Focal length missing from EXIF

I'm having this problem in version 3 and 4. I have a Canon 40D and all of my photos that I've editing in LR (not cropped) are missing the focal length in the EXIF data.
This does not happen with Canon DPP. LR will see the focal length in the library view, but when it's converted to JPG and then viewed in ZoomBrowser or whatever program that piece of data is missing.
Windows 7 SP1 x64, LR x64, "Minimized embded data" is unchecked as well.
Am I doing something wrong?

I can see what you noticed for a JPG exported from a CR2 originating from a 5D Mk II. BUT:
The focal length is present in the Exif tag, but Canon's ZoomBrowser or DPP will not show it. Try to use Windows Photo Viewer and check the properties, you'll see the focal length there (like in other programs like IrfanView, ExifTool, etc.). Even subject distance (which is no longer shown in LR3.6 or 4.0) is included in the JPEG's Exif.

  • OSB - Content length http header missing from business service out message

    Hi all,
I am having some diffuclty with a business service in OSB. I created the business service from the wsdl and created a regular proxy service that just routes to the business service. When i run the test console i get the below fault.
    <faultcode>soapenv:Server</faultcode>
    <faultstring>BEA-380000: Length Required</faultstring>
    <detail>
After some debugging i find that the content length http header is missing from the outbound message the business process creates and sends to the acutal web service which sends back the http 411 fault.
Does anyone know how to configure the message flow of my proxy service to ensure that the outbound message sent from the business service contains that content length http header or any suggestions on how to fix this issue will be appreciated.
    Thanks

Disable the "Use Chunked Streaming Mode" property in HTTP Transport Configuration of your business service. By default it remains enabled.

  • Copy GPS infos from exif to xmp

    Hello,
I would like to copy the gps coordinates from pictures from the exif data to the xmp data to read the information in indesign cs5. How does this could work?

  • Lens info excluded from EXIF after touching up

I recently noticed that all of my photos which are processed and saved through PSE9 have a stripped EXIF. The focal length is there, but lens model is not. SOOC photos retain this information. How do I change this? Are there save settings somewhere that I am missing that will retain ALL EXIF data when saving? Thanks!

Most Adobe-supplied lens profiles are for raw files only.  Since there are very few JPG lens profiles LR is probably just choosing the closest one it has which isn’t anywhere close to the right lens.
The reason raw and jpgs have separate lens profiles is because cameras apply lens corrections when they produce JPGs and it would be inappropriate for LR to apply a lens profile when the camera already has, so LR refrains.  If you are sure that your camera has not applied any corrections then you can hack a raw lens profile into a jpg lens profile by text-editing a copy of the .lcp file that comes with LR, and changing the raw designation from true to false inside the file for each profile segment, then move this edited copy to the users profile area.  You might also find the JPG version of the profile using the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader available via a search at adobe.com.

  • Smart Folders and Filtering based on Focal Length

Can we please be given the ability to create Smart Folders and be able to Filter images based on focal length?
Doing so based on Lens alone does not take into account that more and more people rely on zoom lenses. When you have 16-35, 27-70, 35-135 and 70-200 lenses, one could benefit from having the ability to search for images created in wide-angle, normal, zoom and tele-zoom ranges.
Providing this feature would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards, JML

Thanks Colin, I will try it.
Sounds like it may work - however bit awkward solution in otherwise ergonomic LR environment :-(
I really do not understand why this value is not among the filtering metadata when LR recognizes it and shows it on every corner. Especially considering the fact LR is supposed to be full WF solution and certain development settings cannot be effectively applied without selecting images only with certain focal length values.
The very last feature I am missing on this SW designed to cover entire WF (since LR1) is the distortion/perspective control and ability to apply corrections based on lens/focal length used.
b Does anyone have an idea if Adobe plans to eventually implement this feature?
I do not want to be forced to use DxO which always means interruption of the WF and inevitably generated new files on disk.

  • Feature Request - better croping, focus patterns, focal length selections?

