Folder/File Decryption in Windows 8.1

Hello,
I have a folder with some files in it, and two sub-directories also with files in them, that I encrypted some time ago, but after I've been updated to Windows 8.1.
Suddenly, even though there is only one account on this computer (administrator), it will not allow me to decrypt the folder (and/or subfolders or individual files). When I Right-Click->Properties->Advanced...->UNCHECK Encrypt Contents to secure
data-> OK->Apply, first I get a 'Access Denied' 'You will need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes. Click Continue to complete this operation.' Click Continue and get: 'An error occurred applying attributes to the file: C:\Blah.jpg
Access is Denied' and then the option to Ignore/Try Again (Same Result)/Cancel.
The only thing I can think is, randomly about a month ago, my password stopped working to sign in on my computer (strange right?). I then had to reset it online in order to get back into my computer. I haven't needed these files since before then. Could
the fact that I encrypted them with a different original password matter here?
Here's what I've tried:
Verified that under Security All users have full access (there is only me after all).
Clicked on 'Advanced'
Checked all permissions for full access.
Added HomeUsers to that folder with full access.
Added Everyone in the Share Tab.
Added my username to the Audit tab.
Added my username to the Effective User tab.
Everything says I have full control..in fact ANYONE on this computer has full control..yet all I get upon opening is 'Access Denied. You do not have permissions to view this file'.
Any thoughts?
V/R,
Larry

Larry,
The reason that you’re receiving the “Access Denied” error is because your system is unable to find the encryption key and related certificate that were used to originally encrypt the files.
The
Recover encrypted files or folders webpage states:
“You can lose access to encrypted files if you install a new operating system or upgrade your current one, or if your current operating system fails.”You must have a backup copy of your encryption key and related certificate on a disc or other
removable media (such as a USB flash drive)
If you were able to back up your encryption key and certificate before upgrading to Windows 8.1, follow these steps to regain access:
Right-click on the start button and select Run.You must      have a backup copy of your encryption key and related certificate on a      disc or other removable media (such as a USB flash drive) to
follow the      steps below.
Type in certmgr.msc and press Enter.
In the left pane, click Personal.
Click the Action menu, point to All Tasks, and then click
Import. This opens the Certificate Import wizard.
Click Next.
Type the location of the file that contains the certificate, or click
Browse and navigate to the file's location, click Open, and then click
Next.
If you have navigated to the right location but don't see the certificate you are importing, then, in the list next to the
File name box, click Personal Information Exchange.
Type the password, select the Mark this key as exportable check box, and then click
Next.
Click Place all certificates in the following store, confirm that the
Personal store is indicated, click Next, and then click
Finish.
Note: Do not enable strong private key protection.
After you import the certificate, you should have access to the encrypted files.

• Cannot open folder files in browser window

Since the last 5 or so firefox update, i notice i am unable to open folder
files in the browser window on most of the websites i
have been on. Therefore if i need to upload a file on a website
when i click the open folder button on the website, i am
not seeing the folder window open with all my files on my
computer that i need to select. Instead i have to use another
browser to do all my uploads, and that breaks my momentum.
How can this be corrected?

Hi hardworker2014,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

• ADF: Component for selection of a folder/file path serverside

Hello,
i'm searching for a standard component within ADF to choose a folder/file on the the server or still better a folder/file an a windows net share drive.
The concrete environment is an Oracle OC4J on a unix server and a windows fileserver with a net share drive.
My ADF Application within the OC4J instance should show a file dialog to choose a folder an the windows share.
I think components like inputFile are only to choose a file on the client machine. Is there any component similar to choose a serverside folder/file?
Thanks for any comment
regards
Markus

Hi,
there is no component that does this for you. All you could do is to write a tree model that shows the hierarchical structure you query from the server. Then using links on the tree nodes you may allow users to download or open files

• List Folder does not find WIndows shortcut files

Hello,
Why doesn't the "List Folder" vi find the Windows shorcut files? The WIndows short files have a extension of "*.lnk",  I am using Labview 2011 SP1 on a WIndows XP Pro machine, the shorcut files are on a mapped network drive.  I can find the shortcut files if a open a cmd window and use the dir command.

It seems to work for me as well.  As Mike said, the shortcuts to folders showed up in the folders list.

