FM 10 "Unusable Fonts"

Hello again everyone.
I have a book with multiple documents and the ToC needs updating. However, when I tried to update the ToC, it says that one of my documents uses "unusable fonts". Here's the thing, it's using Times New Roman. I have tried changing to another common font (Arial), changing back to Times New Roman, .mif washing, and creating a new book and importing the same documents. Nothing's worked. Any suggestions?  Thanks.
-NewbieTechWriter

Unavailable fonts can reside anywhere in the document, including reference and master pages. I have discovered cases in which a font instance is simply turning the font on and then off again with no content in between. This happened when our company switched from using font A to using font B. Even though the content on the body pages was all font B, FrameMaker still said font A was being used. I had to export the document as mif, then open the mif file in a text editor to find about two instances of a font A toggle on-off. Those were the days before font pods.
There is a possible explanation of how your font got changed to the PostScript version. You say you are the sole author, so this may not apply. But suppose the document was sent to a third party who did not have the non-PS version of the font. The third party opened the file and got a message that the non-PS font was not available. So, the third party turned OFF rememeber missing fonts, reopened the file, and FrameMaker replaced the non-PS version with the PS version. Then the third party saved the file. You get the file back, open it, no PS font available. To get it back to your non-PS version would be to turn OFF remember missing fonts in the preferences, open the file (the non-PS version replaces the PS version), then save the file. Then turn ON remember missing fonts. Turning ON remember missing fonts, allows you to edit a file that uses a font you do not have; when it is opened on a machine WITH the font, the document is happy. BUT you say you are the only author. So, this explanation may be a long shot.
By the way, PostScript is a language for describing pages. It is used primarily by digital printing houses and PostScript printers. PostScript fonts are fonts described in the PostScript language and are typically better quality than non-PostScript fonts.

  • Safely getting rid of unused fonts

I just replaced my hard drive and with that came the latest OSX version and I noticed in fontbook that out of the 182 fonts installed in the standard OSX install 109 are not english fonts -- I'm never going to use these non- english fonts but having them installed means endless scrolling to find the few fonts I will use.
How can I safely get rid of these unusable fonts?

  • Unused Fonts are bloating the size of the document.

    Good afternoon,
I am trying to drastically shrink the size of my file. It jumped from 200KB to 3MG. I tried to standardize all the font sizes.
I went through each field to ensure it was the same font so I wouldn’t have 2 font sizes in the document bloating the size. Looking in the properties screen; however, I still see 4 unused fonts. I tried save>optimize: i still could not remove the unused fonts?
How do I remove unused fonts? I have attached a screen shot.

    Hi George,
after we create a new pdf document, inserted a text field and saved it, we reopened the pdf, we changed the default font (Helvetica) to another one - for example Times New Roman (right click on the field and selecting Properties --> Appearance --> Text --> Font: [font type combo] ) -
and we re-saved the file, this new font has embedded to document, as you say, and the filesize increased.
After all the above operations, we re-changed the font of the text field (or also all the text fields) with previous default font (Helvetica)
and then we saved the document with optimize PDF function, the filesize didn't change but it remained the same, did not decrease to initial size!
Could you tell us a procedure to reset the font of fields and return to initial file size without rewriting the document and all the fields?
P.S.: We have used Adobe Acrobat XI Pro
Than you in advance for your answer,
    Best regards

  • How can I find and remove an unused font embedded in PDF exported from a book?

The font (Myriad Pro) was the original [Basic Paragraph] font in the indd files, but I need to replace it with a different (approved) font.
MP is no longer found by Find Font in any of the indd files in the book.
It is not used (that I can find) in the AI files or the PSD files placed in the indd files.
Where could MP be hiding? It always shows as the default when I open the AI files, so is it somehow stored in the AI files even if unused and embedded in the PDF as a result of that?

After opening dozens and dozens of linked files,I finally found the offending "empty line of text" in one of the AI files I placed in the INDD file. Open > Select All.... then check the font panel. With mixed fonts, it was empty, but if everything was the correct font, it was filled in. It was just one AI file.
I want to thank you all for your great ideas and for sharing your experience. Onward, now.

  • How to remove unused fonts that are NOT embedded?

