Fn Function Key Issues

My FN key is sometimes turned off after booting allowing me to use the F1-12 keys without having to press the FN key, however sometimes it is turned on and pressing F keys does all the stuff represented by the symbols ontop of the F key and to access the traditional uses I must press FN. In more sober words they sometimes randomly switch after booting. How can I control and remap these keys and stuff?
Also arch forums search is terrible

What kind of computer is this?  Is there a setting in the bios for toggling the function keys?  Is it a mac(book)?  If so, did you read the wiki articles about that?
Do you want to fix this issue of inconsistency, or do you want to remap keys "and stuff"?  If you want to remap keys, this can depend on what WM/DE you are using.  There are wiki articles on this as well.
I know that's a lot of questions, but we'll need more information to give you any suitable direction.

  • [Solved] Asus Zenbook Prime (UX31A-DB51) Function key issues

I recently purchased this machine, and the final issue I have with is that the Function keys are not working. Looking at the wiki I saw that it should work out of the box with 3.4.4-2, and I'm on 3.4.5-1 and have issues with it. Following the instructions on building a patched module led to kernel panics.
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi, I bought the UX32VD a few weeks ago. Most of the steps, mentioned in the article about the UX31A apply to the UX32VD too. I don't know what your problems are. All the steps are explained.
    [ 8.039202] asus_wmi: Can't find DSTS
Just patch the kernel with the mentioned fix, or use the dkms variant. This will fix the can't find DSTS issue. After that, the asus-nb-wmi (or sth. like that) module will be loaded successfully, which makes most of the function keys work (except the screen brightness keys). The only thing remaining is to use the supplied hackarounds to be able to change the screenbrightness.
After these steps, I created a .Xmodmap to remap the automatic kbd. backlight key and the touchpad disable key to XF86MonBrightnessDown (or so .. can't remember the exact name) and XF86MonBrightnessUp and respectively mapped the shortcuts with xfce4-keyboard-settings (XF86MonBrightnessDown to the command backlight down, XF86MonBrightnessUp to backlight up). Unfortunately, sometimes this is a little bit buggy. The scan codes change randomly on some reboots, eg: one time it gets recognized as XF86MonBrightnessUp, and a few keypresses later as something different.
Hope they fix this issue with the 3.5 kernel, and eventually get the actual screenbrightness buttons to work.

  • Keyboard function Key issues

So my Keyboard on my Macbook has had some issues over the past 6 months, so about 6 months ago it started muting the sound on my computer when I pressed certain keys like : enter, esc, P, /, \, 0 or ) and a few others, to fix it though i need to hold down the mute button stops the other keys from muting my sound so I just keep a weight on it, since I'm a student and have barely any money. but lately after I finally updated my OS to maverick I found the Function keys option and clicked it, on, now it uses that App Expose function instead, so i can literally swap between muting and app expose. I've generally lived with it up until this point but I think I need to get it fixed, I doubt it is something i can fix at home but I just want to know what is happening before I spend my precious little money.

Sorry I left some stuff out. My keyboard has 2 sets of functions so when I UnCheck the Use 'F1, F2 etc keys as standard function keys' it switches to the Mute function on the F10 key, the decrease volume key on F11, etc so when it is on this certain keys will trigger the mute function without me actually pressing the mute key. Where as when I switch the 'F1, F2 etc keys as standard function keys' on those same keys that triggered mute now trigger         "app expose" function, so it doesn't help, also i didn't want to go into excruciating detail last time but some other keys either don't work like the mute key or the increase volume key and other keys do other keys functions. so in summary I probably should get the keyboard replaced but how long does that take? and how much does it cost

  • Function keys issue on a Satellite A100-049

Hello, I am new to this forum so please bear with me if I am in error.
I have just bought a Satellite A100-049 and inadvertently pressed the F10 key. The LED below the key illuminated and I discovered to my horror that I could not type certain letters and, worse, I could not turn off F10, whatever that is! I eventually had to restart.
I can see what F1 to F9 do from the drop down list at the top of the screen, but I cannot work out what F10, F11 and F12 do, and am in constant fear of pressing them again! The handbook and Toshiba web site don't seem to offer any help, although it is probably because I don't know where to look.
Can any of you kind experts out there fill me in?
    Many thanks,
    John

Thank you for that. You are quite right.
I have just downloaded the handbook for this model. I didn't earlier because I thought it would be just the same as the handbook supplied with the computer, but it isn't; it contains much more information, including the answer to my question.
Funny, though, that the F10 function would not turn off (by pressing Fn + F10).
    Anyway, thanks for your response.
    John

