Folder is hidden

I have set up a folder called Parallels-Shared in my home directory. I know it exists because I see it in spotlight and also when I view the folder listing in terminal. However, it does not appear in Finder. Why is this, and how can I make it visible?

Don't worry about it--Applescript syntax is its own little world. I just spent 30 minutes trying to get a very simple script to work. Did you restart the Finder after changing the visible attribute? You can do that by holding down the option key, click and hold the Finder icon in the Dock and select relaunch. If the relaunched Finder still doesn't show the folder, take a look at my article on the invisible problems:
http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
The Terminal commands are very useful for diagnosing the problem, and you'll see more information about scripts and folders near the end of the article.

    hi
I would like to ask whether does Microsoft have a solution on this issue
need help on folders in thumbdrive, external harddisk become shortcut and original folder become hidden. and there will be a Recycler hidden folder, inside is a randomName.exe file(with a lady image as the program icon). Once the user click on the
shortcut of the folders, it will activate the .exe file and install onto Windows and with any pendrive, external harddisk plug to the infected machine all will be affected when plug to a clean machine and the cycle repeat itself.. by infect other
    clean machine.

This is just because of infection is propagated.. As a result files are hidden..  attrib is great as it is suggested by S Guna . May be you can make a batch file or something like that? But there is a chance of reinfection if you don't clean your infected
systems as well as your pendrives..
Plug your infected flash drive and
Use one scanner at a time
Download hitman pro 3.7 (shareware and can be activated for 30 days free)and have a full system scan including your pendrive.. http://www.surfright.nl/en
    And/or
use malwarebyte have a full system including your pendrivescan http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
    And/or
Use Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool  downloaded from uninfected pc and transfer to you pc and install and have a full system scan

If everything fails, you can use offline bootable resccue cd and do a full system scan...

    or hitman kickstart bootable pendrive

    Then
(1)Check whether your files are hidden.. Most of the time files and folders are hidden as a result of pen drive malware infection..
It will change the attributes of the files/folders.
In that case u can use attrib command and
    attrib -s -h -a -r
This is how it is used.. attrib method is common for windows

  • The Documents folder icon hidden...

The Documents icon in my Home folder is hidden. The icon still appears in the sidebar, but it is missing in the finder windows and Open & Save dialog boxes.
I can navigate to the Documents folder from the sidebar as well as using the Terminal. All of my documents that are saved in the Documents folder are still there and accessible, but the folder is not accessible from a shared computer.
Is there any way to restore the hidden attribute of the Documents folder?

  • Why is library folder not hidden when i double click on Mcintosh HD icon?

When i double click on the HD icon in the desktop I can see the Library folder as well as an opt folder

Something has apparently changed the invisibility settings. This sometimes happens during a system upgrade. It's merely an appearance issue. If you wish you can make the folders invisible using the Terminal:
    sudo chflags hidden /opt
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted and press RETURN again.
The Library folder is supposed to be visible along with the Applications, System, and Users folders.
The only invisible Library folder is the one located in your Home folder.

  • Image files in iPhoto 'Originals' folder are hidden

When I click 'Show Original File' in iPhoto, it faithfully opens a finder window that points to where the photo should be, but alas is nowhere to be found. If I go to the directory with terminal, the files are all there, plain as day. I'm guessing that iPhoto/Finder has somehow set the invisible/hidden bit on the original file. This is particularly annoying when exporting images with 'Original' selected in the 'Kind' attribute, as they are hidden then also! So the questions are:
-How do I get it to stop making items invisible when I import them?
-Is there an easy way to unhide the files?
    Cheers!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I wonder do you have the same problem?
The only way I can find my "Original" file is by searching for a specific photo through the finder and then double clicking on the path file at the bottom.
Sounds to me like you've recently updated your iPhoto from a much earlier version (v6 or before).
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Missing applications folder, gone hidden & need help!

This is the second time this has happened to me and someone did tell me how to fix this but I have since forgotten. I'm hoping someone here can remind me.
I've got an eMac running 10.4.10 and when I open the Finder window, the applications folder is no longer there, where it should be and slowly my Mac is turning haywire. Apparently it has gone "hidden" and I don't know how to un-hide it. If someone could please let me know how to fix this, that would be great. And if someone knows why this has happened to me more than once so I can avoid it in the future, that would be great too.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Your startup drive should be the drive listed on your Desktop. If you never renamed it, then it is probably named "Macintosh HD" which is the default. You can also go to the Apple menu item and select "About This Mac" and just above the More Info button there should be the entry
    Startup Disk Nameofdisk
You would use the name shown in the path. So launch Script Editor and paste this in:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of folder "Macintosh HD:Applications" to true
    end tell
Be sure to use the name of your startup drive where "Macintosh HD" is in the script above, if the name is something else (mine for instance is Noobix). Then click the Compile button in the Script Editor toolbar, to make sure there aren't any errors, and then the Run button. If the script runs without reporting an error, you will need to log out and back in, or restart the Finder for the change to be recognized.

