Folder moving - any alternative to drop & drag

Hi,
It seems to be my day for asking basic LR3 questions.
I have quite a complicated folder system that I have operated manually for quite a while and I am comfortable with it. Without going into too many details, one of the basic premises is that I have a separate area for work in hand - so that I can see exactly what I have to do and don't forget anything (which at my age does happen more than I would like!). Having done the processing, I move the folders into a completed processing area. It has benefits in splitting the photos across physical discs for safety and also helps in copying stuff to my laptop as necessary. It all works OK with me doing manual copies using windows.
In LR3 the move operation is possible by drag and drop which is OK until you have a structure which is too large for you to have both (source and target folders/discs) visible on the screen at once. At which point in windows, you either open 2 windows to make both visible or use cut and paste. Given the relatively small space for the folder structure on the LHS of LR3 I feel I will need an alternative to drag & drop.
Any suggestions?

Totally agree...however LR is designed around a database, not as a file browser. If you workflow is based on using folders and multiple copies of the same file, why eactly would you choose a application designed around a different methodology?
After all Bridge will do everything you want, far more efficiently than LR as LR is just not a file browser and does file browsing  in the traditional model (if a model that has only  been around for a decade can be called traditional) very badly, whislt Brideg does it very well. PS will also do any processing LR is capable of and a lot more. As far as I can see the only (and it is a big one) advantage of LR over Bridge and PS is that it has a far more sophisticated and user friendly (once you learn how it works) management system.

I use 'traditional' folders for organising by date + subject, 2010/2010-08-August/2010-08-20 Whitely Woods for an example of my folder structure. Yet I can still use LR's metadata approach on top of that as I simply import my logical folder structure. Best of both worlds. I simply use Br + LR where each is more advantageous/quicker/easier.
Nothing to stop KeithR16 doing the same and there are some useful workflow tips on the page referenced above that can be added to your current workflow Keith, not just as a way of replacing it.
Money is what is driving me! I can either afford to upgrade CS2 to CS5 or buy lightroom with CS2 available for detailed pixel based editing. Before anyone asks I have tried Elements and find that too restrictive to even consider using as my main pixel based photoediting method.
I have CS2 and am basically happy with it apart from it having been somewhat overtaken technologically. My D700 is not supported for RAW and the RAW engine is nowhere near as good as the modern one in CS5 or LR3. So I am looking to improve the technology - the question is what is best.
I agree wholeheartedly with much of what Pete says above. CS5 is much more suited to my way of working but it does make hard work of handling photos in "bulk" whereas Lightroom has some really good export facilities. Both are pretty crap at file naming. I have a cheap utility (Bulk Rename Utility) that beats both for flexibility albeit being a bit more hands on. There are limits to the benefits of automating some things.
On the whole despite the frustrations, LR2 + CS2 looks the way to go for the best of both worlds. My ideas are similar to those of Imajez but I just have to work out how frustrated I will be fighting LR3. Once I have decided that I will look in detail at my workflow.
Incidentally, I make extensive use of flickr but, having tried it, wouldn't touch the LR3 flickr publishing tool with the proverbial bargepole.  I like to be much more in control.

Is there ANY way to "drop" several videos or pictures at once (like an entire folder) instead of painstakingly dropping/dragging one image at a time? I just opened my Adope Premiere Elements 9 and after "working with" for 9 hours, I can't figure it out! Is there a singular CLEAR guide or video out there that teaches newbies like me how to do BASICS like this? Extremely exasperated. On verge of returning to my Windows Live Movie Maker but you all likely know how frustrating THAT is.... Please help me.

How long have you been working with Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 and on what computer operating system?
Take a look at the Premiere Elements 9 Help PDF for starter before you invest in books and such.
    http://help.adobe.com/archive/en_US/premiereelements/9/premiereelements_9_help.pdf
    On to the immediate issue....
When you "Get Media" Files and Folders, be aware that you can import folders with the format supported photos/videos inside.
Then go immediately to Organize header/ and Project in row below and click on Project.
You should see your folder there.
    a. You can drag it to the Timeline and have your photos/videos open on the Timeline
    b. You can manage folder opening and closing with the icons at the bottom left of the Project area where you see
    your imported files.
If you are at the point where you already have your Project area loaded with lots of individual imports, you can create folders
there and drag your photos/videos into different folders. But, we aware that you can drag folder or individual files
    from Project onto the Timeline.
Does any of the above help? If so, I will know I am going in the right direction for what you want to know.
What is with the painstakingly dropping/dragging one image at a time? Just how many images are in this project?
We are glad for the opportunity to help.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thanks.

