on any of my systems, but lo and behold I answered my oiwn questin and solved the issue -- hopefully this will help others too!

  • There's video problems with my Zen Vision:M already (M video cable related) Please help

    Some background...
    System:Windows XP with Service Pack 2.
    Player: Brand new Creative Zen Vision: M with no firmware updates.
    My Zen Vision:M has a problem (besides the scratch and fingerprint attracting top surface): It won't play videos on a TV screen when the M Video Cable (also from Creative) is linked to it anymore. It's only been a few hours...
    I had the cable already, and got the player today. I let the player charge to /4th of a battery while I was setting up all the software. I ran the software programs just to take a peek, only changing the name of my player (to my name). I used Winamp 5.3 to put a music track on the player to test it. After that, I hooked it up to the VCR in my room through the white and yellow A/V plugs in front. It worked just fine. It to the tv a little large, but I was okay with it.
    Later on today, the new AC charger I ordered came in the mail (Player came through UPS, charger through USPS). I looked at my old charger (Creative Zen Touch) and realized it would work with the plug-in part of the sync unit at the bottom. I tested it for a minute and it did. I still took it out and tried the new one. This is where, I think, something happened. I had to press the sides to get the thing in, and it was hard to come out. Everything still fit just right, and nothing seemed to be wrong. I used my old charger as I added more of my music library. Now it was on to videos. I had to convert the first two test vids (they were .wmv), but they played on my player fine. I put a bigger .wmv file onto the player to see if it had to convert it, and it did. It still played on the player. When I go to hook it to the TV with the A/V cord again, there was nothing but a black screen with the occasional diagonal scan line. The sound is still there.
    Besides quirks with the navigational system, the player is still great for music and video. Still, I needed no video capability, and one of the things that made the ZVM a buy for me was watching my vids on the big screen. I'd return this for a second try, but I want to know if this is a recurring issue with you guys and if there's something I can do to fix it before a return. Did I mess with a setting? Should I get new firmware? Did I do wrong using my old charger? If any of you have an answer, or need more info on my situation, please let me know.
    And BTW, does anyone know of some better software for organizing files on the ZVM? I used Winamp for my Zen Touch and the music on my ZVM, but videos are another ballpark. I can't transfer a video from one folder to another folder (assuming both folders are on the ZVM). Not to mention the music I transferred using Winamp isn't even showing up in Windows Media Player. I think I need a different program altogether.

    I have got a new Creative Zen Vision W and getting the same problem....when i attach to the tv then i am able to hear the audio content and the video does not show.Are we missing something ? or is it a problem with the player. Also the software provided with the Zen converts small .vob files to .wmv when ever the size is large it gives an error 'conversion?unsucessful'.Any body facing similar problems please help.

  • Does the HP Pavilion Elite m9340f come with integrated bluetooth?

    Thx in advance for any help provided. I could swear that I had built in bluetooth capabilities on My HP Pavilion Elite m9340f when first purchased, at the time having Windows Vista as the operating system. I believed it to be built into the wireless card. I've since upgraded to Windows 7 and had numerous problems with a variety of things, and can't even begin to recall all I've done with this machine, though replacing hardware was not a part of that. I recently decided to hook up my Motorola S10-HD headphones so that I could have audio without being tethered to the machine, but have had no luck in connecting. I've since checked to see if I even have a bluetooth adapter listed under my network adapters, but none is shown. To make a short story long, was I mistaken in believing that the HP Pavilion Elite m9340f ever shipped with an integrated bluetooth adapter, or is it possible that somehow, it has been disabled or disassociated in such a what that it doesn't even show up any longer? I am sure a $10 - $20 doggle could fix what I'm wanting, but it's more a matter or curiousity than necessity. I have tried connecting my PS3 bluetooth headphones with doggle to my computer to see if that would work, but though it shows them listed as an added device, they doen't transmit any sound.

    Ya, I checked the specs also, but sometimes the build can change a little depending on the time of build? Like I said, more a matter of curiousity than necessity, just wondering if I was thinking of another computer, or if I was missing something and wanted to try for a definative answer. Who knows, maybe senility is catching up on me?

