Folder in new window?
So I've just installed Yosemite. So far, most things are ok, even wifi.. but one irritation. How do you open folders in a new finder window?? This use to be the default for me but now it opens in the same window, Microsoft and Browser style.. I want a new window when i double click on the folder. I tried changing the finder preference, by unclicking the bos 'open folders in new tab instead of new window' but they still open in the same window, unless I right click and tell it to open a new window.. I know its minor, but is there any way to change this?
Thanks,
Theo
Hi cschliek,
yes its a pain. Even in Windows, you can change that behavior. I never understood it, why have 'windows' at all if everything opens in the same one and you have to navigate back and forth? I haven't found a solution yet, except I already know my next computer will be Linux only. Still, at least this update is free, so well done for that, Apple.
Regards,
T.
P.S. yes, I found the mouse preference, thanks.

Mac OS 10.9 Maverick -- no "open in new window" option
Upgraded to the new Mac 10.9 Maverick and now there are no "open folder in new window" option, or at least it doesn't work. Please advise. Thanks!
What doesn't work? Please explain what it does.
If I right-click on a folder, then hold down Option, I can choose Open folder in New Window, and that does happen.
If you hold down command and double-click, it will open in a new Tab instead of opening the folder in the same window.
With more than a single tab,
If you hold down cmd-opt and double-click, it will open the folder in a new window.
Without other tabs, it closes the original window just like holding down Option. -
Finder insists on opening new windows behind current window
A new behavior of Finder (10.5.5) started this morning, and it's annoying as heck:
Every time I double-click a folder, the new window appears behind the source window. The new window has the same view characteristics as it did when it was closed (size, view, sort order, etc.), but it's "one behind" the window containing the folder I double-clicked.
Thing to note:
Sometimes, changing the view of the folder, closing it, and reopening it will cause it to open on top again. Sometimes not.
Deleting all of the .DS_Store files with "sudo find . -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;" from my home directory did not affect the behavior.
That I can tell, I have not changed anything on my machine in the last 24 hours.
This happens with folders which are on shared drives (even ones where I have no write permissions, so no .DS_Store possibility) and local drives.
As LOLcat would say, HALP!
Thanks,
BillTurns out, it was a new mouse on the USB. I had the double-click speed set to its fastest position (in the Mouse/Keyboard System prefs), and the net result was that double-clicking was, for some reason, acting like a triple-click, the third click bringing the first window to the fore.
Dell mouse problem? Mouse/Keyboard System prefs problem?
Dunno', but I'm glad that problem's gone. -
How can I get a pdf. to open in Safari, all i'm getting is a new window with a black, blank page, instead of the pdf., and I don't want to save the file to the desktop, Safari didn't use to do that, and I don't have Adobe in the internet plug in folder.
Hi
Please take a look to this thread Re: Can I refresh the browser rather than open a new tab? -
With Mavericks I have to hold command key down and double click to get a sub folder to open in a new window. Can I go back to just double clicking ?
Of course. To do it, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and untick "Open folders in tabs instead of new windows".

Office 2010, Windows 7 64 bit, BB sync, everything has been fine since forever. All of a sudden between Saturday and today, *poof* I can't get the calendar view.
I have tried the switches, /resetfolder and all the rest, repair install Office, etc., no go.
I can log into my OWA view and calendar shows up there, but on the local system, when you clicl on Calendar, it shows My Calendars at the top, but there is no calendar. The only way to view it is to right click Calendar and choose 'Open in New Window'.
All my data is there, can add to it and all, but it is missing from the folder list, thereby making it very difficult to use.
I also created a new profile, connected to Exchange ONLY and it still will only show the calendar if you select 'Open in New Window Only'. I can post a screen shot if this allows.
Thanks in advance.
Brian
Hi ,
I suggest you refer to the following steps to recreate the Calendar folder.
1. Switch Outlook to Online mode.
2. Start MFCMAPI and create a backup of the Calendar items
a. Open the Calendar folder by double clicking it.
b. Select all items (simple ctrl+a).
c. Copy all items into an empty folder.
d. Additionally you can create a backup using a PST file if you wish.
3. Delete the Calendar folder using MFCMAPI.
4. Close Outlook.
5.Recreate Windows Profile and Outlook Profile.
6. Start Outlook with “/resetfolders” switch, this will recreate the default Calendar folder.
7. Try to set permissions on the Calendar folder to see how it works with a fresh and empty folder.
8. Copy/Move the items back into the Calendar.
By the way, I don’t understand “the local system” what you said, it can view My calendars at top in Outlook or OWA ?
And it can’t view calendar list or the calendar content under My Calendar?

