Focus points issue

hi, just wandering why I the focus points are not shown even the focus points view option is selected. Even, the focus points are not shown on the metadata screen, which just shows the camera model, WB, type of file (in this case RAW), the lens and the pattern. Any ideas?

Tim,
You must have a Nikon or Olympus. The behavior you describe is consistent with these to makes based on images I have in my library. If autofocus is on, then the matrix icon does not appear. If a different focus matrix is chosen, then it does appear, and a focus point is chosen as you describe.
However, I own several Canon cameras, and the behavior is quite different. On my G-series point-and-shoot cameras, the icon is always present, and it shows one big focus spot in the center. I rarely, if ever, use manual focus, so I can't compare shots done without autofocus.
On my DSLRs, I get two types of behavior. On my 20D, I ALWAYS get a white matrix. The entire matrix always shows as thin white, and the actual focus point shows as thick white. I can only do autofocus (closest point), or spot focus (only one point).
On my 7D, the focusing is much more sophisticated. I can select one of several focus modes and groupings, like the Nikon cameras to which I'm comparing. Again, the entire matrix shows as thin white, but the focus points in the grouping I choose show as thin red, and the chosen focus spot(s) (by the camera) in that grouping, shows as thick red. If I have it turned on autofocus, I still see the entire matrix as thin red, but it shows me one or more of the focus spots. If I switch to Manual, I see one big thin red box in the center.
Based on both our observations, it appears the behavior is primarily dependent on the camera, and there is a fair amount of inconsistency within Aperture.

  • Focus points are clustered in the center causing constant "focus & recompose"

It would be helpful is there were some outer focus points, I am constantly focusing and recomposing. Not so much an  issue when handheld but a major obstacle when on a tripod.

First point: this is just a forum hosted by Canon, they don't actually read these posts with any intent on gathering user feedback.  The forum is mostly supported by Canon users.
As your post: while ‘more’ is always better, there has to be reasonable allowance for advancement of technology.  The 1Dx and 5D3 have a significantly larger portion of coverage compared to other Canon models.  And even the lower end models are slowly increasing in coverage.  While I have no doubt that Canon limits this technology somewhat to encourage higher-end sales, they still are no doubt evolving their AF technology.  I would prefer to have more coverage across the horizon of the image to cover moving objects, as is done in the 1Dx and 5D3, than the upper and lower parts where I rarely have my subject.  If it was simply an option of having more, then sure add them in, but I’d expect that these AF systems become increasingly more complex, and thus expensive, as they increase the number of sensor points.

  • Focus points Aperture 3.0.3 not correctly shown

    Hi,
When I press the Alt-F key-combination the focus points are shown in the image. But for some reason they are off. I took some pictures where I'm sure I used the center focuspoint, but in Aperture they show up as the far right focuspoint.
Is this a known issue ?
    Grtx,
    Remco

Remco - this is NOT an explanation or answer to your question (sorry), but I sometimes see the focus point highlighted in RED, other times it is highlighted in WHITE...I have 12 focus points in the VF and the display normally shows the correct one (as I remember), but as described, the selected point varies in color...I don't understand this and wonder if that part of the metadata handling is buggy...I've also noticed that sometimes metadata values are reported as scientific notation (2.3 x E*some value), other times as ordinal numbers (the correct way)..makes me suspicious of ALL of the metadata info presented.
Sorry I couldn't help but only corroborate and commiserate...maybe someone from Apple will see this and look into the problems.
    cheers,

  • Show focus point doesnt work

when i put on show focus points it does not show me(( what can i do it will be work??

Definatlely have the same issue.  When I import in iPhoto and go back to Aperture they're gone.  If I import in Aperture, they're there.
I would think this is just some exif data that iPhoto shouldn't touch?
So much for fully sharing libraries/functionality.

  • Show focus points not available

My pictures used to all have the option of showing the focus points in Aperture. I would click on the icon for focus points to toggle it on and off.
Starting last year the icon for the focus points is not even there under the Info tab (same camera and lenses). i just received a new camera body but same lenses.
Pictures still do not have the icon for Focus Points. Going to the menu and choosing "show focus points" does no good because the icon is not there (but the icon for jpeg/raw, metering, and wb are there). if i go to some old pictures the icon is there for the old pictures.
i re-downloaded the program, trashed the preference files, etc.
Camera- Canon 40D, Canon 7D mii. Lenses CAnon 17-55 f/2.8 and Canon 70-200 f/4, non IS.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I just checked one of my photos in Aperture for you..... it is the only reason I've kept aperture to be honest! Mine still works on my raw photo which is from a 5dmiii. I'm in the process tho of moving all my photos to external hard drives and only keeping current photos on laptop due to storage issues. I'm also switching to Bridge, ACR and PSCC. But when I open projects from Aperture off of hard drive I get a message that says I need to upgrade library and opens in Aperture. I don't want to be bound to Aperture anymore. What if I don't have Aperture on next Mac? So not how do I get my photos unhostaged? Sorry about rant.... just very frustrated if I have to go through some long drawn out process to get this straightened out.

