FMLE Jitter on Mac

I'm using a Mac tower, dual hex core, 16gb mem, a real beefy computer that's normally used for video editing.  I'm using this in conjunction with a Blackmagic Decklink Studio capture card, which is receiving 1080i 59.94fps video.
I have the following Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE) settings:
H.264 Level 5.1, keyframe frequency 2 seconds
30fps Frame Rate (for output)
1920x1080 input size, with "maintain aspect ratio" checked
2 renditions, one at 2200kbps/1280x720 resolution, one at 600kbps/320x180kbps
Audio is in AAC format, stereo, 44.1khz, 128kbps bit rate
I'm streaming this to a Flash Media Server (FMS) on Akamai.
I keep getting a fair amount of jitter.  I've tried many many combinations and permutations of settings, but to no avail.  The settings listed are the settings that seem to minimize jitter most effectively for my setup.  Even so, when the output is viewed on Akamai, the video is jumpy, freezing frames for a fraction of a second, or seemingly skipping frames.  Even when I change the output video to 1920x1080 (because I've read that making the input/output the same resolution helps), I still get this slight jitter effect.
The output statistics are standard.  No drops, no buffer, constant frame rate output, everything looks to be operating properly.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?  I've also tried running FMLE from the command line on my Mac, but I keep having troubles with the FMS authentication, so I don't know if that would help or not.
I've tried contacting Adobe a few times now, but it seems that Adobe does not have a dedicated team to this product like its others, and getting support for this product over phone or chat has been surprisingly difficult.

Thanks for the reply.
I've used Windows machines before with no problems, but this studio that I'm working with wanted to start doing live streams, and only has Macs in the studio.  So naturally they want to take one of the $4000 machines they have for video editing, and also use it for live streams, as opposed to buying a new PC for live streaming.
As for playback, when I've used Windows machines for encoding with FMLE, I've had no problems with playback on Macs.  When encoding with a Mac, both PCs and Macs experience playback jitter.  Also if I use FMLE on a Mac to record an FLV directly to disk, the FLV will have some jitter as well, so it seems to be an issue on the encoding end, not the playback end.
I've not tried SD sources, because my clients would rather buy a new computer than go SD (client is making the HD aspect of the stream a big selling point in their marketing), but I have used less taxing configurations, such as only encoding a 320x180 600kbps stream, and still have seen some jitter.  But even with my CPU cruising at 11% for that 320x180 stream, it's having issues.
Another fun fact: my company had a license for Wirecast laying around, and I tried it out on this computer.  Same problems, actually to a greater degree.
Thanks for the link.  That's actually very similar to a PC encoder that my company just built, we just have a dual quad core to handle the HD encoding, but we're still waiting for it to come to us from the west coast.  We may end up carting it to and from the studio for their live streams, if we can't get this resolved.
Finally, Adobe has been having me do encoding tests for them, and has been running encoding tests of their own in the lab.  They say they've been able to reproduce the jitter problem on a Mac in their lab, and are working on a way to resolve the issue.  Here's hoping...

  • Highest possible quality setup on FMLE on a mac mini.

What is the highest quality setup I could put on a mac mini and use FMLE?  I want to maximize video quality but the HD camera I bought doesn't work.  This is on a mac mini so hardware based capture cards are not an option.

    Yes you can use VNC.
Install a vnc server on her mac.OSXvnc
Install a vnc client on your mac.chicken of the vnc is a good vnc client.

  • FMLE 3.2 MAC - hard cap of 16 fps no matter what

I'm running FMLE 3.2 on a Mac Pro with 2 quad core CPUs and 6gb of RAM.  I'm capturing with a Black Magic Design Intensity Pro.  I'm able to capture using Final Cut at 720p and 60fps with no problems.
However, in FMLE, no matter what settings I choose, the capture frames per second seems restricted to 16 FPS.  I've tried change the Encoding Options Frame rate - whether I set it to 60 or 30 or anything else, always encoding actually occurs at 16fps.  I've also tried changing the bitrate, output size, and tested both streaming to FMS, saving to disk or both together.
My CPU isn't breaking a sweat during the FMLE encoding process to I know its not that.  Anyone else had any issues like this?