I use only two fonts in the PDF I'm currently working on. However, when I export the docx (Word 2010) with the Acrobat plugin, more fonts appear. I already know how to delete additional unused embedded fonts, but there are also some non-embedded fonts like Arial or Calibri that ALWAYS appear.
I presume they are part of styles e.g. whenever I ad a header with Word, Arial appears and will NEVER go away again, not even if I delete all headers. Find/Replace doesn't work, Word never finds the fonts.
So, is there any way to eliminate the fonts after I created the PDF (I'm using Acrobat 10)? I don't want the fonts list to be bloated with fonts I don't actually use.

I think, you should avoid the fonts to appear in the exported PDF in the first place, not manually remove them.
In the export/conversion settings you can usually select between, like, "embed only used fonts" or "embed no fonts at all".
Also, non-embedded fonts are not embedded - so why care about them? The PDF just contains information on the used fonts from the application you used to make the PDF (Word), for font substitution.
" fonts list to be bloated with fonts I don't actually use." What does that mean? What font list? Do you think that the embedded font of a PDF will be installed on the system somebody watches the PDF on? If so, then no, it won't.

  • Frame 10 Book won't Generate: Unused Font That Won't Go Away

We have some very old files that have been upgraded to Frame 10 with new templates. Templates imported just fine, but when you go to generate the book, it pops up the console window telling you about "HelveticaNeueLTStd-TD Font not available" and the states that the book was not updated because of errors during the update process. A particular file shows up on the error list.
So, I open the file, the Console tells me it is substituting Times New Roman. I try re-importing the template, clean out overrides. Save. Try again, same issues. I have also tried pasting it into a clean template. Same problem. I've even looked at fonts on all my paragraph tags.
Is there anything I should try before giving up on it, and just pasting text-only into a new template, and reformating from scratch?

    Jane,
Before you start cleaning your files: Just open all files of the book (open book, hold the shift key, select File > Open All Files in Book, accept all warning messages). From then on book update and everything should work.
FrameMaker just resists working with files opened in the background that might have some issues.

PS: Have you tried the new font replacement feature of FrameMaker using the Fonts pod?

  • Unused fonts in generated report

    Hi,
My file turned out too large, so I generated a report and
found two fonts that I'm no longer using in the file. How can I
take these out of the file?
    Thanks.
    Dan

Sorry, I found the fonts under an object. My file is still
too big. I'm doing lip-sync and I reuse mouth symbols a lot. I
    think that's the problem.

  • How to get rid of an unused font?

    Hi folks,
developing a spreadsheet I used an font named franklin gothic book for a headline - but in the end used helvetica instead. Now when I export that spreadsheet via icloud to iPAD numbers, it will always tell me me spreadsheet might look different because that font is missing on the iPAD. I have reformatted each and every cell to make shure franklin gothic book is not used at all - but I still have the iPAD complain. How can I get rid of franklin gothic book?
    Andrea, Berlin, Germany

There may be a text box or other graphical object that uses this font.  Move the relevant tables to a new document and test on the iPad after each move to confirm the unwanted font does not move to the new document.

  • ***Cant Scroll through fonts using arrow keys

when trying to preview different fonts in AI i am unable to scroll through them using the arrow keys, it just doesnt move... can anyone tell me whats wrong? im sure its pretty simple but i have no idea how to fix it...if it can be fixed... oh im using cs3 and a mac on os x leopard

you cant scroll through fonts in photoshop too. the scrolling stops on an item of the list (maybe photoshop has problem with it), and 1. in photoshop, you can't jump over it, you have to manually place the selection on the item after the one that blocked the scrolling, 2. illustrator will jump backward and you will keep scrolling about max 5-6 fonts over and over.
the font groups divided with lines are meaningless. it doesn't have any relation with regional keysets or any good reason.
a lot of unusable font f....d into the middle of the page.
i have to scroll over a dozens of unusable system fonts, what I cannot uninstall from Windows.
    no font management at all.
and yes waiting for another 300$ upgrade too.
(plus another upgrade for a flash, because flash drawing tools didn't see upgrades in their whole lifetimes.
these tools are covered with bugs from top to toe. because nobody takes care of them. 300$ / 1bug.)

