FM10/Acrobat X hypertext link problems

Hi All,
I just upgraded from FM7 to FM10 (10.0.2.419 version), and Acrobat 6 to Acrobat X, and found that the hypertext links (which worked well in Acrobat6) within the same book are broken in Acrobat X. However, the cross-book hyperlinks work well in Acrobat6 and Acrobat X.
I have 3 book files which contains cross-book hyperlinks and hypertext links within the same book. The book structure is as follows:
../book1/A.book
../book1/chapter1.fm
../book1/chapter2.fm
../book1/chapter3.fm
../book2/B.book
../book2/chapter1.fm
../book2/chapter2.fm
../book3/C.book
../book3/chapter1.fm
../book3/chapter2.fm
../book3/chapter3.fm
All hyperlinks are linked with hypertext markers (newlink and gotolink in 'Special -> Hypertext'). The converted PDFs are placed in the same folder.
The cross-book hyperlink works fine. My story is:
book1 has cross-book hyperlinks to book2 and book3. To add a hyperlink from "book1's chapter1" to "book2's marker1", I add 'gotolink ../book2/chapter2.fm:marker1' in file ../book1/chapter1.fm.
When converting these 3 books to pdf files, I'll open all book files, and print book to ps file one by one. After that, I'll use Acrobat Distiller (Acrobat X) to generate pdf files.
The cross-book hyperlink 'gotolink ../book2/chapter2.fm:marker1' will be converted, the target filename will be 'book2.pdf', and the destination name will be 'M8.8.newlink.marker1'.
The hypertext link within the same book is broken. The scenario is:
In book1, I want to add a hyperlink from chapter3 to chapter1, so I insert the hypertext marker 'gotolink chapter1.fm:marker2' in file chapter3.fm. After the conversion, the target filename becomes 'chapter1.pdf' (it should be 'book1.pdf'), and the destination name becomes 'M5.8.newlink.marker2' (it should be 'M8.newlink.marker2').
Am I missing something for the hyperlink above? Any thoughts?
Regards,
Maggie Yeong

I think I am having the same problem and I suppose the issue is a matter of semantics and familiarity with linking in general. What I have is a PDF document with web links of the format that Kim describes, but my problem is that this format only appears to work for external links. So I need to ask what should kind of linking is suitable to internal references. For example, "<a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#nameddest=alarm&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>" seems to work for me on a browser viewed PDF document only if "IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf" is not the document containing the link. In other words named destinations do not seem to be the correct linking method for internal links in HTTP served documents. Perhaps the problem is the browser which is fix by workplace standards at IE7?

  • InDesign to Adobe Acrobat to Adobe Reader Link problem

Hi - I'm responsible for a long conversation about link problems in creating file links in InDesign that did not work in Acrobat. At the end of that long discussion, I thought I solved the problem, but didn't. Since then, I've been MUCH more observant.
The problem appears to take place in Adobe Reader.
My home computer on Win7 is different than my work Computer (XP), but I have the same software on both.
At work, I discovered that when I clicked on a PDF, it worked fine, that its links opened a new PDF window, but when I clicked on links on the second document, the links failed and Microsoft returned an error message telling me that I was screwed. Because I was screwed, I couldn't see what was in the path of that error.
It turns out that for some unknown reason (which you might clarify for me), my Adobe Readers are attempting to open my documents in Internet Explorer and that just won't work.
What I observed at home is that I made 5 test documents in ID, and ported them to Acrobat. As it turns out, my default for opening PDFs is Adobe Reader, which I saw on the chrome of the first document I opened. When I clicked a link, and I got the error message, I noticed my browser was up.
When I set my default for opening in Acrobat, everything worked like a charm! How about that!
Now then, what that says to me is that Adobe Reader is to be used exclusively with a browser, so if the people who are going to read your internal PDF files with Reader without those files being on a web server of some type, you are totally screwed. The only way you can use Reader is if you click on the file and bring it up directly. Don't rely on linking to other documents.
I mean, that is what it seems to me.
Now, I am creating a big project for an environment without a webserver and obviously my sense of panic is palpable. That said, I believe that all my users can read my files using Acrobat (to be tested tomorrow), which I hope means I can breathe a bit easier.
Do any of you have any thoughts on this subject? If you are really curious, I can make a packet of test files available.