Where is the "Always open folder in new Finder Window/Tab" option ?
Prior to 10.9, we have an options to choose whether to open folders in the same window in Finder preference. But I can't find anything similiar to that in Mavericks. Now I'm forced to open folders within the same window / tab, unless I press the CMD key while double clicking on the folder, and I still yet to find a way to do so with keyboard navigation.
Did I missed something ?Yes I know that, but that option is completely useless, since you're forced to open a folder within the same tab.
Even with that option turned on, you still can "open folder in new tab" only by holding CMD key while double-clicking on a folder. And there is still no way to open a folder in new tab with keyboard navigation: CMD+O or CMD+Down-Arrow will always open folder within same tab.
So I consider this as a bug; maybe someone just forget to enable this option in the Finder preference dialogbox.
Is there any terminal command (defaultswrite ?) or 3rd party tool like TinkerTool, OnyX or Deeper that can change the default behavior of Finder ? -
Finder preferences: How do I just DBL click folder to get a new window
I don't want to have to push cmd and click folders Every time I want a folder to open in a new window. I want a New Window EVERY time I dbl click a folder, as I have done for as long as I can remember in Mac system. Open a folder in a new tab or window
When you open a folder in a Finder window, the folder’s contents usually replace the current contents of the window. If you prefer, you can open a folder in a new tab or window.
To open a specific folder, press the Command (⌘) key while you double-click the folder. The folder opens in a new tab or window, depending on your Finder preferences. To change the preference, choose Finder > Preferences, click General, then select or deselect “⌘-double-click opens a folder in a new tab.” (Deselect the option if you prefer a new window.)
To open a new Finder window without opening a specific folder, choose File > New Finder Window or press Command (⌘)–N.
If a Finder window’s toolbar and sidebar are hidden, then double-clicking a folder in the window (without pressing the Command key) opens the folder in a new window.

If this is selected, double-clicking a folder while holding down the Command (⌘) key opens a new tab. And as you have noted on your website, it breaks the functionality of typing Command-Shift-A to go to Applications and such. Now that Yosemite has officially been released, are you going to create an update?
Also, an update that returns the green button to being maximize instead of full screen (without having to hold down Option) would also be welcome! -
Open KM folder navigation in new window
Hi Experts,
We have created KM navigation iView to display the documents from a folder. We have a requirement to open the navigation in new window when click on the folder.
For example path to documents are displaying from the /documents foder path as
documents
Test1.doc
Test.html
When I click on the documents folder, it should open the complete navigation in new window, at present it jsut refresh the page and render in the same window. Any one have idea whether to change in the Collection render or Resoure render class.
Thanks,
ChinnaHi
Collection render com.sapportals.wcm.rendering.collection.cm.CollectionListRenderer is being used to render the columns. This class exists under com.sap.km.cm.ui.flex portalapps, which is WEB-INF/portal/portalapps/com.sap.km.cm.ui.flex/private/lib folder. If I need to create new collection render by extending this class do I need to make the changes in the existing app ( com.sap.km.cm.ui.flex).
Can anyone suggest what is the approach to fulfill my requirement as in my first thread.
Thanks
Chinna. -
Whenever, I try to open any folder or sub-folder in my Administrator account, it automatically opens new multiple
windows with same folder.
For example, I tried to open a folder in my "Downloads" it automatically opened 2 new windows with same folder contents.
What should I do to open it in the same window?
Is there any way to repair this annoying problem...

Every finder folder clicked opens new window
I own a late 2011 13" Macbook Pro, which I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and also Bootcamped with a proffessional version of Windows 7. When I first got it, I had downloaded a Preference Pane called "Secrets" which opened up some more technical and deep settings menu where you could choose more options. Their website is here: http://secrets.blacktree.com. Unfortunately, I clicked an option once that made every folder clicked a new window. So when in icon view, or list view, every new item I click becomes a window. I know this isn't standard because my friends early 2011 MBA running Lion does no such thing. I uninstalled the pref pane long ago, and didn't notice it until recently. It isn't a horrible issue, but simple tasks get really annoying. After reinstalling the pref pane and searching for an option, there is no such thing. Can somebody figure out a way out of it? My buddys laptop closes the previous window after an icon is clicked. It's really annoying when getting to my homework folder leaves my screen looking like this.
Any help is appreciated.Click on the Desktop. Go to the menu at top. Click on "Finder" and go down to "Preferences."
In "Finder Preferences," click on "General."
In General, UNcheck "Always open folders in a new window."
Hope that helps. -
The new iTunes 12 does not have a rent tab. I've downloaded two movies which appear in the Movies folder on my Windows Explorer but not in the actual iTunes programme itself. Completely frustrating! Where can I find these two movies to watch? It asked me once it was downloaded if I wanted to watch it but I wasn't ready to and now can't find where to play these again.
When iTunes/iPod sync process failed due to timeout, the iPod, has only the initilaised filesytem structure at the start of the Sync.
The timeout failure could be due to
Bad hardisk - do the iPod disk diagnostic, refer to this excellent post by tt2
Slow USB port or resource - Dont use any USB hub, disconnect all other USB devices while syncing
Timeout due to Antivirus or other plugins - disconnect from Internet and stop the Antivirus or monitoribng software if you are syncing.
Preferably stop doing other things while syncing this ancient device, which the latest iTunes designer, think will soon be extinct.

New window opening every time a folder is opened.
Every time I open a new folder, instead of showing the content of that new folder within the same window, another one is opened.
I even went to the preferences and the option "Always open folders in new windows" was not selected.
Relaunching finder didn't help either, and so did restarting my laptop.
Also, the bar that reguarly appears at the bottom of the finder window containing information about disk space and number of files is at the top of the finder window.Step 1 output
