Fn acting as the mute key

I use a T60 2007-4CG, which I love and decided to promote it to W7 because of its very decent screen and sufficient hardware capabilities.
I applied all BIOS patches and I now face one weird issue : I discovered in W7 that each time I pressed the Fn key, it was interpreted as if I pressed the mute key.
Initially, I found it was a problem related to W7, so I reinstalled it, with no luck. Still the same problem.
After several tests, I'm now sure it is related to the BIOS :
when booting and accessing the BIOS, I can no longer press Fn + Page Up to lit the keyboard. This means that even in the BIOS, the key is not correctly interpreted.
Moreover, if I activate the Fn lock in the BIOS, then, the behaviour is slightly different : the first hit on Fn acts like mute, but the second (if pressed fast enough) acts as the Fn key has been pressed, thus enabling me to lit the keyboard (for example). This trick works in the BIOS setup pages and in W7.
I tried to downgrade my BIOS, but it did not change anything.
Has anyone encountered the same issue ? Is there anything I can try to restore the normal behaviour of the Fn key ?
Thanks

A full symptom list can be found here (and in a couple of the posts above it) - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-Questions/Tapping-FN-key-acts-as-if-it-s-being-held-D...
I'm not a fan of reposting but I would really like to get an answer on this, it's been so long since I originally posted it and I am convinced that it is a firmware issue (see other post for reasons; it's OS-independent but only happens when actually *in* an OS, not in BIOS settings pages or the GRUB bootloader)

  • Sound Icon does not change when pressing the Mute Key

    Hey guys,
I have a really annoying problem that only seems to start a few hours after booting my MacBook, it does not happen on a fresh reboot. When I press the mute button on the keyboard it does not mute the sound and the icon in the top bar does not show that the sound has been muted.
If I go to the control panel for the audio and do the same thing with the panel open it works just fine and the icon shows that the audio has been muted. Do any of you have this issue and how can I report this bug to Apple so they can adress it in their next OS upgrade.
    Best Regards

I am having the exact same problem. It is even worse because it has happened to me in class before.
The other day, after coming to class I opened up my MBP from sleep intending to work on some things for class. As a general practice I hit the mute key as soon as I open the Mac. This always worked well with my Powerbook. However the system did not mute and the connection noises from iChat played out. This upset the teacher who glared at me for the rest of the class.
This is not an isolated incident either. I have had the tool bar and the translucent icon disagree a number of times.
I have found that if I hit the mute key twice it will generally correct the problem. But it is annoying. I hope someone at Apple is listening (in more than one way it would seem)

  • I want to make a speakable command for the mute key.

I want to make the mute fearute a speakable command. If I could find a way to make a keyboard shortcut with the command key, I could do the rest. Any suggestions?

I don't get the "Use Artboards" dialog box option when I try to save.  It is grayed out.

  • Repurpose the O-Key on the windpad 110W to act as the windows key

    Hello everyone,
I have spent the last two weeks of my spare time to write a piece of software that you can run on your windpad 110W in order to repurpose the O-Key, which normally makes o-easy.exe visible, to work as the windows key. Install it, log out, log in again, change to the desktop and then press the O-Key, it will flip you forth and back between metro and desktop, just like the windows key from an ordinary keyboard (or the windows sensor key from my surface with windows rt).
I will not accept bug reports from people who complain that it doesn't work right after login without having invoked the desktop at least once. This doesn't even work if you have a USB keyboard attached to a Windows 8 box. Apart from that, let me know if you like it or not and whether it works for you or not. It comes with full source code and is distributed under the terms and conditions of GPL version 3. And it is digitally signed! Wow.
I almost forgot to tell: The name of the project is "So-Lazy". So google for the terms "so-lazy" and "windpad" and you should find it.

I didn't mean that it doesn't work with a USB keyboard attached to it. I just initially thought, that immediately after logging in, when metro appears, a press on the button should get me to the desktop, and I spent a lot of time trying to find out why that doesn't work. After a while, I decided to try the same thing with a USB keyboard attached and found out that right after login, a press of the windows button doesn't get you to the desktop as well, so even with an ordinary keyboard you first have to type Windows-D to get to the desktop. But from then on you can flip between desktop and metro with the windows-key (or the o-key).
Anyone running Windows 8 x86 on the Windpad 110W and willing to try? I have only tested on x64 so far.
    Stefan
Because the Windows key is actually not for toggling between "Metro" and "Desktop". It is for toggling between "Metro" and "Current screen". Before you do anything after login, the Metro is the only screen so nothing would happen by pressing the windows key

  • How can I stop the space bar from acting like the enter key?