  • Pavilion Elite e9180f freezes, crashes, BSOD

    I am one of the many unhappy customers who bought this piece of junk (Pavilion Elite e9180f) and waited too long to return it because in my naivete, I thought it was some kind of simple software issue.  Nope!  It's definitely something wrong with the hardware, because the freezes and crashes have been happening since day 1, right when I took the thing out of the box.
    Yeah, the system is fast and runs Windows Vista great, when it's actually WORKING, which is usually only guaranteed for about the first 5 minutes after you power the system on and boot windows.  After that, it's just buying time before it crashes again.  Forget trying to get anything done on this computer.  Forget about asking this PC to play a video or music file without the files "stuttering" during playback.  Even my 7 year old Sony Vaio which is running XP can handle playing an MP3 file without stuttering and crashing!
    Like everyone else, the freezes and crashes happen either one of two ways:
    1) The machine begins to "stutter", stutter more, then freeze/crash.  When I say stutter, I mean I move the mouse, the pointer graphic will hesitate on the screen and lag behind.  If you start to play a video or music file, this manifests in an audible "stutter".  The stuttering gets worse and worse as minutes pass until eventually it freezes for good, blasting that 1/50th second moment of audio into infinity.  You have to reboot immediately if you don't want to go deaf or be driven mad.
    2)  I will be doing nothing at the time (example, I close all programs out and leave Windows sitting on the main desktop screen), I'll walk out of the room for a minute, then come back and find I can't move the mouse. This system will often lock-up without any warning!
    Sometimes I'll get a BSOD or error screen, sometimes I won't (in which case your only option is to do a cold re-boot.)  When I do get the BSOD, the error is ALWAYS the "did not get a response from the secondary processor" yada yada.  I wish HP would just admit they shipped this model out with a bad processor/motherboard/whatever and do an official recall.  I have owned PCs for the last 13 years and this is the worst and most consistently disappointing experience I have ever had.
    What is the hardware issue?  Which part is the lemon part?  The motherboard?  The processor?  The BSODs seem to indicate a bad processor.  I do have the Pegatron Truckee version 1.03 motherboard.  Is that the problem?
    P.S.  I have contacted HP on many occasions about this, literally stayed on the phone for hours with "customer support" (according to one HP rep, 80% of their customer service reps are based outside of the United States...good luck getting any "technical" help from them) to no avail.  I did talk to one nice tech support guy in Canada who said "it sounds like your unit has a bad processor", so he had HP send me a box to ship my unit to their repair center so they can replace the processor.  However, I have also had HP reps tell me it could be anything from the memory to the hard drive.  Multiple HP reps claimed to me that they have "received no complaints" about this system.  One guy told me he "thought he got an email last week" regarding "something" about the system, but couldn't remember what it was and he put me on hold while he searched for the email.  He never found it.  What a joke.
    EDIT:  Just to clarify, the crashing issue has been happening since day one, but initially I thought it was an issue with Vista.  I had never owned or used Vista before, so I thought maybe Vista was just unstable.  Nope.  I know several people who own Vista and have never experienced these issues.  I have downloaded every update from Microsoft/Windows Update.  I have upgraded to Vista SP2 with all the latest drivers and software for all of my hardware.  No luck.  It is definitely a hardware issue.  Thank god HP's warranty is good for 1 year (I bought my Elite in July).

