Focus Rails

I just purchased a canon MP-E 65mm macro lens, I have checked on line for different styles of focusing rails to many to choose from. I need some info on what would work best for me, I seem to like the Novoflex MFR # castel mini. I have a canon 60 D, and a canon T3I. Another subject is what would be a good Software to purchase for Focus stacking, once again lot's to choose from on line, and should I avoid the free downloads, ( Helicon Focus) and (Combine ZM News) are some that I have looked at, from the videos I have watched I need to learn how to do the stacking to obtain the best macro pictures. Need help on both matters. I have always trusted the replies and feedback, from the Canon Forum. Thanks to all.

I have a Hakuba (http://www.amazon.com/Hakuba-Magnesium-Macro-Slider/dp/B00004ZCTZ/ref=sr_1_8?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=139... and I have no complaints.  But that Novoflex you mentioned looks to be on a whole different level, so your needs might be different than mine.  Also, I've never used the Hakuba past about 2.5X - because I don't have the lens, not because it couldn't handle it - perhaps it wouldn't perform as well at that magnification.  It's sturdy and the control smooth enough for my use.
I do like having said to side adjustments (and up and down would be nice).  Not critical, but helps get your subject composed when at high magnifications.
I use Combine (though I think ZM is an older version).  It works great, but the only thing I have to compare it with is Photoshop, which can't handle big stacks on my system.  I like simple interfaces, I don't need a bunch of additional features, just stack photos into something I can edit in PS.
Edit: to add - I see no point in not trying the free software. If it doesn't work for you then go buy something like Zerene, but you have nothing to lose with trying the free stuff first.

  • Problem with focus stacking

    I am attempting focus stacking of micro images of flowers using Auto Align then Auto Blend. It appears as though the Auto Blend has trouble withedges in some cases and places a halo/fringe of up to 20 pixels around the edge. I have tried setting and unsetting seamless tones and colors with different, but dissapointing results.
    The areas in question are at various locations in the image, including the center. I shoot using a tripod and focusing rail to advance the camera/lens into the depth of the subject.
    This crop is from the center of the image.
    Any advice?
    Also, how many layers are optimal?
    Thanks much,
    Michael

    Hi Noel - Helicon created the same artifact... Hmmm. Here are the images I used to create the stack and the results (last image). Perhaps it has something to do with the similarities in tone and color since both PS and Helicon have the same problem. I would love to hear from someone knowledgeable about the algorithm used to execute this function in addition to other suggestions. -- Michael

  • Looking for a lens

    Looking for a lens that will take sharp flower, bug photography, but also sharp portrait pictures. Thank you!

    Incidentally, a true "macro" lens (1:1 image scale meaning image on the sensor is the same size as the object being photographed in real life) provides the best performance.
    There are other ways to do close-up photgraphy.
    You can use "close up diopters" -- these are filters that thread onto the front of your lens (like a jeweler's magnifying loupe).  They're much less expensive, but not as versatile and you may notice the image quality around the edges of the frame aren't quite as good.
    You can use "extension tubes".  These are hollow barrels (there is no glass in an extension tube) that are mounted between the camera and lens.  You attach the extension tube to the camera body (as if it were a lens) then you attach the lens to the extension tube.  They're not very expensive.  By moving the entire lens farther away from the sensor, the entire focus range of the lens is shifted closer (the lens can now focus on subjects much closer than it could previously manage focus -- but also can not focus all the way out to "infinity" when the extension tube is in use.
    When doing very close photography the depth of field gets extremely narrow.  If you lock focus, but then your body moves forward or backward -- even by just a few millimeters -- then you'll throw off the focus on your intended subject.  A tripod is a very handy at preventing that accidental shift.
    Since the depth of field is so very narrow, it may not be possible to capture some objects completely in focus from front to back.  Part of a flower may be sharp... but other areas quite out of focus.  To resolve this, you can take multiple images and manually shift the focus just a very tiny bit each time.  The set of images can be combined using "focus stacking" (Photoshop does this as part of the "photo merge" capability.)  There are stand-alone programs that do focus stacking as well.   You can also buy a device which mounts on the tripod called a "focus rail"... the camera is mounted on a short "track" ... perhaps 6" long.  The rail has a knob on it with index marks and allows you to carefully move the camera by precise distances for each exposure.

