Fn key not working at all (in 10.4.11 and XP)

Hello my fn key doesn't work at all, there is no difference whether I press it or not and with that none of my function keys e.g. for brightness or volume control work at all either.
I am on the latest software updates. Have VMWare installed for XP, but even there the fn button appears as it would not exist.
Also what's strange is that in OSX preferences in the Mouse and Keyboard section, there is no tab for my trackpad, even though it works fine. As there is no tab I can't e.g. set the feature for right clicking with the two fingers on the trackpad...
Is this a hardware issue or some strange software issue?

Should the multitouch etc. generally work with 10.4.11 or do I need 10.5.x for the Trackpad tab to show up in the preferences - Mouse & Keyboard section?

Satellite A500 fn keys not working at all after windows 7 upgrade

Hi everyone,
I'm using Satellite A500 which i just did the windows 7 upgrade (32 bit) yesterday, however, i can no longer use the FN key on the keyboard which i'd use it very often.

I'd some search on the forum, however, there're some similar issue, but they are not A500 model, so i m not sure it's reference.
yeah i did download and install the value added package, and restarted my flash cards, and i did change the setting of the flash card, at least now i can use it by moving my mouse to the top of the screen and they pop up. but yet, the FN key still not working at all.
i couldnt really find "common modules" or "hot key" to download, could anyone post the link here? if that would make my FN key work just like before?

HT1926 my itunes is not working at all, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled. I get to the point where is says it is starting up and a messages box pops up and says "Service Apple Mobile Device failed to start. Verifty that you have sufficient privileges

With Firefox 26, I also have at least 120 tabs opened when I start Firefox and I do not have the two critical bugs described below, therefore I do not believe that the number of tabs is the reason of the two critical bugs that are present in Firefox 27, 28, and 29.
---FIRST CRITICAL BUG:
When I open ANY web page and do File, "Save Page As", the window that is supposed to open to locate the folder where I want to save this web page does NOT open at all, even if I wait a long time to see if it opens.
Same problem happened with Firefox 27, 28, and now 29!! When I reverted back to Firefox 26, this problem did NOT happen anymore!
---SECOND CRITICAL BUG:
When I use Google Images, for instance entering model in the search field of Google Images and then pressing enter.
Then I select any picture, open to a new tab this selected picture, then open a new tab by selecting the option View for this picture. Then right-click the picture and select "Save Image As".

I have no idea if you will be able to reproduce these two critical BUGS but I can assure you that they are not present when I use Firefox 26 and they are present when I use Firefox 27, 28, and 29. More, be aware that I have at least 100 tabs opened but I also have this same number of tabs opened in Firefox 26 and yet I do not experience these two critical bugs when I have Firefox 26!
Once again, these two bugs touch at two vital, critical very basic functions of Firefox and therefore I will NOT be able to use any version above 26 if these two bugs are still present, as they are present in Firefox 27, 28, and now 29!!!

I am still reading it again to try to figure out exactly what the person did to make his problems be solved, as the post is not clear at all on what solved the problems!
In any case, all the suggestions proposed in this post do not work and I surely cannot do a system restore when it is obvious that the two bugs do not appear in Internet Explorer.

First, I sent an email to the author of PhotoME to inform him of the serious issues his addon caused with Firefox latest versions.
Now, for those of you who do not have the PhotoME addon and yet experience the same problem that I had and that I described above, I suggest the following strategy.
As PhotoME did cause these problems with Firefox latest versions, I am pretty covinved other addons probably might cause these problems too. Therefore, adopt the following method.
Test one addon at a time to see if this particular addon is behind your Firefox issues like the ones I had.
So, disable one addon only at a time. Then close your Firefox and restart it from scratch and see if you still have your Firefox problems. You must restart the Firefox browser from scratch. If you still have these Firefox problems, re-enable the disabled addon, restart your Firefox (again!) and repeat the same method for every single addon that you have.
Try to be selective by choosing first addons that are more likely to cause your Firefox problems such as not very well-known or not very popular addons (like it was the case for the PhotoME addon).
If this method works or if it does not work, report it on this web page so that others can be helped with your comments.
I hope this method will help you because I was really upset that I had these Firefox problems and I first thought it was the fault of Firefox, only to discover later that this PhotoME addon was the culprit and had caused me such upset.

Wireless Keyboard F Keys not working at all

Just got a new wireless keyboard. Love it other than none of the F keys work and I can't seem to figure out if it's something I need to change in Keyboard preferences or what? Volume, brightness, expose, playback, etc keys all are non-functional. Even if I press the Fn as well.. Also, while there is a dedicated "eject" key on the right, it's actually the F12 (also labeled volume) key that activates the eject icon on the screen. However, that doesn't eject the cd tray at all....
Total confusion, thanks in advance for any advice.

W540 - Windows 8 64bit - Fn-Keys not working

Dear Community
I have a brand new W540 with Windows 8.1 running. Some Fn-Keys are working, for example Fn+F2 for the volume. But I have some keys which are not working: Fn+F5 or Fn+F6 should change the LCD brightness.
Do you know why these keys are not working? All updates are applied (Lenovo and Windows)

Can you change brightness in the Power control panel?
1. from the start screen, type "Power Options"
2. click on Power Options
3. At the bottom of this window, should be a slider control to change the screen brightness. Is it there? Does it work?

No, I haven't learned anything more. It doesn't happen to me enough to warrant trying to swap it out for a new one, though I have discussed the possiblity with the folks I bought it from. They are not big-volume Apple sellers but I was the first to complain to them about this problem. Hasn't happened to me in over a month. Some people are convinced it's a problem with the phone, not the software and therefore not fixable, but I suspect there is more than one reason it can happen. I'm hoping my problem is cured, fingers crossed and all that. Good luck, glad my post helped you.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comeback again?
If this does not boring back a working volume control, and to rule out a software issue, set it up as new device, explained here:

If still no luck, you'll have to get it checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place.