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

  • [SOLVED] Function Keys Problem On Dell Inspiron N5010

Yesterday I bought a new laptop (Dell Inspiron N5010) and immediately installed Arch Linux on it. But when I launched the installation framework, I needed to use fdisk to partition my drive manually and to open another tty, ctrl + alt + f2 or up to f7, none of them worked. When I use f4 or f5 for example, it changes the brightness of the screen cause these keys have icons on them which represent the brightness control. So I quitted, took care of that fdisk issue and got back, installed Arch Linux successfully. When launched in GNOME 3, nothing was changed. It still uses f1, f2, ... and so on as "just function keys" without using "Fn" key. It's fine somehow cause my system automatically detected those keys, I can use every single function of my keyboard. But without using Fn key, I can't actually use any fx key for my own use. For example, I can't use Tilda anymore cause when I use only f1, it tries to open monitor control stuff.
    So... any ideas?
Edit: It seems that this problem is all about Arch Linux. A friend of mine has the same laptop and he has just tried Mint Debian RC and function keys worked properly. So, there's a problem and it seems it's related to Arch Linux (or maybe Xorg version, somehow?).

xdunlapx wrote:The function key on my dell laptop was set to the F keys, meaning you have to hit the function key and then an F key to activate the F key. I switched it in the bios so I don't have to hit the function key to activate the F keys. So I would have had to hit Fn+Ctrl-Alt-F1 for example to get to TTY 1. Now since i switched it off in the bios All I have to do is hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to the terminal. But in order to turn off wifi from the F key (for example) I have to hit Fn+F2. It's switched.
I can't tell you how this was helpful. I've never noticed that there was an option in BIOS's Advanced menu for this. I updated it as "Function Key" and it solved my problem, thanks.

  • X1 Carbon 2014 Function keys not working in windows7

    Hello.
I have a brand new X1 carbon(model: 20A7-005KMD) that was installed with our company image, running windows 7.
Alle drivers in device manager has been installed, and system update is updated.
The carbon has the "touch" function keys and they only partly work.
When booting the computer i can swap between the different functions, but when i get into windows, its is "stuck" with only the options F1-F12. The F keys work, but i cant change settings by pressing the FN key on the left side og the touch display, and get sounds/brightness settings etc.
as said, this works just fine during the boot.
Any ideas what can be causing this and even more important - a fix?

    Hi Guys,
We are currently having the same issue on the X1 Carbon 20A7 models (20A7000LAU). In BIOS or during boot the function changing works without issue (limited to two (2) function screens how-ever), it stops working once you log in. If you then lock the computer you can change the functions, but then once you unlock the device, it stops working.
When the drivers are installed and the device is restart we get the above behaviour, if we uninstall the drivers the function keys will function as expected till the device is restarted. This is very strange behaviour.
On a device received by Lenovo there are 4 function changes/screens in total, we can only make two work temporarily as listed above. We have tried the following.
    1. MDT 2013 Delivered Windows 8.1 x64 image image. All drivers/software components installed from the lenovo website. We receive above issue and cannot resolve by uninstall/reinstalling.
    2. Vanilla Windows 8.1 ENT x64 image installed from Microsoft Volume Licensing portal, installed all drivers supplied from the Lenovo Website. The same behaviour is seen as above and is reproducable.
    3. We have als compared all drivers/software installed on the factory supplied model to a manually built device, still the above behaviour is witnessed.
    4. We have manually exported drivers from the X1 Carbon device from lenovo and injected them into the vanilla Windows 8.1 ENT or PRO newly imaged device, still the same behaviour above.
Please let me know what I'm missing, I'm certain this is a bug in the drivers for this model.
    Regards,
    Nic

  • "Undefined Function Key. Press Ctrl+F1..." Porting app from 6i to 10G

I am running into a problem porting my application from Oracle Forms 6i to 10G. When I am querying a record based on a field that is not the first on the screen, I get an "Undefined Function Key. Press Ctrl+F1 for list of valid keys." error. I do not get the error using the same function keys from the first field on the screen. I also do not get the error if I click into another field (besides the one I an querying) before hitting my execute query key.
I did some research, and found a fix that seems to work. I can add a WHEN_MOUSE_CLICKED trigger to the form and put in the following:
    Go_Item(:System.Mouse_Item);
That seems to fix the issue. My problem is that I have close to 400 forms to upgrade. I would like to avoid adding this manually to every single form. I have looked into libraries, but I can't seem to figure out how to replicate a WHEN_MOUSE_CLICKED trigger using procedures. I was wondering if there was a way to use the Forms upgrade utility to add this trigger to every form it converts. Does anyone know if that can be done?
Thanks in advance for your help with this.

I'm not sure this solves the problem. This would call the trigger, but the trigger does not currently exist. I would still have to manually create the trigger in all 400 (or so) forms. Is there a way to add it in a more global way?
    Thanks.

