Fn key goes to desktop?

It's late (early?) and I'm confused. Bear with me.
My fn key takes me to my desktop but keeps my applications open (see picture below and ignore the clutter, it's been a long week)
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l216/AuntieEm2/Picture7.png
but now that I've just discovered how to use it to delete and use the function keys, I need it not to take me to my desktop (obviously.) The problem is, I can not figure out how to change this. I looked in system preferences and I can't figure out how to give the fn key its normal function back.
Can anyone understand/help?

In System Preferences, click the "expose and spaces" group. Click the Expose tab, if need be. Next to "show desktop" what button is there? If the "fn" key is assigned that spot, choose a different key.
If that doesn't fix things, let me know and we'll see what else we can tinker with.

Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos.  Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

  • My Left Command key shows the desktop and can't be used for other functions

My Left Command key shows the desktop when pressed in.
So if I try and copy (command + C) I end up staring at the desktop....This only happens with the left key. When checking System Preferences, none of the settings in keyboard preferences seems to be relevant. I have reset the keyboard setting to default, but it makes no difference. Also this only happens with my user, when changing user on same laptop I get the normal behaviour for the Left command key
I am using a Macbook Pro i7 (2011) Yosemite and am upto date with all software

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Tab key goes to IE Address Line

Using either Captivate 2 or 3 (it was happening in both), my
problem was with the Tab key going to the Address line in Internet
Explorer (rather than staying within the module as it should). The
problem seemed like it was inconsistent, but turns out there was a
trigger. After much trial and error I discovered that all tab
interactions that occured before I put in a Question Slide worked
just fine, but any that occured after the first instance of a
Question slide started going up to the address line. So, I am
either going to have to eliminate the question slides, or put them
at the end. I'm mostly posting this as an FYI to everyone (although
it may be common knowledge, I don't know...I certainly couldn't
find any reference to it, and Adobe themselves couldn't give a
solution), but I also wanted to ask if anyone has had this problem
and come up with a way to still use question slide s interspersed
within other slides that use the Tab key for interaction?

*NOTE: I found this workaround on the web and it worked for
    me
In all versions of Macromedia's Flash Player prior to version
7.0.14.0, once typing focus was established (by clicking on the
Flash movie), pressing the Tab key would move you between fields or
objects in the movie - maintaining focus in the movie itself. As of
version 7.0.14.0, the Flash Player switched to a behavior called
"seamless tabbing". In this version, pressing the Tab key moved the
focus right out of the movie and on to fields in the web page, the
    browser address bar, etc.
Needless to say, this has caused some difficulty to authors
using Flash (or RoboDemo) to create simulations where the learner
needs to tab. So, as of version 7.0.19.0 of the player, seamless
tabbing is now an html parameter. Here's the official scoop from
Adobe's release notes of that version of the player:
    Disabling seamless tabbing
This release of ActiveX Flash Player supports a new HTML
parameter called SeamlessTabbing. The default value is true; set
this parameter to false to disable "seamless tabbing", which allows
users to use the Tab key to move keyboard focus out of a Flash
movie and into the surrounding HTML (or the browser, if there is
nothing focusable in the HTML following the Flash movie). ActiveX
Flash Player has supported seamless tabbing since version 7.0.14.0.
Disabling seamless tabbing restores the tabbing behavior of Flash
Player 6, in which tabbing from the end of the tab order inside a
Flash movie wraps the focus back to the first focusable object in
the Flash movie. Here is an example of disabling seamless tabbing:
    <object ... >
    <param name="SeamlessTabbing" value="false">
    </object>
NOTE: In version 7.0.14.0 there is no way to disable seamless
tabbing. Meaning that your simulation might just never work with
this version. Fortunately it only took Adobe one 'sub-release' to
    realize and correct this problem.
So, if you're encountering this problem you'll want to:
Publish the project with html checked
Edit the HTML field for any media types which display Flash
movies (including flash output from other programs like RoboDemo)
    and
    Add the line
    <param name="SeamlessTabbing" value="false">
somewhere in between the <object... .../object>
    save the Html File.
I know this is a lot to take in, but it's really a simple
    fix.