  • Nikon D7000 NEFs and focus point reference

With the update to process the Nikon D7000 nefs, Apple has introduced a new bug. Now, when you show the focus point overlay, Aperture shows 51 points and not the 39 of this camera.

    Hi,
Not sure I see a question in there. If you feel there is a bug in Aperture you should contact Apple. You can do this through the feedback form *Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback*
As this is a user to user forum there isn't much anyone here can do for you regarding this issue.

  • TS2518 I have Aperture 3.1.2 running on os 10.6.8. Aperture does not show focus points on my Nikon D7100, nor does it recognize the RAW files. Will upgrading Aperture allow me to see the focus points and RAW files again? Also, do I need to upgrade my os f

I have aperture 3.1.2 running on os 10.6.8 mac book pro. Lost some features in aperature when I upgraded my camera (no longer shows focus points, does not recognize RAW files) Would like to upgrade to aperture 3.5, but do not want to loose any pictures in my extensive library. Do I have to upgrade one vesion at a time, or can I jump? I believe I also need to upgrade my os, but not sure which to do first?  Any help would be appreciated...

    1. Can I get Icloud without having to upgrade to OS Lion?
    Nope, you need 10.7.
    2. If I upgrade to OS Lion, does this automatically put me onto ICloud
No, you set that up yourself.
    3. I have three mobile me email addresses. One for myself, one for my wife and one I use for my business. What happens to these.
You can convert them to be used in iCloud.
    4. My wife and I also use mobile me to sync our calendars across an Ipad (original) and two Iphones (3Gs). Both Iphones and Ipad are still currently using IOS4, and I am reluctant to upgrade this to IOS 5 as I have heard some horror stories. If I fail to upgrade to IOS 5, will this create confusion with my Apple ID's. (There already is a lot of confusion with these- Apple appear to not have down their homework)
If you don't change the settings you have now, I'm sure it will stay working.  I believe Apple is phasing out MobileMe and you'd be forced to upgrade eventually.
    5. Will Icloud allow me to transfer my Icalendar across seamlessly? This is Ical 4.04 whic came with my Imac. Does this get upgraded if I update to Lion?
Yes, it will get upgraded.  I have my calendar on Lion and my iPhone 5.0.1 working seamlessly at the moment.  That doesn't mean you won't have problems because with new technology that can be expected.  Make sure you do a back up if you're worried about losing data.

  • Show focus points in lightroom

I have Canon DSLRs and the EXIF metadata clearly contains the focal points that the camera focused on (I can see it with Canon Digital Photo Profiessional)
I'd like to have the same view in Lightroom, i.e. Lightroom gives me a "viewfinder-like" overlay that shows the focal points which the camera was using.

That query shows no results (for me).

  • Problem with showing focus points in 3.5.1 & 10.9

I cannot always display the focus points either by using Option + F or View > Show Focus Points on my MBP, late 2012.
Prior to 3.5.1 & 10.9, either one of these commands would always display or remove, the focus points.
At times I can restore the focus point display by either closing and opening Aperture or by rebooting OS X.  Today, nothing restores this function.
Anyone else with this problem or hopefully know of a solution?
    Thanks,  Bill
FWIW Apple, where is Aperture 4??

    Clem
There is some data in Console.ap, the latest being about 45 minutes ago.  With a filter set for APERTURE there are several references to :
"12/3/13 2:53:02.038  Aperture[1324]: The function `CGContextClear' is obsolete and will be removed in an upcoming update. Unfortunately, this application, or a library it uses, is using this obsolete function, and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system performance."
and a 13 inch screen full of generally single items.  I do not know how to read / use this info.
After your message, I went to Aperture and used Option + F, View > Show Focus Points and moused over the small icon representing focal points in the upper right hand corner of the inspector with the info tab selected (just under the JPEG icon) several times but that did not generate any new data in Console.ap.
Hope this is what you were refering to.

  • Focus point grouping for 6D with firmware change possible?

Does anyone know if it is possible with a firmware update to create an option to use just the center 9 focus points?  This would make it similar to the 7D center group.  I think this would be useful for some action shots.  This might be one feature that may help me commit to Canon for my next camera.  I am currently looking to upgrade to fullframe, but Canon seems to have taken out one feature too many in the 6D and leaves me stuck in the middle.  I don't know whether to jump ship and  and hassle with selling my beautiful 70-200 II zoom and the rest of the gear.  As a consumer, I still like the option of a flash in certain bright background situations.  Thanks.