Csound1 What Ive been trying to explain is that I have been running bootcamp, I open the app where the first screen is the introduction, i hit continue, the first time I select "download the latest windows support software fromm Apple" then I return and instead select "Install Windows 7." Then hit continue. The third screen is where I "Create a Partition for Windows" I set Windows to 80 gigs then hit INSTALL. As stated before Bootcamp cannot find the install drivers saying "The installer disc could not be found." My windows software is on a USB drive not a disc, I tried using a virtual disc reader to make it appear that the windows software was running on a disc, still no luck. What I would like to know is how to install windows on bootcamp.

  • Any alternatives to adobe flash?  Kind of a drag not being able to veiw certain content

Any alternatives to adobe flash?  Kind of a drag not being able to view content?  I love my iPad and will be an apple head for the rest of my days, but, adobe flash thing is a pain.

There are no ideal solutions as flash isn't supported, but depending on what sites you are trying to access, you might find that some of them (probably more so if they are news sites) have their own apps in the App Store which might let you get some of the content that you want (and there is the built-in YouTube app). Also there are browsers such as Skyfire which 'work' on some sites - but judging by the reviews not all sites. If you want to play flash games then you are probably out of luck if you want to play on-line though the iSwifter app might work on some of them, but again some flash games have app versions in the store.

Installed GoFlex 1.5 TB external drive on my iMac running OS X 10.7.4 and error says Time Machine can't create a backup folder.   Any solutions?

Well, to unmount the drive, you can use the Terminal application.
Start in Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
When the Terminal window opens, type - without the quotes and with the space at the end - this:
    "diskutil unmount "
Then drag the icon of the unmounted drive from the desktop into the Terminal window - the drive location will be added to the end of the command above.  It should look something like this:
    diskutil unmount /Volumes/volumename
    Then press enter (return).
That should unmount the drive. Now you can try the Time Machine process again with perhaps a different interconnect cable for the GoFlex.

No.  Currently no version of Captivate allows you to set up drag and drop interactions natively with images as the drag objects or targets.
However, there are two widgets that can be purchased to do this:

  • Please help!  v. 6.0 all files missing (haven't moved any, though)

    Hello everyone,
I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 and all of my files are "missing".  Each one has that little yellow ? in the left corner.
    Before you ask....
    1. I have NOT deleted any picutures/vidoes
    2. I have NOT moved any pictures/videos
    3. I have NOT upgraded the computer operating system
    4. In short, we have done NOTHING to these photos
I am baffled beyond belief.  As you can imagine, we have tons of phones dating back to 2003 of our daughter...and terrified all has been lost.  Please tell me there is a solution.  All the thumbnails are showing...but again, each one has that yellow "?" in the left corner.  I am so frustrated that I never want to use this program again.  And the fact that its older shouldn't matter.  Feel like just dumping all future things in the Windows Picture folder and forget it.  At least I wouldn't have to worry about "reconnecting" anything again.
    Hoping someone here can help.
    Signed,
    Desperately seeking a solution

If you are on Windows, a possible cause of this is that if your photos are on an external drive, and that drive has changed letters. If so, change the drive letter back.
But please tell us, what hard drive are the photos located on. Please tell us your operating system. And definitely follow Andromeda14's suggestion to see if the actual location of the photos matches the location that PSE thinks they are stored at.

  • I can't find my Desktop folder on any of my TM backups

    Hi everyone,
This is my first forum post, and I'm downright desperate.
I have migrated from my old MBP to a brand new one this weekend, and used Time Machine in an external HD to move my data. I had TM set up since February, with no options/exceptions.
As far as I can tell, everything migrated to the new computer perfectly (applications, preferences, documents, music, cookies, etc) except there is nothing on my Desktop after migration. It just so happens that I have (had?) a folder in my Desktop with all my graduate school work.
I have already looked in TM in all the backups since February, and there is no Desktop folder in my user account folder in any of them. Does this mean that TM has never backed up my Desktop from the beginning???
(BTW, I'm also having trouble to simply search for specific files when I look into the TM backup folder in my external HD. Whenever I use Spotlight, it only finds stuff on other folders in that external HD, but it doesn't return any hits from the TM backup folder, even when I look for files that I can see there just by browsing. How can I solve this?)
If it's true that TM never backed up my Desktop, my problem is then getting to my Desktop in the old computer. Trouble is, I had Leopard reinstalled at the Apple Store when I bought the new computer, since the system was supposedly backed up. As far as I know, the old computer was wiped clean and Leopard reinstalled in about 20 minutes by a Genius.
I have been told by them after the fact to use Data Rescue II to try and scour the old computer's internal drive by booting it up in target mode, but I haven't attempted it yet. I was told that if the Leopard reinstall was done in a specific way, I would be able to get to the old files with Data Rescue II still with their names and folder structures if they haven't been overwritten. However, if it was done 'another way', I would have lost the folders and any recovered files would be restored to a new location under a generic name like 'recover000001'. I'm afraid that in this case I will be overwhelmed by all the files in my old system (even if DRII supposedly recognizes file types), and I won't be able to sort through all of them to get at my important work.
Does anyone know what is the best way to get my data back???? It will be two years of work down the drain if I can't access the contents of that folder on my old Desktop.
Thanks so much for any advice!