  • What camera to buy for taking close pictures of coins in mint state condition????

    hi
    what camera to buy for taking close pictures of coins in mint state condition????uncirculated coins ??

    The camera is not so much of an issue here as making sure that you get the right glass(lens) .
    Both Nikon and Canon have specialty lenses to allow Macro (1:1 or lifesize or greater magnification) images to be made.
    I would also recommend that you get a good tripod and focusing rails to mount your camera on as most macro photography is best done using manual focus and moving the camera.  This is due to the fact that macro lenses have a very shallow depth of field.
    If you don't want to go to this extreme, then at least get a small sturdy tripod and always use a remote shutter release.
    All of this is related to DSLR's.
    If you want to go the PnS route, then look for one that emphasizes its macro capability and again, use a tripod.  Again, the lens is the most important item here.
    Actually, no - lens is not the most important - coins are highly reflective and as a result VERY difficult to light properly - the lighting equipment is going to be the most important.
    Lens will be second most important - you can probably do fine for coin photography with one of the common pseudo-macro lenses that only do 1:2 and not 1:1.  However a true 1:1 macro lens will give you the most flexibility.
    Since the lighting equipment is the most important, the key here is going to be that the camera has support for an external flash.  This is guaranteed for an SLR but rare in P&S cameras.

  • How to get decent macro shots with my T3i + EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

    Can anyone here steer me to a good tutorial on getting decent macro shots with my T3i + EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens?  I'm pretty good at online searches, but all I seem to find are reviews and unboxings .  Even the manual I've found doesn't really give instructions re: macro, even though the lens itself says "MACRO 1.5m/4.9ft" right on it.
    Thanks so much in advance for any help!
    Deb

    To use the lens for close-up photography, zoom to the max focal length (e.g. 300mm) and run the focus to the minimum focus distance.  The minimimum focus distance is fairly close consider this is a 70-300mm zoom lens... but it isn't anywhere near as close as a true/dedicated macro lens. You can get even closer... there are two ways to do this. 1)  You can use a close-up diopter.  For that lens you'd want the Canon 500D close-up lens (specifically you want the version with 58mm diameter threads to attach to the front of the 70-300mm lens).  It's about $85.  This is a two element lens (which is much higher quality than any 3rd party close-up diopter).   2) You can use "extension tubes".  An extension tube is (believe or not) exactly what the name implies... it's a hollow tube... and it extends the distance between the lens and camera body.  You attach it to the camera (just like a lens) and then you attach the lens to the extension tube instead of the body.  This positions the lens farther away from the image plane inside the camera and, as a result, the entire focus range of the camerea is shifted nearer to the camera (closest focusing distance was 1.5 meters without an extension tube, but will drop to just 42 centimeters with the Canon 25mm extension tube attached.)  It not only allows the camea to focus at a closer distance, it also enlarges the size of the image.)   Extension tubes do not have any glass in them -- they are completely hollow.  The body of the tube does have electronic pins to pass signals through so that the camera body and lens will still be able to communicate.   The Canon 25mm extension tube is about $140.  Kenko is another popular brand (their tubes come as a "set" of three different lengths).   Whether using extension tubes or close-up diopters, Canon suggests that you should manually focus the lens.   When you get to very close focusing distance, the depth of field can become quite shallow.  So shallow that you may not get as much of your subject in focus as you want.  Hard-core macro photographers will use (a) a tripod (because after precisely focusing... if your body moves by even a few millimeters it can completely throw the subject out of focus).  So you do want to make sure you do not move (and the best way to do that is usually to use a stationary object to hold the camera -- like a tirpod.)   They may also use a technique called "focus stacking".  Focus stacking involves taking several pictures.  You take a shot, tweak the focus by just a few millimeters and take another shot, and keep repeating until you've got enough shots to stack the subject from front-to-back with all the different focus positions.  The images are then merged using computer software (Photoshop will do this, but there are third party products that are dedicated to focus-stacking as well.) I've done this by wrapping a piece of masking tape around the focus ring on my lens.  I then focus to the nearest focus point and use a marker to mark that point (on the tape).  Then I focus to the farthest focus point I care about and mark that spot on the tape as well.  Now I take a series of photos ... taking each, then slightly adjusting focus a tiny bit at a time, take another photo, and repeat until I've taken enough to get from the nearest to farther points I've marked on that tape. Harder core macro photographers will sometimes use something called a focus-rail.  This is a track which you mount to the tripod and then attach the camera to a carrier that rides on the "rail".  The rail has fine adjustments which allow you to move the camera with control.  It you run the rail back (farthest point), then focus your lens to the closet focusing point on your subject.  Instead of turning the focus ring on the lens... you use the knobs on the focus rail -- which physically moves the camera forward.