Not sure I can help you but I´m on mac too (single quadcore cpu) got the same BM capturecard you have, I use camtwist and the 3.2 for my broadcast to justin.tv.
If I set my fps to 25 it push through pretty much the same or just a little under, it can vary over time though but not much. Guess it depends on my bandwith I´m getting at the moment how much it would change. All the settings in FMLE will probably affect your fps so I think you need to try different combinations with the settings.
If I for example go over 30 fps, increase my kbps to high and use to big input and output size my fps can drop really low. But with 25 fps VP6, 800 kbps, output 720*404 I can go as high as FMLE let me with the input. So there seem to be limits and combinations one need to figure out to make it run the best it can depending what hardware one might have.
For example in my case my upstream at the moment is just round 2 mbps so that make it useless to go over 800 kbps, so there´s one limit that affects things.
My audio is set to 44100, 224 and stereo.
    Sorry I can´t help more.
    Good luck

Just getting started with this and I am hitting a bump in the road. I have a Sony HVR-Z1U camera connected via firewire and in the devices drop down the only thing being shown is the Built in isight. How do i get the external camera recognized?

  • Optimizing FMLE for Mac ?

We use FMLE 3.2 for our webcast on multiple Youtube Pro Channels.
Our I/O devices are Blackmagic Intensity Extreme Thunderbolt for the Macs ( Mac Book Pro 17 inch 2011 iCore 7 )
and Black Magic Ultra Studio SDI via USB3 for the PCs (Sony iCore 5 2011 )
When trying to stream in higher resolutions or higer bitrates (over 350k) with the Mac , it seems the software request nearly all the CPU from the Mac creating a delay in the preview and some jitter
for the user ( loss of frames ).
We can only uses a max of 350k bitrates with the Mac without fluidity issues while we can use the full range of resolutions and bit rates with the PCs even though the
PC are less powerfull than the Macs we use.
Is there a way the optimize the use of the CPU with the Macs? is there a way the use the GPU?
After some test with the new Wirecast for Youtube we realize we don't have those problems as it allows to use the GPU to help the CPU to encode.
We much prefer to use FMLE as it has more bitrate, encoding and resolution option but unfortunately it limits our more powerfull computers to lower bitrates.
What is causing those problems and why is FMLE more ressources hungry with a Mac than with a PC?

We are considering the new Macbook Pros for use with FMLE and this post definitely has me second guessing our decision.  It seems like such a fundemental issue you report that I am really surprised you haven't received a response to it.  Unless of course this is exactly the kind of retribution that Adobe is aiming for: to dissuade potential Mac customers for fear of incompatibility with FMLE. I have heard other stories of issues with FMLE and the Mac Mountain Lion OS.

  • Please help! preview input in FML

Hi... I am using FML 3.1 on my Mac but using Parallels so it's running in Windows 7.  I am using a Logitech quickcam pro af and for some reason my preview input looks too bright/no contrast while the output preview looks just great.  How do I fix my preview input so that it looks true?  Below is a picture of what I'm talking about... please help, I have no idea what's wrong and I've been googling for the last half hour trying to find others with same problem but having NO luck!
    Thanks!

Just check if your crop checkbox is not checked. If it is, please uncheck it, and see if things improve. Just a guess, though I am not sure, if that is the casue of the problem.
Just one question, I needed to ask. FMLE 3.1 is available for MAC, so why do you need it to run on Parallels. FMLE 3.1 (MAC version) would run directly on MAC.
Try downloading the FMLE 3.1 for MAC from adobe.com, and see if the problem exists.

  • Encoding high quality - please advise

I am using FMLE on a mac mini.  My original intent was to stream live but that has now been dropped and I just use the encoded videos broken into five minute chunks.  I upload those to amazon cloudfront and stream them.  All this is automated and the control of FMLE is done with FMLEcmd which is the command line interface.  I just bought a HD camera with DV support and FMLE did not support it.  I just figured out that is because it uses MPEG-4 encoding.  So now I am rethinking what I am doing.  I do not need live streaming but I do need live control of a camera.  All my encoding is set to go on and off at set times and then automatically upload to the server for streaming.  I should also mention that I want to use cameras that can use lenses such as fisheye.
Can anyone advise me on the best possible quality setup I can get out of FMLE or an alternative method for recording video from a mac mini on a command line interface.
    Thanks!