I'm doing a little self-project where I enter the band's origin place in the grouping category so I can sort by where they are formed. However, every time I hit space to enter a band or singer's location, iTunes assumes I'm hitting enter, and automatically fills in with whatever previous option is at the top of the list of prior entries. This is really freaking annoying. Is there a way to disable this so I can have spaces in my descriptions without having to delete the extra pieces two or three times for each entry?

The current auto-complete behaviour when you press space is a bug. A workaround is to type say a leading X, then what you want to type, then remove the X.
Or if you hold down Shift as you Right-click > Get Info you get the old style Get Info dialog box which you may find easier to use until the bug gets fixed.

  • How the "enter" key in small keyboard works?

I create a string control and try to input a string ended with "enter". I can't use the "enter" key in small keyboard (right part of key board). Only the "enter" key in the main keyboard works. Why?

Another thing that helps to control this is the Tools>>Options setting
for swapping the behavior of the two keys. Also, a Shift modified big
return key acts like the small key in most situations.

  • Problem using the F10 key...

I'm reading Diana Weynand's Final Cut Express 4: Movie Making for Everyone, and in the sixth lesson, I'm being instructed to "...press F10 to drop the music clip in as an Overwrite edit." Straight-forward enough, right? Well, it has having no effect. It may have something to do with F10 also being the mute key, but I don't know how to get around that. Any help, please?

I encountered the same problem. I'm using a MacBookPro with external Apple keyboard and display and running OS 10.5.4. This is the way I solved the problem. Go to System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse>Keyboard. Place a check in the "Use all F1, F2, etc." box. Go to System Preferences>Exposé & Spaces>Exposé. Change keyboard shortcuts F10, F11, F12 to F1, F2, F3. My F9, F10, F11 now edit in Final Cut Express 4. To make them behave the way they did before, press the "fn" key + the F-key you need. Good luck.

  • Z30 STA100-5 Assistant "activate with Mute Key" with "use Assistant when locked" not working

When my phone is connected to bluetooth, the mute key should allow me to use the assistant even when the phone is locked.  The assistant works just fine on bluethooth when the phone is NOT locked but when the phone locks, the mute button does not function.
I use picture lock but this all seemed to work in previous versions.

May not help but give this a try on the G5:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
I would also first turn off both computers then connect the FW cable. If both computers have a FW800 port then you can use a standard FW800 cable. Boot the G5 into TDM. After the TDM screen appears boot the new computer normally.

  • Tour's Mute Key

My phone gave me a message that it was in standby mode, and to press the mute key to exit. Th picture of the Tour on p 11 of the manual shows a mute key on the upper right.  My phone has no such thing. What does it mean to press the Mute key?  I could not press phone/menu/mute in standby mode.

  • Unable to unlock with mute key

My device is Blackberry 9300 vs5.0.0.977.
Hi people, I am currently having a problem with my blackberry. All my convenience keys aren't working. They works like just like my keypad now. Pressing the play left track key gives me HL, pressing the mute key gives nm and pressing the play right track key gives me uo. pressing the left side key gives me jk and pressing the right side key gives me yi.
The default side convenience keys are camera and voice dialing.
The problem is after locking my keypad with default 'A' button, I am unable to unlock it. It prompts me to press the mute button, which doesn't work now. Each time I press the 'A' button, I can't unlock my phone anymore. I did many battery pulls, but upon pressing the 'A' button again, I can't unlock my phone again.
Please help me put my keys back to their original function. Thank you.

Try specifying RETURN instead of 'changeit' when asked the password for <aaaa>, and make sure that Tomcat knows the password of the keystore, however that's done - some configuration entry (don't ask me).

  • Something is setting the function keys, but I don't know what.

