Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 or Motu Ultralite firewire audio interface

Hello one and all.
Newbie here so please bear with me as I realise this topic has been covered in lots of various ways before.
I work in a theatre and spend my time creating sound effects, soundscapes, editing pre recorded music and A/V work. I'm currently upgrading our pre, live & post production equipment.
You can see I've gone for the iMac 2.8GHz & i'm about to receive Logic Studio 8. I'm looking for a firewire audio interface as I want to link up a midi controller to it (Edirol pcr 300) and also connect to our Allen & Heath GL3300 mixing desk. I'd like to try to, "future proof" our options (i.e differing i/o options) as we never know what recording/playback needs are around the corner. I've tried to research audio I/O's as much as I can and I've ended up with a choice of 2, Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 or Motu Ultralite.
Any views, reviews or ideas greatfully received.
Thanks
P*

I've done installation work for theatres/theatre groups. Reliability is a nr. 1 priority. I suggest you take a hard look at the Metric Halo 2882.
I like my MOTU 828 mk2(it always works), but my experiences with the MOTU Traveler (will often go berserk if you inadvertently pull the FW plug) and the MOTU 896 HD haven't been very favorable. The 896HD will give you a full blast burst of noise whenever you switch it on. Not good in a theatre where the amps are normally left at full throttle. Also, I had a lot of failures/technical problems.
The 2882 is a bit more expensive, but worth every cent. And the technical support is second to none.

  • Sync issue with my Focusrite Saffire Pro 24

I am having the craziest issue with my relatively new Focusrite Saffire Pro 24.
Audio is cutting in and out, in iTunes, Logic, Safari-anywhere audio can be played. In logic I get a sync error message, and the guys at Focusrite said there were a bunch of sync errors in my log. Focusrite had me ship the interface to their repair center. They couldn't find anything wrong with it and shipped it back. I have continued to trouble shoot with Focusrite to no avail.
I have even gone as far as an archive and install of a totally different OS and am still having the issue. The interface works fine on my roommates CPU. I have tried everything, different cable, different versions of the driver(they even sent me a beta to try), different user, different outputs, updating everything, repaired permissions several times, tried it without any other devices connected, etc etc.
My built-in output works fine, my USB M-audio works fine.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be up?
    Macbook 2.4 core 2 duo
    4gb ram

    Thanks

    Hello Everyone,
My Saffire Pro 24 DSP connection keeps dropping out. The output is initially recognized in my sound preferences and then disappears. I'm using logic X and also listen to occasional music via Spotify or iTunes through the saffire sound output. I've already downloaded the latest version of Saffire MixControl and that doesn't help. This is Extremely frustrating.
    - I'm running it on a macbook pro OSX 10.8.5
    - I'm connecting with the 400/800 fire wire cable. Have not got the thunderbolt adapter. Not sure if that would make a difference.  I would think not.
What am I missing. Could it be a faulty firewire cable?  Would consider replacing but want to trouble shoot system before spending money on new cable.
I've also heard about DiceTool which solves firmware issues on OSX Mountain Lion. Could that be it?
    Please help me.
    Thanks

  • Quisiera saber si se puede utilizar Logic Pro con la interface Focusrite Saffire PRO 26

Quiero comprar una interface Focusrite Saffire PRO 26. Quisiera saber si es compatible con Logic PRO X
    Gracias

About a year ago I got a Mac pro with this reference, from an advertising agency. It was a series of computers that [they] were going to throw out, and a fellow already offered him one. From what I've read is the year 2006/2008.
The issue is that I have tried switching connecting to a screen but I do not get anything out. The furthest I've gotten has been to see me for a password that I have not connecting to my Mac Book Pro with a FireWire cable (my partner is no longer in the company and do not know the password but I read that you can reset all that).
I wonder if it's worth it to fix it or take it to look at it because if you could update it would be great to install Logic Pro to produce music.
    looking forward a reply.
    many Thanks
That SMC number is for the original Mac Pro 1,1 from 2006. It is worth about US$600 in working condition. Its technical Specs are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP30
If you hear the chime, that means it passed its Power-On Self Test, and it is working, but it could need a new Hard Drive.
It shipped with a 7300 graphics card, and many of those are dead by now. To use it, you would need to buy an Apple-firmware 5770 card, about US$250.
That machine can run Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7, but not higher.

