FM11 .fm file shows as M (MIF) in book.

A FM11 file has a .fm extension and opens fine, but when I add it to a book FM shows the message "The file <name> is not in recognizable format". In the book, the file shows the M icon for MIF file. I'm sure I never saved it as MIF. I resaved it as .fm, then deleted and re-added it to the book, but it still shows the M icon in the book. What to do?

Does this also happen when you add the file to a new book file? If so, try MIF-washing the problem file (save as MIF, open the MIF and save as .fm) and try again. If not, then create a new book file and add the other files.

Log in to your account, and move all your files to your home folder. No other users should be able to access them there and they won't show up with a Spotlight search.
Make sure your kids' account(s) do not have admin privileges.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

It should be an attachment. Your Mac just displays a preview of certain attachments (such as .pdfs) in the body of the message. A PC, for example, will see it as an attached file rather than a preview.
You can save the attachment on your Mac by Control-clicking on it and selecting Save Attachment.

It could be that the PDF file you're converting was created using a third-party application, and it doesn't contain all the information necessary to ensure a clean conversion. Have you had similar troubles converting other PDF files?

Files showing up on iTunes, but not in iPod

So a few days back, my iPod acted up and restored itself, sort of. Well, my iPod synced itself and added the music files from my library. So now when I look at my iPod files through my iTunes, the files show up grey and i can't play them yet they're still showing up. when i go into my ipod to find them, they aren't in there at all. anybody know what's going on?

Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

Photoshop Elements 5.0, 1 in 10 RAW files show broken

I have PS Elements 5.0 running on Vista Home Premium. I am shooting with a Sony Alpha 100 and the RAW files are .ARW. Approximately 1 in 10 of my RAW files show an end-of-file error. I've not yet update the firmware (should I need to?), but I have had a friend open up the same files in CS3 no problem. I have tried new memory sticks, used my laptop with the same Elements licence and I'm still having problems. It comes up with a greyed out box. If I delete the files from the HD and reinstall them, the same ones show up as broken, so it's something specific to these files. They open okay in the Sony RAW editor that came with the camera. What to do!?

.xmp files showing up in my SD card when accessing RAW files in Finder... Very weird!

I'm having a very weird problem... I'm using a 4GB Scandisk SD card and am shooting my RAW photos on a Canon Rebel 2ti. I'm using a Macbook Pro, 2011 2.3Ghz i5, 4gb of Ram, with Lion v. 10.7.2 and am accessing the SD card RAW files through Finder. I'm secondary clicking on the image file or double clicking them as PS is my default opening program for RAW files. When I hit the "Done" key on any of the Photoshop files, a new .xmp file shows up in Finder. When I open it, it's a Microsoft Messenger for Mac 8 License Agreement...
I do have Microsoft Office 11 installed and have never used Messenger. It's not a huge deal, but it's driving me crazy and it's totally weird!

It's a lot of separate, unrelated things happening to you in one long chain, but each step is normal and explainable.
You are opening raw files straight from a card into Photoshop. Photoshop will open them in Camera Raw. Camera Raw's preferences are set to save changes in XMP sidecar files. You are clicking Done, which applies the default Camera Raw processing, and that change generates an XMP file to store these new settings. That's why an XMP file is showing up in the same folder. On a computer, that's fine. But writing back out to a camera card with a device other than the camera is not recommended. What is recommended is to use another, faster way to preview raw files on a card without changing them (Adobe Bridge, Lightroom, Apple Aperture, Photo Mechanic, etc.), so that the card's left untouched as it should be.
If you don't want the XMP file to be generated, you have to do just one of the following:
In Camera Raw preferences, change the "Save image settings in" option to "Camera Raw database", not "Sidecar XMP files".
Instead of clicking Done every time, which applies any changes, click Cancel instead, if you were just looking and not editing.
Use something other than Photoshop to preview raw files. Most of the other ways are faster than opening them in Photoshop. The recommended workflow is to use a camera downloading utility to look through all the images on the card at once (instead of one by one as you are doing), and then select only the ones you want to bring into your computer. Bridge (via File > Get Photos from Camera, not by browsing), Lightroom, Aperture, and iPhoto all have that capability.
As to why double-clicking an XMP file opens a Messenger license agreement: As you probably know, the system has to figure out what program should open a file with a given filename extension. It sounds like maybe both Adobe and Microsoft have used the XMP extension, and the Office installer probably associated it with some type of MS Messenger file. So when you double-click an XMP file, Mac OS X opens Messenger. Since you have not used Messenger before, it's showing you the "first run" screen for Messenger, and Microsoft has set it up so that you have to click Agree on the license agreement before using it. If you never click Agree, it will still be the "first run" next time you open Messenger, whether you meant to or not. You can use Get Info in the Mac Finder to reassign XMP to open in another program.
You probably didn't expect so many things to happen from just opening a raw file off a card, but that's the way it worked out.

Sometimes the clips actually show up with the current import but take on the video information from a previously imported file.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

I searched and found another solution, because with the code from the link above I got everytime a short dump, maybe I did something wrong.
The solution works with Adobe Form
1. I used the class cl_igs_chart_engine to create a chart with my data and customizing to get the binary data of the image.
2. Convert the binary tab to xstring.
3. You can use this xstring on the Adobe Form to display the image.
Maybe the following tips are useful.
*How to get the data of chart you can see in the class
CL_TIME_CHART_SIMPLE (use cl_gui_chart_engine for the chart but class cl_igs_chart_engine for saving the image)
*How to bind the image to the importing parameter (xstring)

Strange System Files Showing Up Everywhere

Roughly two weeks ago I started noticing all kinds of unfamiliar system files showing up in a number of my folders. They are always grayed out and as far as I know have nothing to do with the actual folder. These are just straight forward folders and/or my actual Mac hard drive. Any idea where they may be coming from? I don't know that any of them are actual system files that might be important. The second link, the CODES folder should be the only file in that folder. I have a macbook pro that needed a new harddrive. I backed up iphoto and put it on my new harddrive from time capsule. The photo files show up and the correct number of images but no images show up. How can I retrieve them?

So, your best bet is to ask over there......iPhoto
In general, you need to restore the entire iPhoto library from the Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule. It is located in your Pictures folder.
Once the iPhoto library has been restored to the Pictures folder on your Mac, you will need to "point" iPhoto at that library by holding down the option key on your Mac while you click to start the iPhoto application on the dock.
These are general guidelines, not specific instructions, which should come from the iPhoto experts.

.nib files showing up as folders

I have all the developer tools installed but all my .nib files show up as folders in finder. It's a pain in the a$$ to keep having to drag these things to the dock to get them to open. How do I get them to show up as interface builder files?

Don't worry about them. Among the things iPhoto 6 does when it updates, is updates the content of the thumbnails to be more compatible with iPhoto 6. If you interrupted that process when it was doing it, it may leave behind temporary information that should not be deleted.
