FM 8.0.2 WinXP: Weird On-Screen Font Kerning

Help! I'm experiencing a very irritating bug that didn't seem to
appear until I applied one of the FM 8 patches. I'm running FM 8.0.2
on Windows XP. I don't remember if this bug started in 8.0.1 or
8.0.2, but it didn't exist in FM 8.0.0, and it doesn't exist in FM
7.
Simply put, the spacing of the on-screen characters is wrong. Some
characters are smashed together and others have large gaps after
them. In Times New Roman 10, for example, every lowercase "m" has a
large space after it. Other font sizes, and other fonts, are also
affected. The problem doesn't seem to go away unless I use a very
large zoom-in factor (or zoom out, but then the text is illegible
anyway).
This makes it difficult for me to read and edit my own text, and it
makes it difficult to (e.g.) remove unwanted spaces.
This problem doesn't appear in printouts or PDFs, which leads me to
suspect that it was done on purpose, in order to make the on-screen
position of each character more closely follow its position on paper
when printed. If so, it seems like a misguided idea, and I would
prefer at least the option to have things back the way they were. I
am used to the idea that lines may not come as far over on the
screen as they do on the printed page.
I prefer legibility.
Can anything be done about this?
Thanks!

Ed and Chris,
I see what you observe as well and the effect is apparently most visible with low zoom levels and low font sizes. There is a trade-off between letter placement precision and low-resolution hinting rules built into fonts.
The line composer always uses the font's characters precise width data (fractional widths) to decide how many characters fit on a single line. When it comes to displaying that line on-screen there are two options:
If you have DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On the same precise data is used to calculate the starting point of each single character. This is very useful if you want to align certain characters to other elements on a page. Especially with mono-spaced fonts this guarantees that lines with the same amount of characters end at the same point, not only in print but also on screen.
If you have DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=Off the display engine only uses the rounded width values returned from the hinting engine to place the characters, just ensuring they fit the line by modifying the spaces between words.
The difference between fractional widths and rounded widths gets lower if you increase font-size or zoom factor. Some character pairs are more affected in certain sizes/zooms. Also some fonts are more affected than others. The problem with monospaced fonts is that any rounding difference accumulates across the line.
From an authoring point of view fractional widths may not be the best choice, from a layout point of view they definitely are. I have to repeat that I never before heard any complaint from users where I recommended using DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On, maybe because most users work with higher zoom levels or rarely use a font like Times New Roman (as I guess that serif fonts might be more affected).
You have the option, and I just wanted to explain the background a little bit.

  • Weird Splash Screen with 32.1

We have this Download Error problem with our Magazine App. So I made an update with the new App Builder to v32.1. Now I get weird Splash Screens in the Developer App.
If I'm starting the App horizontally I get the vertically Splash Screen for a short time at the end of the startup process. If I'm starting the App vertically I get a rotated vertical Splash Screen for a short time at the end of the startup process. Please see screenshots attached.

  • Re: Weird grey screen after 10.5.2 update?

Left my computer on this morning (did not put it into sleep mode) and came back tonight to see this weird grey screen. Could not get it to "wake up." Eventually shut it down manually and re-started. Seemed to boot up normally, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this on their computers after the update?
BTW, I understand that repairing permissions is done best off the install DVD, but I recall there were some issues with permissions on the install DVD? Is that true?

Can't help with the gray screen problem, but WRT permissions repair, you understand wrongly. Leopard and Tiger use the permissions information from the volume it's repairing, so it doesn't matter where you doing it from.

  • Screen font size in bridge cc windows 7 not adjustable?

Having installed New CC Version yesterday i was kind of amazed about the screen font size especially for the file tree and the file folders on the left of the screen in Bridge (Windows 7). Is there a way to change the size of those screen fonts besides via the system fonts adjustnent that doesn't help in Bridge? Thank you.

Unfortunately this will require some new programming by Adobe and there's no way to know when that will happen. In the meantime, the only option I think you have available to you is to change your resolution so that your monitor is using fewer pixels per inch.
Kinda blows the whole value of the newer monitor but I suppose you can switch back and forth from low res when you are working in Bridge to high res when you are working in PS.
Sorry, but for the time being, that's about it.
    Best,
    Gary

  • Sometimes when I scroll up and down, the screen font gets funky.

Sometimes when I scroll down a page on a website, the screen font goes from being clear to blurry and kind of funky looking, like when you don't use Clear Type. Is there some setting I can change to prevent this from happening? With very small fonts, it sometimes becomes almost unreadable.

Hello toekneesee, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
[[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
[[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • PSE 9 Editor Screen Font Too Small

I just upgraded to PSE 9 when I purchased a new PC and High Def monitor set at the recommended resolution of 1920x1080. Now the font in the Editor is so small I cannot read it. Changing the monitor DPI does not change the Editor font. Is there a way to increase the Editor screen font?  I purchased the new PC and monitor specifically for PSE and Premier Elements use but haven't been able to get there yet.

I'm assuming by screen font, you mean the size of the type in the Editor, such as the type in the pull-down menus.  Obviously I can't know exactly how small your type is, but I recently "upgraded" from PSE 5 to 9 and found the type on the tools and menus to be small and hard to read.  The main problem is the type is all white and reversed out of dark black.  Don't the Adobe developers know that reverse type is harder to read than black on white?  The little black arrows on each tool that has options is almost impossible to see unless I work at night with no lights in the room.