  • Logic Express 8 and my new Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 audio interface

I recently purchased a new Firewire audio interface, the Saffire PRO 24 from Focusrite, and I'm having some trouble getting it to play nicely with Logic Express 8. Anyone else having difficulty with this?
There are a number of problems including: 1) I can't seem to use any sample rate besides 44.1 kHz. When I start-up Logic Express, the Saffire instantly reverts to 44.1kHz, no matter what the previous setting was. 2) Focusrite's control panel, "Mix Control," has buffer settings for recording/playback but so does LE 8; which one has priority over the other? 3) *My BIGGEST problem* is that, when recording, the Saffire seems to show a very different input level than LE 8 does, and this makes it very difficult to know how to set the gain to prevent clipping.
More details: I'm using the latest version of Focusrite's Mix Control software (2.2). There are no additional software updates for Logic Express 8. My Apple firewire driver is current. I'm using a brand new Firewire cable, 6-pin to 9-pin since my Macbook Pro has a 9-pin FW800 port.
I like this piece of hardware, and I know Focusrite makes some great equipment. Please let me know if I'm overlooking something here! Cheers.

I can't speak on the FOCUSRITE but I hope you will get what I'm saying in general about the recording process.
With Audio Interfaces (I have a fast track pro)the head phone jack will give you a clear indication for what the real sound is like coming through it unit. I try to keep the level low on the unit to prevent clipping by adjusting the volume on the Fast Track (FOCUSRITE). I have blinking LED's and it shows red when clipping... just like your unit (a little different, though). If you keep the level as high as you can without going to far to cause a red line, you'll be good in the recording process. From there you will adjust the volume once into LOGIC from either volume per track or via eq, compressors and such.
    I hope this helps.

  • Focusrite saffire pro 26i/o?

Hi. did anyone use a new focusrite saffire pro 26i/o? i am planing to buy a new audio hardware for my quad..does any 1 think it will be beeter sounding than the rme..or apogee(ensemble) if yes then y is it costing so low compare to apogee and even motu 896. i have focusrite twintrak and voice master pro and in both the anolog outs are much beeter than the digital outs..thats the worry..how will u guys rank thease interfaces for sound..apogee ensemble, focusrite saffire pro,rme,motus..and tascam 1804
would like to hear from you guys...

    Hi Amar
This is Rohit Pradhan , I am currently studing MA in Audio Production at University of Westminster , I used to work at Lakdawalas sound city and also use to freelance for small bands as a live soudn engineer in mumbai . good to see you on this forum and first of all Let me tell you one thing I showed Sarkar to my class as a Study subject on sound design and your work was very much appreciated than any thing else.
I work here at discovery channel mastering division as i am studing . Amar. i have seen and used the ensemble and it rocks i would certainly suggest you go for the ensemble its just stands out of the options which you are lookign at. the Sound is awesomely tranparent and you dont hear that 'Tinny' Mid n high freq emphasised sound which u normally hear out of these boxes.
the apogee convertors are really good as is the digital clock . ( we had it connected to the DM 2000 and it had a stable digital clock .
Please dont go for motu 896 has a lota problems with osx. The focusrite is a good option coz i am usign the saffire and i am happy with it.
Another good option if you r looking at good sound is a METRIC HALO 2882dsp
www.mhlabs.com. Its a rocking but very underated product many mastering engieneers recommend this particular sound card.
I guess i have anwered your queries if you need any further help do revert back . [email protected]

  • Playing DVDs in 5.1 With Firewire Audio Interface Connected for Logic Pro

I'm struggling to get an answer on this anywhere... I have Logic Pro running 5.1 Surround Mixes on a g5, using a Metric Halo Mobile IO Firewire audio interface - its 6 analog outs are connected to a M Audio LX4 powered surround system. It all works great - until... the problem is when I need to listen to DVDs with 5.1 soundtracks (for reference), or even HD trailers (with 5.1 soundtracks). With the Mobile IO selected as audio interface, DVDs only play in stereo. I think this is because the 5.1 soundtrack is only output thru the optical out - but connecting the optical out to the Mobile IO and selecting 'Digital out' on the g5 brings silence.. Im told this is because the MIO's optical in wont decode 5.1. I'm interested to hear from anyone with a Pro Audio interface - like a MOTU etc - who needs to switch between mixing their own music in 5.1 and then listening to DVDs in 5.1.. I cant be the first, surely?
Plantwebguy said he solved his issue with VLC. Do we know if VLC willl decode 5.1 and then output it to the Interface via Firewire? I've searched the net for a Pro Audio interface with (1) 6 analog outs & mic inputs etc (2) firewire connection and (3) optical in that reads AC3/5.1 etc (rather than just ADAT).... nada. Sorry to be long-winded but I cant get a solution anywhere..