Tool specific Keyboard shortcuts:  It would be helpful to have popup clues about keyboard shortcuts.  For example, when using the crop tool,  it is not obvious that typing an "X" will change the crop tool from a portrait to landscape mode or repeatedly pressing "O" will cycle through a number of grids.  (Thank you Matt!)
Crop at other than "Fit" setting:  Other crop tool request - allow crop to work on image at settings other than "fit"  I may be able to get a more accurate crop at 1:2, etc.  Otherwise I have to crop an image roughly, make a virtual copy and then crop again.  Is there a better way to do this?
Show Focus Points on request:  If you shoot wildlife with a long lens, a slight error in focus can ruin the shot.  I review my bad shots to determine patterns of error in focusing.  It would be helpful to see the focus points that were used in Lightroom, (e.g. killer whales move differently than an egret....)  I assume this is stored in the metadata.  I'd love to be able to do this in Lightroom.
Add Focal Length to filterable metadata fields:  It would help to be able to see the various focal lengths used during a shoot, just like you can look at apertures (i.e.  select folder for shoot, turn on filters, select aperture in the metadata and wallah!  you can see the distribution of apertures used during a shoot.)  This reminds you to mix it up and/or helps with lens selection.  Is there a way to do this now?
My apologies if these features are available and I just haven't found them yet.
    -TAB, a lightroom fan
P.S. Thank you for the wonderful new features.  I can't wait to convert my existing catalogs.  I love the new import dialog.  Now I can organize my backup copy in a logical fashion.  When I'm in the field on a multi-day shoot, I don't want to risk reorganizing the backup.  Now I don't need to.  Enough has been said about noise reduction and better rendition.  Thank you!!!

There is a corresponding idea at the feedback forum: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/add_image_direction_in_map_module
Anyone who wants this feature should also vote over there...
    BTW: +1
Edit: P.S. I think it is generally a better idea to post feature wishes in the feedback forum (or comment on existing ones there) because it's regularly monitored by Adobe employees, while that is not necessarily the case for the user-to-user-forum here.

  • PPro CS4 - half of audio is missing from exported files

    Hi all.
I'm currently working on a project in PPro CS4, and by that I mean that I've already completed the project. It was exported and uploaded to youtube for my boss, no problems. Then he asked me to combine the two videos, so I copied the second half of the video and pasted it onto the first half's sequence. The settings I used for the two sequences were the same. When I play the video in PPro everything works fine. When I export the video, however, the audio is missing from the second half of the video (the half I copied). The second half audio is on the same track as the first half of the audio, so the audio levels on the exported video should be exactly the same.
I've been browsing the forums and looking at troubleshooting pages but I still haven't found a solution to the problem. The video is intact; only the second half of the audio is missing. I have no idea why it's doing this or how to fix it.
    I'd appreciate any input.
    -RD

Yes, if he is exporting one file of video and audio then either the entire track is exported
or only the work area bar is exported for both video and audio. If he is exporting video and audio separately THEN they might be different lengths.
You might right-click the audio for the second section and select Audio to see if it is muted.
Try exporting the audio alone without video, listen to the audio in Windows Medica player and listen if all or only half of it exported. If all of it exported, then that narrows the problem.
You might try creating a new Sequence and pasting the video and audio into the new Sequence (don't just duplicate the sequence, that may just duplicate the problem). Then export and see if that circumvented the problem.
What format are you exporting to?

  • IPhoto 6.0.5  Get info regards focal length of picture taken???

When I display a photo and want info on that photo I go to Photos, get info and focal length. A small number 7.19 mm seems to refer to a wide angle view while a larger number 28.81 mm refers to a telephoto view I think. If this is true what is the multipler that gives me the numbers that apply to a non-digital camera. 35 mm and 200 mm make more sense to me than 7.19 or 28.81 mm. If the numbers do not refer to this what do they mean and where can I find the 35, 200, 400mm numbers. Well, stupid me, just plugged some #s into the calculator and it appears that a 4.86 multipler works out to be 35 and 140 mm the G5's focal length. Now another question instead. Can I change in preferences somewhere a setting that will make that calculation and display the 35mm, 140mm numbers instead?

    ef1:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No, the information is added to the image file by the camera and iPhoto just reads it. There's no way to recode iPhoto to add the multiplier. Just the nature of the beast. If you wanted to edit each file individually to change the number to reflect the value you want. There's an application that will let you edit those fields. It's called Reveal.
Otherwise, create a jpg with a table of converted focal lengths and include it in iPhoto for quick reference.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar

  • Library Filter: Metadata Browser: Add Focal Length

Please add Focal length as an available Meta data to browse in the Library Filter.
    Purpose:
I'm currently considering to buy a new zoom lens. To determine the best zoom range for the lens, I like to see which focal length I use most often by profiling my existing images.
The information is already available in the images exif data, it only needs to be exposed in the Lib Filter.