    yes, that's what it means.
I don't understand. Why would it be that TM did not backup my Desktop? The Geniuses were not able to answer this question. I'm completely sure I didn't mark any exceptions when I set it up in February, and I've read other people also had similar problems with some of their folders and/or files (there's another thread where another user lost his Downloads folder; I accidentally replied to it instead of creating this new topic -- my apologies).

you have to use spotlight from TM interface, not directly from finder. start TM, scroll to a backup and use the search field to start a search.
That worked great; thanks. Is there a way to search across different backup dates in one go, or do I have to keep clicking back through time with the same search string?

    I don't understand why
you did that. did you have some problems with your old computer?
I didn't have any problems with the old computer. I was actually giving it to my mother for Mothers Day as her first Mac, and I wanted to make sure she would have as 'brand new' Mac experience as I could provide her.

this is your one and only hope of getting anything back if you did an erase and install. if you did an archive and install then old your old data will be in the "previous systems" folder at the top level of the hard drive.

Thanks. You reckon professional data recovery services would come up with more stuff (especially filenames and folder structures) than I would be able to, if I tried using DR myself? I'm terrified of going through my whole HD and sorting out the hundreds of thousands of files that weren't in the desktop in the first place.
I appreciate your help, V.K.; I still cannot get over the fact that TM can be so unreliable. What could have caused this catastrophe on my computer and in other users? They were lucky that they still had their data when they noticed TM wasn't backing it up, and the solutions were bone-chillingly similar to Windows voodoo tricks (e.g. delete the old TM plist, hard reboot, pray, and see if it works now). If this is the case, I can't see any options other than doing full manual backups periodically, but that defeats the TM purpose in the first place. Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks!

I am trying to open iTunes on my Windows 7 PC and am getting the following message...the itunes library can not be found or created.  The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder.  Any ideas?

Let's try this first. Hold down the Shift key while you try to launch iTunes. You should eventually see the following dialog:
Click "Choose library". Browse to inside the following location (depending on what operating system you're running):
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes library
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows 7

... and open the iTunes library you find in there.

  • Time capsule won't back up - Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Any ideas?

I have tried all the resets, the firmware is the latest version, the green light is on.
But I get this message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
    Any ideas?

Do setup again.. but make sure both your wireless and your ethernet have ipv6 turned on to local link.
Done this OK, but no idea about IPv6 - something new to me and rather Appley I think?
Unplug the WAN for the moment.. Just LAN port TC to the MBPr ethernet via thunderbolt.. (thunderbird was the kids puppet series.. Thunderbirds are go!!). Done - New real people Thunderbirds movie coming out soon I believe!!!
Reset the TC again.. sorry.. !! You're welcome ... done.
Make sure the ethernet now has an IP address.. 10.0.1.2 - Yep - done that - on ethernet anyway ...
You need to open the network preferences to find out. Yep - that's good ...
****** I then reconnect the TC WAN to the router - is this right?
And then I think I start going round in circles ... boot, reboot, restart, reboot again ...
The final result is green light on TC, but error message when trying TM is "Backup disk is not available".
Then open the airport utility and you should be able to setup the TC.
Do as little setup as possible and then run the TM backup and see how it goes.
I have managed to get Thunderbird to LAN on TC to create a folder on TC and copy a file onto it.
So I guess the drive is working - it must be the software, settings or perhaps even the operator that isn't quite so clever ...
I named network RFG, named device RFGTC.  RFG network shown as IP 192.168.0.72
Wireless router is BT Homehub 3 with IP of 192.168.0.254 - is this issuing new IP addresses when rebooting TC?
I have three wireless networks here - the BT Homehub3 wireless, the TC wireless, and also a D-link power socket ethernet thingy for an ethernet connection to the telly - DHP-W310AV which is also wireless link.  All are effectively connected to the BT Homehub - is there a conflict there?
Have several times achieved in Airport Utility schematic with internet shown as green, RFGTC shown as green, light on TC green, but no TM backup run ... "backup disc not available."
And there are no tall building around here to hurl myself off ... at least you can go to Sydney Harbour bridge - not too far away ... it was my son in Sydney that persuaded me to scrap Windows and go Apple ... it's all his fault ...