  • Firewire audio interface comparison question

hello, i been comparing interfaces and have a few questions. some of them are 24bit/96khz and some are 24bit/192khz. im looking at 2 brands in my budget.
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-Firestudio-26x26-Firewire-Record ing-System?sku=241848
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Focusrite-Saffire-Pro-26-IO?sku=241135
because im new to recording im not sure i would even hear the difference between the 96khz and 192khz. big numbers looks better on paper but i could be wrong. im hoping someone may have compared these already and have info for me to guide my purchase. thanks for any help

They can take advantage of the higher sample rates
Can you hear a difference? I could probably find a dozen web pages that say it's possible and another that say it's not.
I would use the highest sample rate I could, but I would not base a buying decision on 96k vs. 192k unless the other features I were interested were identical.
Recording, Mixing, and Mastering technique can trump hardware.
    As an example, go here:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/BBPages/History/History.html
and listen to the Real World sample, and then the Shine sample. One was recorded with a $30 interface, the other with an (at the time) $800 interface.

  • Can't play / record sound on Yosemite with external Firewire audio interface

I've got a Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 Firewire audio device. It worked perfectly until I upgraded to Yosemite. Even upgrading the driver to the last version (which suports Yosemite) I can't play sound in any way. Garageband crashes when I try to play my projects. Youtube videos on a browser stay paused on 00:00...
Saffire pro 24 is detected. I can select it on System preferences or garageband settings. On Saffire Mix Control 3.5 I can see how audio inputs are ok, the input signal is received and the output is ok. According to Saffire Mix Control everything's fine, but I can't play audio nor record sound.
If I switch to internal audio device everything works perfectly.
I did some research and every time I try to play sound these errors are shown on the Console.

It looks like there's some problem with Airplay? I didn't even know what Airplay was until now but after looking for some information I don't understand what has Airplay to do with playing sound over firewire.
I tried to disable Airplay on System Preferences > Display. I removed com.apple.airplay.plist from Library/Preferences but the results are the same
Please a need help with this. It's getting really frustrating. I'm trying to get help from Focusrite support as well.

In case another poor man like me run into this issue, here's how I solved it:
First of all, I removed Saffire Mix Control entirely following this guide:
    http://global.focusrite.com/answerbase/how-do-i-remove-saffire-mixcontrol-from-m y-mac
In addition to that I did this:
    1. Mac HD > Library > Preferences > Audio and in there please delete the two preference files
    2. Finder > Go > Hold down the "Alt" key and click on the library folder. In there please trash the file "com.apple.audiomidisetup.plist" (in case it exists)
Then I emptied the trash, restarted system and reinstalled Saffire Mix Control 3.5
    Problem solved.

  • Lowest latency Firewire audio interface for Logic... which should I choose?

    Hi Guys,
I'm about to replace my trusty Yamaha n12 with a dedicated firewire audio interface.
My main requirement is super-low latency for running BFD and other virtual instruments, along with monitoring through Logic directly sometimes (to add effects to vocals in real-time, etc).
I've narrowed down my choice (I think!!) to:
    - RME Fireface 800
    - Apogee Ensemble
    - MOTU 896 Mk3
I have been told that the RME drivers are incredible, and hence it has the lowest latency.
I'd love to hear from other Logic users who own any of the above! What kind of latency do you get (round trip in ms)? What is the lowest buffer setting you can use?
Any downfalls or problems you've had with any of these interfaces?
Thanks heaps guys, can't wait to hear some opinions!
    Cheers and thanks,
    Mike