  • Are there any recent tutorials or information for integrating Adobe Flex with Ruby on Rails 4?

    I've combed and searched extensively and most of the documentation is anywhere from 4 to 7 years old.  A lot of it focuses on outdated gems or libraries.  I've even seen Rails 2.0 as a focus for a lot of this information.
    I would just like to know if anyone has any valid resources for the latest Adobe Flex integrating with a Rails 4.x application.  And, if so, where is this hidden information listed or located?
    Thanks.

  • Arch is currently not ideal as a Ruby on Rails server

    Hi all.  This is my first post.  I hope I am posting in the right place.  I have just started using Arch, and I love it!  I have used many server distros in the past, have real experience in production environments, and I'd love to use Arch for any servers I need in the future.
    There's a problem, though.  Best as I can tell, the only version of Ruby available on Arch right now is version 1.9.1.  While that's the latest stable, for certain reasons it is not the recommended version on which to run the popular web framework, Ruby on Rails, which I make my living developing in.  You can see that for yourself here:
    http://rubyonrails.org/download - "We recommend Ruby 1.8.7 for use with Rails."
    I'm sure this isn't the first time there have been popular versions of software despite there being later releases.  People are often slow to adapt in production environments.  However, I couldn't even find a ruby18 package, or anything like that.
    I'm not requesting years-old stability or anything absurd like that.  In general, I like having the newest software.  But in practice, it's sometimes prudent to prefer the next-to-newest software.
    In addition, the ruby package installs "rubygems", a separate package management system for Ruby analogous to CPAN in Perl.  The problem is, it installs an old version of rubygems, 1.3.1, which is so old it doesn't work.  The latest stable version of this is 1.3.7, and version 1.3.2 is required for Rails.  I was able to upgrade it using the special rubygems updater ("gem update --system") but I worry this will conflict with pacman, and it shouldn't be necessary.
    In short: please upgrade rubygems, and please provide a 1.8 version of the ruby package.
    All of the packages I'm discussing were based on the present pacman versions as of this post.  Thanks for your help and for the great distro!

