While the headphone cord, headphones, and cord orientation(how stretched out or overlaping/folded it is) will make some difference in reception, the most important things are your local area(a large city with a crowded band of high powered radio stations, or an area with lower power stations that are more spread out on the band), how close you are to the transmitter of the station you are trying to tune to(A weak signal won't be good. One that is too strong also won't be good.), and if there are any very strong transmitters for stations close to it on the dial). Being in a large city will also pose the problem of signals reflecting off tall buildings and reaching the tuner a bit delayed.