• How can I use my time capsule to save files from my windows PC (Windows 8.1)?

I have been to see the iStore close to where I live but I am frustrated to say that they are no help what so ever. The technical desk there freely admits that they do not how to do it and all they say is "apparently it is easy. Just follow the instructions on screen" which helps me no end!
I have the Time Capsule set up on my mac and want to use part of the disc to save my files from my Windows PC (running Windows 8.1) that is on the same home network.
I have found the apple forums so helpful in the past that I am pinning on my hopes on anyone that can help me via the forum now!

Load the airport utility for windows. Sadly the most recent one is old.
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Although it is for windows 7 it does work on 8 and 8.1 .. tell us if you have problems loading it. Some people find it won't work without using safe mode.
The utility will not help a lot to setup the latest model TC.. it is fine for Gen4 and earlier. But it does load bonjour for windows and a disk access agent.
The TC should run simple names.. Short.. keep them below 10 characters if you can. No spaces and pure alphanumeric.
That includes the base station name and wireless name.
Once all of that is correct, open windows explorer and type in the address bar.
\\TCname or \\TCipaddress where you replace TCname with the new short name or TCipaddress with obviously its actual IP.
You will then get a request for username and password. Username is whatever.. admin will do. Password type in your disk access password.. public by default.
TC is not designed to allow partitions so you cannot partition the TC disk. Create a folder and simply copy and paste your files to the folder.
NOTE:: The TC cannot back itself up. So make sure you do not move files to the TC without having another copy.
NOTE:: The TC does not happily mix TM backups and data.
See http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html For info about TM and the TC.
This area in particular.

I want to open a folder in a separate window by clicking on it.  For some reason when I click on a folder it just replaces the one I was just in.  I want them both to be open at the same time without having to go through several steps. Old apple operating systems made it easy to have several folders open at one time.

Eric, thanks that works but seems like an extra added step also to do it that way.  I've got to move and organize a ton of files and I'm looking for a easy way to get this done.  I could also open the folder into a separate tab and then drag the tab out so it becomes an open window but thats a lot of fussing around also with extra steps.  Not sure why these newer operating system seems more confusing and less user friendly than what they used to.  In the past I could just click on any folder and it would open in a separate window making it really easy to copy or move files from one place to the other just by simply dragging them from one window to the other.  Seems like I'm going through several extra steps now to do a simple task.

• Let ff auto delete file from c:windows\temp after download?

Say you download a rar file. firefox builds the file first in C:\windows\temp as it download to completion. Then FF COPIES this file to the destination folder which could be on another drive. BUT FF never deletes this temp-file in c:windows\temp after copying. And you can NOT delete this file temp-file until you close FF. Deleting browser history temp files using ctrl-shift-del does not work.
Why is this?
Say I download many rar files at once. After each file completes firefox cCOPIES them to the destintaion directory. Again they go to another drive. BUT FF never deletes the temp-files form c:\windows\temp after completion of download and copying to the destintaion folder. UNLESS you close firefox.
Meanwhile this can clog up my small SSD drive which is only 20GiB
Need workaround please?

OK you developers are such autistic a**holes. I just tried to manually delete the temp files FF makes when downloading files from c:\windows\temp. This did not free up space there's still the same amount of space left (163MB) on my SSD as before deleting the tempfiles form this dir. WTF is this?

• "Open each folder in the same window" not working

hey guys, just today, I noticed that whenever i double click a folder, it opens in a new window.  I went to folder properties, and made sure I checked "Open each folder in the same window," and its checked.  I tried switching it on, then off, then restoring all defaults in both those settings and the view settings, and I've tried restarting the computer, even using a system restore point.  No Matter what, whenever I double click a window, it opens in a new window, but if I use the navigation pane, or if I highlight a window and click the open button at the top left, it opens in the same window.  This is very very very annoying, because just navigating my harddrive, I might end up with 20 windows open to reach just 1 file.
Does anyone know what's wrong?  or how I can fix this?