I recently installed Arch on a Lenovo T340s and I've been struggling with getting all the function keys to work. They all give out codes, but I can't seem to get them all to work with acpid. Those problems are a different topic/thread.
What's weird though is that some things are already set somewhere automatically and I'd like to figure out where.
For instance, there's a mute key which works both in X and in console. It's not set in /etc/acpi/handler.sh, neither have added any mapping for XF86AudioMute in Awesome, so it's not that either.
The suspend combination (Fn+F4) also works without any configuration and considering I could configure what happens upon suspend in systemd, I'd guess that it's configured somewhere there, but I'm not sure.
Same thing for wireless toggle (Fn+F5).
The point of me asking is that I figured that it would be a good idea to configure all of these keys in the same place.

Some of these could be hardware toggles and/or run from BIOS.  The wireless definitely is - it willl not interact with your wireless management software, it simply toggles power to the transciever which can be seen with rfkill.
It's possible the mute key could also be a harware switch for the speakers - but I've never seen this done before.  The fact that it works in the console as well would support the suggestion that it is a hardware toggle, but I'm still skeptical.

  • P35 Neo Combo behaves as though the escape key is being held down

When I try to boot my computer, after it gives the initial few beeps it begins to emit a rapid clicking/beeping sound, which I recognize as the "keyboard buffer full" beep that you get when you hold down a key.  As the computer goes through its POST, it becomes apparent that the computer is acting like the escape key is held down.  This doesn't go away even after the OS comes up (I use Ubuntu Linux) and it prevents me from being able to use my computer.
I tried loading the default bios settings (which is hard when the BIOS keeps asking you if you want to discard changes and reboot the computer).  I have tried clearing the CMOS.  None of this has worked.
I have tested the motherboard with several known-working USB and PS/2 keyboards, and the behavior remains.
This happened once before, and I had to RMA the motherboard.  This is my work computer and I can't afford to wait 2 weeks for it to be fixed, especially if it's going to break again.  If anyone has any suggestions or has encountered this problem before, I would appreciate your help.

You are basing an opinion about a company from one board? All manufacturers, yes, even Intel, has sold a board that had to have an RMA.  Many times it's a user error rather than the board, but also it's boards that are defective. Basing an opinion based on the experience with one board is not a sound strategy.
False.  I've had a variety of bad experiences with MSI products.  Out of 4 MSI products I've bought and used over the past 2 years, all but 1 have needed repair or replacement.  The one good item is a video card.
Quote from: Frankenputer on 07-August-08, 02:58:21
In the USA, where I am, MSI MOBOs carry a 3 year warranty(as do VGAs)). So, your statement that your new board has a 3 year warranty which reads as implying that the MSI one does not is false.
    http://www.msicomputer.com/support/sup_genwar.asp
The MSI warranty only covers labor for up to 2 years.  The Intel warranty maintains the same terms for all 3 years.

Your statements after "I'm going to RMA this MSI unit" are unnecessary and bashing. There's no need to bash.
    It's not bashing, it's a fact.  It's not unnecessary, it's cautionary.
This motherboard has failed in this manner twice now.  This failure makes it totally unusable, and causes a severe disruption in my productivity.  As a software developer, I need my computer to work for more than 4 weeks at a time.  In addition, the network chipset failed a few weeks ago and I've been using a 3com card since.
The last time I RMAd this unit for this same error, it was returned in working order but with no indication of what had gone wrong.  MSI has arranged their company to discourage customer interaction on any meaningful level, so there's no way for me to find out from MSI what they did to fix my board so that I could conceivably avoid another 2-week RMA ordeal.
If you want a cheap motherboard for a non-critical application, MSI is probably fine.  For a mission-critical workstation, look elsewhere.

  • Mute key fails during startup

What is wrong with the Macbook mute key? I'm tired of waking up the rest of my house late at night or during classes or in the library. My Powerbook Pismo never embarassed me this way.
What is needed to get the key to function at startup as it should? What is Apple doing to fix this? If I revert to Panther would the mute key work?

I haven't seen this in any of the MacBook documentation or in Apple's FAQs for the MacBook. As such... I'm not sure how you can call it a "failure" or ask "What Apple is doing to fix this?". From what I can tell, there isn't anything to indicate that the MacBook should do this to start with. The new MacBooks and Pros are complete redesigns. If they've chosen to not include that feature, that doesn't indicate a problem. Perhaps in a future firmware update, they may decide to include it. I just don't want people to think there is something wrong with their MacBook when there isn't.

Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.