  • How to shoot fixed focal length lenses?

    Hi,
I wonder how I am supposed to best shoot fixed focal length lenses.
Currently I just shoot one set of 9 images, just because it is a fixed focal length lens and if I want it to be good, I shoot the same set again with different apertures.
But the documentation says: "For prime lenses, shoot at (1 × minimum focus distance) and (5 × minimum  focus distance) focus distance positions with a fixed f/11 aperture."
My problem here is to understand how I am supposed to shoot with different focus distances while using a fixed focal length lens?
As far as I have understood until now, I have to put the test chart fully on the picture so it fills something about 1/2 to 1/3 of the picture, leaving room everywhere. I also input the type of chart I used in the software.
If I do this, then moving the camera to say 5 times the first distance makes the second set of picture agaisnt the rules since obviously the test chart will show only much to small.
If I do it the other way around (first 5x then 1x min) then the second set will only show fractions of the chart.
As added difficulty I wonder how to handle macro lenses... the minimum focus distance there usually allows for a 1:1 magnification. That would either require a test chart total size (!) of less than 1/2 an inch (fun printing) or you would only get to see a fraction of a test-chart-square.
So how do I do it?

No, I am not confunsing these terms. I thought of it exactly as you described, but that seems not in sync with reality or guidance given - for the following reasons:
    1. I do actually own a 35mm macro lens with minimal focus distance which I want to create a profile for. Minimum focus distance is 13cm with magnification 1:1. The latter means that the picture is completely filled by any object that is as big as the sensor. --> The full test chart needs to be less than 2cm small.
In that regard your example of a 400mm lens is the easy thing because of the 12 feet distance. Anything is easy to shoot from 4m aways as you can use normal charts.
    2. As I described the guide says that the chart should fill about 50% of the picture and you should use one chart. Even in your example obviously the size of the chart on the picture will vary in a real big way if you shoot the same chart with a 400mm lens from 12 feet and from 60 feet. I just wonder if that is what is correct or one should choose a different chart for each distance (I dont believe that).

  • Getting images w/ different zoom/focal lengths to match up?

Hi! I recently shot some star trails the other day with a 20 second shutter speed. i ended up with around 150 pictures but when i went to blend them, the trails didn't match up! i later discovered that when i went outside to clean off the lens (which was every 10 mins) that i accidentally zoomed in a little each time i cleaned it (ranging from 11mm to 13.6mm). I put all the images into photoshop and blended the ones that were shot with the same focal length (i ended up with 5 layers)I was wondering if there was a way/feature or if you guys knew any tips or tricks that would crop the image and line it up to match the other trails for me automatically or help me crop the images to the right size. Thank you and any help is much appreciated!! (:

Do your images have any easily identifiable landmarks in the foreground - buildings, trees, etc.? If so, you could use the Measure tool, and figure the necessary scaling from there.

  • Missing/Corrupt EXIF Data

I was looking at a folder of images today, and noticed that the camera data was not showing up and the images looked out of focus. Moments later the camera data showed up but the images still looked blurry (thumbs). Suddenly all the thumbs in the folder disappeared, being replaced by the .nef icon. I mean instantly, they all changed to the icon. I tried to open but got the message:
"Could not complete the request because it is not the right kind of document. "
So I tried to open it using DXO and it returned :
"This image cannot be processed since its EXIF data cannot be read or is missing".
Right click the image and the File Info is missing from the menu.
How does this happen? I have opened these images in the past. I can imagine the instant insanity should all my .nef's suddenly do this!
I am using Bridge running Photoshop CC on Win 7 64 bit. The .xmp data exists according to Win Explorer. There is no Bridge cache showing for the folder in Win explorer.
I am unsure as to whether this belongs here or in Bridge or???