I'm afraid you'll have to go to 7D or 5DIII to get Zone Focus or Expansion Points such as you want to use. 6D doesn't have it and I really doubt it ever will... that would be a pretty radical change to try to do via firmware... might not even be possible. But, hey, I'm no expert on writing firmware and some people manage to do some interesting camera hacks (search for Magic Lantern, for example).
But frankly, I shoot subjects like you want to shoot with just a Single Point most of the time with my 7Ds. Before that I did pretty much the same with 50D, 30D, and 10D. It takes some practice, but is the best way to insure focus is right where you want it as consistently as possible. Some days I take a couple thousand images and, with 7D and it's very quick AF, typically 97 or 98 percent are correctly focused, and I figure most of the missed focus shots are my fault, not the camera's. I had a few more missed focus with 50D and earlier, but still managed upward of 90 percent most of the time (when I was in practice).
I only use the Zone and Expansion modes occasionally on 7D. Mostly when the subject is large or is against a plain or very distant background. Otherwise the camera still might choose to focus using the wrong point.
The 5D Mark II has a form of expansion points, but it's done with 6 "hidden" Assist Points that aren'tt shown in the viewfinder, are clustered right around the center point, and only work in AI Servo mode. It's sort of as if the entire Spot Metering circle is one bid AF point. Unfortunately, this only moderately helps the 5DII with AI Servo/moving subjects. Tracking moving subjects just isn't the 5DII's forté. Only three of it's AF points  are the "better" dual axis type (the visible center one and two of the hidden ones). The rest (8 visible and four more hidden ones) are single axis... some horizontal, some vertical. Heck, all nine of your 50D's AF points are dual axis type, so to some extent it has a better sports/action focus system than the 5DII. I'm not knocking the 5DII, it's a great camera for other things.... just not so much for sports/action shooting.
On 7D, 5DIII the difference between Zone Focus and Expansion is that in Zone any of the points or even multiple points can be the "starting point" for focusing. In other words, it's like one large focusing point that will pick up on whatever object covered by any of the points is closest (like a smaller version of All Points/Auto Selection). In Expansion you choose a single "starting point", but the camera can switch to using one of the adjacent points if you don't keep the starting point on the subject.
I'd recommend 7D... there are some other advantages to using a crop camera for sports, as well. It's sort of like having a "free" 1.6X teleconverter and, since a lot of sports photography is done with telephoto lenses, a cropper helps leverage your longer lenses for all they're worth. For example, I use a 300/4 IS on 7D a lot for sports, easily handheld. If I were using any of the full frame models, to fill the viewfinder the same way I'd have to get out the 500/4 iS and a solid tripod to put it on (or at least a monopod).
Yes, it's got higher frame rate, too... Though to be honest I try to avoid using it too much... 8fps fills up memory cards and hard drives fast... and can mean a lot more time spent sitting at a computer editing the results. I found 7D an excellent upgrade from 50D. The 7D has very fast AF, ideal for AI Servo work... It's got a discrete chip handling AF, much like the 1D series have. AFAIK, 6D and 5DIII don't have that.

  • Focus Points

Is there any way of aesthetically changing the points that display non-focus areas to a light grey instead of red. Or better yet increase the intensity of the points that are in focus.
    Have Ape

Well you should obviously see that the photo was recomposed, because you see the photo :-P
I'm thinking of the situation where you're importing older archived shots from several years ago - I've just recently finished importing shots dating back to 2001. I'm pretty certain there could easily be shots in which it might not be obvious that that you'e recomposed after setting the focus.
If the AF point is a selected point and is off in the sky but your subject is in focus, you could probably draw the conclusion.
Agreed - that would be an easy one to judge. But your landscape shot might be composed of the near foreground through to distant rolling hills - and little or no sky. So if the focus point appears in the middle, was the shot focussed on the the boulders 10' ahead to the left or the bushes 30' off to the right - or in the middle?
But what you're asking isn't really possible
I wasn't asking for it - I realised long ago the impossibility of dependably recording this info in every situation. I was merely pointing out that the possibility existed.

  • Focus points not showing for Nex 7 images in Aperture.

Whilst it's good that Aperture now supports my Nex 7, I've noticed that focus points don't show and the option in the metadata tab isn't even there with my Nex photos.  It's still available for other cameras though.  Anyone else with the same problem.  Or do I have to wait for another update.  Any comments welcome as it is a feature I use in post processing.
    Thanks

If you have a tool that lets you look at the EXIF data in the image file you could check to see if this is in facr true.
The entries you are looking for are the ones that start with AF, there are a few such as AF points in focus and AF points selected. There is also two AF entries that have a series of x and y positions. Those are the auto focus points. If there in there then Aperture should be abel to display them.
The EXIF tool I use is Exiftool. It's command line so thakes some getting use to but it is definitly worth having on your system.