    Thomjinx wrote:
If yeloop is using BFD, then direct monitoring isn't going to help him. That is for audio in.
    Exactly.
FWIW, on MOTU Ultralites, I get a little (less than 1 ms) less latency with the Mk 1 rather than the Mk 3.
Perhaps the built-in DSP slows the Mk 3 down?
Interesting--thanks for the info (one more reason not to upgrade MOTU, frankly...)!
It is still 4.3 ms at 32 samples with the Mk 3. For MIDI controlled VIs, it would be less than that.
    I think I measured 3.9ms with my Traveler mk2 at 44.1k with a 32 sample buffer. So, it's a bit faster than the mk3. At 96k I can use a 32 sample buffer to get 2.5ms latency, but I can't run BFD2 with a 32 sample buffer. Best I can do with BFD2 is a 64 sample buffer at 96k... 3.16ms.
But, you're exactly right, Thomjinx: with a VI, you won't hear that full amount of latency. Assuming the MIDI latency is negligible, the VI response time will be roughly 1/2 the full analog audio latency. (Logic reports both of the these figures--output latency and full roundtrip latency--if you click on the latency info in the Audio preferences. Be aware, though, that some devices report this information correctly, while others do not. For instance, with the Apogee and Metric Halo products I've used, the numbers reported by Logic are exactly correct, while with MOTU, the numbers shown in Logic are lower than reality: with a 64 buffer at 44.1k the Traveler mk2 indicates 4.3ms roundtrip latency with Logic, but I measured it as 5.6ms... so you may be misled if you try to use the latency values reported by Logic to compare products... in that regard, MOTU seems to cheat, while Apogee and Metric Halo follow the rules

  • Problem with FireWire audio interface (Edirol FA-66)

I am experiencing the following problem with my FireWire Audio interface via Edirol FA-66. At unpredictible moments the 'Digital In' LED starts blinking, and after that the audio signal stops working. I do not know if Logic is the culprit, since it also happens now and then with iTunes
Note: there are digital in/outs connected.
Only shutting down the Edirol and restarting the iMac G5 resolves the problem, be it only temporary: after a while the phenomenon shows up again.
    Extremely ennoying.
    What could be the culprit?

Hi Patrick, I don't know that specific interface but could it possibly be that the flashing LED also act as an alert for when the firewire connection has gone down?
Reason I suggest this is I have the same thing from with my iMac & focusrite saffire Le, where i lose audio now & then, & when it happens if i check in the interfaces software control panel it always has a 'firewire connection error' - I then just have to unplug & replug-in the interface to re-establish the firewire conection. Just a thought but maybe it's worth consulting the edirol manual/tech support to see if this is the case ref the LED function?

Same thing here with Mavericks and M-Audio Fast Track Ultra.  Very easy to reproduce, Apple. Set your audio interface for the external device, try to record Photo Booth video. It will crash. Every. Single. Time. Always.

  • IChat AV doesn't work with M-Audio Firewire audio interface

I saw similar topics to this but none dealing with a Firewire audio interface and none with exactly the same problem.
Every other piece of software I use works with the M-Audio Firewire Solo, except for iChat AV. When it is the selected output device and I start a video chat with someone, I get just horrible, loud static when the person on the other end speaks.
Running 10.4.10 on a Macbook Pro (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).
Does anyone know of incompatibility issues with iChat and Firewire interfaces?

In Audio MIDI Setup (In applications/Utilities) the setting for my Mic is 44100khz 1Ch 16bit.
The Internal Audio connection also shows up at 44100Khz 2Ch 16bit
Are you looking in the same place or in the device itself ?
I would set it in the Audio MIDI Setup and then make sure it responds in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab.
Once the Blue bar moves to at least halfway there I would then check iChat > Preferences > Video Section to see if the green bar under the Vido pics is moving.

  • USB Vs FIREWIRE AUDIO INTERFACES?

what is the advantage of having a firewire audio interface over a usb audio interface?
I have a Edirol UA-25 USB Audio interface and am going to be using it with my new macbook pro that i have just ordered!
I just want to know if this interface would work fine with logic on a macbook pro? or would it reduce performance coz its USB and not Firewire? and buy how much? whats the difference?
    Thanks for your help
    John

Basically, USB won't allow you to go with buffer settings as low as Firewire. That means you will have more latency with USB than with FW. Some drivers are more CPU intensive than others but I can't say this is a USB thing only. The first Yamaha MLAN drivers were terrible even if MLAN uses FW. I don't think USB or FW have an impact on tracks count.
    Sorry for the double post.

  • IMac FireWire Audio Interface keeps disconnecting

I'm having an intermitten issue with my iMac, which worked (and still works) fine with my IBM based notebook. My firewire audio interface keeps disconnecting, it works fine for a while (could be anywhere between 5 mins to 2 hours) before completing not giving any output, it doesn't switch back to Core Audio during this time. However, if I turn in off and on again, it's fine again.
    Any ideas?