    tomk wrote:heatdeath - you're not getting the point. If there is something you want from Arch that is not available in the official packages, you become part of the community and do it yourself. It may end up being just for you, or others may also find it useful and help you out, but either way you get what you want, and Arch gets the "community support which it does not have". There have been numerous examples of this over the years.
    I understand your point, but using the AUR dramatically diminishes the ease of use from the whole setup.  I have to manually download the PKGBUILD and any patch files, build it, install it, and then manually keep track of updates, manually delete the installed files (there is no uninstall) and then repeat the process.  While it's great that the AUR is there for specialized interests, it seems that things from the AUR should be incorporated into the official packages if they have enough support.  My problem is mainly in the selection of "official packages", and the deference to the AUR anything that doesn't meet the strict and dare I say impractical requirements for inclusion therein.  There needs to be more respect for widely-used earlier branches, and there needs to be respect for upstream packaging problems such as the rubygems one.  And I am here, in the community, voicing my opinion on this issue, but I cannot change the official packages or the philosophy by sheer force of individual will.  It's going to require that people consider what I have to say, and consider what Arch should be.
    Ruby 1.8, as with many other major releases, continued in its development and had point releases even after Ruby 1.9 came out.  Despite being official, these releases are not available via pacman.  It remains the dominant form of Ruby in use today, and probably will be for another year or so.
    Consider the release of MySQL 5.0.  Would you expect everyone to switch from 4.1 immediately to 5.0 once they released their first stable?  Or shouldn't it be possible to stay on the prior major version branch and make the conscious decision to switch?  At some point, the keyword "mysql" should switch to the newer branch, and the old one should be maintained as mysql4.1 for legacy support for a while; but this should be a while in, after the tide has turned in its favor.  I'm certain something like this is already the policy for the Linux kernel, for instance.  I'm just asking it also be applied to Ruby.
    Instead, I'm relegated as a minority interest to the AUR ghetto.  I think Rails and its philosophy has a lot in common with Arch Linux, and I've heard other Rails people speaking of it favorably.  They are both focused on ease of use.  They could be compatriots, and Arch could benefit from the friendship.  Both communities are often interested in using brand new software, when appropriate.  Rails is ruthless with its deprecation.  But the community for Arch Linux needs to decide whether it can be useful as a young, innovative new server distro for practical use, or whether it's beleaguered by the philosophy that "true" "critical" server distros use "stable" archaic software and sacrifice maintainability, bug fixes, new features, and simple pleasure in the process, and therefore Arch has no place amongst their anachronistic pantheon, doomed to dwell underground forever with Gentoo and the other thoughtful playthings.
    I was surprised to find myself being criticized for suggesting I would use Arch as a production server.  I think it has the chops, it just needs to commit to the purpose.  Don't be defeatist, there are a wide variety of possible production scenarios, many which use fresh new software; let server admins make the decision whether or not Arch is capable of the job.
    As for variations on upstream releases (such as fixing this rubygems version problem), I think the best solution is that pacman should have something that allows automatic building, installing, upgrading and uninstalling of community packages -- maybe even binary variants -- so that users can have the ease of use, but also realize they are using something that differs from the official upstream releases.  A convention to install in /opt or /usr/local/ would further the mental divide and diminish the risk.
    Please understand my criticism comes with respect, and a desire to use Arch.  I ache every time I check the replies, knowing I've likely offended people.  I apologize for the length of this post.  The truth is, if I can't use Arch as a production server, I don't see any point to it.  I am an outsider looking in, sharing my thoughts, and I don't expect they will be received warmly, but it would be great if they were.  However, so far the impression I get from this thread is that Arch has no interest in being a production server, sees it as a sideline, implausible interest in conflict with its theory.

  • Open and Close OnScreen Keyboard while focus gain on JTextField

    Hi
    I have a Jtextfield when ever I click on textfield I want to open OSK(On Screen Keyboard) of Windows 8 OS and windows 7.
    I tried in below mentioned way to open and close in focus listener focusGained() and focusLost() but it is not working. could some body do needful.
    Opening OSK:
    builder = new ProcessBuilder("cmd /c " + sysroot + " /System32/osk.exe");
    Closing Osk:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /f /im osk.exe");

    You need to start() the ProcessBuilder and you need to split the command like this:
    builder  = new ProcessBuilder("cmd", "/c", sysroot + " /System32/osk.exe");
    builder.start();
    And naturally you should wrap the call in a new Thread or use an ExecutorService to avoid EDT problems.

  • How do I get multiple mc to come to the front on focus

    I know it has something to do with swapDepths and/or
    getNextHighestDepth. I have tried both extensively for almost 2
    weeks. No success! I know I'm doing something wrong.
    I have a base movie clip (a Yahoo map using Flash API) that
    loads 18 separate clips (customSWFMarkers).
    Each of the 18 separately loaded clips is a button which,
    onRollOver, goes to Frame 2 and attaches new movie clip. The new
    movie clip contains a dynamic text field.
    This base movie clip works fine except onRollOver some of the
    18 separate mc overlap others. I need each one to appear on the top
    layer onRollOver.
    IMHO, the problem lies with the 18 separate loaded clips.
    Here is a sample of the movie clip in action. In this
    example, I have loaded only 5 of the 18 clips; the others have been
    commented out so they don't appear. Notice that markers 1 & 2
    and markers 3 & 4 should each move to the top on focus; but,
    they do not:
    http://www.fairfieldpromoswest.net/flash/
    Code in the loaded clip:
    On Frame 1:
    marker_btn.onRollOver = function() {
    _parent.x +=2;
    _parent.marker_btn.swapDepths(_root.x);
    gotoAndStop(2);
    marker_mc.attachMovie ("details","propertyCasaSF",50)
    stop();
    n.b. the instance name "propertyCasaSF" is different in each
    loaded clip
    On Frame 2:
    marker_mc.onRollOut = function() {
    marker_mc.unloadMovie();
    gotoAndStop(1);
    marker_mc.onRelease = function() {
    getURL("
    http://www.mydomain.com",
    target="_blank");
    gotoAndStop(1);
    stop();
    On Frame 1 of attached MC (i.e. "details" linked from
    library):
    init();
    function init() {
    descrip2.htmlText = "<snipped lenghty text>";
    descrip2.backgroundColor = 0xcccc99;
    descrip2.borderColor = 0x003366;
    descrip2.embedFonts = True;
    stop();