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • HELP!!! Hidden folder in MyComputer: iPod_Control

When I connect my ipod to MY computer there is a "hidden" folder calles iPod_control where i can enter and find all my music. The songs etc. are randomly divided in 49 folders. However, this hidden folder only appears when it is connected to MY OWN coputer. The folder does not appear when it is connected to other computers. But since i have gotten a new computer i need this computer to be the one which shows this hidden folder. How can i make this happen??? Help!!!
    Thanks

If the folder is "hidden" and you can see it in one computer, then you must have the folder settings in that computer set to "view hidden files".
If the "view hidden files" option is not checked in the Folder Options window (of windows explorer), then you will not be able to see those folders.
Once you change that option in ANY computer, you will be able to see ANY hidden folders.
P.S. The reason that Ipod randomly puts your music into those 49 folders and renames them all is the same reason that the folder is hidden: It's their way of making it difficult for you to copy songs FROM your Ipod TO your computer (or anyone else's)

I have no idea what "fne 2da" means. If you make a clear post that we can easily understand without needing to guess at what you mean, it would be helpful.
I see you're asking about your media file folder being hidden. If it is hidden, click on your Media icon > press the Menu key > Explore and navigate to the folder where you know it was located and press the Menu key again > Show Hidden.
If that doesn't help, then posting in clear english certainly will.

  • I desperately need to access my User Library folder in Time Machine (Lion so = not visible).

Hi. I installed Lion a few months ago and got a new external drive to back up Time Machine.
Nobody told me the User Library would be made hidden in the new OS. I have been backing up regularly in the belief that all my work, settings and so on was safe.
Yesterday my iMac (27" 2.8 Ghz Core it with 4 gib memory) suddenly went mad. Message saying finder had quit whilst trying to restore windows. Desktop was flashing, no icons clickable, no external disks readable. Could access some progs and terminal, but nothing else. Could not get into the history folder to trash various plists and so on as the folder is hidden and the alt Go wouldn't work. The Finder just wouldn't do anything.
I have sorted it out BUT I have lost my address book entries, my browser booksmarks, my desktop shortcuts and my iCal entries. I need to access my User Library on my Time Machine. Is there a way?
I cannot believe I have been religiously backing up my stuff but Apple has made it so I can't access my backup of one of the most important folders on my Time Machine???
Is there anyway of getting into this from Terminal or something? I will never be able to get back all the bookmarks and stuff I've been researching for years. I have it backed up on two different hard drives, both of which have 'invisible' library folders. I have make the folder visible now, for future backups, but it's after the horse has bolted. I am furious, and just feel like bursting into tears because of all the time it's going to take me to get all my work back. I can't tell you how stupid this was, Apple.
If someone could help I'd be really grateful. I've got older backups but they are so old they won't get back my recent stuff.
    Thanks.

    select Finder
hole option key and select Go in the menu
    Select Library
    Enter Time Machine
You should be seeing all the versions of you Library folder.

  • User cannot access redirected Documents folder, but can connect to share in Windows Explorer and access folder on server

I am in the final stages of a cross-forest migration.  Users have Windows 7 workstations with redirected folders on a Windows Server 2012 box running in the old forest.  User accounts were not migrated.  The accounts in use have always
been in the "new" forest.  One of our challenges was the large volume of data in redirected folders.  I made sure users in the target forest had continued to have access to their redirected folders in the old forest and robocopied
the entire users share, copying the permissions with the files.  By doing incremental robocopies, we can get a final copy done now in about six hours.  The plan was simple: copy the files, do an incremental copy every night, on the night of the cutover
change the folder redirection policy Documents path from
    \\oldserver\users\%USERNAME% to
\\newserver\users\%USERNAME%. The policy is configured to NOT copy user files from the existing folder to the new redirected folder.  Everything was going well until I tested the policy change.  After the folder redirection policy is updated
and applied, the user cannot access the private Documents folder.  For example, user Chester Tester logs on as ctester.  I open Windows Explorer and click the Documents shortcut.  I see one subfolder, which is subfolder of Public Documents.
So I can look at Public Documents but when I click on the Documents folder (Under the Documents library link) I get an access denied error.  Now for the kicker, if I open another Windows Explorer window and edit the address bar to
\\newserver\users\ctester, I can navigate the Documents folder tree and see my thousands of documents. What the ....?
I'm hoping this is something really simple to fix!
    TIA