Bootcamp "no bootable device" Option key not working

Ok recently rebuilt 2 older "Intel Core Duo" Mac Mini's with SSD drives. They work great and have been flying, however on one of them I wanted to setup BootCamp so that I could run Win7 Pro on it as well.
So here is what I did...
- When I first built the Mini's I used a bootable Firewire drive with Snow Leopard installed
- I had the drive divided into 2 partitions at first
- when I tried to install BootCamp error message kept telling me it needed only one part, so I finally made Primary OSX part one big part, then I was able to get BootCamp going
- I choose "I have Mac OSX Install disc" because "Download the Windows support software" would not work
- Next it created the BOOTCAMP part and told me to put Win OS disk in drive
- I put in an OEM Win 7 CD I borrowed from work, so I could see how it worked.
- When it rebooted, it Did not recognize CD and all screen said was choose Option 1 or 2, (neither option had any text, and the keyboard would not take any input)
- Tried numerous times to get back to OSX, used every boot option I could find online but none would work.. Also Mini would not give back CD for nothing
- Next I opened up Mini to get to CD, I had a friend that was able to get one out by opening up the actual dvd drive but I was trying to avoid that. So what I ended up doing was using a putty knife to keep CD from spinning on bootup. After about 10 to 15 seconds of the CD not spinning, it finally kicked it out for me. (YAY!!)
- New problem, now I have the "No Bootable Device - - Insert Boot Disk And Press Any Key"
- I have tried the following. Removing the drive and plugging in a Sata to USB cable so I can access it from other Mini
- I thought that if I deleted the BOOTCAMP part it would allow me to boot back to OSX, I tried renaming Part to what it was before, I have tried putting in a Formatted drive with no OS on it, I have tried installing the contents of a Win 7 OEM CD onto Formatted drive as a single FAT part.
Nothing Works, I am either stuck at the "No Bootable Device" screen, or if I turn on Firewire drive with Snow Leopard I get a blinking cursor that never shows any text.
At this point, I don't want BootCamp on that Mini anymore, I just want my working OSX, but I cant get anything to work and I'm afraid to stick a CD in the Mini for fear it wont give it back to me and I end up damaging it getting it out. I even created a CD with rEFIt on it, but after I formatted a totally different drive and the Mini is still expecting to finish what it start with BootCamp, it leads me to believe that there is some BIOS or data stored somewhere that is not on the harddrive. If so, could I pull the RAM, or push some sort of master Reset button some where?
I'm also thinking that I need a non mac USB keyboard, perhaps maybe there or know Aluminum Keyboard drives in the memory where the Mini is trying to finish the BootCamp install.
As a side note, I sure wish Apple would have designed the Mini to fail Safe not fail broken.

The Formatted test drive did not have Any OS on it. I just thought that since that was how I installed it originally, that it would work.
I put in SSD straight out of package, connected Firewire drive with SnowLeopard install, and it booted to it and asked me for to install to which drive, I choose SSD and it took off..
So what your saying is, do the same thing but hang SSD from broken Mini onto working Mini and boot up with same Firewire drive, and have it install OS back onto Broken SSD drive.
Assuming all of this works correctly, why would plugging it back into broken Mini work? Wont the Broken Mini still be looking for BootCamp to finish what it started? (just seems that way from what I've experienced so far)

[SOLVED] ASUS N56VZ FN+FX Keys not working

I got this new laptop some time ago. I had WIndows 8 running on it, but since I need linux for college I decided to install Arch on it. I removed windows and created a new GUID Partition Table on the Hard drive.
sda1 512M EFI Parition
sda2 250G Windows Parition (is not installed yet)
sda3 512M Boot
sda4 30G Root
sda6 8G Swap
sda5 <Rest of space> Home
I've installed Arch_x86-64, with rEFInd as bootloader. I have KDE Running on my machine, everything is working fine except for the FN+FX Keys:
FN+
F1 Sleep
F2 WIreless ON/OFF
F3 Keyboard lights intensity down
F4 Keyboard lights intensity up
F5 Screen brightness down
F6 Screen brightness up
F7 Screen brightness off
F8 Proyector toggle
F9 Touchpad ON\OFF
F10 Volume off
F11 Volume down
F12 Volume up
The only keys that works correctly are FN+F{1,2,7,10,11,12}, but some of the most important keys (keyboard lights, screen brigthess) are not working at all.
I need help fixing this, I hope there's a workaround or something.

Edit: Solved the problem following the steps shown in here. I also confirm that the solution provided there works very well on the Asus N56VZ.

Windows 7 Brightness and Function key not Working Properly

i have HP 15-af024AU APU Quad Core A8-7410 - (4 GB DDR3,1 TB HDD) Noteboook and it came with windows 8.1 preinstalled than i installed windows 7 ultimate.
i have problem in Display Brightness i am not able to change Brightness by function key or by manually from windows settings.
2. my Function key are not working properly . all key are fliped whiout holding function key it work as function key. 3. bluetooth is not working when i search for new device not able to find any available discouable bluetooth device. 4. wireless button software is not wokring in windows 7 i already updated my bios that available in drivers support and install alll drivers too properly so please give proper drivers for windows 7 for this product that works perfect.

Apple key not working

I have a microsoft wireless keyboard, and suddenly, my apple key is not working. All of the other keys on the keyboard work, so I am assuming that there is not a problem with the keyboard. I have tried resetting my keyboard shortcuts to default through system preferences, but no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Welcome to Discussions - have you tried using some compressed air to clean the keyboard, it might simply be something lodged under the key. You might also try removing and re-pairing the keyboard.