    Unfortunately I have to add my disastrous encounter with HP's E9180F a true lemon HP is selling. I must take some responsibility for not carefully researching this model before I purchased, but I trusted the HP name and got stung- big time.
    The scoundrel  :
    HP and its Pavilion Elite e9180f
    Windows 7 64bit
    motherboard - Pegatron  Truckee ver 1.03
    BIOS ver  5.22Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
    Memory 9206 MB Ram
    As so many others have reported my HP E9180f started locking up and going to BSOD right out of the box. My first freeze-up came when I was doing the Windows update process. At first I didn't think much about it but I started getting random freezes a couple time a day. At that point I went online to see if others had experienced the same problem and perhaps had a fix. What I found was very troubling;  I found extensive documentation describing my exact problems and what was really horrifying was the reports of how ridiculous HP's help services were treating people with the problem. At first I didn't totally believe what I was reading on HP's own customer forum; I do now.
    ·         I've went through the total recovery process three times now, HP techs have spent hours remotely running my computer, (yes it did lock up on them to)
    ·         I had to upgraded the BIOS. (HP tech tried, said he had, but he hadn't)
    ·         I was directed to clear the BIOS (luckily for me I had the tools
    ·         Updated all drivers again and again.
    ·         Next I was asked to remove the video card, memory, and motherboard power cable and reseat them. I declined because I didn't want to give HP any reason to void my HP 2 year House Call Care Pack which covers this unit. When I invited HP to send a service tech out to perform these tasks, they said that house call only covers part replacement, we weren't replacing a part. I couldn't believe what I was told. Are you feeling my frustration?
    Keep in mind that each time HP requests that I make changes, they then ask me to test the system, which I did and each time with the same result, BSOD
    I'm heading into my fifth week of working with HP to fix this problem. and I still haven't even been able to get my case moved up to a senior case manager, what a joke HP's help process is.
     One conversation I loved was;
    HP tech: "I'll have a senior case manager call you within 24 hours."
    Skeptical me: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    Silence, no response.
    Me again: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    HP tech: "That's an impossibility."
    Guess what? The impossibility became reality (I bet you guessed) .
    HP's last stall tactic was to have me fax them my proof of purchase and invoice and call back in 24 hours. Where have I heard that before? Apparently nothing can go forward until they receive it. So I faxed them the stuff within 10 minutes, and when I called back 24 hours later, guess what, you're right it wasn't on their system yet. I asked couldn't I be escalated to a senior case manager  (it's apparent that only a senior case manager can do anything). "No," was the tech's reply, "call back again later".
    Please if anyone out there knows the secrete to getting a senior case manager, or an HP tech support number here in the U.S. so I can get this thing fixed I'd love to know it.
    Fast becoming HP never again.

    I have a  HP Pavilion Elite e9220y Desktop PC I have gotten an error on my hard drive BIOHD-8 imminate failure, I am going to replace my drive and would like to know if I can replace it with a 2 TB?

    Hi,
    Should be ok to use 2TB HDD and lower. Anything bigger/larger (capacity) than 2.2TB you may get problem and have to do more work to be able to get it right.

  • HP Pavilion Elite e91804 experiencing lock-ups and crashing after LWSEP

    1. Product name and number: HP Pavilion Elite e91804
    2. Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit
    3. No error message (other than blue screen)
    4. My most recent change was sending my computer in for the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement Program, and receiving a new motherboard.
    Before I sent my computer in for the LWSEP I was experiencing lock-ups and crashes only when I was multi-tasking (playing video games, listening to music, and having tabs open in firefox).
    So I sent my computer in for the LWSEP to receive a new motherboard to fix these crashes, however after receiving my computer from them, the lock-ups and crashing have not been fixed and, in fact, have gotten worse. My computer will now lock-up and crash whenever I attempt to stream anything, be that music, video, etc. I can still occasionally play video games, assuming that I am doing nothing else, and that my computer cooperates with me (not locking up), but this only happens about 1/3 of the time.
    My main confusion is that sending my computer in was supposed to fix my problem, not make it worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • HP Pavilion Elite HPE-480t computer and an HP bd 340i 12x blu-ray writer

    I purchased HP 12x Blu-Ray writer model bd340i in the middle of last year. When I purchased my desk top from HP in December of 2010 model HP Pavilion Elite HPE-480t I installed the burner and every thing was working fine. Today I tried to burn a blu-ray disc and it came back with can not read media, that was on imgBurn. So I tried the same on the systems burner and it came back as no disc in tray. I also tried CyberLink burning software and the same thing no disc.
    I then tried to play both store bought and home made blu-ray disc and it could not read the media. I was ready to blame it on a bad burner but I then tried a regular DVD both store bought and home made and it played fine. I then tried to burn a dvd single and dual-layer with all three burning softwares I have and again it was fine, no problems. Its just the blu-ray media that can not be read or writen. The only blu-ray media I used from day one has been Kodak and never had a problem. Thats what baffles me.
    I at this point dont know if its a hardware or software problem with the computer or blu-ray burner or both. 3 different burning programs works fine on DVD's but not blu-ray, Plays DVD's fine but can not play or burn blu-ray discs.
    Could it be the blu-ray laser crapped out and the dvd reading and writing laser is still working ?  Does a blu ray burner even have to lasers for the two medias [DVD and Blu Ray]???
    Everything else with the computer works fine. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling and its the same, I tried to update the drivers and firmware on your site and still did not work. Please some help.