I was experiencing this same issue on my laptop and spent several frustrating hours of searching in vain for a solution. I tried most of the same fixes mentioned here with no success (re-registering DLL's, running the system file checker [sfc /scannow],
turning off the navigation pane, performing virus scans, etc). After almost giving up, I discovered that I only experienced this behavior when I accessed Explorer from the shortcut which was pinned to my taskbar. When I opened the "Computer" shortcut
on my desktop, I was able to open individual folders without having new windows open each time. I suspect that this is related to the new design/function of the taskbar in Windows 7. To get the results I wanted, I opted to revert to the "classic" style
taskbar seen in Windows Vista (AKA the "Quicklaunch" toolbar) by following the instructions here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/add-the-quick-launch-bar-to-the-taskbar-in-windows-7/
Then, I simply added a new shortcut to "Computer" in the new Quicklaunch toolbar and, "Voila!" - problem solved. Oddly enough, I don't experience the same behavior on my desktop PC which is also running Windows 7. Ain't Microshaft grand?!? (a-hem)

• Can't restore Windows 7 file backup in Windows 8.1

Hi There,
This seems to be quite a stupid issue to have but here we go...  before installing Windows 8.1 onto my laptop I took a backup of my user files using the Windows 7 backup tool which created me an array of zip files, with a catlog file and a MediaID.bin...
all normal.
I then performed a fresh install of Windows 8.1, deleting the existing Windows 7 partitions.
Having completed the install I'm finding it impossible to restore my Windows 7 backup...  I can't even find a function which allows me to browse to a backup location to try and restore!?
The Windows 7 File Recovery tool isn't there any more, and for all intents and purposes "Recovery" doesn't seem to do anything useful... I don't want to restore a system image, just some files.
Can anyone help with my probable stupidity??  I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Well I'm extracting the new backup set and guess what WinRAR 5.01 took care of the long filename problem, with a full video shortly. The long filenames was windowsold. The metro apps have very long names.
To all admins/MS employees after watching the next video, I'm asking for shadow
Darkken to stop repeatedly telling us this does not work when in fact this does.
You really can't read.
Long filenames aren't the issue here. They never were, and I pointed that out several times.
Large files that get split across the set are the problem. As in some files are being split into multiple smaller files pieces that simply extracting and overwriting each other doesn't work.
Seriously, I give up. You simply do not hear people, you're too concerned with phantom issues that no one but you has brought up, and you don't take the time to actually pay any attention to what people are saying.
The article YOU posted even mentions these files, and advises people to ruin them and make them useless.
My problem was long filenames, anyways I have fully extracted and completed the backup set using winzip. For larger files I use this method.

Re: How to use Windows 7 file recovery in windows 8.1?
Windows 8.1 no longer has Windows Backup, because it has been replaced by the File History feature. In Windows 8, you could still access the Windows 7 backup/restore utilities, but these have been removed in Windows 8.1.
When you create a backup using Windows Backup, you should use the Restore Files wizard to restore the files. If you can't use the Restore Files wizard (for example, when you're using a computer that’s not running Windows Vista or Windows 7), you can manually
extract files from a backup by following these steps:
1.       Open the location where your backup is saved.
The files in your backup are saved as zip files.
Right-click the backup file (a file with the Windows Backup icon and the name of your computer), and then click Open.
To manually extract files that are larger than 200 MBs
If a file is larger than 200 MBs, it will be split into multiple zip files. You will need to extract and then combine these files following these steps:
1.       Open the location where your backup is saved.
Find the zip files that contain the file you want to extract. For example, if you're trying to extract a video file named BirthdayParty, you would find the zip files that contain files with that name.
Create a folder on your desktop to extract the files to.
Since the files all have the same name, you'll need to rename them as you extract them.
Extract the first file into the folder you created on your desktop and then rename the file.
Repeat this step until you have extracted all of the files, making sure that you name them similarly. For example, if you have four files for the BirthdayParty video, name them BirthdayParty1, BirthdayParty2, BirthdayParty3, and BirthdayParty4.
Open the Command Prompt window by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, click Command Prompt.
Type the following command: copy /b filename*.file_extension new_filename.file_extension
For example, copy /b BirthdayParty*.avi BirthdayPartyAll.avi
WINZIP OR WINRAR WILL WORK FOR YOU, IF NEEDED TO BE. VHD FILE WILL WORK FOR YOU IF YOU CREATED THE IMAGE. I HAVE NO PROBLEM RESTOREING 10 GIG ISO SPLIT INTO 5 FILES. I HAVE EVERY IMPORTANT FILE I