    HI Vivian,
Thank you for your reply.  Yes, the path in Group Policy Folder Redirection Root Path was updated to
\\NEWSERVER\users.  I had planned to point this to the distributed file system, so the first used was actually
\\domain\dfs\users.  To simplify things I have backed off to copying to just a normal share
    \\newserver\users.
We are using BASIC folder redirection and we create a folder for each user under the root path.
We did not want the policy to move content, as we were seeing users requiring 15-20 minute logon times  (or higher) after the policy is changed.
Grant the User exclusive right to Documents - Disabled
Move the contents of Documents to the new location - Disabled
    Related folder settings
    Video - Follow Documents
    Music - Follow Documents
    Pictures - Follow Documents
Now when I change the folder redirection from old server to new server I now have TWO My Documents folders in the user's redirection folder on the server.  The redirected Documents points to an empty folder set.  The copied folders with all user
data are there, but folder redirection refuses to recognize the original folder.
I am looking at the full view of the folder, nothing hidden, so I'm wondering how a folder can have two subfolders with the exact same name.  For now, I just want the redirection to move from the old server to the new server properly.  I deleted
the new My Documents folder, rebooted the user's workstation and tried again.  The behavior repeats itself, i.e., a new My Documents folder is always created when the redirection policy is changed from the old server to the new server.  The environment
has about 1500 users with approximately 1.3TB of data in the redirected Documents folders.  OUCH!

  • I Changed permissions for every enclosed folder in my Library (not Home)

I wanted to change permissions on a fiie in my root Library (not Home Library) and clicked apply to enclosed items for the entire Library folder. Once I realized what happened (after the fact) I tried to repair permissions but things aren't working right obviously. I have a backup of the Library on my Time Machine drive that is before the snafu.
Is is possible to restore just this Library folder, and if I restored just this folder using Time Machine would it also restore the permissions as they were before I screwed up.
I'm backing up the altered Library folder to another drive just to be safe if I do need to restore.

no, that's not possible because many of those items are in use while you are booted normally. you need to do a full system restore from TM from before you did this. from your last post you seem to be doing just that. and in the future NEVER ever use "apply to enclosed items" on ANY system created folders. that applies btw to things like your home folder, the library in your home folder, your desktop folder etc. use it only on folders you made yourself. apart from messing up permissions on system files like those in the root library, many system created folders like your home folder have hidden ACLs and using 'apply to enclosed items" propagates those ACLs to everything inside.
I'm backing up the altered Library folder to another drive just to be safe if I do need to restore.

  • How can I get settings files out of the Library folder?

I had to do a clean reinstall (erase & reinstall) to clear up some problems on my Mac. Unfortunately, when you do this, your settings, customizations, bookmarks etc. aren't transferred over as they do when you upgrade in the normal way.
For example, dashboard widgets are in each user's <home folder>/Library/Widgets folder.
I could restore some of these settings by dragging the settings files from the old System Folder to the new one. Unfortunately, Apple is making this harder by hiding the Library folder in the user folder, both on the Mac and on the backup drive.
There is a command to enter in Terminal to show your Library folder, but this only seemed to work on the Mac and not on my backup drive.
How can I get key settings files out of the Library folder on my backup drive when the Library folder is hidden?
    Thanks

Open the enclosing folder, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and provide Library as the path.

When attempting to remove the Filmconvert plugin from my machine I noticed my adobe>common>plug-ins>CS5.5>MediaCore folder had vanished ! and there was also no folder for my cc version at all ? so digging deeper i noticed a large amount of my after effects plugins were installed separately in my applications folder ! I m very confused as to how this has happened and was wondering if anything like this had happened to any1 else ? and how to get everything back to normal ?
Im now worried theres something wrong with my bios on my Mac and i don't no why my plug-ins would have vanished from where they should be installed? as they still work fine in the actual software itself.

If you are on a Mac the Library folder is hidden. You have to jump through some hoops to get there.