    Joey, welcome to the forum.
    Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome?  Sometimes a glitch will occur during the original install.  This can cause the problem that you are experiencing.
    Also, you may want to try Internet Explorer or Firefox to see if you receive the same error message.  This will tell you if it is a problem with Chrome or a system problem.

  • Unable to use Recovery Manager on HP Pavilion Elite HPE-112y PC Windows 7

    HP Pavilion Elite HPE-112y PC.
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium - 64-bit.
    I'm having problems with my Recovery Manager. A few days ago it was working fine. The other day when I tried to access either the "Software Program Reinstallation" or the "Hardware Driver Reinstallation" to check something out, both my DVD and BD drives opened and a message popped up saying:
    This system does not have a recovery partition. The recovery process needs to use the set of recovery discs you created previously. Please insert disc #1 now.
    I did not create any such recovery discs. I don't know how this happened. When I looked at the "I'd like to take precautions" section of the Recovery Manager, the "Recovery Disc Creation" and the "Remove Recovery Partition" are grayed out, but the "View Recovery Report" is still active and there is some kind of report in it. I don't know what the report means.
    I did ask for advice somewhere else and was asked to post a screenshot of my Disk Management from the Computer Management. After seeing the screenshot, I was told that my recovery partition is there and in good health and there is a possibility that something is preventing the recovery process from seeing it.
    I'm asking around for advice before I try anything. I want to be very cautious before I do anything drastic.
    Is there a chance that I can find my Recovery Partition and restore it? Or will I have to do a full System Recovery to get it restored?
    ===============
    I'm not trying to make any changes yet, but I thought I would take a look at the System Recovery in the Recovery Manager. When I click the System Recovery button this is what I see.
    Restore your computer to its original factory condition.
    Your computer does not have a Recovery partition.
    If you want to continue the restoration process, make sure you have inserted disc #1 and then click "Yes" to continue, or click "No" to exit.
    Is this going to be a problem if I need to restore my system?

    Hi,
    Even though the Recovery Manager software is unable to launch a system recovery, the f11 option may still work as it uses an entry in the BCD ( boot configuration data ) to launch via the f11 method at start-up.  Saying that, I would definitely recommend getting a set of Recovery discs in case it does launch correctly, just to be on the safe side.

  • HP Pavilion Elite m9258 will not boot up. Won't recognise USB ports -mouse keys etc

    HP Pavilion Elite M9258
    70 percent of the time will not boot up.
    Computet light is on. DVD drive will open and shut. Fans sound slightly quieter when this happens.
    The monitor comes on but the light goes to  orange. When I press any of the monitor buttons, it flashes a message for a few seconds telling me it is in sleep mode and invites me to move the mouse or press a key to continue
    The problem is that the USB ports are not recognised by the computer at this point. The infra red mouse light flashes briefly when the computer is switched on then goes and remains off. The keyboard is also unresponsive.
    The sole fix that  I can find is to repeatedly turn the computer off and on again. After 70 -100 attempts ( over 4 to 6 hours) it suddenly boots up normally. The problem began a year ago and is increasing in duration and severity.

The computer freezes then the keyboard and mouse will not respond and the only thing I can do is shut it down and even then I have to hold the pwer button about 10 sec before it shuts off! I have unplugged all external devices like you told avro500 to do and I did finally get it started but the computer still freezes and it is doing it more often as time goes by! I even paid HP support the $100 dollars (or around that amount) to fix it but it keep happening even after they worked on it but it was after the 7 days or what ever their policy is! They downloaded some security suites and ran their scans! They left Advanced system care, ccleaner and superantispyware on my computer and I was just wondering if they could be conflicting with my paid norton internet security? I have become very flustrated because first off I paid a lot of money for this computer and it's not even 2 years old yet and I also have paid HP a lot of money to fix it and all the guy from India could say to me was "I have been working on this computer and it hasn't froze up so the problem must be fixed!" Well it's not!! and I don't know enough to fix it myself so thats why I paid you a hundred dollars to do it for me! haha thanks for any help!

  • How can I add USB 3.0 to my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-190t CTO Desktop PC?

    How can I add USB 3.0 to my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-190t CTO Desktop PC?  It uses Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS.
    I can't tell how many or if there are expansion slots inside the case.  Is there a reliable source for such an expansion card?