• Problem with file permissions in Windows shares

Due to a company merger we are now supporting a group of Macs in our PC environment. These Macs connect to our Windows shares. This generally works well, however we have discovered a problem. It’s to do with the way our Macs interact with our Windows shares. When they copy a file to a windows share they take the permissions for the file they copy from the route of the share rather than from the subfolder the files are copied to and write the file permissions accordingly.
This only affects admin users who use Macs with the ability to change file permissions. Everyone else inherits the permissions from the subfolder as they should because their account can’t change the permissions. If the route and subfolder permissions are the same then there is no change. If they are different, the Mac will use the share route permissions as preference.
We have shares where users don’t have access to the route folder but do have access to other folders. This is so that they can’t change the top level folder structure. However they are able to create folders and files under the top level folders. If an administrator uses a Mac, no one has access to any files or folders they create because users don’t have access to the route folder and this is copied to the files and folders they create. This doesn’t affect our PC’s only the Macs.
We are using the latest Mac OS fully updated and Windows 2008 server. Is this a normal Mac ‘Feature’? Is there a work around?

I’m a bit disappointed by the lack of response to my problem. As Windows is the predominant file server in business, this problem must have occurred before.
Are Mac people really saying that Macs are not designed to connect to networks? At the moment our Macs are unusable apart from a few isolated tasks. Basically they are used by a few designers who work in isolation. If PC’s had this problem no one would buy them.

• How to Move Offline Files Cache in Windows 7?

I'm using the offline files feature in Win7 (much better implementation, btw - kudos!) and I've run into a problem:  the CSC is using up all the drive space on C:\.  I'd like to move the CSC to D:\, however I've been unable to do so.
I've seen this posted here previously (2/2009), however the response was to follow the instructions from Vista (using migwiz.exe).  When I launch migwiz.exe, I have no option of selecting the offline files as outlined in the Vista instructions (http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/archive/2006/12/12/moving-the-offline-files-cache-in-windows-vista.aspx).
Are there any other ways of doing this?
Thanks!

Hi everyone,
I have found a way to move the offline cache in W7, but it means you have to reset your existing offline files, give the new location, and resync the folders in the new location.
Here is what to do (if you haven't synchronised any offline files yet, for exemple after a clean install, you can start directly in step 3):
0) Make sure your existing offline files are synchronised with the server, as you are going to lose ALL the offline copies and you don't want to lose any new/modified files. Make a backup if you're not sure and if the files are important.
1) reset the content of the old cache by adding the following command in a batch file and running it (of course you can add the parameter in the registry manually, but it's quite handy to have the batch ready whenever you need to reset the cache):
REG ADD "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters" /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
2) Reboot, the added key will be detected, all the content of the cache will be deleted, as well as the key itself (it only resets once)
3) Add the following registry key in the same HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters section of the registry:
Type: REG SZ (string)
Name: CacheLocation
Value: the new location in NT format, ie \??\d:\csc if you want to create the new cache in d:\csc
4) Create the folder in the new location
5) Reboot (not sure if it's necessary, but better safe than sorry)
6) Reselect the files/folders you want to sync offline, and they should sync in the new location.
7) If you want to, you can delete the old cache location in c:\windows\csc by following the end of the vista procedure linked in the first post (using takeown etc)
It worked for me (Win7 RTM x86), let us know if it works for you...
Obviously it won't help if you don't want to / can't resynchronise, but if you're starting from scratch or don't mind resyncing from scratch, it's a good workaround.
EDIT: if you sync a lot of files and get a lot of errors, try to reset your offline files again following the above procedure (steps 1-2), disable offline files, reboot, enable offline files, reboot, and resync your files. Again, it worked for me...

Very important : your catalog does not contain your pictures. They are where you have imported them in your computer. If they are all under a master folder like 'My Pictures' or 'Pictures', you should set your backup software to backup those folders.
The catalog itself is mainly a database keeping all the information about your pictures : location, keywords, ratings, albums...
It's a folder containing the dababase and several other components. You find its location looking in the help section, system info.
The integrated backup / restore process in Elements saves both your media files and the catalog.