The supported Software in iPlanet's Portal Server is JDK/JRE 1.2.2_07 and JDK 1.2.2_09(in SP4). Starting with JDK1.3.1_01, applets are handled somewhat differently. Enable Java and look at the error messages in Java Console to find why the Netlet is not loading in JDK1.3.1_02. The issue might be with two JRE's or with your cache setting. Hope this helps you.

When I first installed it long ago, I recall there was a Boot Camp icon in the Windows tool bar, and the function keys could be used to change the volume, brightness, and keyboard backlight. Now, there isn't, and they don't.
I've run 'repair' from the Leopard DVD, but still the functionality hasn't returned. This is particularly irritating within a game because I can't even change the volume without quitting to desktop.
Note that the Boot Camp partition is also used by Parallels, just in case that's a factor. Other than that, I can't think what it was I might have done to have caused whatever Boot Camp installed to facilitate this functionality, be removed/disabled.
Any ideas how I can repair it without starting again from scratch?

I'm having similar issues with no real luck. The only 'solution' I've found is to manually start the KbdMgr.exe program each and everytime I turn on Windows. The program is in the Bootcamp folder, and I put a shortcut on my desktop.
KbdMgr is set to start with Windows, but it doesn't. I've even done a repair install of Windows, removed and reinstalled Bootcamp drivers with no success. I can't find an actual solution anywhere, just workarounds.

  • Tecra M10 - Stuck CTRL key issue -- perhaps to do with BIOS?

    Hello and thanks for reading.
I recently switched my Tecra M10 to Windows 7 (from XP) and it soon developed the dreaded "stuck CTRL key" issue. This causes the keyboard to behave as if the CTRL key is permanently depressed. Sometimes hitting a combination of keys, or bringing up the onscreen keyboard, temporarily solves the issue, but then it returns.
It seems to be an issue many people have, with no simple solution. I've looked at every thread about it I can find, and tried many things to do with drivers etc. without any success.
So firstly, if anyone knows a remedy that works for this particular machine, I would be very grateful to learn it!
Then, there are two things I've not yet done: update BIOS and disable pinch zoom.
I was looking at the following BIOS update:
    http://www.toshiba-asia.com/sg/support/drivers/details/25244
... which is version 3.00 and seems to be most recent. My own version is 1.90.
However version 3.00 is labelled "For PTMB0* ONLY". I don't know what this means or whether it applies to me. Can anyone help? Should I install this BIOS?
For the pinch zoom, I've been told that disabling it does sometimes cure the CTRL problem -- but I can't find any pinch zoom facility on the M10. I suspect it simply doesn't have one. Is that right?
Many thanks for any help you can give.

    Hi
    > I was looking at the following BIOS update. which is version 3.00 and seems to be most recent. My own version is 1.90.
There are different Tecra M10 models on the market.
Check the labels at the bottom of the unit. There you should find some numbers like for example PTMB0E-01K00LGR
The first 6 characters are important: for example PTMB0E
I assume your notebook belongs to European series.
In such case you should check the Toshiba EU driver page for possible BIOS update.
    http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
However, on Toshiba EU driver page you will find also the BIOS v3.0 for all European Tecra M10 units.
Anyway, back to the CTRL button issue: guess what, you should connect an external USB keyboard and should check how the CTRL button acts.
In case the USB keyboard would work properly, the CTRL button of internal keyboard is affected and you will need to replace the internal keyboard.
PS: it could be possible that the option "sticky keys" has been enabled. To disable this function, you have to press SHIFT button 5 times in the row.

  • Function keys do not work on new wireless keyboard

Hello....my good friend just bought a new iMac G5 2.1 spotlight model computer and has had troubles with his new wireless keyboard in that all 16 function keys do not work at all. Got any ideas or is it just a defective keyboard? He bought this at my recommendation so i am trying to make it all work smoothly for him. Would appreciate a quick response as he has now had this mac for 2 weeks and we cannot figure out the problem. Thanks in advance for any and all help

I have no issues using the Apple BT keyboard. All function keys that apply to the iPad work correctly; display brightness, iPod app control, etc.
Use the most recent version of iOS and also iTunes on your computer. Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo.
If that  does not work, then restore the iPad to it factory settings.

Sorry that driver didn't work. You can try this graphics driver and if that doesn't work, unfortunately, I won't be able to help you with that issue. This package provides the AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver and Catalyst Control Center for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. For notebooks with switchable graphics modes, this package includes drivers for both graphics processing units (GPUs). Switchable graphics enable users to switch between a power-saving graphics mode (normally used under battery power) and a high-performance graphics mode. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. File name: sp71253.exe As far as the Fn keys being 'flipped,' I have no idea what you mean by that, or what to do about it. Did you install the software that controls the funtion keys? This package contains the HP System Event Utility, which enables special function keys on supported notebook models to be programmed. For example, HP System Event Utility enables users to press the Fn+ESC keys to view system information. This software works with the supported operating systems. File name: sp71156.exe