  • Removing/substituting a "missing font" from a document

    Hey all!
I removed some unused fonts from my system, and now some of my Pages documents raise up the "missing font" error on opening, although all styles used in the document use the fonts that are in the system. Perhaps some of the blank paragraphs may have "traces" of those old fonts.
So is there a way to do a "substitute font" procedure? Or do I have to manually select all paragraphs and make sure the style they use is based on an existing font?
    Thanks,
    Artemiy.

    Artemiy,

When I change the Keyboard to Sinhaha inside the Flex3 Sinhala Characters are not dispalying.

Thanks Tom. Yeah, I understand that PDFs are not designed to work like word-processing files, etc., and the need to have the Chinese text copy over well is really just to prove that the document is searchable (i.e. if it can copy a short section of text Ok, then it means the characters are recognized by the PDF reader and I can search the document, which is my main goal.)
The problem I mentioned with Preview, etc., is actually a new one; one that has become a big problem for me only in the last few weeks. Before, I never had this issue. I'm not sure what changed, but I was suspecting MacKeeper and their "language cluster" cleaning feature, where it "helps" you by removing unused fonts. Though, I can't quite confirm that this has played a role. I just completely reinstalled the OS thinking that this would fix the issue by installing all the original fonts again, if MacKeeper did indeed remove the fonts these PDF programs use when editing or saving PDF files. However.....unfortunately....the problem is still here.
So, that developer I mentioned in the first thread who said this is an OS X issue may indeed be correct.
And just to be clear, I have confirmed that the PDF's I working with do have the fonts embedded already. It is only when I alter them and then save or export from Preview, Skim, Nomad, etc., that the character information gets stripped out and I'm left with a document that one can read but cannot search. I can't even OCR it because this problem also affects my OCR software, as if it can't get access to the fonts needed to embed in the recognized PDF.
Any other thoughts? I'd appreciate any you have.

  • Font Folders (i.e. Comprehensive CS-wide Font organization!)

Having zero built-in font organization in CS is akin to using Premiere Pro without bins or Photoshop without layers.  In other words, it's a mess!  I've seen other posts suggesting ways to organize fonts, yet none that I felt present a complete solution.  With that said, here is my suggested solution to the current lack of font organization in CS:
    Font Folders
    Features:
Ability to create collapsible (i.e. 'twirlable') Font Folders at the top of each CS program's Font List.
Ability to add (drag-drop)/remove/reorder/rename fonts within these folders, and add the same fonts to several folders.
Four permanent 'Master' Font Folders at the top of each CS program's font list:
'Program Name Fonts' (e.g. 'Photoshop Fonts')
    'CS Fonts'
'Program Name Projects' (e.g. 'Premiere Pro Projects')
    'Font List'
'Program Name Fonts' would be Font Folders that only appear in the respective program in which they were created.  Thus, a 'Wedding Videos' Font Folder created in Premiere Pro would only appear in that program.
'CS Fonts' would be Font Folders that automatically appear in every other CS program.  Thus, a 'Favorites' Font Folder created in Photoshop would automatically appear in Illustrator, AE, PP and other relevant CS programs.  Any eventual changes made to this folder, in any CS program, would automatically appear in every other CS program.
'Program Name Projects' would be automatically created Font Folders to keep track of the fonts used in previous projects.  Thus, should a video editor want to reuse the same 10 fonts that were used in a project from a year ago, referencing those fonts would be as simple as opening the respective Font Folder.  For greater organization, Project folders should automatically be categorized into root folders by year, and allow the same renaming/deleting/reordering as the other two types of Font Folders.
'Font List': putting all installed fonts into their own collapsible folder would allow users to twirl this folder closed when they only want to focus on fonts within other Font Folder categories.
Right-clicking on any Master Font Folder or Font (Sub-)Folder could give users contextual menu options to export/import the Font Folder structure and/or the fonts within them. This would make sharing fonts and/or Font Folders between users and between computer systems quick and easy.
These contextual menus should also give users the option to 'Sort Alphabetically'.
Right-clicking on the 'Font List' folder could give users different display options:
    Display all installed fonts
Display uncategorized fonts (only shows fonts that have not been manually added to a Font Folder by user)
Diplay unused fonts (only shows fonts that have not been used, i.e. do not appear in the 'Program Name Projects' Font Folders.
By default, Adobe could populate the 'CS Fonts' folder with standard categories, such as 'Serif', 'Sans Serif', 'Fixed width', etc, to organize its default CS fonts.
Every font folder should contain a preview of each font, just like fonts in Photoshop's Font List do.  For maximum usefulness, the default characters 'Sample' should automatically be replaced by the first 1-30 user-selected characters within the program's interface.  Thus, should a Premiere Pro user want to compare how the title 'Jenny+Edward' looks in all 20 fonts in his/her 'Wedding Videos' Font Folder, doing so would be as simple and instantaneous as selecting the text in the Titler, and twirling open the 'Wedding Videos' Font Folder!
A horizontal resize bar at the top of each CS program's Font List (just like the bar at the bottom of Premiere Pro's Project Window) would allow users to resize font names and font previews within all 4 Font Folders.  This would ensure a perfect viewing size for all users, on all resolution monitors.
Why should editors have to scroll through a list of 100, 300, or 500+ installed fonts that are completely inappropriate for a certain title, every time they want to locate and compare the 5-10 fonts that are well suited? Allowing this kind of intuitive, built-in font organization, with a simple drag & drop interface, would be a God-send and set Adobe apart as the first software company to address font management in this way!
Comments?  Ideas?  Missing features?  Please share!
ps. My 'Project Name Fonts' idea may be harder to program by virtue of requiring automation.  This feature could therefore be released in a subsequent version, should its omission allow for the sooner release of the other features I suggest.  Thank you.