    Karen_Little wrote:
The files and the PDFs are all in the same directory.
The tests are on local drives. All indesign files and their related PDFs were in the same directory.
The same for Word and its related PDFs. Note that the PDFs created by Word then read by Adobe Reader worked correctly. They all opened in Adobe Reader.
If the default program for opening PDFs is Acrobat, everything works correctly, with the added benefit of everything opening in a different window, which is what I want (yet to be tested at work). If the default program is Adobe Reader, the second generation of links do NOT work because Reader opens in Internet Explorer.
When I open a Word-created PDF with Acrobat, view the link, and click to the Actions menu, the action is "Open a file"
When I open an InDesign PDF with Acrobat and do the same, the action says "Open a web link"
    Big BIG BIG bug.
Are you seeing the link commands by editing them in Acrobat? If not, try, so you can see the exact command and file or URL instruction. It still may be a bug, but you'll have better evidence when you report it here:
Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form
And, you might want to try correcting a link command in Acrobat, to see if can work for both Acrobat and Reader.

  • Link problem when converting MS Word to PDF with Acrobat Professional

    Hello all,
    I have the following problem:
When I have a MS Word document with links to other files inside and I convert it to PDF the links are converted from relative paths to absolute paths.
The problem is created by Acrobat as the links in the MS Word file are relative (I have checked this by moving the different docs to another directory and confirmed that the links still work after the move).
How can I make the paths in the PDF relative again? I know there is a plugin from Evermap (and I can confirm this works) but I do not want to use this plugin (=read: spend another $190 dollars) as the license for the Acrobat Professional is expensive enough . Is there a way I can convert the paths within Adobe Acrobat easily? Or better: can I adjust the settings in Acrobat to a new standard when all converted documents contain relative paths?
    Backgroundinfo:
    - Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional
    - Windows XP (SP2)
    - MS Word 2002
    Thanks in advance!
    Bart

    Dear Steve,
I have tried what u suggested: I put all the documents (word + linked documents) into the same folder on the local-drive (C). Then I recreated the links  in the word document to be sure they were matching. After that I converted the word document to an PDF and confirmed the links were still working in the PDF document.
Then the biggest challenge: copying the pdf and linked documents to another drive&directory. As you can guess: Unfortunately the links did not work anymore.
    Any other suggestions?
If I use the Evermap-tool (30 day-trial) I can look at the links and this is how it is 'coded' in the pdf.
    first link: ../../../../test/link_a.pdf
    second link: ../../../../test/link_b.pdf
and yes this will work if you put the documents in the directory test in the root of the local-drive but not in a different subdirectory.
    Anyone ideas?

  • Some hypertext links broken in generated PDF

    Hi all,
I'm using FM 8.0p277 to generate a PDF of a book which uses hypertext TOC links to different chapters and topics. We've been using the same process for some time without any problems:
Generate TOC -> Print book to .ps -> run Distiller.
However, recently some of the hypertext links have ceased to work, seemingly at random.
Sample marker text from a nonfunctional link: openObjectId 01 PP System Theory of Op.fm:2 699335
Sample marker text from a functional link: openObjectId 02 PP Intro & Sys Rqts.fm:2 683648
The broken links are not isolated to a certain paragraph style or even to a specific book.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I'm really at a loss.

    Arnis Gubins
Thank you very much; the broken links were pointing to markers I'd removed during the release process instead of where I thought they were supposed to be pointing. I think it was a PEBKAC issue, but I never would have noticed if you hadn't mentioned checking the link properties.
I regenerated the PDF after fixing the markers in FM and everything seems to be working fine.
    Thanks again!

  • How to: Save as PDF AND preserve Word bookmarks/hypertext links

Is there a way to save a word doc as PDF in OS 10.4 that enables the hypertext links in the PDF file? When I save, i just get blue underlined text in the PDF but it cannot be clicked on to follow the links embedded in the original Word doc.
    thanks for any solutions/workarounds.