  • TEXTEDIT -- 'screen font' size v. 'print font' size

Does TEXTEDIT allow documents to be viewed in a different font size than the one used for printing? --
-- i.e., e.g., is there any kind of 'zoom' feature that works strictly for the screen and is independent of printing?
I often like to print in a small size font (8 pt.) and am used to being able to do that (e.g., in MS WORD) while still viewing text on-screen in a readable font. However, when I choose 8 pt. for printing from TEXTEDIT, the screen font size shrinks too much to be readable and I haven't seen any way to make it larger without also affecting the printout.
    Any cure for this?
    Thanks.
(BTW, is there a better place -- i.e., discussion forum -- to ask TEXTEDIT questions?)

It doesn't appear so. Textedit is a fairly basic word processor and because of that you won't find features that are on other more elaborate apps.
I use an app. called Mariner Write for most of my main printing/word processing needs ...there are others out there as well (both free and not) - he's a site with a great selection and description of various 'word' apps...

  • Is there some way that the screen font size in inCopy can be enlarged?

The screen font is very small on a high res screen.

Sorry it took so long to reply to this. Unfortunately this is an issue that we are encountering in all applications right now. As the resolution of our monitors gets bigger, the interface elements get smaller which is not helpful when you don't have 20 year old eyes ;-) What you can do is switch to galley or story editor display by clicking the tabs in the upper left corner of the InCopy interface. Then, in the lower left corner, adjust the font and/or size of the text to be displayed in that view. This makes it much easier to read text without affecting the visual appearance of the actual layout. Any text changes you make in galley or story view will be reflected in the layout though.

  • Monitor screen font rendering

I have installed a Samsumg 20" syncmaster monitor to my G5 and made sure my screen resolution is set correctly. BIG problem: Screen fonts are not rendering correctly (bitmapped). Anyone seen this before and have solution? Thanks.

Hi artsnob56, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I have the same problem on my only Samsung, a 17" one hooked to a Mini, on mine it's the Monitor I'm pretty sure, a Panasonic & ViewSonic do not have that problem.

  • Screen fonts changed

For some reason, my screen fonts changed to Arial bold on random web pages (yahoo, google, amazon), but not all (apple, .mac, ebay, etc. are fine). Also, the fonts on all my incoming emails have changed to Arial bold. Any ideas how this happened and how to change them back? They are very hard to read.
    Thanks,

Forgot how this got resolved. Sorry.

  • Editing contents of screen font suitcases in OSX

I've received a number of fonts from clients in which the suitcase containing the screen fonts contains numerous additional screen fonts which I would like to remove.
For example, suppose a client has supplied a new font called "Obscurefont" which I need. The printer font for "Obscurefont" has been supplied as a separate file, as well as a screen font suitcase called "Bunchafonts". This screen font suitcase contains the needed screen font for "Obscurefont," but it also contains numerous other screen fonts for Helvetica, Times, etc. which are not necessary, and which often create font conflicts.
To fix this problem back in the old days, I would boot up my old G3 in OS9, double-click on the screen font suitcase, and drag out the offending extra screen fonts into the trash.
Is there any way, short of dusting off an old machine capable of booting in OS9, of editing the contents of a screen font suitcase?

I checked out a discussion on the OSX 10.4 forum which solved my problem, and made me feel a wee bit nostalgic... Turns out that the old "Font/DA Mover" app from years ago (System 6?) still runs in Classic mode, and it can still edit the contents of screen font suitcases. Painfully slow, but it works.

  • Screen Font Problem

I just loaded a new version of Freehand MX and I downloaded

the screen fonts in the Object Window do not display properly. This
is for all the properties and settings in the Object Window.... It

Are you on Mac or Windows? On some Windows systems, panel
    fonts display
poorly when system screen resolution is not set to 96 ppi.
Perhaps deleting the Preferences file would solve the
    problem. On a Mac find

  • New Build, Screen Fonts not sharp

    Hi,
Just finished building this system for my daughter.
    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI
    AMD 4000+ CPU
    Antec 480w Neopower
    Zalman S9500 CPU Cooling
    2 GB (1GB x 2) Corsair ValueSelect
    EVGA GeForce 6800GT
    74GB WD Raptor HD
    250GB Caviar HD
    X-Fi XtremeMusic Creative Blaster
    DVD Rom (Gigabyte)
    DVD Rewriter (Lite-On
    Cooler Master Mid Case
    AG Neovo E-19A
The screen fonts are somewhat washed out. I have installed the ClearType from MicrosoftToys, but it only helped a little bit. I am not pushing the Graphics Card and have everything set on default.
I did get a 4858 on 3dMark05, although the second part ran only 3fps. The details stated that there was no antialias or the other anti stuff to report.
Any ideas.  I thought I saw something in the CPU mag about making fonts sharper.
    Thanks,
    Swen

    Hi Workknot,
That system you're putting together looks close to what I just made for my daughter.  I ran 3DMark05 and AquaMark.  At times it hit 117fps.  3D 4800 and Aqua 62,000.  Mine system almost died with 3DMark05.  1-5fps.  Guess I will have to build one for myself.
I do have the ClearType fonts installed.  Works great on my system.  Nice and clear.  Maybe it will look better when I get the plastic off the glass.  Left it on to make sure I didn't goof it up in transet.
Don't know if you know, but there is a ClearType custom program.  Where you can do fine adjustments on your ClearType appearance.  I found it in Microsoft site under Microsoft Power Toys.  It's called ClearType Tuner.  Here's the link  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Take care Pops, and thanks for the info.