    Hi Ann,
I just tested out the DiskFonts extension you found.  Thanks for the tip.
Here's what I tested and found so far (Windows only):
DiskFonts (www.anastasiy.com/diskfonts): only 3rd-party program we've found that currently supports Premiere, but not CS6.  In CS6 it crashes, but from what I can gauge, it's of limited use.  Too many basic things missing, such as ability to create various font sets/folders, and resize bar for previews.  I like how it's a dockable window though.
Font Agent Pro 4.1 (www.insidersoftware.com): Terrible interface, heavy program, wants to copy fonts from default Windows folder to custom location?? Bad, bad, bad.
MainType 5.1 (www.high-logic.com/font-manager): Great interface, very customizable, ability to create font folders (Root Groups & Subgroups) with custom icons.  Second best option I've found after TypeDNA.
TypeDNA 2.2.1 (www.typedna.com): Best 3rd party app I've found so far!  Straightforward  with customizable information columns and most font viewing options (list view, card view, family view).  Intelligent tools such as 'Similar' (right-click on any font and click 'Similar' to automatically get a list of all similar looking fonts), and font search by attributes (weight, width, italic and optical). Fantastic features!  Missing features: Premiere Pro integration, resize bar for previews (resizing currently requires a visit to the Preferences), colour pickers for font/background colors, subgroup font folders (currently only allows root level groups), CTRL-A font selection (keyboard shortcut doesn't work), 'Smart Sets' (available in Suitcase Fusion 4 and Font Explorer X Pro).
Suitcase Fusion 4 (www.extensis.com/suitcase-fusion-4): Great interface for font previews (selectable font/background colors, resize bar, etc.), but drag/dropping fonts to font folders (sets) always gives me an 'unexpected error' message.  Even if it did work, the interface for managing custom sets is terrible: custom sets cannot be added to the 'System Fonts' root folder (where all fonts are listed), they can only be added to custom 'Library' root folders.  However these root folders cannot be simultaneously 'twirled down', which makes drag-dropping fonts from one's library directly to a custom set impossible.  This UI is insane.
Font Explorer X Pro 2.3.3 (www.fontexplorerx.com): Sloooow startup.  Can create custom Sets and Smart Sets, nested within master Folders, and even export Sets! (all contained fonts sent to zipped file) However, the complete lack of font list preview options (tiny preview characters can't even be resized!) makes this otherwise nice program unusable for font management (preview options only available in window that displays 1 font at a time).
If TypeDNA can add the missing features I mention above, and add extensions for Premiere Pro and After Effects, then it would, IMO, remove the need for Adobe to add font folders as suggested.  However, ideally, Adobe can take cues from these programs (MainType interface + TypeDNA's smart tools + Font Explorer X Pro Set exports) and give us its own built-in solution.
Any programs missing in this list that I should test?