I wonder if this is actually a limitation of Preview... I've made PDF files with Illustrator that, when I open them in Acrobat have active links. The links don't work when I open the same file with Preview.

  • Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?

Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?
Depending on the system version, and Office Word version:
    - a pure URL link starting with http or even www sometimes works in PDF, either produced by Aperçu or Adobe, sometimes does not work;
    - other kind of links where the text under display is not a URL, never work!
I like everything with Apple computers and software, except PDF generation. Output files are usually bigger in size, and no better quality, than under Windows. Furthermore, it is weird that something as common as hyperlinks does not work correctly!
I related this question with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but the problem is still there with Mac OS Lion.
This problem seems to have been around for years, without any proper solution from Apple and/or Adobe! To me, this is very embarrassing!

    Greetings NoNameGiven,
If I understand the problem correctly (I’m not sure I do) you would prefer ‘iii’ to be read as “eye eye eye” rather than “three”? The alt text property is the only way that I know of to make this happen. Hope this helps.

  • IWeb hypertext links to pages from my site not "viewable" in some browsers

I am new to iWeb 08. iWeb created hypertext links to eleven pages from my "top level" site are not "clickable" or viewable in some browsers yet the hyperlinks I added on top page to other sites don't present a problem.
No problem with Safari or AOL Desktop Version 1.2 or Firefox browsers. However, AOL Ver 10.3.7 (rev 4136.310) only shows other site links and NOT the page links at the top of site page. Only a dot is visible where links to other pages in the site. I thought it could have been a Java Scripts problem so I updated my AOL to latest JAVA. Not concerned for my part but others with Mac AOL may have same problem.
Is there something I could do diferent at my site or is this another AOL shortcoming?
    See: http://web.mac.com/louiedea/OceanaMed_Cruise_2008/MedCruise08.html
    Thanks, LouieDeA

    Gayle,
No solution yet. I am sure it is a shortcoming of AOL's Mac browser but am trying to contact AOL support (difficult now that they are free). I don't use their browser but there are probably those that do. I presume you don't have that problem when you use Safari, etc?

  • Acrobat Pro 9 Link Tool

    Hi,
I am using the link tool in Acrobat Pro to link certain parts of a pdf document and then have the pdf accessed from a web browser
The links work fine on the browser, but it want the linked document to open in a new browser window. (ie: target=_blank)
It is currently opening it up in the same browser
Any ideas how to achieve this ?
    Thanks
    Geoff

Thanks for your suggestion. I've worked with one file at a time. So this is not an exactly answer. I'm afraid it's not possible to find a right solution: my problem has disappeared after another restart... So I'm confused now once more time. Maybe I should reinstall Acrobat - I've got upgraded version. But on the other hand: this software have worked fine for a couple of months.
Conlusion: the problem is magically resolved and normal solution remains unkown. I'm curious about it.
    Greetings

  • Hypertext link in email opens my previous version of Firefox, not the one I upgraded to.

Greetings, each time I upgrade to the newest version of Firefox I'm running into this problem. If I open the browser directly, it opens the newest version. If I click a hypertext link in my email, it opens my previous version and I get a message saying I need to upgrade. How do I fix this?

I also had this problem. After the hint from jsher2000 above, I checked the add-ons.
It's still called "AVG Safe Search" in the Add-ons Manager in Firefox. (Either under Tools/Add-ons or under the orange "Firefox": Add-ons (Or Ctrl-shift A)
I found AVG Safe Search disabled in my list of add ons, and enabled it.
Voila, the icons now appeared in the searches!

application did you test the hyperlinks with on the Mac? What application

  • Hypertext Links in PPT with Presenter Quiz breaks Quiz

I have training developed in PowerPoint 2003, using Presenter 7.0.5. I have added hypertext links, which link to hidden slides in the same file. There are also knowledge check questions within each file. When a student clicks on the hypertext link there is an error that tells them they are not finished with the quiz, and if they select continue, it will break the quiz.