  • Start the following program on RDP session goes to desktop

I had a single user doing this:
When setting the start the following program in a RDP client Connection, he goes to Desktop and don’t start anything.
With all other users, include the domain administrator he starts well. And more…
I clone the user in AD, and with the new user everything is OK.

    Hi Xelah,
According to the description , the first thing came into my mind is group policy .
Because there is an user configuration when you use "start the following program in a RDP connection" :
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770821.aspx
I would suggest you to move that user to a new OU then configure a new gp and link to the new OS to check the result .
    Best Regards,

  • LR4 upgrade license key works on Desktop but not Laptop?

    Hi,
I had a fully licensed copy of Lightroom 3 running on my desktop machine (iMac). Once LR4 was released, I downloaded LR4 on that machine to use on a "trial" basis while waiting on my boxed copy of LR4 (upgrade version). Once I get my boxed copy of LR4, I entered the upgrade key from the LR4 box into Lightroom, and (as expected), the software asked for my "previous version" key since what I entered was an upgrade key rather than a full key. I noticed that it pre-populated my LR3 key (I suppose since a licensed version of LR3 had been running on that machine previously). All was good - it took the key and enabled the software.
    So far so good.
Now, I just bought a new laptop (MacBook Pro). This machine has never had LR3 on it. I installed LR4 and started using it on a trial basis same as my desktop. Once I got my boxed copy of my LR4 upgrade, I enter the key from the LR4 box into Lightroom, and like on my desktop it asked for the key from my "previous version" of Lightroom. Same as before. Only this time the LR3 key was not pre-populated (I suppose since LR3 had never existed on this machine).
Now, the problem is that when I enter my LR3 key (in conjunction with my LR4 upgrade key) on my laptop, it does not take. There remains a big "X" to the right of my key as if the key is invalid. I have triple checked the value of the key (it is the Serial Number from my LR3 boxed copy) and it is correct, and it is the same one that worked on my desktop.
    Questions:
    - Anyone else know what could explain this?
    - Do I actually have to have an installed version of LR3 on my Laptop in order to use the upgrade key to enable LR4? Or should I just be able to have only LR4 installed, and enter both my LR3 (full) + LR4 (upgrade) license keys? Hopefully the latter..
    - Any other suggestions?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Please disregard.
It just worked all of a sudden (copying and pasting same S/N, so I don't know what changed...).

  • My screen goes from large to small in safari. also disappears than comes back. goes to desktop and then comes back.

I am having an issue when using safari. My screen goes from really large to normal. The screen also disappears and I get to the desktop with the small screens on top. Then I get the dock (I believe) with the calendar, time, weather, ect. Mouse goes crazy whether using the track thing or a regular mouse. Doesn't happen all the time but most of the time. Also the computer feels really hot to the touch.

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • When keying a green screen shot, the image being keyed goes a little out of focus when the effect is applied. How do you keep it sharp?

When keying a green screen shot, the primary image goes slightly out of focus when the effect is placed.  What am I doing wrong??

Make a letterbox in Photoshop -two black stripes and a hole in the middle, place it on a higher video track.

  • Mac Pro turns on and goes to desktop but won't do anything from there

    Hey guys,
I've had my Mac Pro for about 3 years now (fully updated) and have owned macs for about 20 years now and have never run into this issue. Hopefully you can help. I can turn my mac on and reach the login screen. I login and reach the desktop. From there weird things start happening.
    1. Safari won't load. My dock where the Safari button is goes into hiding the second I click on Safari. Nothing loads.
    2. If I go to my main drive and click on the Applications folder, the window disappears and I'm back looking at my desktop.
    3. If I try to open System Preferences it may come up and it may not. Depends on the time.
    4. iTunes will still open and work (although all my iTunes files are on a separate harddrive).
    5. If I try to Restart or Shutdown the computer won't. I have to manually shut it down by holding the power button.
    6. If I mess around with trying to open things long enough (Safari, Applications Folder, etc) the entire computer will lock up. I can still move the mouse around but it won't do anything.
I have booted the computer from the Install Disc and have run Disk Repair and have even repaired permissions and still nothing fixes this issue. Does anyone have any idea on what to do?