    Considering the different options that PC could have been ordered with, it might be there is not an empty slot to mount a PCI add-on card to add a USB 3.0 card.  It would be advisable to open the case to see if there is an empty slot.  If there is, then THIS is a choice to add USB 3.0

  • HP Pavilion Elite e9280t Desktop - Memory Card Reader Stopped Working

    Hello,
             I have a HP Pavilion Elite e9280t CTO Desktop PC ...  The memory card reader recently stopped working.  I believe, maybe the firmware, and/or driver was deleted by one of my optimization softwares. I checked the "Device Manager" list and was unable to locate "any" memory card device.  All the USB plugs work fine. When I place an SD card in the memory card reader slot, the light comes on, but the computer does not recognize the card. The card does not show up in my "Computer"  window with the other drives.  I checked the card out on my other computer, and it worked fine.   I also have an HP laptop that I tested my SD cards on, and the cards worked fine on my laptop.
            I would appreciate any help, or suggestions, that any one might give.

  • My HP Pavilion Elite m9058n PC's Card-Readers Stop Reading/Recognizing My SDHC Cards

    Just about 2 weeks ago my HP Pavilion Elite m9058n PC's card readers stop reading or recognizing my memory cards used to store the pictures I took. They used to be able to read my SDHC cards (Sandisk, Kinston, Panasonic) before. Don't understand why they stop reading, even recognizing all of them. My O/S is Windows 8. The initial symptom was the options for processing the inserted cards seemed to be showing up slower than before and then I had to withdraw the cards and re-insert them so that such option screen appear. Then later on it didn't show up at all. And when I checked "This PC" ("computer" or "my computer" in other Windows versions), I didn't see the DRIVE LETTERS, like G, K, or J, etc. for the memory card readers any more. Now if I connect my camera directly with my PC, I see on the camera model number on "This PC" screen.
    Please help me understand what this problem is and kindly provide me with the best solutions you can.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi,
    I understand your card reader is not working as you have previously experienced. Take a look at the following document, Using and Troubleshooting Memory Card Readers (Windows 8), specifically the "Resolving issues with memory cards" section. Hopefully there will be something in there that is useful for you. Best of luck. Have a wonderful day.

  • My HP Pavilion Elite m9060n Media-Centre PC has refused to start up requiring a long time-consuming

    My desktop HP Pavilion Elite m9060n has given me great difficulty on start-up twice now; requiring a number of efforts to finally get it to work...this has never happened to me before. I was notified by "windows" that this may have been the result of plugging in a new device i.e. a camera; however, I have not introduced any new hardware. I DID download software "Roxio NXT and Corel Paintshop" shortly before these incidents. I would simply go back and Restore from the time before these items were introduced, but if I do I lose both programs!!...as I didn't pay extra for download protection. What are any other probable causes that I may investigate? Thanks, from a semi-literate compu-user.

    Hello Morrismornic,
    Try putting your computer in a clean boot state to see if the problem still appears with nothing loading.
    You can find instructions for a clean boot state in the link below
    http://goo.gl/w3KQH
    If the software is causing the problems you are experiencing you may want to see if there is a repair option or check with Roxio to see if you would be able to redownload the software if you "lost" it.

  • Speaker squeel in my HP Pavilion Elite e9180t

    I purchased my  HP Pavilion Elite e9180t in Oct. with Vista Loaded on it. Plan was to upgrade to 7 for ease of home networking.
    It worked great out of the box. Sound was wonderful. This machine was very fast. My Printer, Scanner- everything worked better than expected. and secure.
    Received my free upgrade for Windows 7 two months later, Installed it and have had nothing but problems since.
    I called HP support about my speakers squealing . They took control of my PC and removed the driver for the Creative Sound Blaster X- Fi Xtreme Audio  Card and then reloaded  it. I noticed as they were loading it again that the driver was for Windows Vista. I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem or not. it seemed to work until the following day. Problem returned as bad as before.
    I have tried different speakers including a good set of Bose that are hooked up to the laptop in the basement. They still squealed.
    The speakers do not squeal all the time. One time you boot up they sound beautiful, the next time, the sound will be tinny and they will squeal periodically, not continuously, but often.

    JB, I have had an experience similar to yours.  My problem was caused by the 'Microphone Boost' in the Master Volume control under 'Advanced' microphone settings.  It boosts the volume of the mic by several decibels.  I am using XP Pro so I can't tell you exactly how to find it in Win7.  It made an ear piercing screech when it was enabled.  I never did figure out what caused it.  I simply quit using the Boost feature.