Is there an option in your camera to give output in DV format and not in HDV (mpeg-2)? FMLE works fine with DV cameras.
If you are looking for HD quality, you can use capture cards capable of capturing HD sizes such as Osprey 700 and Blackmagic cards.
FMLE has various codec options such as h.264, vp6, aac, mp3. Output quality will depend upon the source content, bandwidth and CPU. You will have to set-up fmle based upon these 3 parameters.

  • Black Magic Video USB Video Recorder H.264 Encoding

Quick question for you smart folks.  Will the BlackMagic USB Video Recorder c/w H.264 code work with FLME for MAC?
It states it works for iTunes, iPod, iPhone YouTube etc etc......but really would like to know if it will work with FMLE 3.2 Mac
    Appreciate the help
    KC

The reason why the Blackmagic H.264 Recorder doesn't work - is that FMLE is looking for RAW uncompressed video.  Lots of USB devices are encoding the output signal into MPEG 2 and other formats that FMLE and Windows Media Encoder 9/Expression Encoder 4 don't understand or can't decode.
Those using Livestream.com's service, their encoding application (without FMLE in the middle) will see the output of of the Blackmagic H.264 Recorder.

  • Flash media live encoder help!

We've been using Flash Media Live Encoder for our streaming services at our church and have been saving the files on our desktop. It is an F4V file and we are having troubles finding a software that could burn the services we've recorded via DVD. We are currently running FMLE on a Mac and any helpful tips, advice, etc. is appreciated. I am not really an expert on this field so I can use some very specific instructions/suggestions pls! Thanks so much!

  • New FMLE Mac Build available !

    Hi All,
We have uploaded a new Flash Media Live Encoder build to www.adobe.com/go/fmle for Mac 10.7.3
    This build fixes below issues
Flash Media Live Encoder crashes on exit on Mac OS X version 10.7.x
Video previews are not available on Mac OS X version 10.7.3
    Thanks
    Team FMLE

I installed FLME on self build machine. Core i7 3770K, 16GB RAM, Vertex4 SSD 256GB, GigabyteZ77X UP5 TH MB, Blackmagic Intensity Pro.
With Windows 7 it works fine, 3 streams:
    format: h264 (baseline 3.0 !!!!)
    framerate:  25 fps
    input size 1920x1080
    Bit Rate:
    1. 2500 kbps   1280x720
    2. 850   kbps   852x480
    3. 350   kbps   480x270
    Processor load 60-70%
On the same computer with Mac OS X 10.8.2 I can stream only 1 video output, processor load 90% and lot of droped frames. The same happens on MacBook Pro (Early 2011).
Looks like FLME is not to optimized to work with OS X.

  • FMLE Mac VS Windows Same Computer - Issues

    Hello all,
I am currently testing FMLE on a 2,1 Mac Pro with 8 Core 2.66ghz Xeon. Blackmagic Decklink Mini Recorder as input device.
I want to stream at least 2 streams, 720p at 1500k and 360p at 800k.
I CAN stream just fine with windows, average 80% cpu usage all across the board and 1 gig ram ish used.
I CANNOT stream fine with MAC... 100% CPU and multiple frame drops and still 1 gig ram used.
This is the exact same computer and input device graphics card etc.
Who do you think could be causing the issue with the exact same hardware? I was always under the impression Mac was less resource hungry... but it does not seem that way in this case.
I am using the latest 9.xx BlackMagic drivers. Not using 10.xx because I cannot get it to work at all in either OS.
I want to use mac because of the built in AAC support BTW...
What do I need to check/verify?
    Thanks for any help!

    Some more troubleshooting.
I can import with FMLE in Windows at 1920 x 1080 and export just fine as stated above with little to no frame drop.
I have found if I import on the Mac in FMLE at 1280x720 I can now stream 2 streams as noted above with much less frame drop. Importing at 30fps and streaming above 25 on average...
FYI I have tried on OSX Lion and Yosemite. Blackmagic 9.xx and 10.xx most current drivers. No differences.
Also tried changing settings in FMLE such as deinterlace and mp3/aac etc.