    Originally, I had _root instead of _parent; it wasn't working
    then either. I changed it because I thought it was seeing the base
    map MC as the root and not the MC that attaches a new MC (if that
    makes any sense at all).
    My thinking is that the base map MC is the parent of all of
    the 18 MCs. So that should be okay, right?

  • Popup - how to get the focus in a specific compent

    Hi,
    I am trying to get the focus of my pop-up in the second component.
    Use case: New button in the table shows a popup to get the input from the user. There is a Undo Edit link (top-left) to discard changes, on top of the pop-up so by default the focus goes to the top left. I have input text boxes under that. Onur,
    Oracle JDeveloper also has a technologies known a JClient that handles the binding for you. Not sure if your requirement is to handle table models yourself, but if it is for database data retrieval then JClient is more efficient.

    Hi All,
    I have a use case where the form will have a table and one of the columns will have inputtext and the other column will have outputtext. Once the user enters some data in inputtext and presses the down arrow, i am using autosubmit and valuechangelistener to call some method in bb which will show popup in the page. And after selecting some value from popup, i close the popup by setting the first row's outputtext with some data and wants to make the cursor focus to the next row's inputtext.
    Its working without PPR, but when we use PPR to set the outputtext component, its failing the focus is getting lost. Any ideas would be helpful.

    The idea is to test if the user pressed the key "ESC", "TAB" or "ENTER" when exiting from field "b". If so, and after testing the content of the field, i wanted to set the focus on that same field "b" to let the user proceed with the correction.
    I tried with the "xfa.event.commitKey" to see if the "ESC", "TAB" or "ENTER" keys where pressed while exiting the field. I then redirected the focus to different fields named "ESC", "TAB" and "ENTER" just to be sure that i was getting the correct keys.
    This feature works if i set the focus in a different field than the one i'm exiting.
    Then, i tried a different approach. On the exit event of the field, i placed the following code :
    app.setTimeOut("this.getField('form1[0].a[0].b[0]').setFocus()", 1000);
    This would do the same as the setFocus after a while.
    For what i could see, catching the events with the "xfa.event.commitKey" for the "ESC", "TAB" or "ENTER" key works alright. The problem is to set the focus to the current field ( the one where the exit event is being analyzed ). However, if i change the destination field to any other field on the form, all the scripts work.
    Following the structure that i have on top, it the exit event is being analyzed on field "b" and the "setFocus" or the "app.setTimeOut" scripts indicate field "b" as destination, it doesn't work.
    If i change the destination field to be "c", all the scripts work as expected. It seems like there is a problem with setting the focus on the field that i'm exiting from.
    Any ideas on this ???
    Thanks.

    Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
    I'm urgently trying to find a workaround, but nothing seems to work.
    The focus on the current field works in acrobat reader versions above 8.0, but in 8.0 it just doesn''t work...
    To reiterate:
    On the exit event of a textbox I need to display a validation message if a certain condition is met. I then need to refocus on the same textbox after the "ok" button is clicked in the validation warning.
    My setFocus code is correct, but it just doesn't work in 8.0.
    Thoughts?