I don’t think WFW would know about any outsider accessing the file on dropbox since it runs on your local computer.  If this is the first time you’ve used dropbox, it may have been asking for permission for dropbox to access your local system via the public network (there are local, domain and public tiers in the firewall rules) since dropbox synchronizes things between computers via the data stored in the dropbox cloud storage.
In other words, I downloaded the file to my local computer using the public link you provided, and wasn’t logged in as you, so would have been accessing the dropbox cloud for retrieve the file but not be logged in as you, but I don’t think the WFW would know I was doing anything for that interaction because that is between me and the cloud, not something on your local computer.  Depending on how you answered the WFW question, you may have blocked dropbox from doing its normal things.  You can get into the WFW configuration in Admin Tools (or maybe Control Panel) and enable things for a particular program that you may have disabled by mistake.
Back to the corrupted file issue:  spot-check a few of the bad files on the backup, right-click Properties, and look at the Created Date and Modified Date, compared to the expected date the backup first would have copied them, to see if either indicates the date the zeros were written.  You might want to compare those dates on files that are ok, to see if there is some difference in pattern.  It is possible the backup software updates those dates to be what the source files dates are which might mask the backup-software's last-copy date, which is what you want.
If you can determine the date for the zeros and it is fairly recent, then the system event log might list something as having occurred.
If there haven't been any viruses, then I'd say it was a transient condition, either in the circuit-boards or cabling or the hard-drive media, itself.
Has the computer ever locked up so you had to turn the power off to get control back of the mouse?
You can test the hard-drive media for errors by chkdsk d: /r or chkdsk d: /b (or the gui-scandisk equivalents) to scan for data errors--iffy media problems.  Move any virtual-memory swapfile off that drive if you want to test it while the computer is running.  Maybe do a plain chkdsk, first, one where you don't fix problems and don't test the media, which would find problems indicated with zeros in the directory-structure, first.  And if you find any of those, disconnect your backup drive in case the "fixes" corrupt even more things and that gets replicated.
A chkdsk that fixes media problems will likely take several/many hours.

  • Focal length in Metadata panel

I notice that in the metadata (Info) panel one can see the focal length used and below that, a blank field for the 35mm focal length.  Is there any way to get Aperture to fill in that empty field with the 35mm equivalent to the lens's actual focal length?

Thanks for that.  I did as you suggested, but my current libary has only recent images all from one camera, which doesn't produce RAW fles, the Ricoh CX4.  I will go back to an earlier library where I have several cameras involved included two whose raw files are processed by Aperture, and i'll bet I'll see the 35mm equivalent.
Is there any way I can tell Aperture the formula for my CX4 lens such as that its minimum focal length of 4.9mm is equivalent to 28mm on a 35mm camera?
In any case, I am happy to know what you just told me, because I will be using Aperture to process images from two other cameras it does recognize. By 'recognize' I mean it will process their raw files.

  • Metadata Browser, sort by FOCAL LENGTH

I'd like to see the option to sort images by focal length, in addition to the by aperture, and by shutter speed.
    //Svien

In addition, please add the capability sort images in grid view by any meta data item recognized by LR, i.e.: camera model, camera serial number, etc.
In environments where LR is used to manage images from a variety of shooters and cameras it is extremely useful to be able to sort by meta data via the view:sort order dialog.
In a high speed workflow environment the work-around of filtering by date range and selecting meta data filters is not desirable.

  • Sort by focal length

    1. Metadata Browser: sort by focal length (using a cushioned range)
    2. Ability to filter based on focal length: i.e. with 3 criteria lens, focal length, aperture it would be super simple to paint in presets for removing natural vignetting.

    Ian,
The post in which I repeated your comment was not directed at you, the quote was used to re-iterate that it is accepted that the feature is currently not available, and that the search feature is very limited.
If you feel my post was directed at you, my apologies. If you reread the post, the only two times the word "you" was used was in the following way:
    >"If you build it, they will come..." well, "If the information is there, you should be able to search, filter, or create smart collections by it."
The comment should have started with "With all due respect to the LR team..." because I hate harping on a subject, with anyone. However, this thread was initiated on July 10, 2007 and covers an issue that deserves to have been addressed by now.
After all, LR is a database program designed with photographers in mind. All databases work in the same way:
    1. They provide a way to input/gather information
    2. They store the information in fields, and
    3. They allow you to obtain that information through reports, or other means, so you can use it constructively. LR gathers the focal length information separately from the lens information. Therefore, it should be easy to program it to allow you to filter/search/create collections on the information.