7.0.1 is a pretty buggy version of Presenter. Have you tried going to 7.0.2, 7.0.5 or 7.0.6 through the Adobe Updater? If it is identified at what point in the updating process there was a change that affected the reporting functionality to your LMS, that may help identify the problem. Personally, I reccomend that you don't even touch Presenter unless is it on 7.0.5 or newer, as there it too great a risk of it not doing what you expect or just crashing and losing all your work.
Also, are you accessing the training in IE9? I recall that there was some compatibilty issues with IE 9 and Presenter, but I thought that was resolved in 7.0.7.

  • Adobe Acrobat  has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Just recently when I launch Acrobat X after about 10 seconds I get this error, "Adobe Acrobat has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience."  I can create PDFs and open PDFs for 10 seconds.  I've done a repair of Acrobat,  I tried a new user account, and  I disbled all my start up items.  I still get the same error  I have no clue what to do.  Any suggestions?
    J.R.

OK Will,  I pressed ctrl + Shift and double clicked on a desktop icon of a file.pdf I had saved there and it opened and is still open.  By not pressing ctrl + Shift the file opens then closes with that error in about10 seconds.
So now, what has that proved to us is the issue?  Doesn't that load Acrobat without all the extensions?
This issue just started a few days ago and all I remember installing on my computer were some Window's updates.

  • Is there a way to open a hypertext link in my folio?

    Hi! i have a question:
Is there a way to open a hypertext link in my folio with java script commands inside an HTML content of my magazine,
so that it uses the browser of the folio, rather than forcing me to leave the app and use an external browser?
    Thanks
    TKART staff

No - you would have to rebuild the site in iWeb '06.
Even if you did this you couldn't update the site built with iWeb '08.
You need to install iLife '08 on the other computer - why can't you?

  • "Link Problem" in Incident Form does not seem to work right? How do I do it correctly?

    1. The Link Problem tool in the task pane on our Incidents, do not seem to actually link the Incident to the Problem.
    2. I can link the two by going to the Problem and adding it on the related items tab, but this is very time consuming in a call center environment, especially during an outage where we are relying a lot more on Problem and root cause analysis.
    3. I have tried creating the incident and applying, then doing the Link Problem tool and selecting the problem, then applying again and selecting OK to close the incident. Again it doesn't work for me.
What am I doing wrong, number one?
Can we do this without manually opening the problem for every incident and attaching from there?
    3. Can I build an incident template that will automate the Attachment to the problem at creation? (Tried this today to and it wouldn't work, but then again, the Link Problem might again be the culprit) This would be great for real time  saving during
an outage. Once outage is found, I could create the template with all the necessary items filled out, and would like to have it automatically attach to the specific problem I choose at template creation, and that way analysts can simply apply template, and
click OK when they get a call related to the outage.

    Thanks  for the response Thomas!
The functionality seems to work just fine. I use the LINK PROBLEM and it pops up the problem search box, I search for and select a Problem, I then select it and click ok, and I get no error saying the relationship was not created.
The problem is, when I open the problem after that, there is never any relationship showing in related items there, as it says there should be.
Also, to point out, I am talking about newly created Incidents. I tried even using APPLY prior to doing the LINK PROBLEM but it still did not work. I suspect it may be a workflow problem, where the workflow to create the incident has not completed, there
for the relationship is not completed.... and I get no error.
In my work environment, we have analysts during outages taking a call every 30 seconds, and I need a more efficient way for this system to work. As of now, they spend 1-2 minutes doing the ticket, and that is too long.
I have decided to try a newb way, where I created an Incident (GENERIC OUTAGE) that folks can use, and every 15-30 minutes during an outage, I can open the problem and search for open incidents with that title, and attach all that I find from the problem
side. This is assuming that once attached they will not show up in the search to attach the next time lol. Also this assumes that if attached from the problem, they will auto resolve when the problem is resolved.
I am rusty on my programming, and am currently trying to get refreshed. I am sure that would come in handy for this :)
Oh and lastly, one additional tidbit that will make this clearer, with regard to work flow, we re also running our Service Manager in our help desk, virtualized, as they have not upgraded to Win 7 yet :(. So that compiles my time to add ticket issue :(.