  • Unable to set the Cursor focus on a particular field in OA Page

    Hi,
    I have a custom page with 3 controllers . Now when i delete a row from the Advance table, the focus of the cursor goes to the top of the page. My requirement is that, the focus should remain in the Advance table region itself.
    I tried to set the focus using the below code. It dosent work. Could there be an issue since iam using more than one controller for the page?
    OABodyBean bodyBean = (OABodyBean)pageContext.getRootWebBean();
    bodyBean.setInitialFocusId("item164"); // item164 is the messageTextInput field in the Advance table region.
    I tried to get the Initialfocus value after its set. The value shows as 'item164'. However , it doesnt focus on that item.
    Please help me out in fixing this issue.
    Thanks
    AG

    Hi,
    Thanks for the Info. Can you help me with this java script or if you can provide me any reference it would be hepful.
    Basically the focus has to stay in that particular AdvanceTable region where the row is deleted. Not required that the focus has to point to the next row after the delete.
    Thanks
    AG

  • MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI sound needs -5V; newest Antec 550W has no -5V rail

    I came within a whisker of ordering a non-returnable  3700 Venice, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo and an upgraded Power Supply, Antec's newest 550W PS the TP2-550 EPS12V ($117).  This has dual 2x24pin 12V 19A rails and is touted as the new V2.0 EPS12V/ATX12v compatible power supply for high performance SLI systems.  By accident I came across a page at MSI for this mobo
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mai...ail.php?UID=641
    At the end is this warning:  MSI Reminds You...
    • For this model, you must use a Power Supply which has a -5V pin supply. Also, the users manual which I downloaded on Pg 2-10 says the same thing
    The above Antec PS specs do not  show a -5V rail, nor does an Enermax 600W I looked at.  The V2.0 specs for ATX12v which added 2x24pin 12V rails dropped -5V rail from the spec and it appears MSI is not conforming to the spec (See Antec response at end) None of the web sites selling these PS & mobos contain any warning.  I vaguely recall from a forum a while back it may have something to do with the Soundblaster system in the mobo.
    http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=22551 (click specifications)
    Isn't this a major showstopper which is going to cause a lot of grief for those of us upgrading to SLI systems using this mobo and upgrading our PS to the newest & best power design?  We won't know the PS won't work until we build the system.

    Antec reply to me:
    >>>>Thanks for the link. Since MSI's website does state the motherboard needs the -5v, the True550EPS12V will not work with this motherboard. The Standard (http://enhanceusa.com/documents/atx12v_v2.01.pdf) has removed the use for the -5v rail and it is no longer needed. MSI has not manufactured that motherboard to the Standard. Finding an ATX12V v2.0 power supply with the -5v might be hard to find. You should contact MSI for a compatibility list of power supplys that were tested to work with the K8N SLI Platinum.

    Wow!!  syar2003 thanks for that post.  I've spend an hour going through it &  fasteddies links.  Now I are a power expert.  The dual rail argument is enough for me to go back to the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI with one of the single rail PS -5V units listed by fasteddie. The only question left now refers to computerpro3  recommendation on ultra power supplies for SLI
    >>I quite simply wouldn't dream of putting anything else in my machine. Keep in mind, this section is for 2x 6800 models, not the 6600's which most any good psu will handle (like Antec Neopower, ocz 520, etc). . Pc Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe SLI edition (refer to list)
    2. Zippy/Emacs 550-700w models
    3. OCZ 600w (personally I would get the pcp&c for the price, but it's been proven here, so I'll be fair...).
    These are really high end, expensive and only 3-4 choices. Since I'm getting one 6800GT and eventually another & possibly eventually a 4800 X2, I was hoping the OCZ 520W would do it but computerpro3 says Powermaster 520 isn't good enough for SLI.  I found that there is an OCZ 600W ATX12 dual rail which surprisingly has a -5V rail needed for K8N Neo4 SLI Soundblaster.  Will this meet computerpro3's preference for a high end PS for SLI systems even though I'm losing the 1 rail advantage.  Maybe the 600 Watts just overwhelms the 1 rail/2 rail question.
    Thanks again for the teriffic help

    Wondering what you settled on.  I got the Antec TP550 and it's flawless on the board.  I even have the older 20pin model which works perfectly (including sound).  If you really wanted what I would consider to be a top dog (pcpower and cooling), and find the -5v rail missing, all you have to do is place a phone order and request they add a -5v rail.  It's a minimal cost and a total solution for having everything.  Just my $0.02