    Buy Disk Warrior.
    Clone your system with SuperDuper.
Install a clean set of the system (erase and install) and full updates.
    Gradaully test it out.
I would not use it as is.
Normally I would say, try a new "test" user account and see if the problem goes away (after you have a backup).
Your DVD is not 10.6.6, and Apple First Aid is not as thorough as say Disk Warrior, good start but not to do full reliable repairs.
Every hard shutdown etc just adds and corrupts the directory and file system.
You do have corrupt files, prefs and more.
I'm sure there is or ought to be some nice FAQs on system maintenance and repair for Macs.

  • Control key is showing Desktop - Help

Long story short - I have somehow mapped my 'Control' key to show my Desktop on my Macbook Air. I can't remember how I did this and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
I have already tried  System Preferences>Keyboard>Modifier Keys and Control says Control.
    I am running OS X 10.9.2.
    Any help is appreciated.

Did you ever find a solution to this? It is happening on my keyboard with left fn, control, and option keys, driving me crazy and preventing work on photoshop involving the use of these keys!!
I have checked all the suggestions on this forum with no results.

  • Apple Gray Startup screen changes color before going to desktop.

    Hey guys,
Since I upgraded my macbook air to lion last summer, the startup is a tad slower because the gray screen with the apple logo changes from a blu-ish gray to a yellow-gray before going to the desktop.  I do not have this problem on my iMac.  Anybody have any answers?
    Thanks so much!

I find this topic kinda funny. several answers and NONE of you guys mention that the spinning wheel is supposed to be there and completly normal, it appears on every mac and I'm 100% certain it appeared on your mac before as well.
the spinning wheel is supposed to be there, it's nothing to worry about it's the regular OS X boot up working indicator. it even appears on the new macbook airs with flash storage built in, where boot up takes about ... 8 seconds or something.

  • I've remapped the Function key to show desktop, can't undo.

As the title says, I remapped this key to the show desktop feature. Now when I want to use the function keys I have to use them blind as the windows disappear when I try to use it!
I've reset all keyboard shortcuts in Keyboard. I've made sure that "show desktop" under mission control is not set to function either.
    Any ideas?

  • T420s Keyboard- "L" key going soft

This morning I had trouble logging into my laptop, I figured out once I got on and tried to use a word processor that the L key is going south, I have to make harder keystrokes to get it to register.
I just got this unit a month ago. As far as I know, I couldn't have splashed water on it, the key had worked fine through several hours of early morning essay-writing before I ran into this problem about 4 and a half hours ago.
Is there a DIY solution or will I have to submit my computer for servicing?

I had to replace a T520 keyboard the day I got the laptop.
When I called support, they offered to send me a replacement keyboard... came the next day and I just replaced it myself. Online instructions are available or you can probably bring it in?

  • Registry key to change desktop icon size

By default Windows 7 has desktop icon view set to Medium. I want to change the default user NTuser.dat hive as part of SCCM build so that each new user has small size by default, but can change if they wish (hence can't do it as a GPO)
Does anyone know the registry key(s) to change?
    Ian Burnell, London (UK)

    Hi,
This view size is controlled by HKU specific user registry. Thus it can't be mapping to another user account.
If you insist, there is a complex workaround(However I wouldn't like to recommend you use this method):
Copy the following registry value to place another user's registry.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
Note: It can't be imported, just copy its value.