  • How to uninstall Snow Leopard? major font problems in iWork, iLife

All iWork and iLife apps have shocking font problems... so much so that I need to uninstall Snow Leopard and wait for Apple to sort it out. Does anyone know the best way? And how is it possible that these problems are occurring with Apple's inhouse software? Other stuff seems to be working OK so far for the most part. For a bit more detail on my problems, including sample images:
    http://bit.ly/309G0o

Snow lizard cost me $27.000.00 in unusable fonts. We installed snow lizards (what I'm calling it now) and lost 934 fonts. Say 40 were bad fonts and 896 were type 1 postscript. When I explained to the tech person how big this was to the print community, he had no clue. - I'm still waiting to hear back. I have a case number but now I read from another post they knew Snow Lizard would do this. At 30.00 per font that is almost $27,000 to replace what they thought wasn't important. But in the print world of design this is huge. Every layout and ad that needs an update - which take a few minutes is a whole rework. They have no clue what business a mac computer is in or they don't see us as important.
I did find if I load those fonts or the font missing into the InDesign font folder I can get the old ad to make it to pdf. But photoshop and illustrator, I'm screwed. And if I didn't outline the type in illustrator - it's gone. I asked the tech guy if I can go back, and undo this slimy lizard and he said probably not if we do backups. We do backups every hour - this is the print business. I feel forsaken. I've been with apple for so many years.

  • FrameMaker 7.2 - missing fonts

I recently switched from a computer with Windows XP to a new computer with Windows 7. I didn't install the exact fonts that I had on the old computer, but will install them as I need them (I saved them on disc).
In certain tables I have bullets created by \b\t in Numbering format. When I open a document containing a table with those, I get an error-message about missing fonts. This is only when I have linked the table from another document. The table in the document I have linked it IN to looks OK (but I get the error-message). But when I double click on the table and choose Open source, the bullets in the table are now replaced with black "standing rectangles". I also get the error-message about missing fonts when I open the document where the original table is. But it prints right!!
If you couldn't understand my rambling above, here's how it is exactly:
    A) Documents with tables with \b\t, no links to or from: no error message and bullets looks like bullets.
    B) Documents with tables with \b\t, table in linked from another document: error-message and bullets looks like bullets.
    C)  Documents with tables with \b\t, original table to B) above: error-message and bullets looks like rectangles.
    D) Documents with text that uses \b\t: no error-message and bullets looks like bullets.
    E) Documets with text that uses \b\t and the text is linked in from another document: no error-message and the bullet looks like bullets.
    F) The original text to E) above: no error-message and bullets looks like rectangles.
    All these variations prints right...
    I am now wondering this:
    1) Wich font is FM using when it creates these bullets?
    2) Why does it look right (even though I get the error-message) in the document where the table or text is linked into?
As it doesn't help if I click OK when FM asks me if I want to reformat the document (I get the exact same message the next time I open the file) I am wondering how to fix this. Very irritating!!
    Lena

I do have the English FrameMaker, even though I am Swedish. So much easier when asking for help...
For some strange reason I now got a console for the first time (about missing fonts...). Never had it before. It says that Courier is missing and will be replaced by Courier New.
I read the help file and found out how to remove unused fonts (removing all and then taking back the used ones). Still Courier is missing and it will be replaced by Courier New... Is there a way I could search for where FM thinks Courier should be used? I have gong through all the formats used, and all formats uses Futura or Futura Light.
Now something strange happened. The document I worked with above was one where I had a file linked into. So I double-clicked the table and opened the source. I did the same thing with the formats there, and removed all formats and then got back the ones used. Then I saved and updated the linked table. Re-did the format thingy and now it's not just one version of Courier missing, but:
The "Courier Bold" Font is not available.
"Courier New Bold" will be used in this session.
The "Courier" Font is not available.
"Courier New" will be used in this session.
The "Courier Bold" Font is not available.
"Courier New Bold" will be used in this session.
The "Courier" Font is not available.
"Courier New" will be used in this session.
The "Courier" Font is not available.

I am stumped. Don't know what to do more...
